- Honestly you're not surprised that I made another impulse buy, are you? lol. But you also know that I love demonstrators and least units. And when I saw this golden beauty pop up on eBay I had to grab it. I didn't get totally taken but it wasn't a killer deal. But as most of you can probably agree with me on when you see those less common pieces that are part of your preferred flavor then you tend to grab them quickly. It'd be a lot easier if I modeled Union Pacific, BNSF, or Norfolk Southern lol. But it is what is. Let's see if all that glitters is gold.

Excellent history lesson on the builders Shane. First time i ever saw gold loco 👍😊😎
Yeah Alco was very proud of their Century Series locomotives. lol. Always glad to have you stop by, Dave!
Hi Shane, I checked in today on your channel to see you cleaning frames (watched the MKT Kato/Atlas RS-3 episode). You inspired me and gave me the guts to pull engines apart and work on them. Have some cleaning and adjusting to do on my Lifelike FA-1A/B and Alco C424.
Another thing I like a lot about your channel is that it is really you. Human. Personal. Thanks for the inspiration!
thank you, Frank! Be careful working on Lifelike locomotives. The older ones have soldered wires to the trucks that are difficult to re-solder if you have limited soldering skills such as myself, lol.
Nice!!!
Thank you Shane , nice looking locomotive
Thanks, William. I did a little work on it off camera and found out a problem. turns out there is some kind of slip in the drive mechanism. either the worm gears or the shafts or something. I'll have to take it completely apart and diagnose it. When I do i'll film the whole teardown.
Nice will it run video of the alco c-628 locomotive by atlas. I tell you I like the gold paint job on that locomotive looks very shiny.
It is. I wonder how striking the real ones were. Must have been some sight to see back in the day
Nice looking Alco I’m sure you will get that beauty running top notch in no time. Probably just needs a light cleaning and new lubricant
I'm hoping that's all it needs. Usually that is all most of then need. But these things are getting a little more complicated to disassemble as time goes on.
That’s the truth although I do like a challenge. I recently resurrected a few old prewar Lionel engines then I had to service one of my Kato n scale engines and I was lost for a minute lol.
Thanks for the warning. Only one with wires is a gp-18, I'll be careful 😊
Just now started watching your videos, gotta say, i really get alot out of them. i have been doing n scale for about 20 years. i like being able to see how other people do certain things. if you ever want to get away for a saturday, i am not far from you, maybe an hour. if you ever want to hang out, give me a shout. come up and run some trains.
Thanks Charles! I mostly just screw around and film it, lol. I need to dig this unit back out and actually try to repair it. If the fix is what I think it is then it won't be hard, and I have done out of the way to get stuff to do it, just been too lazy to actually do it, lol. Where abouts are ya?

Dude! Do a part 2!!!!!!
I'm leaning in that direction.
Nice locomotive… what a score….
Thanks Bryan!
I like all of you video I wish I could gat in the gave way
Judging by the sound of the motor RPM increase when you “gave it the gas,” which did not result in increased speed, I would check the driveline as well. There is a tiny male universal attached inside the flywheels. These have a bad reputation for splitting, causing the motor to slip. I have a few of the C628/630s from that run and all of them had to have at least one of these universals replaced.
I'll check that when I tear it down.
Hello Shane, I have four of those models from Atlas numbered 628-1, 628-2, 628-3 and 628-4. I am a sucker for demonstrator units too. The "ALCO Notch"! I bought them I think about late 2007 from Atlas website. I have troubles with them running and try to adjust the decoder, but having problems. Maybe all the times I moved and had it stored. It has a Lenz decoder and Atlas say I have to use a 1K resistor across the track to program. I will be replacing the decoder with a Digitrax DN163A0 since I use the Digitrax system for my layout. My locomotives had the front and rear handrails off when I got them brand new. The hair in yours most likely been used and in need of cleaning.
Hey Thomas. I have run decoders by pretty much everybody at this point. And I have to say that the ones that I have the most difficulty with are Lenz. Could just be because of their age and that things get better as technology and miniturization marches onward but all the Lenz stuff i have doesn't run well at all.
Shane, there is something all wrong about this. We have here a top-notch brand using tried designs, and it's stalling. Check you gauge and that of the wheels because there seems to be 'be jamming on curves. As you know, it could be a lot of things, and yes, maybe the track needs a rub down. But Hmm? I have mentioned on other occasions, lubrication. Whoever had this before you might have unwittingly used a highly non-conductive lubericant. I did that once and the loco STOPPED - clean out the oil and it ran and still runs like a Swiss watch. I wonder if Peco's conductive lubricant (can't remember the name and I find their website hard to navigate) might make a big difference. I'm not sure if it's the same thing as what t hey called 'Electrolube'?? Anyhow, if you try it, test thoroughly so as to cause no harm. Peco's website offer a technical advice function; worth asking whether this lube is OK for Atlas pickup-bearings. Hope this helps.
Hey Peter. I do have a wheel gauge checker somewhere! I just forget that I have it every single time I should be using it. I've also had some excessively greasy locomotives come to life after cleaning. Those were very old Atlas/Kato units.
I like building dioramas, one big one this time, size of a rectangular dining table. Observations of Moving dioramas appeals to myself, other than moving water wheels, signaling, (basic electronics) and alot of water features, hand building ( Scratch building) and personalised trees and buildings.
I'm not the guy that has any desire for prototypical designs, I like to have modules of smaller area's interchangeable.
From New Zealand, from my limited research it seems that most of our modern trains are Japanise builds.
Also it would be nice if you deleted this message, as I don't have time for a site, I just want to share person to person.
Thanks very much and I have great confidence that you're channel will prosper and be fruitful in the future.
I'm 60 years old and just trying to pass on knowledge.
Thanks Terry
lol Terry i'm not deleting this. From what i've seen New Zealand is absolutely deliriously beautiful. Not sure i'll ever be able to afford to visit there but it's very very high on my list if I ever have the means. Hope to see you around more.

Do you or anyone reading know of any decent train shops in or close to Grapevine TX?
We are driving down from NW AR to take my youngest to the day out with Thomas event. I’d like to get him a piece of rolling stock for his HO set and maybe something for my N-scale.
Welcome to the chaos, James! Unfortunately I don't personally know of any shops over in grapevine off of the top of my head so i'd have to Google it. The closest shop to there that I know of is in Addison which is about 35 minutes east of there north of Dallas.
