  • In this video we run through the process of the 2-ply reverse twist, and then using the same method make a length of Bramble cordage. Brambles are easily found throughout the UK and make a very strong cordage that is simple to produce and has a wide variety of uses from shelter building, fishing lines and other primitive projects. Thanks for watching...…...

Hi Mark! Great instruction on how to make natural cordage. I never thought of brambles, but they seem to be great for that purpose. I will give it a try next time. Have a nice weekend brother and take care! André

Hi Andre, I hope you are keeping well brother :) I often stick to nettles for a quick cordage, but brambles are very strong and still simple to produce the cordage. They recon that the best time to harvest them is when they are in flower. I couldn't wait that long lol. Have a great weekend Andrea. Always a pleasure hearing from you, all the best, Mark :)

Very good Mark, as a professional gardener instead of getting angry with brambles which in some cases growing in hedges and 15ft or higher I can smile and make use of them, natural cordage every where in over grown gardens. Cheers and thanks

Thanks Adam :) I know what you mean about brambles. As a professional gardener they must be a right pain for you. I have seen some growing in hedges. I even saw one climbing around a tree, and hanging from the branches what looked like grape vines were blackberries. The cordage is great stuff and could even be used around the garden for tying plants up. Have a great weekend Adam, all the best, Mark :)

Thanks mark. I’m growing a patch of nettles in my garden to use for making cordage later this year. Can also be used ( after some serious processing) to weave with; a bit like hemp.

But that's another craft I would love to try :) I was also looking at flax as well. That looks very interesting for producing cordage. Have a great week Darryl, all the best, Mark :)

Great job Mark, was great to find your film when I got in today as I was making nettle cordage this morning 🙂. I usually go for the nettles as it's a little quicker but I think the Bramble cordage is pretty tough. I've caught a lot of fish on nettle cordage, bloomin good stuff and like you say a lot easier to process than Willow etc. I've had some good results with Willow though. Great day to be out there pottering and practicing skills in the forest and a great tip to practice with other materials. Cheers Mark, have a fantastic weekend and hope you're not grafting too hard 🙂👍. Not long until your bushcraft meet now

Hi Rick, I hope you have had a nice day mate :) Just got in myself..... another one closer to retirement lol. I will doing a bit more with nettles when they are a tad taller. I could do with harvesting some for the autumn, when it is harder to get the materials. Yeah working at the weekend again mate!!! Got another kids day on. So a day of not being listened too, and spending it undoing tangles lol. Yeah next weekend is the bushcraft show. Looking forward to it. I tend to stock up for the year, so its a bit of a blow out for me. I fancy a couple of carving tools and they have loads of vintage tool stalls there, so I will check them out :) Have a great weekend Rick, all the best, Mark :)

Hi Michael, I hope you are keeping well mate :) Always a pleasure to hear from you. I meant to do it last year, but it was too late in the year when I tried it. That's the problem with using natural items form the wild. You have to be there at the right time of the year, or you are either too earl or too late. I like nettles for cordage as they need even less processing :) Enjoy the rest of the weekend Michael, all the best, Mark.

I should think so Michael. It is a nice thing to do and I enjoy it, so I will get a video done after the bushcraft show. I'm just waiting for the nettles to grow a bit taller. Yes, I have slept in it a couple of times so far. I had an early start at work, so I kipped over a couple of nights. It is a great piece of kit :) Perfect for this time of the year. Hopefully it will get more uses over the summer too :) My weekend is taken up with free kids fishing sessions. It sounds as fun as it is lol. 8 hours of undoing tangles and unhooking the odd trout lol. Take care Michael, all the very best, Mark.

Hi Eric... I hope you are keeping well brother :) Yeah, brambles can be a right pain. Even so, I would rather turn then into something good, than just burn them and be glad that I got rid of them. The fruit is OK, but it's not worth all trouble they cause. The cordage is more useful to me than the fruit :) Enjoy the rest of your weekend Eric, all the best, Mark :)
