  • Ep. 128 NEW GLASS ON GLASS MOSAIC NATIVITY COMMISSION and a Funky Chunky Mosaic Bird!!!
    Welcome to my studio!
0:13 Jumping right into a new glass on glass Nativity. I have a great frame that will work well as it has two different ways to display it! I make a few changes from a previous design. This includes centering the stable more, pitching the roof so the star is in the sky, and adding a dove.
2:29 Starting with the stable, I begin selecting glass. For this glass on glass mosaic I have pulled out my homemade light table (Thank you, David!) Looking at it with light behind it adds a whole new dimension for consideration. I select a dark brown that is more opaque so that the light will look amazing behind the sky. Then I pick out a beautiful streaky blue/purple. Then I light up some greens and the one with brown works best for me.
5:34 Glass cutting begins with scoring some strips for the barn with my pistol grip glass scorer and snapping them with running pliers. Then I turn to my work bench and begin nipping the roof of the stable. I am using MAC glue as it works well for glass on glass (gog) projects.
7:05 Next, I tackle the faces. Using the same technique that I used on my previous Nativity, I draw facial features and then dip my diamond tipped engraver in water and follow the lines. I use Sharpie marker and cover the engraved glass, wiping off with a wet paper towel. They all seem to work well on the actual mosaic. The engraver can be difficult to control as it wants to skid across the surface of the glass and these are TINY details.
10:03 Time to tackle the halo for baby Jesus. Using a glass noodle, I melt it using gravity and a lighter. I had to fiddle with it a bit so it would lay flat on the base.
10:53 Introducing a wonderful, funky chunky bird base that I can mosaic in no time! HA! Starting with blue faceted beads and E6000, I outline a bigger wing. Then I add some glass rounds to the belly. Next, some silver teardrop beads are added to the tip of the tail and the neckline. I add an oversized dark blue glass round for the eye, then blue glass in a wave pattern under the neckline. Some mirror, some more wavy blue and then before I know it, the tail is done! HOLD ON! This bird is fun, but it is really just me procrastinating on the Nativity that I need to be working on.
12:47 Back to the mosaic Nativity! Jesus has some cream and white glass added and then hay that is a bit darker. Mary has white and light blue over her head and then blue glass for the chiton.
14:13 I'm using the perfect glass for this little sheep! It has just a bit of wooly texture and is a bit creamy in color.
14:28 I show one more change that I made from the original design. I switch Joseph's chiton to dark red and the chlamys to light red so they will show up better against the dark background. Then I tackle a bit more of the stable.
That's Putting It Together, Ep. 128. Thanks for watching. See you next time!

Wow what a difference some light makes! Great demo. I'm such a novice my mind went straight to using translucent types of glass. Now I can see how that would vastly limit the actual possibilities. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Love the bird too! Early Happy Holidays greetings to you and those you love.

Thank you so much! I think it just depends on the look you want. There are plenty of beautiful stained glass projects out there using all kinds of glass. I just thought that if the light source was close, like a candle, it would show too much unless the glass had some opacity. It's definitely tricky business figuring it out!

You are so kind! I found the birds at a garage sale. There were five of them for $1 each! The hunt is part of the joy I think.

Does the engraver give you more control than a Dremel?

Probably about the same. But I carry the engraver in my teaching crate since it is so small.

It is hard to find these days. Korey Dollar sells a GOG glue, but I haven’t tried it. I don’t do very much glass on glass.
