When SNES drunk says: "have a great rest of your day." I really believe it. Thank you for making such great content so consistently, it's like going home for me. Your voice becomes my own voice and I remember my youth playing these games. Even though I was more of a Sega fan only dabbling in the SNES arts, I find SNES drunk's honest analysis of the games and specific opinions and preferences to be very unique but relatable, and definitely plan to buy one of those sweet t-shirts. Thanks again
This entire list (along with many other games) is my Super NES childhood, and the games I couldn't beat at the time were Ys 3, Ogre Battle and Shadowrun. I eventually ended up cheating to beat Ys 3 because the game was too brutal and I got too frustrated with dying for such minor mistakes. I never owned a copy of Shadowrun (for either system), which was something I regretted as I spent too much money renting it and trying to get through it. I also didn't ever own Ogre Battle (a HUGE regret), but I had an older friend who loaned me her copy for a good long time. Unfortunately, I was (still kinda am) a perfectionist and didn't like losing Alignment and Reputation, but I also preferred to grind levels (which adversely affects those two things if you're too strong), so I couldn't figure out how to finish the game. I have infinitely more patience now, but less time, so one of these days I'll spend a week just playing Ogre Battle. As an obsessive kid, I remember playing Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts for like a month straight to learn and memorize everything, then I eventually beat it both times in succession. Haven't been able to do it again since, though since I've forgotten so much of the later levels. Ah, to be young and without adulthood responsibility again...
Man I'm glad I'm not the only one. There were a ton of games we rented as a kid because that's all that was there and I was just lost! I've since played these as an adult and learned better but thanks for the rehash!
These games all deserve a modern-day remake, but _especially_ (Super) Ghouls n' Goblins. Fill that frustratingly awesome niche that Dark/Demon Souls left behind.
Finally some Ogre Battle love! Yep, hard as balls but so damn good. If you end up loving Ogre Battle, you'd need to check out Ogre Battle 64! It's awesomesauce!
still replay ogre battle easily one of my favorite finds. truly incredible and I loved learning different strategies, finding new allies, being good or bad, etc.
The version on ps1 is a more cleaned up version of it. I think it’s called March of the black queen. Explains things a bit better and there are better tool tips for the tarot cards and items
As a kid, I would go to Texas for the summer to see my mother and I would rent the fuck out of Ghouls n ghost due to how hard it was. That summer I invested much time in GnG, Magic Sword and Super Mario RPG.
Breath of Fire 2 was my favorite of the series, mostly because of its beautiful storyline. Trouble was, I got stuck just after getting Sir Frogadocius, and didn't realize the next step was that spot inside the castle... 😂😂😂 Gave up for a bit, then I found the guide for the game and I was hooked.
What really help me when I was a kid was having a big brother that would teach me how to play the game. I would watch and learn and improved upon his playing, then he'd do the same. I remember renting Super Ghouls and Ghosts a few times and finally beating it only to realize you needed to replay the whole game again... Earthbound was my first JRPG and I feel in love, I think it coming with the players guide was what made me rent it and what helped me enjoy it.
The RPGs always being out. I remember how excited I was when I finally got a chance to rent Final Fantasy III. I also remember how disappointed I was when I got a hold of Ogre Battle with no manual.
St. Louis Park native here. I had Mr. Movies, West Coast Video and Blockbuster all within walking distance from my house. My first rental was Super Adventure Island.
1.) Ogre Battle truly is one of the most underrated games ever. It's VERY time-consuming, but with around twenty different endings, a massive soundtrack, amazing pixel-art, 82 different units, tons of secrets and thirty huge battle-maps, it's totally worth it. 2.) Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a piece of art waiting to be discovered by anyone with enough grit to master it. A true gem. 3.) Shadowrun is just really different and very much late 80s/early 90s futuristic. It's a prime example of an inspired and inspiring game because it took such a unique route. It's a good idea to give it a try With all that said, I have faith in the other games on your list, even though I never played them.
I remember beating Super Ghouls and Ghosts, but I took quite some time to know what do every little step of the way. Not much room for error really. I remember really liking Ogre Battle. Don’t remember if I rented or owned it, but I did enjoy it.
U.N. Squadron was one of my favorite games growing up. I’d borrow it from my friend all the time. One of the happiest nerd moments was when I finally tracked down a used cartilage.
I remember getting stuck at one point in Shadowrun and getting so frustrated. Super Ghouls & Ghosts was super frustrating, but also compelling. You're right though, the learning curve was just too steep for a weekend rental.
I love Super Ghouls N' Ghost. What a great game. Cant remember what happened to it. Wish i still had it. I was really good at UN squadron too. Didnt have that many games so had to play this 2 games over & over so got really good at them. Nice video man, great reviews.
Good thing that makes grinding in Breath of Fire 1 and 2 a lot easier is that when you die you lose half your money but keep all your experience (like Dragon Quest). So if you get beaten by a boss just try again and you could well be strong enough by the time you get to it again
I mean I love Tom Waits but Leonard Cohen was doing the same thing 20 years earlier and Nick Cave has been doing similar things for just about as long. I think its mostly blues with some rock and experimental themes thrown in for good measure.
"Like, how do you describe Tom Waits' music to somebody?" The cookie monster meets Captain Beefheart (at least if you're describing his music after 1982) I'm a huge Tom Waits fan so I don't mean this in a disparaging way ;)
That's an interesting analysis of super ghouls n ghosts. Every jump, enemy, and power up has to be taken into account in order to progress. The game demon souls comes to mind because each enemy encounter has to be taken cautiously even though you know exactly where they are each playthrough.
Nice video! If you're still looking for shoot 'em ups on the SNES, I'd recommend giving R-Type III a try: I think it might be the best shoot 'em up on the SNES (along with Super Aleste).
Couldn't help but notice that Space Ace wasn't found on this list. Good, that game was the ONLY SNES game I've ever considered terrible by every measurable standard. Super Gn'G was the second SNES game I personally owned. Friend of my dad's sold it to him with Super Mario World for $5. He warned him to tell me how difficult the game was. I loved it because of that, and it's totally a game of memorization. That reset to the beginning with that crap bracelet weapon though...most rewarding ending to a SNES game ever because of it. Oh, and since you mentioned shooters, check out Blazeon. Holds a special place in my heart. Only game my mom ever bought me by doing her own research. Told me that she talked to the guy at Video Game Exchange (Remember them?) about the games I liked, and determined that I would enjoy that one. As someone who always deduces what gifts I'm given, this one caught me totally by surprise. Brings a smile to my face every time I play it because of that. Technically, there are better shooters on the SNES, but they all make me think of this one. It's tough, it's calculating, it's a blast.
my favorite shoot em up we never got, its called parodius i think europe and japan got it but not us, its a play on words as its basically a more comic version of gradius made by the same people, but its a very cool shooter
i really like your Gaming Approach and can contribute some other gems that most of you dont even know about: Robotrek E.V.O. Search for Eden The Brawl Genre in General: Ninja Warriors Pirates of Dark Water Captain Commando Knights of the Round
I think i played them all as a kid. Shadowrun was not my style as I preferred conventional Japanese graphics. I played it as I had nothing else left at the time but I was glad I did as I got sucked in and it is one of the top SNES RPGS. Ogre Battle I loved from the get go and played that over so many times. Recently got a repro of Let us cling together. Even got Ogre Battle 64 even though I have never touched an N64. Ghouls and Ghosts I played on the arcade so while the game was hard I felt I was already ahead since death didn't require more money. Breath of Fire I & II I quite liked. Can't recall too much about them though. Y's franchise - no matter how bored I got and how many times I loaded that up I never got into it. And I got pretty damn far in Paladin's Quest as well as 7th Saga if not completing them. Those weren't that enjoyable and were lower tier RPGs in my book.
Watching ys 3 gameplay brought me back to that same scenario renting it and not getting anywhere in the game. Same as ogre battle ;I had to watch a friend's dad play it to figure it out
Shadowrun and Ogre Battle are the reason why we got games like Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. Something in between would've been nice, not too easy but also not too complicated. Also absolutely loved Ghouls'n'Ghosts, it was and still is one of my favorite SNES games that is not an rpg like Donkey Kong Country, Castlevania IV and the likes. Pretty much everything by devs like Rare or Taito.
I remember Ys 3, that game was way to easy to break with a turbo controller. In the first dungeon close to the entrance you can position yourself in a way that a bee monster will endlessly spawn (a lot of monsters did this). I would leave the game on for a day & I'd have a max level character that nothing could stand a chance against.
I rented Super Ghouls and Ghosts as a kid. I remember that, despite putting it down to Easy difficulty, I still managed to get right to the end... only to beat Astaroth and get the "start over and play through the game again, only this time with the Princess' bracelet weapon" message. I assumed this actually meant "You can't face the real final boss on Easy difficulty, go up to Normal" and since my rental period was almost over I just threw in the towel and considered it beaten. I couldn't have imagined they ACTUALLY wanted you to beat the game twice in 1 sitting _regardless_ of your difficulty. Ogre Battle, though, I tried again recently... and couldn't stand it. I made a bit of progress, but ultimately got really pissed off and rage quite once it became apparent that the game didn't actually follow its own rules, while the enemy cheated shamelessly. The instructions you issued to your party in battle (target strongest, target weakest etc) did NOTHING WHATSOEVER as your party would ALWAYS attack randomly (usually aiming for maximum inefficiency and pointless dispersal of damage) while the enemy would all just target your party leader, beat him down, and defeat the entire party. Once it became obvious how unfair this was, I just quit without remorse. Don't tell me I "don't understand the game", I can understand PERFECTLY when a game is just saying "fuck you, you lose".
I'm the same with R-Type 1 and 2. The only reason I managed to get anywhere was because the PS1 version had the option to respawn you straight after death rather than the checkpoint of the original arcade game.
I always rented video games from my local Coborn's another MN-based store, it also had the bonus of being a grocery store, so I never needed to bug my mom too often to go there and she'd end up picking out a movie too. And I've never heard of Mr. Movies or Video Update despite Blockbuster and Hollywood Video being present in the area or that could've been a reason why and maybe because I wasn't around for the early days of the Super Nintendo. I remember being absolutely devastated when they stopped renting out N64 games. Also I would've never guessed you were from Minnesota, I can never hear other American accents besides stereotypical Southern and whatnot.
Super Ghouls n Ghosts is one of the hardest games I've ever beaten! (TMNT on NES being another) As you aaid, pnce you understand how to play it, its awesome! 😎👍
Ghouls and Ghost/Ghosts and Goblins has had a few comebacks and spin-offs, like Maximo: From Ghosts to Glory for the PS2 and Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins for the PSP. Sr. Arthur has also appeared as a playable character in the Marvel VS Capcom series. He's in the Marvel VS Capcom Infinite, where you can clearly see in one of the trailers that he gets beat up by Ultron.
I remember grinding in the fire pit in Ys III by the healing herbs as a child. I could kill a boss in 4-5 hits. I don't have that kind of stamina anymore lol
Also another great shmup was Super Earth Defense Force. Great soundtrack and backgrounds, but has some terrible slowdown sometimes. I think it is a port of an arcade game.
"low g man", "another world" and "flashback" for example were all games where i, as a kid back then, was like: "wtf is going on?!" ohohoh and "trip world" for the game boy
So far, when I play Axelay (on emulator with a usb controller designed to look like a SNES controller), I've reached stage 3. After practicing a lot of times with the game. Someday I'll get the original cartridge for the Super Famicom. And as for Breath of Fire 1 & 2, I just got the virtual console version on my 3ds.
We had the same frustrated childhood apparently. lmao but seriously Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts was hard anyway. YS is a good series. I need to play it at some point. Breath of Fire 2 is one of my favorite games and I actually love grinding in this game. xD I actually like lingering around outside the first village just to get rid of all the monsters you encounter in that area lmao I love Shadowrun. I almost beat this game or in the least, I got halfway through it before either quitting or just moving onto another game. Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen is a beautiful game and it's amazing. I love it. Ogre Battle is my favorite strategy/tactics/RPG games
I played though this game all the way to the end and could never beat the last boss. I always struggled with the 360 blue laser beams on normal difficulty because they would ALWAYS hit me when i jumped on the rotating platforms but i found a crazy trick on how to get past them by increasing the difficulty settings to maximum because the laser beams speed were tied to difficulty settings. The lower difficulty slowed beam speed but higher difficulty increased beam speed so i was able to hurt and kill him much easier. It's still funny after ALL of these years later that increasing the difficulty made the last boss easier to beat. That almost never happens in games :)
A few years ago I gave super ghouls n ghosts a second chance. Had to play it for hours each day all week to do really good. Also had to know when to put it down and take a break from frustration. After about 5-6 days of playing, I finally made it through once, hats off to those who do that twice for the real ending ‼️
Ys III...had this on the Genesis, and felt exactly the same way. It was too hard, and I thought I was doing something wrong. I'd never played an RPG before, so I didn't know much about leveling, hell, I barely knew about equipment! Played it much later as a teen, and ended up really liking it. Except, I couldn't beat the final boss, so that was a bummer.
Breath of Fire 2 has grinding issues, but I still like the game itself mainly because of the nostalgia. Going to giant monster isle is a good grind spot.
Ive been playing shmups 4 along time love classics like ikaruga the MUSHA series etc but i understand if people find them frustrating i reccomend starting with axelay then parodius/gradius series its the best intro on the snes imho

I was thinking the same thing. The dude is great!

Yes to Earthbound!! I wrote it off for years and I was definitely missing out. So much love went into every aspect of Earthbound.
loved how you left squadron music until the end, superb

Fucking yes! Shadowrun and Ogre Battle!!!
I was addicted to bof2 the moment i started playing it x)
Ogre Battle was one of the biggest surprise hits for me when I rented it as a kid.
Dumped so much money into renting it over and over again.
Mr. Movies!!! Haha, gosh that hit the old childhood nostalgia gland hard.
The RPGs always being out. I remember how excited I was when I finally got a chance to rent Final Fantasy III. I also remember how disappointed I was when I got a hold of Ogre Battle with no manual.
I'm with you on Super Ghouls and Ghosts. Didn't even want to play it as a kid. Now I play it for fun, great game!!
Super Ghouls and Ghosts was a nightmare until I got used to it!
I loved Super Ghouls & Ghosts from the first minute I played back then and still do.
shadow run rental 3 times. beat it the last time. sooooo good. bought it a few years ago to relive the story.
I’m from Michigan, but we also had Video Update where I grew up!! It’s a hardware store now, I still get sad when i drive by it.
Word to Minnesota gaming!
I'm also Minnesotan. I went to Mr. Movies many times as a kid.
Same here, I didn't care when Blockbuster went out of business, but Mr. Movies going under broke my heart.
MN nerds represent!
Video Update is the greatest video store of all time :)

Ditto! 👊🏼
1.) Ogre Battle truly is one of the most underrated games ever. It's VERY time-consuming, but with around twenty different endings, a massive soundtrack, amazing pixel-art, 82 different units, tons of secrets and thirty huge battle-maps, it's totally worth it.

With all that said, I have faith in the other games on your list, even though I never played them.
Not to mention it's loaded with choices that have an impact on the story. Not very common in Japanese RPGS.
I loved the main theme for " AREA 88 " a.k.a " U.N. SQUADRON " .
Love your videos, man. very honest and to the point. Subbed!

Your description of Super Ghouls and Ghosts being like a puzzle platformer is exactly how I'd describe my love for Ninja Gaiden.
Ninja Gaiden really doesn't have enough of it with only 1.5 hard levels and the rest just watch for enemy spawning where you jump down.
Love the Tom Waits name drop and agree it'd be hard to put him in a genre. And cool to learn you're in a neighbor state! Great vid!
Dude, you're from MN?! Me too! Great videos! Subscribed!
Most underrated retro gaming reviewer on you tube for sure!
I downloaded Earthbound day one it became available on the New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Store, what a wonderful game.
Good thing that makes grinding in Breath of Fire 1 and 2 a lot easier is that when you die you lose half your money but keep all your experience (like Dragon Quest). So if you get beaten by a boss just try again and you could well be strong enough by the time you get to it again
Tom Waits is his own genre. A genre punctuated by awesomeness.
I mean I love Tom Waits but Leonard Cohen was doing the same thing 20 years earlier and Nick Cave has been doing similar things for just about as long. I think its mostly blues with some rock and experimental themes thrown in for good measure.
FUCKING GRADIUS III! I still play that game to this day, and I have never been able to beat the game. It's one of the hardest games ever.
"Like, how do you describe Tom Waits' music to somebody?"
The cookie monster meets Captain Beefheart (at least if you're describing his music after 1982)
I'm a huge Tom Waits fan so I don't mean this in a disparaging way ;)
Breath of Fire is one of my very favorite games..
The story, sptite animations, music😍😍
All your list i have seen so far make me wanna try these games out. Thanks man. 8]
you just described my entire gaming, childhood. thank you snesdrunk :)
That's an interesting analysis of super ghouls n ghosts. Every jump, enemy, and power up has to be taken into account in order to progress. The game demon souls comes to mind because each enemy encounter has to be taken cautiously even though you know exactly where they are each playthrough.
I love your videos man!!! Watch at least 5 of them a day
I remember when I was a kid renting Mario RPG, having never played an RPG before, and loading up the furthest save file and being completely lost.
Nice video! If you're still looking for shoot 'em ups on the SNES, I'd recommend giving R-Type III a try: I think it might be the best shoot 'em up on the SNES (along with Super Aleste).
I already loved your channel, and then you mentioned Tom Waits in a perfect way. Well done, brother. 👍👍

I'm actually a huge fan of level grinding. I love lowering the t.v. volume and putting on an album and listening to the point of memorization

I'm the same with R-Type 1 and 2. The only reason I managed to get anywhere was because the PS1 version had the option to respawn you straight after death rather than the checkpoint of the original arcade game.
That UN Squadron theme at the end got the like lol
OgreBattle really benighted from the instruction book and other stuff in box.
Brandish. Odd perspective, brutal gameplay. Not rental-friendly, but with the recent renaissance in roguelikes I think it would appeal to some.
Earthbound ==♥️♥️
It is a masterpiece.
Comparing Tom Waits to EarthBound is one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard.
Amen; hard games but great games. Minnesota represent!
Love Earthbound. You should give Ball Bullet Gun a shot. Turn based bb gun battle. It's a lot of fun. I've been playing that the last few days.
Tom Waits is the man! I feel that metaphor like crazy. How DO you explain Tom Waits music to someone?
I love Breath of Fire. Great video man
Ogre battle on 64 was so awesome too!
Always glad to get a Tom Waits reference, but in a SNES review. That is, surprising.
(TMNT on NES being another)
As you aaid, pnce you understand how to play it, its awesome!
"low g man", "another world" and "flashback" for example were all games where i, as a kid back then, was like: "wtf is going on?!"
ohohoh and "trip world" for the game boy
I had Video Update in AZ. I would always rent snes games from them back in the 90's when I was a Kid.
I subbed as soon as you mentioned Video Update!! I am also from the land of 10,000 lakes lol!
Raised on Breath of Fire 1 & 2 and Final Fantasy 4 & 6. Not to mention several others. I always return to them every year.
We had the same frustrated childhood apparently. lmao but seriously Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts was hard anyway.
YS is a good series. I need to play it at some point.
Breath of Fire 2 is one of my favorite games and I actually love grinding in this game. xD I actually like lingering around outside the first village just to get rid of all the monsters you encounter in that area lmao
I love Shadowrun. I almost beat this game or in the least, I got halfway through it before either quitting or just moving onto another game.
Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen is a beautiful game and it's amazing. I love it. Ogre Battle is my favorite strategy/tactics/RPG games
oh god...ogre battle is AWESOME! i need to play that again....
Mr.Movies was lit. I remember going there for movies like 7 years ago.
Man shadow run would have made such a sick movie or book
Axelay is the only shootem up I finished as a kid. I tried playing again last week (some 20+ years later) and couldn't beat the first boss.
Good video, I like your thinking.
This was a great idea for a video
with the shoot em ups, I used my Game Genie, still fun
A few years ago I gave super ghouls n ghosts a second chance. Had to play it for hours each day all week to do really good. Also had to know when to put it down and take a break from frustration. After about 5-6 days of playing, I finally made it through once, hats off to those who do that twice for the real ending ‼️
Darius Twins was my favorite shoot em up game. You should check it out, I haven't seen you mention it yet.
Ive been playing shmups 4 along time love classics like ikaruga the MUSHA series etc but i understand if people find them frustrating i reccomend starting with axelay then parodius/gradius series its the best intro on the snes imho
had to comment since you said you're from minnesota. amazing.
