Technique Tuesday: Fast Moving Air
Technique Tuesday: Fast moving air
A.k.a. The sassy cat paw
This is a great way to not only reinforce the high arch of the tongue but to also show why we arch the tongue -
Fast moving air.
The air moves up and over the high arch, says hi to your soft palate, comes down the slide of your tongue and results in:
Clear, speech like vowels that balance warmth and brightness and stay on your energized breath.
How do you work on these things?

Crescent Moon | Verses for Children with pianist Ka Nyoung Yoo Tomorrow we begin a journey towards recording an album of Erik Franklin's art songs. It's one that began during the pandemic when Erik finally had time to sit down and pour out music onto the page. Since then I have been a fan and champion of his art song. So we DO need to spend focused time...

      Hi! yes I come from a "high back of tongue" school of technique where the tip of the tongue either floats in the mouth or is rooted in the root of the tongue (well behind the lower front teeth). And when I sing many vowels, especially "ee", I feel the sides of my tongue touching my back upper molars.

    Oh my god! The voice is unbelievable! Amazing and wonderful. But I have a question about the technique, did you exhale through your nose before the voice every time? When practicing it's okay ،but when you're on stage and singing a long text, the air is very important! Is there a way to direct the exhalation to the nose without exhaling the air before the voice and without Spacing the vocal cords before the sound ?

    • @ClaireGallowaySoprano
      @ClaireGallowaySoprano 2 місяці тому

      Yes, eventually as you guide your air through the nose you can start the sound essentially simultaneously. Breathing out through the nose doesn't space the cords, though - that's part of why it's great!

    • @nmkjhgvvcgucj7683
      @nmkjhgvvcgucj7683 2 місяці тому

      @ClaireGallowaySoprano excuse me Claire, 💐 - when you exhale through your nose the soft palate drops and causes the larynx to rise! Right? -Is the onset (exhalation through the nose first or by closing the vocal cords through، the Valsava maneuver, vocal fry, etc.? -Does this work for male voices? ------------------------------------ I hope I haven't tired you with too many questions ☺️ I've studied under many opera teachers so I have a lot of conflicting concepts 🤭 Thank you Miss Claire for your time.💐

    • @ClaireGallowaySoprano
      @ClaireGallowaySoprano 2 місяці тому

      @@nmkjhgvvcgucj7683 I would say the soft palate doesn't have to fully drop, it can stay lifted allowing air flow through the nose. The larynx does not need to rise either - I find both of these easiest to gauge when I keep my tongue arched into "ng". The onset happens because the air is already flowing (through the nose) so it operates like a very gentle start of the vowel, letting the cords simply flow and oscillate (think Bernoulli's principle) Yes, it absolutely works for any voice type!

She says, "Regarding Claire, she has a lovely voice and we are certainly open to discussing her for recording for any of your music in the future. For any other projects, I'll send her information to our Production Team and they will reach out if they might be a good fit." So, I have several works that require a soprano voice. If you are interested, then, let me know. They appear to be interested in your services for other projects (as they appear on the manifest). When they show up, I will pass it on to you. This is something I'm still trying to figure out how to explain - it's my way of trying to say you don't want to slam your vocal cords together which sometimes feels like we press down on the larynx with the tongue or otherwise. So somehow picturing that it comes from the flow of the air under and through the cords often helps a gentle closure.

    Hello. So, when we inhale, do our belly rise up first, below belly button and then breath goes up like wave or when we take a breath, our ribs expand lateral and we send that air down to the pelvic floor. I ask this beacuse if I breath first in my ribs lateral, I end up with neck and shoulders breathing?

    • @ClaireGallowaySoprano
      @ClaireGallowaySoprano 3 місяці тому

      I would say this is sort of individual to each person - and very connected to what technique you are studying. There are many schools of thought on breath support. If you feel that your neck and shoulders are too involved when you breath into your ribs first, experiment with what it feels like to instead breathe low and work your way up. You could also try breathing into your low back - or the space between the low ribs and the hip bones!

    • @ClaireGallowaySoprano
      @ClaireGallowaySoprano 5 місяців тому

      Great question - I would say, try a slow transition. Sing with your ear plugs and focus on the sensations. What is your support doing (check in with your ribs, the base of your sternum, your back, your collarbones, and even your low belly below your waistline/belt), then sing the same phrase with one ear plug and see if you can keep the *sensations* the same - try not to listen to your voice, listen to your body. As that starts to become more reliable, take the other earplug away and try cupping your hands in front of your ears and keep focusing on sensation over sound. Let me know!
