I recently bought into Arena of the Planeswalkers because I'd heard it was the very same as Heroscape in all but name. Very happy with it so far. More recently I found my original Heroscape core box set (Rise of the Valkyrie) in its entirety, which I had thought lost years ago. My son and I are going to have some massive battles in the next few days!
What they should do could be terrain bonuses. For example, water can increase 1+atk and def for blue characters. They should add more hex tiles so we can create our own scenarios as we did on heroscape. This game is pretty good but terrain is what makes us create field strategies using our troops.
Yah, when we got Battle for Zendikar, one of the first things we brought in was a load of water tiles; Kiora is a planeswalkers who is buffed while in water, and she was pretty useless given the small amount of water on the original core set terrain boards. I do really wish Hasbro would up the terrain releases, I guarantee that there's a ton of people who have picked up AoTP and have no idea about HS terrain on ebay.
Also they could create STORE terrains. Meaning that if you step on a STORE terrain, that character can buy items for healing, atk and def bonuses and also weapons. Make a rule so the characters have an amount of money to buy items. Characters can carry 5 up to 10 items and maybe 2 weapons. There could be 2 Store terrain, one being the item store and the other being the weapon store. For example Potion being an item and it's effect could be "When use remove 2 damage counters from 1 character unit". A weapon example could be a sword giving a +1atk dice while attacking. Also when you defeat an opponent's character, your character can receive the remaining money from the defeated troop. It's just an idea I have and also can be fun using items, weapons and spending money to have more strategies for the game.
I managed to pick up all of the MGT Arena of the Planeswalker sets for cheap a couple of years ago. While I don't think it is better than classic heroscape it is a nice expansion to it, but you're right it falls flat without more terrain. A lot of the decision making that makes it interesting and exciting comes from choices involving positioning with terrain. Thanks for your videos.
Incredible review as always! It really is a shame that they don't give us more terrain. I really don't want this game to die out and they have to begin to recognize that sadly that could happen with the lack of terrain you are so right! Recently I've purchased heroscape terrain on eBay and you could not have been more spot on: This game is fantastic and really does have the potential to be a truly awesome game when you add in a whole bunch of terrain! I really do love the new units in SOI, standouts for me being the necro and ghoul! But I digress, another fantastic review thank you guys so much for the upload! With this kind of content your channel is going to blow up in no time! I'll be sure to share the review on forum pages and such to get the word out! Keep it up!
Thanks a million dude, we really appreciate it. Yah, it really is a shame about the terrain- this game is being released at a point in time that's different from when Heroscape was released. The tabletop gaming hobby is a fair bit larger now. I wonder how HS would've faired had it been released today (with all the terrain) rather than back in 2004. IMO if the next release for this game isn't some sort of larger terrain pack, then I imagine it'll probably be on its way to being forgotten. And honestly, that sucks.
I consider myself very lucky. Used to work at a toy store, and bought the two big sets, the castle, and tons of packs of Heroscape for half price. Gonna keep them forever. Hard to find cheap pieces nowadays. Oh, I also got the Marvel Heroes set. That's awesome.
I was thinking the exact same thing you said in your final thoughts. Getting the extra terrain seen like a good idea, also this game looks fairly simple and short enough to not scare my gaming mates away when I talk about miniature games. I like to play Infinity but you should see the look on their faces whe we go through the basic rules. At this point I don't see Hasbro giving another expansion but I think this is "enough" if combined with the extra terrain. Keep up the good work, my friend. You're videos are great.
Yah, it's one of the best "intro" to miniatures sort-of games out there. Infinity is a beautiful game but can be a bit intimidating to newer players. Give em a taste with AoTP, maybe they'll catch the fever. And thanks for the kind comments, we appreciate it.
I play ALOT of Arena/Heroscape, using Arena as the base and assigning colors to the older Heroscape units based on their existing lore and how it would fit into Magic if it were a part of it, I honestly adore it and hope to God they keep making content :)
We do too. I expect at least one more expansion coming this holiday season, probably themed around the MTG Kaladesh stuff. And here's hoping it's chock full of terrain.
Halloween decorations at a local craft store (Michael's Crafts). If you dig the graveyard stuff, you gotta watch the next episode in our AoTP series. Don't wanna spoil too much, but let's just say the dead will rise again
If you're looking for more Arena of the Planeswalkers vids, check out the preview of our upcoming series: ua-cam.com/video/r9pYlio_oA4/v-deo.html Thanks for watching, and subscribe to see the newest vids the second they drop!
On the game tiles, the Weirded spaces look like a collection of debris. How about it gives a +1 to Defense from Ranged attacks, and a -1 to Movement when passing through? Or rather, when passing out of, so it doesn't slow you down totally when crossing a big section of it?
Hasbro:" what you want heroscape to be made again? You want to buy terrain separately for arena? Here! Have a disney theme monopoly! Or maybe a spongebob theme? :)"
I need a explantion for the Kessig Rangers ability"HUNT AT DAWN" what it mean that if a Kessig Ranger attacks a non-adjancent figure for the first time each turn the Kessig Rangers can attack an additional time this turn? For example i am the Kessig Rangers and adjancent from me is a red figure and two spaces from me is a black figure i can attack the red figure adjancent from me but also i can attack the black figure also if it is the first time?
I need a better explanation on Sorin's ability "BLADE MASTER" are you saying that on Sorin's attack turn i can attack each figure on an adjacent hex from Sorin. "Example I am Sorin i am activating my ability "BLADE MASTER" so if i have 4 figures in adjacent hexs from me i can attack all for on the same attack turn?
Not yet, they're taking a little more time than anticipated. We are working on them and hope to release them within the next month. Sorry for the wait.
Where can i purchase this part of Arena of the Planes-walker specifically I found the Battle for Zendikar expansion at a comic book store but he looked for Shadows Over Innistrad but could not find it.
The bloodline Nobles ability"ARROGANT STRIKE" when you say figure has less attack then the Bloodline Nobles in attack phase of the turn whatever my oppnent rolls attack die that is added to my roll of attack dice. For example in the attack phase of the turn i roll 3 attack dies and my opponent rolls 4 attack dies the damage will be 7 hits instead of 3 hits?
I recently got planeswalker arena and was planning on getting this version since me and my brothers have been having fun with the original version. The video has made me decide I want this and I am gonna subscribe
Let me get a understand of the Mad Prophet's ability " INSISTENT RAVINGS" The Mad Prophet gets plus 2 attack Die( 2 extra attack Dies) while attacking a Planeswalker or Hero Creature( Heroic Figure) For example I am the Mad Prophet I attack Avacyn so by me attacking Avacyn i get 2 extra attacking dies to roll in battle"?
They seem overly cautious in the way they release this game and it brings a lot of issues, the main one being the lack of terrain as you get into. But also the lack of common squads, that you can have more than one copy of in your army. I think this could be solved within the model they seem have now: 1 big core set box and 1 small expansion box. Now they may change this up and start releasing Booster packs with a single squad of three figures and maybe a terrain tile and that would great. But what I would like to see instead is that they use the small expansion box releases for common squads and terrain, no planeswalkers, unique squads/heroes and preferably no spells. That way we can buy multiple copies of those and get some more terrain in the process. I like the big terrain boards as they can get you into the game quite fast compared to having to build the entire battlefield from the ground up. But it is plain to see even a few more terrain tiles can make this game shine. I have only played with the core set stuff so far and each game all the interesting stuff always happens around those two sad little hills, that are the limit of what you can do with just the core set tiles. I am not even asking for a tub full of tiles like the Heroscape core set, even a doubleing of what is in a core set now would take the game to another level. If I hadn't vowed to curb my boardgame spending this year I would track down at least a handfull of more tiles.
the ability 'WAKE THE DEAD" refers to any figure or squad that "GHOUL VANGARD " destroys is returned to the battlefield as a zombie with 1 Life, 3 Attack Die and 3 Toughness Die and movement of 4 and a range of 1 correct?
For example i am using green planeswalker Tree Elemental now not all 3 Tree Elemental returns back as a zombie that Ghoul Vangard destroys only the one Tree Elemental figure that Ghoul Vangard destroys i can bring that one Tree-Elemental back as a zombie that Ghoul Vangard control with 1(Life) 3(Attack Die) 3(Toughness Die) 4(Movement) 1(Range)?
Ok gotcha for example" if i use the figure Tree Elemental and I battle a Ghoul Vanguard that means that i can return the Tree Elemental figure on the field as a Zombie that Ghoul Vanguard controls with 1(Life) 3(Attack Die) 3(Toughness Die) 4 (Movement) 1(Range)" correct?
If you want a quick way to identify who is a new zombie, take off the sealing ring from a bottle of Gatorade, and slip it over the figure. It's the perfect size. If you prefer another color than orange, you can spraypaint it, or buy a different flavor of juice drink, green, black, red, the rings come in lots of colors.
I think the issue with adding terrain is that the characters lack mobility in this game so adding terrain would break the flying/land balance. In heroscape there were many mobility abilities to counteract that.
Whenever a spell card is played, Necro-Alcheemist get a counter then on the start of his next turn the counter he received can become a attack die correct?
I had a question. Since there are expansions now when 2 people are using a red planeswalker they could only use red spells. who gets to choose the spells. and if one chooses the best spell cards will the other have the worst spell cards. if i buy and extra box of any arena planeswalker sets. now I would have the same spells would I be able to choose the smae spells as the other player being the same type of planeswalker.
As far as we can see, there are no official rules regarding this situation. Our advice (if you have one set) would be to do a card draft before you play- basically, get all the cards together, Player 1 picks a card and passes all other cards to Player 2, who then picks their card, and passes back to Player 1, etc. Repeat until done. If you have two sets, then there are no rules preventing you from building the same deck as your opponent.
TwoBats Gaming well I figured it out according to the rule book the same person can't use the same spells or a unique army squad card but however the opponent could use it so pretty much I could have the same unique army squad and spells than my opponent so there is a point of buying the same set again. just wanted to let you know? I just red the rule book it came with about 100 times to understand it.
I have all the content from AOP so far. If I find somebody who also has a set, we play against each other with the same planeswalker and spells. I read somewhere that you have to mark your figures to distinguish them from similar opposing ones. And also that is why there are limits for the squads, you can set rules for a game based on how many players and what they have in their collections, if someone has only the base set, you set a lower limit so those with more figures would be held back. It is nice the big sets of AOP has everything you need for multiplayer out of the box and gives you the flexibility of army building against other people sho own the game.
Explane Jace ability "SEARCH FOR ANSWERS" you saying i call a sorcery card and my opponent looks at the top of his or her deck and see if it is a sorcery if it is not then the ability do not work but if it does then that sorcery card is sent to the graveyard. For Example" I am Jace I use Jace ability"SEARCH FOR ANSWERS" i say the sorcery card Duress my oppenent looks at the top of his deck and see the sorcery card there it is destroyed but if the sorcery card is not there then the ability does not work correct?
Should be within a week or so, we're currently dealing with a bunch of real world crap (buying a new house) so our time is a little limited. Thanks for asking and watching, we really appreciate it.
Better Explanation on Arlinn Kord's ability "ARCHMAGE'S ASSAULT"? For example" I am Arlinn Kord I destroy my opponent's figure I can deal 1 damage to any figure within a 7 clear sight spaces from Arlinn Kord" or " Arlinn Kord figure in her army is destroyed I can deal 1 damage to any figure within a 7 clear sight spaces from Arlinn Kord" or " If any figure is destroyed on both sides then I can deal 1 damage to any figure within a 7 clear sight spaces from Arlinn Kord"
Out of curiosity, before I blow money on the game, do I need to purchase the other 2 first? Mind you, the only real reason I want it is that I loved the Innistrad expansions in the card game and would love to play as Sorin in a different setting.
Lol, no worries. Thanks for watching! For anyone else who's wondering, Shadows Over Innistrad is a stand-alone expansion for AoTP. You don't need the other AoTP games to play it.
loved the video the visuals are great I'm gonna check out your other stuff. however the only thing i dont agree with is the terrain, while it is cool and can make the game more dynamic its quite annoying to set up big boards. remember this is a board game and most people will open the box and want to play quickly. some of us more hardcore players don't mind more set up and etc. they are trying to have a more open fan base. what i do think they should add is more decoration tiles so walls trees pillars etc would be nice just to lightly dress up the board and work for los. i think what is more important now is cards and minis. magic is about building decks with both creatures and spells thats what we need more of.
That's an interesting thought, and you do make a valid point. One complaint people have had about heroscape is the space/amount of time it takes to set up. For us, the tradeoff is worth it, but that may not be true for everyone.
I need a better descriptive on Jace Ability called "SEARCH FOR ANSWERS" Do you name a sorcery name or say sorcery as a whole. For example i say the sorcery card Chandra's Brand and my opponent has that card on top and continue with the rest of the ability or do i say Sorcery and my opponent has that card on top and then continue with the rest of the ability. explan please.
As I understand it you name a specific sorcery card (ie Chandra's Brand), your opponent reveals the top card of their library, and if you named the correct card, it's removed from play.
Unfortunately Hasbro/WoTc has a patent on the terrain, so making ones that interlock directly with current terrain is probably a legal no-no. That being said, making an alternative hex-based terrain that interlocks would be a great idea, we've seen some kickstarters with related ideas.
Thanks for saying so. We've been in the middle of buying a new house, just got everything wrapped up. We're just about ready to release a bunch of new vids, so hopefully that will help!
TwoBats Gaming wow.. I've watched this vid like, fifty times. That's because it's so helpful to a nerd like me🤓 and I hope I can get this one. Like I said you still deserve WWAAYY more subs. I completely agree with you on the terrain and the setup of it because I'll be playing with a friend and I will try to use it so much.. but there is so little.. It would definitely help me if I could get just a bit more to help balance out the battlefield And, well... make it more fun! Keep up the good work and please do more videos on this plz
Biggest boo boo they made with these releases was making all the units unique. What was that all about? If they put some stock elves. Some stock goblins stock zombies ect people would start buying multiple copies to start making their own unique squads. I hate when games make these silly marketing errors and get ditched. This plus terrain an this game could have been a monster release.
Fantastically produced video with clear and detailed review, well segmented between unbiased information and specific opinions. Thanks!
Our pleasure, thanks for the kind words.

thanks for the support! we'll keep the vids coming, stay tuned.

Any rumors about anymore releases post SoI?
Looking forward to the painting video!
Awesome. Looks like Avacyn is one of the first models Rachel will be painting, we'll be filming it tomorrow or Saturday. We'll keep you posted.

Just bought the three for 5 dollars each at Toys r Us and 3 dollars in the innistrad expansion at Wallmart! 13 US total
Excelent review!! Thanks for sharing.
I think the issue with adding terrain is that the characters lack mobility in this game so adding terrain would break the flying/land balance. In heroscape there were many mobility abilities to counteract that.
Wheres the vids about painting the figures?
+biggdave401 check Rachel's Diy painting vids on our channel, they use the AoTP minis.
Whenever a spell card is played, Necro-Alcheemist get a counter then on the start of his next turn the counter he received can become a attack die correct?
The counter can be removed to give him +2 to attack for one turn (so 2 additional attack dice).
So 1 spell played on my turn or my oppnent turn receives +2 attack die (1 spell card = 2 extra die) added to Necro-Alchemist original attack die roll?
can I use it as an expansion pack for magic the gathering: arena of the planeswalkers?
Absolutely, it mixes great with the core set.

Should be within a week or so, we're currently dealing with a bunch of real world crap (buying a new house) so our time is a little limited. Thanks for asking and watching, we really appreciate it.
Can't wait! You guys have great videos!
still playing heroscape.. ..building maps.. ..and just enjoying my armies.. ..
I just heard of heroscape and I'm about to get a starter set
Where did you get the board game
Amazon, walmart, Ebay, its available many places
Never mind...would help if I waited until the very end to start typing questions
Well, their coming out with Ravnica as a D&D setting. Those who want to play a campaign may as well incorporate these miniatures into thisbgame now.
Heroscape terrain would make a great kickstarter
Unfortunately Hasbro/WoTc has a patent on the terrain, so making ones that interlock directly with current terrain is probably a legal no-no. That being said, making an alternative hex-based terrain that interlocks would be a great idea, we've seen some kickstarters with related ideas.
You deserve WWAAYYY more subs
Thanks for saying so. We've been in the middle of buying a new house, just got everything wrapped up. We're just about ready to release a bunch of new vids, so hopefully that will help!
TwoBats Gaming wow.. I've watched this vid like, fifty times.
That's because it's so helpful to a nerd like me🤓 and I hope I can get this one.
Like I said you still deserve WWAAYY more subs.
I completely agree with you on the terrain and the setup of it because
I'll be playing with a friend and I will try to use it so much.. but there is so little..
It would definitely help me if I could get just a bit more to help balance out the battlefield
And, well... make it more fun!
Keep up the good work and please do more videos on this plz
They should make terrain packs so people who want that can buy terrain and people who don't care don't have to get it
Or something like the Heroscape Booster packs, which had 2-3 new figurines and some terrain in each.
For the Avacynian Inquisitors ability"RIGHTEOUS PURGE" you refering to all non-human figures as gobliems, zombies, and who else is a non-human figure?
"They're like Chaotic evil Jehovah Witnesses." LOL
couldn't agree more. c'mon Hasbro, grow up!!
Yeah once I learned the basic rules me and my friends started changing the rules here and there
the funny thing is the Cultists are red not black in the card game.
Skirsdag cards are usually black if I recall. The "Mad" Prophet is red though.
Girhin The Skirdag Cultists are red. I had looked it up before posting.
gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?name=+[Skirsdag] Ok the actual cultist card is red, but that is 1 out of 4. The rest are black.
So mad I threw my hero scape game out when moving. Aghhhhh
Damn, they really should have kept this game going. WTF why did they stop!!!
For goodness sake, just get a 3d printer.
that generic music is annoying AF
