The problem is that US channels almost always show the AUG in the A1 Version as used in '77. It's like talking about the AR15 and showing an M16A1. Of course it's outdated and it doesn't have a case deflector for firing left handed, no picatinny optics mount, no bolt release, no attachments for modular grips, lights etc. If you want a 21st century version with all these features (and proper sling position), check out the AUG A3 and particularly the new upgraded one with Corvus Defensio parts as used by the Austrian BMI (ministry of interior).
But the A1 version is still in use for the "Normal" infantry, while only more "Important/Special" groups get the newer version.... So technically the '77 version (STG77 is the Military term) is still the current gun
@@sotiris223 yes I was in the Austrian military and we only had the old a1 version with very beat up triggers. Going accidentally full auto while firing was almost a normal thing
@@sotiris223 Well, basically the people who might get into actual combat get the upgraded versions while the draft soldiers mostly occupied with cleaning the barracks lug around the A1. Same as in the US military, where some rear and reserve units also still even have the M16A2 because they're not expected to use it anyway. It's like saying you shouldn't review the URG-I because most people in the US military won't have it.

I'm from Austria and have been trained 40 years ago in the Austrian army "Bundesheer" on this Sturmgewehr. The Bundesheer wanted to have in the 70ies an automatic rifle in cal. 5,56 Nato, which is reliable, robust, light and handy for combat in the Alpine regions and especially for the "Jagdkampf", which means partizan fighting. Functioning as like the AK47, in very low temperatures and resistant against snow and ice, without cleaning and oil. So plastic was the best material. The StG77 could have much more success, when Steyr would have made a far better marketing. Together with the Pistol GB 80, they have had an excellent combat package for service weapons, at this time. But the Management from Steyr was to weak and additional even blocked by country specific weapon export restrictions. Congratulatons to your channel and best wishes from Austria!
I used the iron sights a lot for that out to 100 to great affect. Allows you to shoot without zoning out into the small obj 1,5x scope. I did in 1999 use with picatiny and 4 power wildcat optic which was nice but bulky. Ours also had a 3 position safety. Old mags that are worn give you feeding problems. Never used the bolt assist. And drill was no issue. Slow rate of fire compared to a M4, but would rather this that M16.
When i initially joined the Bundeswehr in 1999 we used the Older Type G36 with the carry handle Scope and Red Dot Configuration (the scope for the military variant has 3.5x Magnification), even when i got out of basic into active duty, and around 2005~ ish we got issued the G36 with the Rail system, the Standard issue Optics we got for them were pretty meh, i quickly got myself an Eotech 512 with a 3.5x Booster which after some adjusting worked flawlessly. My personal opinion on the G36 and the way it has changed from when i joined in 99 till when i left in 2017 is that its a solid rifle thats capable of most tasks the Modern Soldier would eperience during his service. And as a little Footnote: They are Currently issuing G36's and MP7s in RAL8000 which is Sand Desert Tone, and as a Civilian in Germany you can buy the HK243 which is basically a G36 just in Semi Auto they are made by HK themselfs and you can get one for like 1500€~

When I served in Australian military I used this very layout, except for the integrated sight being replaced with a pic rail and a removable sight. When the rifle runs out of ammo, the bolt locks to the rear. One simply yanked the charging handle and locked it in its recess before checking the ejection window. You got to always check the ejection port, lest your assumption that the rifle ran out of ammo is wrong and you had a mechanical stoppage. That action of locking the charging handle to the rear moves the bolt slightly further back and disengages the tab which is what locks the bolt to the rear in first place. Then mag is swapped, the charging handle is flipped down to release the bolt carrier forward. Keep firing. Sling getting in the way was funny: the rear sling swivel can be inserted from either side to keep the sling from interfering with the shooter. At least on Australian military models those pins are capable of that.
On the case of the G36 melting: The Land court of Koblenz concluded that the G36 performs as intended so the German defence minsitry lost the case. Why the rifle still gets replaced you ask? Corruption.
Unlikely it will be replaced as the trials guns have shown the German requirements are pretty much impossible to achieve by any assault rifle (Since the G36 problems came from troops using the G36 as ad hoc light machine guns).

@@NichtNameee The rifle was supposed to have been chosen already, but none passed the sustained accuracy tests (because it's impossible unless they change the requirements to get an automatic rifle or LMG). You can easily find info on the clusterfuck that is the German MoD attempt to replace the G36 to save face on Google and Forgotten Weapons also got a video on the G36 controversy that covers it a bit.

The funny thing is, the conscripts in the German Army where more intelligent, reliable and hard then the "professional" soldiers of today. The training for conscripts was harder and more intense. Nowadays you can't treat them as hard as you could've treat the conscripts.
Just wanted to add something to the great video: the ability to take out the barrel makes clearing stoppages very easy. (We had stoppages with crappy blanks ages ago) Same goes for cleaning/inspecting the barrel. (And there are few other rifles where the soldier can replace the barrel himself without any tools. The only "tool" necessary would be a coin for zeroing the optics again after a new barrel.) And to the optic: the original 1.5 optics of the Austrian issued ones were/are made by Swarovski. The optics and their housing (of the originals) are quite sturdy. Mine back then got hit by a woodenstick of 4cm diameter in full swing and it neither lost it's zero nor did it get any damage.
I was in the Austrian military back in 2015, the barracks I was stationed in was shot down and I was in a group that had to relocate the weaponry to a different barracks so I got to look at the maintenance reports for all the weapons and since we had enough time (I and my group consisted of 5 conscript and 1 NCO-->google translated "Unteroffizier"). Mainly we were interested in our own issued rifles and what date the were produced but we got to so what replaced and for most rifles it was less than 10 parts sometimes often even less than 5. Keep in mind we got rifles produced from 1979-1981 when memory serves me correct. And make no mistakes the rifles get used by mostly conscripted soldiers, so most people don't really look after them and the get used. I was a truck driver (Supply regiment if that makes sense?) and shot in 6 months around 600 rounds of actual ammunition and over 3000 blanks. I strongly assume combat units are shooting much more then we were so the bullet count for the life time is really amazing if you ask me.
Just recently purchased an AUG. Have 1,100 rounds through it so far and I absolutely love it! Balances very well and shoots like a dream. I have only had one issue and that being a small crack in the stock over the disassembly tab.
How can a crack or any defect on a rifle that cost twice as much as a quality Ar and can't do anything that an Ar cant do be worth a shit.Thats like buying a BMW M5 and thinking you have a great car even though it's in the shop 80 days a year when cars that outperform it and,cost less and are more reliable.
@@realisrealite5554 It can do a few things your quality AR cannot do. It can fit in a small backpack with a 16 inch barrel. 20 inch AUG is the size of a 16 inch AR with stock collapsed. Max velocity from 556. Bullets fly faster, further and hit harder than in the AR. It can fit in an even smaller case if you want to take the barrel out. Barrel changes in about 5 to 10 seconds. You want a 16 inch, 20 inch, even 24 inch RPK like rifle. Done... You can use AUG and AR magazines. Change whole body over in 10 seconds. AR mags are about same price as AUG mags now. It runs very cool and very clean. Only part that really gets dirty is the piston. I personally like clean guns but hate cleaning them. DI and roller delayed is prob the worst for running dirty. 16 inch aug is about pound heavier than 16 inch AR. Add sling and front end grip to AR and weight difference is not that much.
I serve in the austrian army for 4 year now and my rifle (which is the exact same verion like in the video) has gone through a hella torture. Bouncing against rocks while climbing, falling on it (multiple times), 6-7 magazines full auto close to melt my glove, mud, water, dust, snow, freezing rain... No jams or cracks or something. Maybe your rifle was manufactured with other materials?
I love my AUG A3 M1. Put more rounds through it in the year I've owned it than all guns combined I've shot or owned over my lifetime. Got mine setup with a Burris RT-6 in a Manticore Talon mount, Streamlight HL-X, and some upgrades from Corvus and Ratworx and it is just fun as can be. The original AUG mags are also fantastic, vastly prefer them to AR mags.
Thanks for the nice video. I'm from Austria, so i'm a little familiar with the AUG. Our Police just got the new AUG A3 with a new feature: the cross block safety can be placed in the middle, which prevents the trigger from being pulled back to full auto.
That is such a simple solution to an age old problem. It is an interesting observation on how human brains work. It only took 40 years to figure out, but is such a huge advance in the design.
@@wurzel9671 Just thinking about it, that would make sense. Because if one were to just slap the safety in a hurry with out paying attention it would go past FA to semi. Whereas it would take attention to 'stop' at FA. I guess it comes down to priority in a 'panic' situation. EG when one has to bring the weapon to bear as a response to action.
There cool to look at but i would not spend my money on one....they are cool, but imo opinion overrated, and the mostly i THINK people want them because we can not have them, because of import laws. Back in the day they were ahead of their time, but there is much better optiins and guns i personally would want first. But i do understand the nostalgia of them.

Except for the lack of a bolt release (though I think I've read that the a4 version has one) I find it to be a supremely ergonomic rifle, and in almost every regard more comfortable to use than any other gun I've handled so far. There's two things I'd change, the lack of a bolt release and the rather bulky handguard. Otherwise it's a really great gun. Especially the k variant.
When you're at SHOT next year, swing by the Steyr booth and look at the Corvus Defensio accessories. They really improve the handling. The optics rail is extended and has integral QD sling points on either side for the front sling attachment. An adjustable, replacement charging handle. An enlarged, aluminum magazine release. A case deflector that fits inside the ejection port so you can shift it to the left shoulder and not worry about eating brass. A variety of forward rails to replace the VFG so you can easily mount a light. And they may have their improved trigger complete and through testing by then. Their goal is a trigger that feels like a good AR trigger.
since it was my service rifle in the austrian army i mght have to say a few things about this: the sling might be inthe wy of operating this but there is a certain way you can put this so it doesnt interfere with operating the rifle. also the is 3 ways to put the gas stting: full power (usually used for practice rounds, standard setting and no gas (was thought to use for barrel propelled granades). also the correct way to take it down was to remove the barrel first, then take apart the reciever, gas system, pin, etc and at last you take out zhe firing machanism! still great video though, keep up the good work, really enjoy you channel

Well I am From Austria 🇦🇹 and I was in the Military. I of course shot the STG 77 and I just feels right stable on Target. I even Shot one there wehre the Sights where not Calibrated to me. And still shot over 200meters perfectly in the Center after just 2 Shots of getting used to it. It is rly easy to use and just the perfect Rifle in my Opinion.
I’ve never shot a G36, but I do own a Aug A3M1. I put the ratworx trigger sear. It’s hand down the best $100 I’ve spent on a gun. Turns the trigger into a 1911 trigger, others have said the same thing so it’s not an exaggeration. The aug is cool, felt recoil is unique, it’s like shooting a loud 22lr. Barrel removal is sweet. Having a hard time choosing an optic as it’s got the short rail.
I love the barrel removal party trick. I have a ratworx trigger sear as well, but I’ve been hearing that the AUG with RW sear has some reliability issues, I’ve yet to have any issues even with the unmodified trigger chassis. What’s your experience been like?
The quick detachment feature of the barrel is to allow the shooter to remove the barrel to clear a stuck case, instead of performing the silly "mortaring" maneuver, which can break the buttstock and render the whole rifle useless. I am totally amazed that nobody sees that benefit!
Up here in Canada, back in the 90's, when I was still allowed to shoot my AUG A1 ( the laws changed - I got to keep it, but can never take it out of my house ever again), I loved using the "doughnut of death" out to 150 yards on gophers. Could get first shot hits - it is a very accurate rifle - even with the trigger, which I never thought to be a problem. BTW - the doughnut can also be used as rangefinder: at 300 meters a standing man will fit top to bottom inside of the circle. I shoot a Colt Canada SA20 now (civilian version of the Canadian army C7 (M16)) which I also love, but if I had to choose just one, it would be the AUG.
Why can you own essentially a semi auto M16, but not the AUG? I've been trying to find out more first hand experience of foreign gun laws to compare to what we have in the US. I've been trying to read up more on Canadian legislature but I know it can differ drastically in practice. A real shame y'all have lost so much ground, especially this year. Dean Carr Back in 1993 the feds introduced a lot of gun control legislation restricting or prohibiting a large amount of firearms. It appeared to me that at the time, someone without any firearms knowledge went through a copy of Firearms Digest and picked out anything military or evil looking, then regulated against them. Guns with extended mags, pistol grips, etc became prohibited or restricted. Guns familiar to movie goers like AR 15s and AK47s were especially targeted. Firearms that looked “traditional” and “safe” were left alone. For some reason my AUG, along with long barrelled semi auto UZIs and Sterlings got their own classification and became “prohibited with restricted grandfathering”. This meant that they were prohibited but were treated like restricted firearms, which meant that I could keep it and shoot it at the range only. AKs and a lot of others that were now prohibited had to be turned in with no compensation. A big struggle ensued with ARs and they were dropped from the prohib list and reduced to restricted status, so people could still keep and shoot them at the range. A few years after this I received a letter from the RCMP telling me that my AUG was no longer permitted to be shot at a range - I could keep it but couldn’t take it out of the house anymore, and it must be surrendered to the police upon my death. As you can see, the Canadian firearms laws are a huge mess that make no sense, are based mostly on the appearance of a firearm, and have been concocted by people totally ignorant about firearms. This latest round is just another example of ignorant politicians going after the easy target (lawful owners) so that they appear to the uneducated public that they are attempting to address problems with gang violence and arms smuggling. But hey, those problems are hard to solve and would take effort, so let’s just go after the segment of the population that is probably the most law abiding and who wouldn’t vote Liberal anyway.

I loved the double mags but a lot of people hated them. Modifing the magpouches helped. They give you problems with the ammo capacity you can carry though. I also have never seen clips for them to load them faster. We were told there where problems when parachuting with them and i had two broken reddots myself. Shouldertransition was very easily if you set up the sling the right way. When you use the standard sling correctly you can shoot and aim the gun easily. There was even a one armed shooting instructor for this. In my pov the over under reddot/scope optic on the G36 is nice, especially in terrain where the ranges you might engage differ. Also the laser light module on the G36 was quite usefull and i don`t know if something like that exists for the AUG. Also the place and height of the optic was nice to put the rim of your helmet on when in position very long and aiming oberving or whatever. Also the foregrip is/was highly modular (i have seen AG36 40 mm grenadelauncer, bipod and pistolgrip on front of myself). My take on the replaceing. Look at who was the minister of defense at the time of germany at the time of this controvercy, Look at other controvercies the person has been involved (and how the person "got out of them") and into the connections, the political evolution and where the person is now. Very very very interesting as well as the way the german military "changed". My opinion: There is no "best". A lot of factors come together and everything and their use is part of a "system". When one calls something "the best" the view is usually way to narrow.

I think that "best" is just a category that combines favorable assets, optics aside. Whichever has the most assets is the victor. Nothing in this life is ever truly the best. But, when it comes down to the question of which rifle would you rather take with you into combat; I think that there will be a clear winner for each person. All of it being subjective of course. Based off of my personal experience, I've been issued the M249, M16A4, M27, and M4. Which one would I rather carry? The 249. Thats my choice. I'm sure many will disagree on the basis that the 249 is heavier, less reliable, and the load out is heavier, which will limit mobility.
@@patrickjohnson3862 I`m not sure if i have a clear winner. Who pays for the gun? Logistics, climate&physical abuse (e.g. parachuting, rapelling, jungle), the situation and on and on and on. When there is a situation i make do with what i have. I`m speaking as someone from somewhere where we, in general can`t have guns for self defense (there are small exceptions with special licences but they are very hard to get, usually politicans, judges and some security people) and whos country hasn`t been independent since ww2 and the occupation laws have still their effect (there is a lot more to this in general blacked out & unconvinient history).
These videos are awesome. Some of the interesting comparisons you might want to consider are BM59 vs M14, FAL vs G3, Aug vs SA85 vs Famas, Valmet vs AK or Valmet vs Galil, and HK416 vs SCAR.
David Duafala I think the 805 BREN is a better comparison for the SCAR. Compare the Galil to the RK62 or RK95, since he already did the AUG compare the TAR-21 to the L85 (but no contest, pretty sure anything can beat the L85). There are just so many he could do.
Sorry to correct you im a gunsmith in the Austran Army. The Steyr AUG was constructed to be easely converted from righthand to lefthand. But the Austrian Army did not issue the lefthand- bolt, which was also needed to turn it into a working lefhand- rifle. Flipping the extractionportcover from one side to the other and rotating the Bolt 180° alone would not work. Like British recruits, also the Austrians learn to shoot with the righthand side only.
Austrians: ugh I'm so sick of getting mistaken for Australian. Also Austria: hey, wanna license to produce our rifle and call it the Austeyr? That will distinguish it a lot.
Never shot a G36 but I was surprised at how much I fell in love with my AUG after I bought it. It may even be my favorite GP rifle, certainly like it more than my Tavor.
*For the final judgement of the rifle.* The German Defense Ministry did a huge investigation and the German media covered it a lot. Mostly the public funded state TV. Spending millions on third party consultants and investigation. By the end it turned out that government decided to buy and use cheaper ammo than the ammo recommended by H&K which in turn made the barrel and the surrounding polymer overheat more quickly among other things such as pressure issues. This was then quickly brushed under the rug because the defense ministry and media for a long time pushed the narrative that there was something wrong with the rifle and H&K is to blame for the shit that went down with the Rifle in Afghanistan for example. Which was a false statement again pushed by Gov and mainly government and public funded official media (ARD & ZDF which can be compared to British BBC for example). The final verdict i.e. that it was due to the military trying to safe a few pennies on ammo was very briefly reported and then quickly forgotten. H&K then sued the German Government for damages regarding slander impacting business. The G36 is still the standard issue rifle and the HK416 is reserved for special units such as the KSK. FUN FACT : The fuckup that was the German Defense Minister at the time is now the President of the EU Parlament i.e. running the EU :) When she became president of the EU an investigation for corruption (regarding the multimillion consultant contracts mentioned above) has been dropped. Also there was a scandal similar to the Clinton emails with her. That investigation was also silently dropped.
@Phillip Cameron like, of course the accuracy is going to degrade and the plastic melt a bit if you do continuous bursts of sustained fire for hours at a time in a pencil barreled rifle. Any gun including the SAW would suffer under that.

Same here bro. I made it my "modern" futuristic option to pair with my Retro M16A1, then I learned it was scrapped. Now I aim to purchase a Desert Tech MDR SE. Maybe when I receive my fun bucks from the gov'mint. Or maybe not, prices are wacky for ammo and arms in this Wu Tang Flu panic.
I prefer the AUG too. Only drawback is having to fire it left handed with the right hand bolt inside, but there are ways around that, like the Corvus brass deflector.
I unfortunately do not have my G36/T36 currently but I do have my AUG A3 CQC! The gun shoots amazingly soft and its a great rifle all together with the Ratworx sear and the Corvus Defensio parts on it. Meanwhile, my G36 is currently over with 9-Hole as we speak for T&E so I guess everybody can see how it performs for them.

@Matt allen Make a rifle in the UK secures British jobs, plus the Gov wanted to sell Enfield at the time ,and it would of made it an attractive purchase if they were currently building weapons for the military with potential foreign sales.
Go take a look at forgotten weapons video series on the l85. There was allot of politics. The government wanted to sell Enfield, wanted to prove it could create a design with engineers who had no firearms experience, wanted to hush any problems (closed testing and continually changing the definition of failure), and the l85 program had been hyped as a great thing to the public too much for them to back down.
The Irish got the AUG and the Falklands Defence force got it.. The Poms on Long Look exchange with Oz Army back in the day said they loved the F88 over the SA80. On exchange with the Yanks I loved the M16A2 but prefered my F88.
I think this this the first AUG video where I agree 100% ! After being trained on the STG 77 in the Austrian Army, I always wanted one privately . I could not have made a better choice with the US Made, AUG A3 M1 !
Love my AUG. I have one of the original black-stock versions that got caught up in the GHW Bush import ban mess in '89. In addition to the 16" barrel it came with I also got the 20" and 24" HBAR w/bipod barrels. I also had to get the left-hand conversion pieces-parts since I'm in my right mind. I don't shoot as much as I'd like but it's definitely one of my all time favorites.
I'm a G36 guy. I've had the pleasure of firing the G36C (the modern one, with iron sights w/ rail) and it was love at first sight. I WISH I could get ahold of one in the US. The clones are never exact and its just a let down.. the clone featured in the video was a "C" but with a K/V optic
I've got one of the TommyBuilt Tactical T36E's and it is about as close to the original full size G36 as you can get. I popped one of the 1.5 power carry handle optics on it and I'm very happy with the performance and build quality of the rifle.
An interesting comparison I think would be your Sig Rattler vs. CMMG Banshee. 300 blackout vs. 7.62X39 in the SBR form would be interesting. Thanks for the great video MAC!
My buddy just built a psa pistol 7.62x39 in an ar platform. It’s super damn loud, but thus far seems reliable and accurate. That said, I don’t understand “pistols” in rifle calibers. You’re loosing velocity, long range accuracy, and the muzzle blast is insanely loud and violent. .300blk is kinda more understood for me, being sub loads making it extremely quiet. But it’s an Ak short. So now it’s even less velocity, less range, and I imagine wouldn’t smack your intended target like the good ol Ak47. Plus they are stupid expensive per shot compared to 7.62x39.
Phillip Cameron They typically keyhole and preform pretty shitty from my experience with that round in a 10” barrel. This was shooting at about 15-20 yards max at the time and they were keyhole-ing. Surprised the shit out of me. Any further and the round somehow stabilizes and preforms decent. I’d rather have my full sized AR with that round. Again, I have an AR chambered in 7.62x39, a YHM with exceptional parts in it. It does OUTSTANDING. No keyholes at close range and does great out to about 350 meters. I get people getting in and out of vehicles would definitely benefit, but most of us aren’t riding in convoys, or clearing houses lol. If and when the shit hits the fan, it’s going to be an outside battle. No way could one defend their house. Only a matter of time before you were overrun. So point being, 99% of the ppl that own “pistols” just want to look tacticool, and are caught up in the hype. Just my humble opinion. Like everyone, we all have our views. Also that said, (I’m being a hypocrite here lol) I so badly want an AK pistol lol. Mostly cause I love Ak’s and they look badass. Nice conversation we are having here. The G36 is by no means bad, it's just politics that will get it replaced. Female defense minister needed someone to blame for overseas failures, and german politicians simply love to blame the guns, may it be mass shootings or failed military ops. In court H&K completely won the case, they supplied an infantry rifle fit for russian winters and not a desert LMG, they even offered upgraded steel parts for sustained fire capability years before the issue came up. They may hate us civilian customers and charge a big premium for the brand name with every gun, but at least they work...
Exactly. Important info to give as well, that when Germany adopted the G36, HK already had a heavy barrel configuration with the drum mags especialy tought to be the new infantry lmg! Because politicians who had no clue saw the heavy barrel version was more expensive but looked just the same, they opted out to simply by the standard versions because what looks the same works the same acording to their tought process...... Politicians in Germany absolutely hate HK and tried to ruin them to get the focus off their failure to adopt the heavy barrel versions!!!
I did not know that H&K once offered steel parts for the g36. Is there information about the steel parts online? I am really curious about the g36, and I would like to know which parts they replaced with steel.
I was sad when they didn't bring the Australian version to the US. It addressed several shortcomings other bullpups suffer from to various degrees. It was the first bullpup that really appealed enough to me, that I wanted to spend money on to own
In Ireland we have places a button under the trigger to switch the rifle from Simi to full auto makes it easier to control the rate of fire. As for the iron sites we call them emergence battle sites we were told not to try use them beyond 50 meters
AUG A3M1. Super underated gun, my No#1 go to everytime. Shoots softer than my LE6920 and has been more reliable for me. King of the bullpups hands down.
I think the Poles are on the right track with their new rifle development plan. By having a normal rifle layout for their standard infantry weapon but also having a bullpup version of the same gun for use by anybody who operates primarily in vehicles, the Polish armed forces will presumably be able to capitalize on the strengths of both conventional and bullpup form-factors.
The Fact that the Steyr AUG was first produced in 1977 with all that it brought to the table is astounding.. The Steyr Mags are still prob the best rifle mags produced even with the advent of excellent magpul and lancer mags..
Former AUG owner, this is what you do to your AUG whenever we can buy guns again. You need to do these things and buy this specific model. You need the AUG long rail but the one that takes AUG mags, Just buy AUG mags, magpul I believe makes AUG mags too. 1) Rethread the barrel to 1/2 x 28 and put whatever brake you like, any competent gunsmith can do this, especially easy since the barrel can be removed how convenient! 2) replace the factory vertical grip with a 20/20 precision under barrel rail from rat worx, it gets rid of the factory grip entirely, then you can add what ever picatinny grip you like better, plus it looks clean and not stupid. 3) Get the gear head worx low profile charging handle, 1000 times better than factory plastic setup 4) Get the Midwest industries AUG QD takedown pin for your QD sling, attatch a QD socket to your new 2020 precision rail I told you to get in step 2, attatch it forward of your picatinny foregrip for a 2 point sling setup. 5) Get the 20/20 precision sear from rat worx, it replaces your factory sear with a nice anodized aluminum piece. it shortens the reset and crisps up the trigger. probably the best overall mod for AUG. Just go to rat worx website and type in AUG on the search icon. this it the best possible AUG setup, but at the same time you are losing the historical collectible aspect of the rifle. You're trading it in for something much better trust me. Follow this build list for an awesome rifle.
After 12 Years of Service in the german military, i can say that i do not really like the G36....also when i didnt have many technical issues with it...but it just wasnt what i like to shoot with. I havent shot the AUG yet but i am very interested in which gun the german military would choose in the future. Greetings from Germany !
I'm very curious, having lived in the US my whole life, I've wondered what gun laws in various European countries are like. What can you own in Germany? Went there twice as foreign exchange in high school and loved Stuttgart especially (being a big car guy too) but I know that real experience can differ from what legislature says. @@deancarr4507 That's a pretty complicated matter, as WHICH and HOW MANY firearms one can own, depends on the kind of liscence one has. It's different for collectors, hunters, recreational shooters and people who are actually actively doing shooting as a sport. But for people who want to actually use their firearms on the range or for hunting, it's basically impossible to legally own full-auto firearms.
You should register for one of the open range days most Austrian bases have once or twice a year. If you are ex military they're usually happy to let you try whatever the quartermaster has.

Hey MAC think Magpul will ever make FAL Mags?? Your last “Best Infantry Rifle” vid has me interested in getting a battle rifle but $20 a pop for mags vs $4 for g3 mags just seems insane.

Between those two, the AUG, no question. G36 is a handful- way more recoil than a 5.56 should have. It feels really overgassed. The AUG, though, is much more controllable, and has a kickass progressive trigger. But I prefer the Tavor by far over the AUG. And while it’s cliche, now that I have a nice SBR, I prefer the AR-15 over the Tavor.
Just shows everyone has their own favorites or opinions. I own 3 gens of the Aug and to me they look and feel old. My 6 G36's look and shoot much better imo I have em in every config from (and NO braces all C and K's are SBRed). LOL Also a Tavor owner and fan as well. Gen I Tavor that is I have a X95 as well but its not as good as the original again in my opinion.
For me the ability to single hand shoot an Aug is a big advantage over many common rifles especially the Ar-15. In many situations you may not always have your second arm to hold up and stabilize a rifle for you, you may be carrying something, arm/hand injury, prior accidents.
Hey Tim Im not sure if you will see this but Ill tell it to the people who do see it. The ADF is looking at scrapping the F90 and AUG design all together in favour of what might be the Sig MCX Virtus either in .223 or .300blk. And if the current testing and the fact that some regular infantry units are getting suppressors it might be either integrally suppressed or have a detachable suppressor. This is set to happen between 2021-2023 in Tranche 2 of the ADF updating all of its frontline troops equipment with better modern gear, and this time it doesnt appear that they are cheaping out either something like $20bAUD is being spent updating everything over the next 10 years. G36 all the way I just love that rifle and it is well made. HK needs to bring them into the US like the MP5 so we dont have to build clones all the time.
Tommy Built T36's are no different than my G36 parts kit conversions they shoot and feel exactly the same part even interchange etc. No 922r laws, less expensive (by a little as the T36 is NOT a cheap rifle) and readily available replacement parts. I am a huge G36 fan owing 6+ in various configurations. I also own nearly every HK rifle and handgun sold in the US since the 80's so also big HK fan as well.
I am so glad I got my AUG A3 in Mass. No stores seem to stock them, all because they need to remove the flash hider and can't sell it with the 30rnd mag.
The AUG it’s superior to the “E” G36 shown here in target acquisition, optics , and durability . On of the toughest test for assault rifles is the “soldier grounding” while hitting the ground with the stock the rifle must surpass that test to be considered reliable . Even though the G36 pass, the AUG is even tougher . Uruguay 🇺🇾 adopted the AUG ( in all their versions including heavy support W and grenadier ) back in 2006 for their army - and - for the army paratroopers the G36 E/ K and C for special hostage rescue unit . I’ve fired with both and had the same feeling , both are outstanding but the AUG feels better and it’s 1.5x optic for me it’s better . Good vid . Cheers
The infantry manual and basic instruction had to be changed in Spain because the usual way ended with quite a few broken G36 the first months of use. Once you break the stock catch, you may well throw away the rifle and buy a new one. Probably that is why the stock is the part the Germans have tweaked the most.
Folding the stock does allow for firing. It is not a 'storage configuration'. It is a compact firing configuration meant for use in vehicles, or incredibly tight spaces where the stock would just get in the way. It is why the pin goes through the guide rod rear section and why there is a metal retaining pin that mates with the top of the receiver at the rear on that same design to provide a lot of support. The stock actually doesn't do much for structural support - but it does ensure the guide rod rear part mates properly with the receiver by pushing it up slightly. It isn't required. It is also why the stock was made that way - the big hole ensures the ejection port is not blocked and can help deflect shots more sidewards and / or downwards than upwards.
I agree the AUG honestly would be my first pick if I had to go with an AR-15 alternative. As far as G36 family the G36K is the best overall both in looks and length and still having very good velocity with a 12.5" barrel.

I have two AUG’s for a few years and recently purchased a T36 from Tom Bostic. I love the T36 HK G36 clone, but would have to choose my Styer AUG’s. I have never had any issues from either one of them. They haven’t got match triggers in them, but once you get used to them they aren’t that bad. With good ammo I can easily get 2” groups or better at 100 yards. 😊
Here in New Zealand we replaced our Steyr AUGs with the AR-type LMT MARS-L rifle. According to NZ Army, the AUG had issues whilst serving in Afghanistan, lacking range and stopping power.
I shot the g36, AUG and SiG 550. The AUG has great balance, smooth recoil and is quite accurate with os 1.5 x optic. From these 3 i would take the AUG any time. You feel very confident with this weapon after a short while, just like with the MP5.

Having a steyr aug A1, ar 15 (16”) and shot the civil version of the g36 the sl8, I agree with you. Nr 1 for me is the aug together with the ar15 and than if really needed the sl8/g36

Hi Tim, Something a lot of people aren't aware of is that the Bundeswehr almost adopted the Steyr AUG to replace the G3 rifle. A last minute decision the German Gov't decided that a home grown weapon would be more desirable and had HK come up with a suitable replacement as the G11 project was tanked and the rest is history.
I'm more curious as to why HK33 was never adapted as standard assault rifle by German military many decades ago. Imagine German soldiers using G3, HK33, and MP5 - weapons from the same family. Handling characteristics would feel almost identical for all 3 weapons. Simplify things, no?

AUG a3 nice rifle on the heavy side, rail space is very limited, but now a lot of after market products, I put a folding charging handle on my AUG. big improvement . May even get a midwest AUG handguard , M-LOK,
The problem is that US channels almost always show the AUG in the A1 Version as used in '77. It's like talking about the AR15 and showing an M16A1. Of course it's outdated and it doesn't have a case deflector for firing left handed, no picatinny optics mount, no bolt release, no attachments for modular grips, lights etc.
If you want a 21st century version with all these features (and proper sling position), check out the AUG A3 and particularly the new upgraded one with Corvus Defensio parts as used by the Austrian BMI (ministry of interior).
But the A1 version is still in use for the "Normal" infantry, while only more "Important/Special" groups get the newer version....
So technically the '77 version (STG77 is the Military term) is still the current gun

@@sotiris223 Well, basically the people who might get into actual combat get the upgraded versions while the draft soldiers mostly occupied with cleaning the barracks lug around the A1. Same as in the US military, where some rear and reserve units also still even have the M16A2 because they're not expected to use it anyway.

I'm from Austria and have been trained 40 years ago in the Austrian army "Bundesheer" on this Sturmgewehr. The Bundesheer wanted to have in the 70ies an automatic rifle in cal. 5,56 Nato, which is reliable, robust, light and handy for combat in the Alpine regions and especially for the "Jagdkampf", which means partizan fighting. Functioning as like the AK47, in very low temperatures and resistant against snow and ice, without cleaning and oil. So plastic was the best material. The StG77 could have much more success, when Steyr would have made a far better marketing. Together with the Pistol GB 80, they have had an excellent combat package for service weapons, at this time. But the Management from Steyr was to weak and additional even blocked by country specific weapon export restrictions.

The iron sights on the AUG are intendet for very close combat up to 30 meters as I have been told in the Austrian military.
The service regulation states they are to be used whenever aiming through the scope isn´t possible.
and for man size targets they work pretty good even out to 50 m - as i could test myself during my time of service.
I used the iron sights a lot for that out to 100 to great affect. Allows you to shoot without zoning out into the small obj 1,5x scope. I did in 1999 use with picatiny and 4 power wildcat optic which was nice but bulky. Ours also had a 3 position safety. Old mags that are worn give you feeding problems. Never used the bolt assist. And drill was no issue. Slow rate of fire compared to a M4, but would rather this that M16.
When i initially joined the Bundeswehr in 1999 we used the Older Type G36 with the carry handle Scope and Red Dot Configuration (the scope for the military variant has 3.5x Magnification), even when i got out of basic into active duty, and around 2005~ ish we got issued the G36 with the Rail system, the Standard issue Optics we got for them were pretty meh, i quickly got myself an Eotech 512 with a 3.5x Booster which after some adjusting worked flawlessly.
My personal opinion on the G36 and the way it has changed from when i joined in 99 till when i left in 2017 is that its a solid rifle thats capable of most tasks the Modern Soldier would eperience during his service.
And as a little Footnote: They are Currently issuing G36's and MP7s in RAL8000 which is Sand Desert Tone, and as a Civilian in Germany you can buy the HK243 which is basically a G36 just in Semi Auto they are made by HK themselfs and you can get one for like 1500€~

When I served in Australian military I used this very layout, except for the integrated sight being replaced with a pic rail and a removable sight.
When the rifle runs out of ammo, the bolt locks to the rear. One simply yanked the charging handle and locked it in its recess before checking the ejection window. You got to always check the ejection port, lest your assumption that the rifle ran out of ammo is wrong and you had a mechanical stoppage. That action of locking the charging handle to the rear moves the bolt slightly further back and disengages the tab which is what locks the bolt to the rear in first place. Then mag is swapped, the charging handle is flipped down to release the bolt carrier forward. Keep firing.
Sling getting in the way was funny: the rear sling swivel can be inserted from either side to keep the sling from interfering with the shooter. At least on Australian military models those pins are capable of that.
On the case of the G36 melting:
The Land court of Koblenz concluded that the G36 performs as intended so the German defence minsitry lost the case. Why the rifle still gets replaced you ask? Corruption.
Unlikely it will be replaced as the trials guns have shown the German requirements are pretty much impossible to achieve by any assault rifle (Since the G36 problems came from troops using the G36 as ad hoc light machine guns).

2:16 Jusat a note, the regular Austrian soldier will still use the regular A1 variant. A2/A3 are really only used by specialty troops.

The funny thing is, the conscripts in the German Army where more intelligent, reliable and hard then the "professional" soldiers of today. The training for conscripts was harder and more intense. Nowadays you can't treat them as hard as you could've treat the conscripts.

Just wanted to add something to the great video: the ability to take out the barrel makes clearing stoppages very easy. (We had stoppages with crappy blanks ages ago) Same goes for cleaning/inspecting the barrel. (And there are few other rifles where the soldier can replace the barrel himself without any tools. The only "tool" necessary would be a coin for zeroing the optics again after a new barrel.) And to the optic: the original 1.5 optics of the Austrian issued ones were/are made by Swarovski. The optics and their housing (of the originals) are quite sturdy. Mine back then got hit by a woodenstick of 4cm diameter in full swing and it neither lost it's zero nor did it get any damage.
I was in the Austrian military back in 2015, the barracks I was stationed in was shot down and I was in a group that had to relocate the weaponry to a different barracks so I got to look at the maintenance reports for all the weapons and since we had enough time (I and my group consisted of 5 conscript and 1 NCO-->google translated "Unteroffizier"). Mainly we were interested in our own issued rifles and what date the were produced but we got to so what replaced and for most rifles it was less than 10 parts sometimes often even less than 5. Keep in mind we got rifles produced from 1979-1981 when memory serves me correct. And make no mistakes the rifles get used by mostly conscripted soldiers, so most people don't really look after them and the get used. I was a truck driver (Supply regiment if that makes sense?) and shot in 6 months around 600 rounds of actual ammunition and over 3000 blanks. I strongly assume combat units are shooting much more then we were so the bullet count for the life time is really amazing if you ask me.
Just recently purchased an AUG. Have 1,100 rounds through it so far and I absolutely love it! Balances very well and shoots like a dream. I have only had one issue and that being a small crack in the stock over the disassembly tab.
At least can get replacement stock pretty easily and not super expensive.

@@realisrealite5554 It can do a few things your quality AR cannot do. It can fit in a small backpack with a 16 inch barrel. 20 inch AUG is the size of a 16 inch AR with stock collapsed. Max velocity from 556. Bullets fly faster, further and hit harder than in the AR. It can fit in an even smaller case if you want to take the barrel out. Barrel changes in about 5 to 10 seconds. You want a 16 inch, 20 inch, even 24 inch RPK like rifle. Done... You can use AUG and AR magazines. Change whole body over in 10 seconds. AR mags are about same price as AUG mags now. It runs very cool and very clean. Only part that really gets dirty is the piston. I personally like clean guns but hate cleaning them. DI and roller delayed is prob the worst for running dirty. 16 inch aug is about pound heavier than 16 inch AR. Add sling and front end grip to AR and weight difference is not that much.
I serve in the austrian army for 4 year now and my rifle (which is the exact same verion like in the video) has gone through a hella torture.
Bouncing against rocks while climbing, falling on it (multiple times), 6-7 magazines full auto close to melt my glove, mud, water, dust, snow, freezing rain...
No jams or cracks or something.
Maybe your rifle was manufactured with other materials?
I love my AUG A3 M1. Put more rounds through it in the year I've owned it than all guns combined I've shot or owned over my lifetime. Got mine setup with a Burris RT-6 in a Manticore Talon mount, Streamlight HL-X, and some upgrades from Corvus and Ratworx and it is just fun as can be.
The original AUG mags are also fantastic, vastly prefer them to AR mags.
Thanks for the nice video. I'm from Austria, so i'm a little familiar with the AUG. Our Police just got the new AUG A3 with a new feature: the cross block safety can be placed in the middle, which prevents the trigger from being pulled back to full auto.
That is such a simple solution to an age old problem. It is an interesting observation on how human brains work. It only took 40 years to figure out, but is such a huge advance in the design.

Whereas it would take attention to 'stop' at FA. I guess it comes down to priority in a 'panic' situation. EG when one has to bring the weapon to bear as a response to action.

There cool to look at but i would not spend my money on one....they are cool, but imo opinion overrated, and the mostly i THINK people want them because we can not have them, because of import laws. Back in the day they were ahead of their time, but there is much better optiins and guns i personally would want first. But i do understand the nostalgia of them.
I like the AUG better myself but the G36K is the best version of that family IMO. 12.5" barrel is right in that sweet spot.

I used one during my service in the German army, and I really want one because of that.
Except for the lack of a bolt release (though I think I've read that the a4 version has one) I find it to be a supremely ergonomic rifle, and in almost every regard more comfortable to use than any other gun I've handled so far. There's two things I'd change, the lack of a bolt release and the rather bulky handguard.
Otherwise it's a really great gun.
Especially the k variant.
I prefer the look of the SL8 with the low-profile optics rail and thumb hole stock.
When you're at SHOT next year, swing by the Steyr booth and look at the Corvus Defensio accessories. They really improve the handling. The optics rail is extended and has integral QD sling points on either side for the front sling attachment. An adjustable, replacement charging handle. An enlarged, aluminum magazine release. A case deflector that fits inside the ejection port so you can shift it to the left shoulder and not worry about eating brass. A variety of forward rails to replace the VFG so you can easily mount a light. And they may have their improved trigger complete and through testing by then. Their goal is a trigger that feels like a good AR trigger.

since it was my service rifle in the austrian army i mght have to say a few things about this: the sling might be inthe wy of operating this but there is a certain way you can put this so it doesnt interfere with operating the rifle. also the is 3 ways to put the gas stting: full power (usually used for practice rounds, standard setting and no gas (was thought to use for barrel propelled granades). also the correct way to take it down was to remove the barrel first, then take apart the reciever, gas system, pin, etc and at last you take out zhe firing machanism! still great video though, keep up the good work, really enjoy you channel

Well I am From Austria 🇦🇹 and I was in the Military.
I of course shot the STG 77 and I just feels right stable on Target. I even Shot one there wehre the Sights where not Calibrated to me. And still shot over 200meters perfectly in the Center after just 2 Shots of getting used to it. It is rly easy to use and just the perfect Rifle in my Opinion.

I’ve shot both and would be hard pressed to choose. I like both a whole lot.
I’ve never shot a G36, but I do own a Aug A3M1. I put the ratworx trigger sear. It’s hand down the best $100 I’ve spent on a gun. Turns the trigger into a 1911 trigger, others have said the same thing so it’s not an exaggeration. The aug is cool, felt recoil is unique, it’s like shooting a loud 22lr. Barrel removal is sweet. Having a hard time choosing an optic as it’s got the short rail.
I love the barrel removal party trick. I have a ratworx trigger sear as well, but I’ve been hearing that the AUG with RW sear has some reliability issues, I’ve yet to have any issues even with the unmodified trigger chassis. What’s your experience been like?
Tough call - I need both!
The quick detachment feature of the barrel is to allow the shooter to remove the barrel to clear a stuck case, instead of performing the silly "mortaring" maneuver, which can break the buttstock and render the whole rifle useless. I am totally amazed that nobody sees that benefit!
Played with the Australian F88 during the Gulf War. They hold up pretty well.
Up here in Canada, back in the 90's, when I was still allowed to shoot my AUG A1 ( the laws changed - I got to keep it, but can never take it out of my house ever again), I loved using the "doughnut of death" out to 150 yards on gophers.
Could get first shot hits - it is a very accurate rifle - even with the trigger, which I never thought to be a problem.
BTW - the doughnut can also be used as rangefinder: at 300 meters a standing man will fit top to bottom inside of the circle.
I shoot a Colt Canada SA20 now (civilian version of the Canadian army C7 (M16)) which I also love, but if I had to choose just one, it would be the AUG.
Just get a good section of private land and take it out any way
Why can you own essentially a semi auto M16, but not the AUG? I've been trying to find out more first hand experience of foreign gun laws to compare to what we have in the US. I've been trying to read up more on Canadian legislature but I know it can differ drastically in practice. A real shame y'all have lost so much ground, especially this year. Dean Carr Back in 1993 the feds introduced a lot of gun control legislation restricting or prohibiting a large amount of firearms. It appeared to me that at the time, someone without any firearms knowledge went through a copy of Firearms Digest and picked out anything military or evil looking, then regulated against them. Guns with extended mags, pistol grips, etc became prohibited or restricted. Guns familiar to movie goers like AR 15s and AK47s were especially targeted. Firearms that looked “traditional” and “safe” were left alone. For some reason my AUG, along with long barrelled semi auto UZIs and Sterlings got their own classification and became “prohibited with restricted grandfathering”. This meant that they were prohibited but were treated like restricted firearms, which meant that I could keep it and shoot it at the range only. AKs and a lot of others that were now prohibited had to be turned in with no compensation. A big struggle ensued with ARs and they were dropped from the prohib list and reduced to restricted status, so people could still keep and shoot them at the range. A few years after this I received a letter from the RCMP telling me that my AUG was no longer permitted to be shot at a range - I could keep it but couldn’t take it out of the house anymore, and it must be surrendered to the police upon my death. As you can see, the Canadian firearms laws are a huge mess that make no sense, are based mostly on the appearance of a firearm, and have been concocted by people totally ignorant about firearms. This latest round is just another example of ignorant politicians going after the easy target (lawful owners) so that they appear to the uneducated public that they are attempting to address problems with gang violence and arms smuggling. But hey, those problems are hard to solve and would take effort, so let’s just go after the segment of the population that is probably the most law abiding and who
wouldn’t vote Liberal anyway.

I loved the double mags but a lot of people hated them. Modifing the magpouches helped. They give you problems with the ammo capacity you can carry though.
I also have never seen clips for them to load them faster.
We were told there where problems when parachuting with them and i had two broken reddots myself.
Shouldertransition was very easily if you set up the sling the right way.
When you use the standard sling correctly you can shoot and aim the gun easily. There was even a one armed shooting instructor for this.
In my pov the over under reddot/scope optic on the G36 is nice, especially in terrain where the ranges you might engage differ. Also the laser light module on the G36 was quite usefull and i don`t know if something like that exists for the AUG.
Also the place and height of the optic was nice to put the rim of your helmet on when in position very long and aiming oberving or whatever.
Also the foregrip is/was highly modular (i have seen AG36 40 mm grenadelauncer, bipod and pistolgrip on front of myself).
My take on the replaceing. Look at who was the minister of defense at the time of germany at the time of this controvercy, Look at other controvercies the person has been involved (and how the person "got out of them") and into the connections, the political evolution and where the person is now. Very very very interesting as well as the way the german military "changed".
My opinion: There is no "best". A lot of factors come together and everything and their use is part of a "system". When one calls something "the best" the view is usually way to narrow.

I think that "best" is just a category that combines favorable assets, optics aside. Whichever has the most assets is the victor. Nothing in this life is ever truly the best. But, when it comes down to the question of which rifle would you rather take with you into combat; I think that there will be a clear winner for each person. All of it being subjective of course.
Based off of my personal experience, I've been issued the M249, M16A4, M27, and M4. Which one would I rather carry? The 249.
Thats my choice. I'm sure many will disagree on the basis that the 249 is heavier, less reliable, and the load out is heavier, which will limit mobility.

When there is a situation i make do with what i have. I`m speaking as someone from somewhere where we, in general can`t have guns for self defense (there are small exceptions with special licences but they are very hard to get, usually politicans, judges and some security people) and whos country hasn`t been independent since ww2 and the occupation laws have still their effect (there is a lot more to this in general blacked out & unconvinient history).

David Duafala I think the 805 BREN is a better comparison for the SCAR. Compare the Galil to the RK62 or RK95, since he already did the AUG compare the TAR-21 to the L85 (but no contest, pretty sure anything can beat the L85). There are just so many he could do.

Sorry to correct you im a gunsmith in the Austran Army. The Steyr AUG was constructed to be easely converted from righthand to lefthand. But the Austrian Army did not issue the lefthand- bolt, which was also needed to turn it into a working lefhand- rifle. Flipping the extractionportcover from one side to the other and rotating the Bolt 180° alone would not work. Like British recruits, also the Austrians learn to shoot with the righthand side only.

The German Defense Ministry did a huge investigation and the German media covered it a lot. Mostly the public funded state TV.
Spending millions on third party consultants and investigation.
By the end it turned out that government decided to buy and use cheaper ammo than the ammo recommended by H&K which in turn made the barrel and the surrounding polymer overheat more quickly among other things such as pressure issues. This was then quickly brushed under the rug because the defense ministry and media for a long time pushed the narrative that there was something wrong with the rifle and H&K is to blame for the shit that went down with the Rifle in Afghanistan for example. Which was a false statement again pushed by Gov and mainly government and public funded official media (ARD & ZDF which can be compared to British BBC for example).
The final verdict i.e. that it was due to the military trying to safe a few pennies on ammo was very briefly reported and then quickly forgotten.
H&K then sued the German Government for damages regarding slander impacting business.
The G36 is still the standard issue rifle and the HK416 is reserved for special units such as the KSK.
FUN FACT : The fuckup that was the German Defense Minister at the time is now the President of the EU Parlament i.e. running the EU :)
When she became president of the EU an investigation for corruption (regarding the multimillion consultant contracts mentioned above) has been dropped.
Also there was a scandal similar to the Clinton emails with her. That investigation was also silently dropped.

I prefer the AUG too. Only drawback is having to fire it left handed with the right hand bolt inside, but there are ways around that, like the Corvus brass deflector.

I unfortunately do not have my G36/T36 currently but I do have my AUG A3 CQC! The gun shoots amazingly soft and its a great rifle all together with the Ratworx sear and the Corvus Defensio parts on it. Meanwhile, my G36 is currently over with 9-Hole as we speak for T&E so I guess everybody can see how it performs for them.

Go take a look at forgotten weapons video series on the l85. There was allot of politics. The government wanted to sell Enfield, wanted to prove it could create a design with engineers who had no firearms experience, wanted to hush any problems (closed testing and continually changing the definition of failure), and the l85 program had been hyped as a great thing to the public too much for them to back down.

Love my AUG. I have one of the original black-stock versions that got caught up in the GHW Bush import ban mess in '89. In addition to the 16" barrel it came with I also got the 20" and 24" HBAR w/bipod barrels. I also had to get the left-hand conversion pieces-parts since I'm in my right mind. I don't shoot as much as I'd like but it's definitely one of my all time favorites.
I'm a G36 guy. I've had the pleasure of firing the G36C (the modern one, with iron sights w/ rail) and it was love at first sight. I WISH I could get ahold of one in the US. The clones are never exact and its just a let down.. the clone featured in the video was a "C" but with a K/V optic
I've got one of the TommyBuilt Tactical T36E's and it is about as close to the original full size G36 as you can get. I popped one of the 1.5 power carry handle optics on it and I'm very happy with the performance and build quality of the rifle.
An interesting comparison I think would be your Sig Rattler vs. CMMG Banshee.
300 blackout vs. 7.62X39 in the SBR form would be interesting.

My buddy just built a psa pistol 7.62x39 in an ar platform. It’s super damn loud, but thus far seems reliable and accurate.
That said, I don’t understand “pistols” in rifle calibers. You’re loosing velocity, long range accuracy, and the muzzle blast is insanely loud and violent. .300blk is kinda more understood for me, being sub loads making it extremely quiet. But it’s an Ak short. So now it’s even less velocity, less range, and I imagine wouldn’t smack your intended target like the good ol Ak47. Plus they are stupid expensive per shot compared to 7.62x39.

They typically keyhole and preform pretty shitty from my experience with that round in a 10” barrel. This was shooting at about 15-20 yards max at the time and they were keyhole-ing. Surprised the shit out of me. Any further and the round somehow stabilizes and preforms decent. I’d rather have my full sized AR with that round. Again, I have an AR chambered in 7.62x39, a YHM with exceptional parts in it. It does OUTSTANDING. No keyholes at close range and does great out to about 350 meters.
I get people getting in and out of vehicles would definitely benefit, but most of us aren’t riding in convoys, or clearing houses lol. If and when the shit hits the fan, it’s going to be an outside battle. No way could one defend their house. Only a matter of time before you were overrun. So point being, 99% of the ppl that own “pistols” just want to look tacticool, and are caught up in the hype. Just my humble opinion. Like everyone, we all have our views.
Also that said, (I’m being a hypocrite here lol) I so badly want an AK pistol lol. Mostly cause I love Ak’s and they look badass.

The G36 is by no means bad, it's just politics that will get it replaced. Female defense minister needed someone to blame for overseas failures, and german politicians simply love to blame the guns, may it be mass shootings or failed military ops.
In court H&K completely won the case, they supplied an infantry rifle fit for russian winters and not a desert LMG, they even offered upgraded steel parts for sustained fire capability years before the issue came up.
They may hate us civilian customers and charge a big premium for the brand name with every gun, but at least they work...
Exactly. Important info to give as well, that when Germany adopted the G36, HK already had a heavy barrel configuration with the drum mags especialy tought to be the new infantry lmg! Because politicians who had no clue saw the heavy barrel version was more expensive but looked just the same, they opted out to simply by the standard versions because what looks the same works the same acording to their tought process......
Politicians in Germany absolutely hate HK and tried to ruin them to get the focus off their failure to adopt the heavy barrel versions!!!

In Ireland we have places a button under the trigger to switch the rifle from Simi to full auto makes it easier to control the rate of fire. As for the iron sites we call them emergence battle sites we were told not to try use them beyond 50 meters
AUG A3M1. Super underated gun, my No#1 go to everytime. Shoots softer than my LE6920 and has been more reliable for me. King of the bullpups hands down.

I think the Poles are on the right track with their new rifle development plan. By having a normal rifle layout for their standard infantry weapon but also having a bullpup version of the same gun for use by anybody who operates primarily in vehicles, the Polish armed forces will presumably be able to capitalize on the strengths of both conventional and bullpup form-factors.
The Fact that the Steyr AUG was first produced in 1977 with all that it brought to the table is astounding.. The Steyr Mags are still prob the best rifle mags produced even with the advent of excellent magpul and lancer mags..

Former AUG owner, this is what you do to your AUG whenever we can buy guns again. You need to do these things and buy this specific model.
You need the AUG long rail but the one that takes AUG mags, Just buy AUG mags, magpul I believe makes AUG mags too.
1) Rethread the barrel to 1/2 x 28 and put whatever brake you like, any competent gunsmith can do this, especially easy since the barrel can be removed how convenient!
2) replace the factory vertical grip with a 20/20 precision under barrel rail from rat worx, it gets rid of the factory grip entirely, then you can add what ever picatinny grip you like better, plus it looks clean and not stupid.
3) Get the gear head worx low profile charging handle, 1000 times better than factory plastic setup
4) Get the Midwest industries AUG QD takedown pin for your QD sling, attatch a QD socket to your new 2020 precision rail I told you to get in step 2, attatch it forward of your picatinny foregrip for a 2 point sling setup.
5) Get the 20/20 precision sear from rat worx, it replaces your factory sear with a nice anodized aluminum piece. it shortens the reset and crisps up the trigger. probably the best overall mod for AUG. Just go to rat worx website and type in AUG on the search icon.
this it the best possible AUG setup, but at the same time you are losing the historical collectible aspect of the rifle. You're trading it in for something much better trust me. Follow this build list for an awesome rifle.
After 12 Years of Service in the german military, i can say that i do not really like the G36....also when i didnt have many technical issues with it...but it just wasnt what i like to shoot with. I havent shot the AUG yet but i am very interested in which gun the german military would choose in the future. Greetings from Germany !
I'm very curious, having lived in the US my whole life, I've wondered what gun laws in various European countries are like. What can you own in Germany? Went there twice as foreign exchange in high school and loved Stuttgart especially (being a big car guy too) but I know that real experience can differ from what legislature says. So I'd really love to hear hat types of weapons you can own and how the process to get them is like, cheers!
@@deancarr4507 That's a pretty complicated matter, as WHICH and HOW MANY firearms one can own, depends on the kind of liscence one has. It's different for collectors, hunters, recreational shooters and people who are actually actively doing shooting as a sport. But for people who want to actually use their firearms on the range or for hunting, it's basically impossible to legally own full-auto firearms.
You should register for one of the open range days most Austrian bases have once or twice a year. If you are ex military they're usually happy to let you try whatever the quartermaster has.

At my Bundesheer-Time we took the 77 compleet apart and back together with closed eyes in under 1,5 min. not only in the basic grupes. We disassembled alsow this groups.

Between those two, the AUG, no question. G36 is a handful- way more recoil than a 5.56 should have. It feels really overgassed. The AUG, though, is much more controllable, and has a kickass progressive trigger.
But I prefer the Tavor by far over the AUG. And while it’s cliche, now that I have a nice SBR, I prefer the AR-15 over the Tavor.
Just shows everyone has their own favorites or opinions. I own 3 gens of the Aug and to me they look and feel old. My 6 G36's look and shoot much better imo I have em in every config from (and NO braces all C and K's are SBRed). LOL Also a Tavor owner and fan as well. Gen I Tavor that is I have a X95 as well but its not as good as the original again in my opinion.
For me the ability to single hand shoot an Aug is a big advantage over many common rifles especially the Ar-15. In many situations you may not always have your second arm to hold up and stabilize a rifle for you, you may be carrying something, arm/hand injury, prior accidents.
I gonna be biased the AUG because its being used by the Irish defence forces
Hey Tim Im not sure if you will see this but Ill tell it to the people who do see it. The ADF is looking at scrapping the F90 and AUG design all together in favour of what might be the Sig MCX Virtus either in .223 or .300blk. And if the current testing and the fact that some regular infantry units are getting suppressors it might be either integrally suppressed or have a detachable suppressor. This is set to happen between 2021-2023 in Tranche 2 of the ADF updating all of its frontline troops equipment with better modern gear, and this time it doesnt appear that they are cheaping out either something like $20bAUD is being spent updating everything over the next 10 years. G36 all the way I just love that rifle and it is well made. HK needs to bring them into the US like the MP5 so we dont have to build clones all the time.
Tommy Built T36's are no different than my G36 parts kit conversions they shoot and feel exactly the same part even interchange etc. No 922r laws, less expensive (by a little as the T36 is NOT a cheap rifle) and readily available replacement parts. I am a huge G36 fan owing 6+ in various configurations. I also own nearly every HK rifle and handgun sold in the US since the 80's so also big HK fan as well.

I am so glad I got my AUG A3 in Mass. No stores seem to stock them, all because they need to remove the flash hider and can't sell it with the 30rnd mag.
The AUG it’s superior to the “E” G36 shown here in target acquisition, optics , and durability . On of the toughest test for assault rifles is the “soldier grounding” while hitting the ground with the stock the rifle must surpass that test to be considered reliable . Even though the G36 pass, the AUG is even tougher . Uruguay 🇺🇾 adopted the AUG ( in all their versions including heavy support W and grenadier ) back in 2006 for their army - and - for the army paratroopers the G36 E/ K and C for special hostage rescue unit . I’ve fired with both and had the same feeling , both are outstanding but the AUG feels better and it’s 1.5x optic for me it’s better . Good vid . Cheers

The infantry manual and basic instruction had to be changed in Spain because the usual way ended with quite a few broken G36 the first months of use.
Once you break the stock catch, you may well throw away the rifle and buy a new one.
Probably that is why the stock is the part the Germans have tweaked the most.
Folding the stock does allow for firing. It is not a 'storage configuration'. It is a compact firing configuration meant for use in vehicles, or incredibly tight spaces where the stock would just get in the way. It is why the pin goes through the guide rod rear section and why there is a metal retaining pin that mates with the top of the receiver at the rear on that same design to provide a lot of support. The stock actually doesn't do much for structural support - but it does ensure the guide rod rear part mates properly with the receiver by pushing it up slightly. It isn't required.
It is also why the stock was made that way - the big hole ensures the ejection port is not blocked and can help deflect shots more sidewards and / or downwards than upwards.
I agree the AUG honestly would be my first pick if I had to go with an AR-15 alternative. As far as G36 family the G36K is the best overall both in looks and length and still having very good velocity with a 12.5" barrel.
There is even a new short Aug thats like 2 feet in length total. Super light super small.
@@BR4INlessBRI4N its called the "sub-carbine" it has a 350 mm barrel (13.78"). I really like that one too, it looks cool with the flash hider immediately after the reciever.
Be thankful that you dont have to go without an Ar15.

the G36 you have there is the Export Version, not the Version the German Military uses, especially the opitcs are different

I have two AUG’s for a few years and recently purchased a T36 from Tom Bostic. I love the T36 HK G36 clone, but would have to choose my Styer AUG’s. I have never had any issues from either one of them. They haven’t got match triggers in them, but once you get used to them they aren’t that bad. With good ammo I can easily get 2” groups or better at 100 yards. 😊

Here in New Zealand we replaced our Steyr AUGs with the AR-type LMT MARS-L rifle.
According to NZ Army, the AUG had issues whilst serving in Afghanistan, lacking range and stopping power.
Lacking range and stopping power? I thought it has a long enough barrel than most AR-type rifles?

That's probably the lamest excuse they could've used.
I shot the g36, AUG and SiG 550. The AUG has great balance, smooth recoil and is quite accurate with os 1.5 x optic. From these 3 i would take the AUG any time. You feel very confident with this weapon after a short while, just like with the MP5.

Having a steyr aug A1, ar 15 (16”) and shot the civil version of the g36 the sl8, I agree with you. Nr 1 for me is the aug together with the ar15 and than if really needed the sl8/g36

Hi Tim, Something a lot of people aren't aware of is that the Bundeswehr almost adopted the Steyr AUG to replace the G3 rifle. A last minute decision the German Gov't decided that a home grown weapon would be more desirable and had HK come up with a suitable replacement as the G11 project was tanked and the rest is history.
Hadn't heard of that one. Any information on the testing having taken place?
I'm more curious as to why HK33 was never adapted as standard assault rifle by German military many decades ago. Imagine German soldiers using G3, HK33, and MP5 - weapons from the same family. Handling characteristics would feel almost identical for all 3 weapons. Simplify things, no?
I'm surprised that the AUG wasn't adopted by additional NATO countries. It was far ahead of the others.
Political reasons, Austria is no Nato Member.
We tested it on Spain but the ausence of a switch between auto and semi made our military choose g36

AUG a3 nice rifle on the heavy side, rail space is very limited, but now a lot of after market products, I put a folding charging handle on my AUG. big improvement . May even get a midwest AUG handguard , M-LOK,
