I just picked up the NATO version as I really wanted the AUG but am stuck in a 10 round state; I prefer the magpul 10/30s for drills so I don’t have to fish around for the tiny 10 round mags. For me; AR mag compatibility was a must as I cannot find blocked Steyr mags (I also do not want to deface a beautiful waffle either)
This firm has been one of my dream guns and it's mostly unobtainable at this point I appreciate the videos keep up the good work and look forward to more of your blackbox videos
During the Pmag drought of a few years ago, a company made an Ar15 mag that had the AUG waffle body below the mag well line. Translucent, as well. Very AUG-like.
Great video. Love Steyr AUGs. Am planning on getting one this 2022. Can you confirm the newest generation of AUGs is 1/7 twist with 1/2x28 threads? Their website still says they are 1/9 twist.
@@misha5670 apparently they stopped doing it when steyr USA took over production? Some allege the FN barrels were flaky but who knows if that is people with later barrels making excuses. Either way mine is the newer hammer forged nitride type and it’s an amazing gun anyway.
@@misha5670 yes around second half of 2019 steyr usa switched from using FN made chromed hammer forged barrels to nitrided hammer forged barrels from blanks imported from steyr Austria and nitrided by steyr usa. There were some negative reports on the early nitrided barrels having poor barrel life (under 4000 rounds groups severely opening up), but that may have been corrected by now.
Great timing again misha, I was just about to buy an AUG last week and considering this very question. Still not sure which way I will go. Is it possible to swap the NATO and AUG stocks?
Years ago picked up MSAR clone thinking that would never see a Steyr in US again, was going to upgrade withe real deal but my NATO version has the reversible ejection and external bolt release and lucky for me no quality issues that plagued msar. So that being said I love the AUG but I can’t give up my extra features on my gun that runs great.
Can someone confirm 1:7" twist versus the 1:9 on the Steyr website? So with NATO version, you 1. lose the ability to lock the bolt back or release it forward and 2. lose the ability to switch to left hand?
Going from chrome lined to nitride barrels is a trend among AR manufacturers as well isn’t it? I’m surprised the AUG’s trigger hasn’t been improved more. It’s not as horrible as many make it out to be but it’s no Geissele either.
@@lordvito3395 Nitro finish might give slightly better accuracy when new, but chrome will give a longer useful service life. I'd take chrome anytime but, yeah not 100% a deal breaker.
I can tell you a 50 round drum will not work in a stanag AUG, it will lock in but every round is a failure to feed, stanag mags work fine. the 50 rd drum works in a FNC with no failures what so ever, on semi or full.
In Germany or at least the German speaking part of Europe, AUG mags are pretty pricey. They're starting at 40 Euros for a PMAG, ranging up to 75 bucks.
If I were to get an AUG, it would be a green A3. I have a bunch of AR mags, so that's a factor. Plus, with 20rd mags, an already compact bullpup becomes even more so.
Each of my friends, to a man, that's fired my AUG either say, "...how much do you want for it?" or "...do you want to trade my (Enter Firearm Name Here) for your AUG?".
I feel the Steyr mags would be the way to go, but for a civilian how will you be using this rifle? Because if shtf or somehow the country was at war, if you need ammo, a buddy can toss you an ar mag or you can probably pick one off a body. You’re not going to have time to scavenge ammo and reload your waffles. For Austrian forces if you’re in a team and everyone has waffles, that’s great! But if you’re thinking this might be used for the apocalypse, nato will be much more useful. Training wise, to my understanding you would run the nato version like a mp5. So I would feel right at home.
Nato stocks use 1 trigger bar instead of 2 like standard stocks. Because of this trigger pull is reported as slightly heavier and less crisp than the standard 2 bar version. Also in Europe there is a version of the Nato stock with a bolt release button. Steyr demoed it with their 300 blackout model
The 16" barrel is too short for a bayonet lug, at least one that allows the foregrip to also fold. While the 20" version can be fitted with a lug, the Austrian military never issued bayonets or even fitted their sTG77s with the lug itself. Steyr only made the attachment for export customers.
I'm still pissed about the whole Lithgow debacle, its a festering wound. Don't get why someone else just does it on their own with all the patents expired and a concept available for implementation.
If i was going to get something like this i think id get a p90, the AUG is iconic but its pretty much a downgrade from a AR where a p90 is at least totally unique and if you can afford the rounds its a lot of rock and roll
I’d go with the standard AUG. Trigger on the NATO version is worse since it has a single trigger bar linkage where the standard has double linkage. Also, standard has LRBHO and bolt release where the NATO version does not. Price of Magpul AUG mags are roughly the same as PMAGs if you don’t want to spend the extra cash on the AUG mags.
Have you used it as a fighting tool? Watching AUG videos over the last number of years, it seems most ex-soldiers from Austria and Australia are pretty fond of it.
@@stuartgorka989 let's not forget our brothers n sisters from Ireland! This dude clearly hasn't got much if any experience with the aug. Only oddity was the progressive trigger which can take some time getting used to

AUG mags, always thought the NATO stock look kind of hokey.
NATO stocks looks the same, you must be legally blind or restarted

In December 2021, Steyr Arms actually shipped a decent number of AUGs. Fingers crossed that they continue.
Very very interesting
After Grand thumb video I'm buying one of these.

Thank you brother this was the last straw for me, deciding on the Austrian version!
Oooo Misha can't wait to see your video on the newly announced WBP Mini Jack pistol in 5.56

1/2x28 yes, as for the twist, just depends which run your barrel is from.
I think I'm partial to the original Austrian in FDE. Might be worth getting both though, one in white for the originality!
Just had some white AUGs come in last week.
As always another fantastic video, love your content, keep up the awesome work!
Thank you
Standard Aug for me. I do wish they could chrome line the barrels in the USA instead of nitriding.
They did from 2012 until what? 2019?

Magpul does offer AUG specific mags. Think they’re based on Gen II Pmags. Have a buncha their mags for my TG36C and have not had problems with them.
Definitely want to pick up a steyr aug eventually. Just need to be patient and prioritize all of my needs and wants like everyone else.
I'd like an aug
Love the aug just wish they make it suppressor friendly

AR mags are widely available but AUG mags are much better IMO.
Being able to share mags among AUGs, ARs and other STANAG rifles/pistols is a major plus of the NATO version.

Most AUG barrels have the 1/9 twist rate. That's the standard. From time to time, Steyr has done special runs of barrels with 1/7 twists though.
When did they switch from chrome lining to nitriding?
I think around the same time they switched from 13mm muzzle threads to 1/2x28?
