    Those graphs reveal some very interesting facts.
    Vanax so much better than all the other marine steels.
    Cruwear has such nice balance of edge and toughness.
    S30v was way ahead of its time.

    The two new Sage 5 options basically cover anyone that needs a general purpose pocket knife design - for someone that needs ultimate edge retention you have Rex 121. For the rest of us that need something which does everything well and is easy to maintain - SPY27.
    I really can’t say enough good things about SPY27. Edge retention almost on par with s30v but it’s a fair bit tougher, slightly more corrosion resistant, and far easier to sharpen. Takes a ridiculous edge and can be maintained with a strop. My second favorite steel for a folding knife after magnacut.

    I can't wait to get my Sage 5 Rex 121. Should hopefully be here tomorrow or the day after. I love the Sage 1 & 5, very comfortable and have nice geometry. I'm hoping Spyderco does some Rex 54 soon, according to Crucible it has better toughness and edge retention compared to Rex 45. Since it has 3% less cobalt and 1% more Vanadium (Rex 45 got 8% Cobalt and Rex 54 got 5%). So I think it would be a fantastic user steel just like Rex 45.

      The REX series of steels don't get enough love. With so many steels on the market they kind of get forgotten which is a shame because they are really good steels. I love REX45 - just personal choice. For me it has a balance of hardness & toughness that I like and I also like the working edges I can get on it. Have a great day.

    Dang man you had me on your new k390 knife til you said no lefty clip. That's why I buy so many Benchmade and Kershaw and Spyderco. They make every single knife for lefties too.
    Got my Rex 121 sage 5 it's freaking awesome. Granted it's a purpose built tool, it won't replace my PM2 salt or manix or 940 or adamas for taking to work. But for breaking down cardboard for my weekly recycling duty (babies at home = tons of cardboard) , the new sage will give my k390 endura a run for it's money. I already used I to break down a heavy box and the thick cardboard corner protectors from a new dryer, and the sage was still shaving after, unlike the endura which was still sharp but no longer shaving. Plus Taiwan makes such a good knife. Mine had perfect centering, perfect action, came sharp and for once, Spyderco got the grinds so even. I usually don't care so much about that but I'm very grateful not to have to reprofile rex 121

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  4 місяці тому +3

      Yeah sorry about lefty option, the texture is not under the clip which would look weird on the other side, however if I do another batch with lefty options I will just leave the pattern on the show side. It's my first folding knife design I'm definitely going to have lefty options on other designs

      @@NeevesKniveshey Jared just got my sage 5 and am curious how’s the corrosion resistance on Rex 121? Got my Sage 5 121 lightweight, and it's great, but I'd be lying if I said it wouldn't be great if they'd thin the blade stock and made it thinner behind the edge. Apart from the Chaparral and one or two other options, Spyderco makes dozens of knives that feature beefy, indestructible blades which, for me, disappoint as slicers. I love my Spidey Chef (and "100 Pacer") -- two exceptions to the rule -- but I wish Spyderco would develop a fresh line of EDC knives more for the office and less for the warehouse and/or field.

      I have 2 x REX 121 blades (non production mules). I can only comment on my own experience - and I'm not a sharpening guru like Jared. Maintaining a REX121 edge isn't too hard, however, re-profiling or re-sharpening from dull I found rather time consuming and getting a clean edge rather hard (certainly not impossible - just harder than what I'm used to). The issue with REX121 is the size, hardness and distribution of the carbides. Compared to many other powdered steels (eg. it nearest rival Maxamet) the carbides are rather large and aren't as evenly distributed. This is why Jared as absolutely correct in stating that getting a really good clean edge on REX121 can be difficult but whatever edge you do get will last forever (nearly). Me personally, I found I could get down to 17 deg per side with a moderately toothy edge that I was happy with. I just couldn't get a 15 deg edge on it that I really liked. It wasn't chippy as such, I just found the toothiness was interfering with getting a clean edge - I hope that makes sense. I expect that this was due to the carbides along the edge. I probably could have moved to 15 deg if I had better gear - I'm sure Jared will let us know!! As far as grits go depends what sort of edge you want and how much time you've got. I found good sharpening performance up to and including 600 grit - just allow a bit more time because stock removal is slower (as you would expect) than most other steels. Moving up I found 1000 grit was ok to help reduce some of the toothiness but wasn't enough to get anywhere close to a polished edge. I tried 1200 grit but it didn't seem to do a lot and stopped there. In short, 600 will get you a good working edge and 1000 will just tidy it up if you want something less toothy. Hope this helps.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jim Skelton's Caladan (OEM by Tuya) design was partially influenced or inspired by Peter Carey's designs like the Nitro, or any of his other customs.

      The blanks would be sized and shaped pre-heat treat using tungsten carbide or similar. Although there are no commercially available knife steels harder than REX121, there are quite a few strictly tool/machine steels that are. The real bugger would be grinding/sanding in the bevels - even though it's a folding knife, that's still quite a bit of steel that needs to be removed. Have a great day.

      @NeevesKnives  2 місяці тому +1

      K390 is amazing with finer grits and low edge angles, Cruwear, Rex45, zdp189, 4v 3v all take insane fine grit edges and don't lose bite

    • @Wolf_K
      @Wolf_K Місяць тому

      “Super steel” is a marketing term and doesn’t actually exist…just like “surgical steel”. Contrary to what is accepted, ultra high carbide steels aren’t ideal for cutlery.
      Try a simple carbon/tool steel at 65-67hrc with a thin behind the edge thickness, then you’ll see performance.
      Edit: these high carbide steels aren’t fine grained. The carbides, and carbide clusters specifically, can be wider than the apex itself. For high sharpness you need fine grained steels like O1. They retain that sharp bite for a lot longer than any high carbide steel.
      Rex121 is 32% carbide, Maxamet is 22%. Great for experimenting with but far from ideal in the real world.

      @NeevesKnives  Місяць тому
