  • Technique Tuesday: The Hose Metaphors
What better time to share a real visual of a watering hose than the dog days of summer?!
I use these metaphors for our air passage way and flow often - and wondered how many people still use garden hoses for these to be useful 😂
The first metaphor is kinking the garden house - a parallel to something in our posture going out of alignment.
Just like the water flow slowing to a mere trickle when you kink the garden hose, a similar thing happens when to your airflow when your posture pulls.
And THEN we have to rely on muscles other than those in our core and trunk to create sound and support. Like your throat, jaw, tongue, etc. And then we get fatigued. Sound familiar?
Second metaphor: this is about efficient airflow and support.
When we align our posture and zip up (actively engage without gripping) our core support muscles we pressurize and streamline the air just like putting your thumb over most of the nozzle of the hose.
Otherwise, the air is flowing well, but may not be used to keep those vocal cords vibrating consistently - what that means is you may hear breath in the sound or an inconsistent vibrato.
Questions? Did you find the visual helpful?

For clarification , you suggesting that the high tongue position is to be used in all situations ? 🙏🏼

I think she said the high tongue position is bad, like a kink in the hose.
