Thanks soo much for pointing out these issues. I really did have this lower ball joint issue and i took a u turn and my wheel literally did came off a year back
The second one door lock actuator: exactly the same doors passenger and back side of the passenger door have issues.
and lastly the HVAC servo Motor i still have this issue.
you have literally made things so much easy for me instead of going to different garages and checking finding out the faults.
Thanks !
Thks for the video I just bought a gs300 99 with under 335,000 miles still runs strong. That lower ball joint is my only issued I'm getting worked on right now.
Thanks bro, I’m going to purchase either an GS300 or IS350. Appreciate the advice.
what about the brake booster
What about the battery draining after everything else is replaced
Pro tip from a guy that builds computers for a living, you can use rubbing alcohol to clean electronic components. Reason being is it evaporates VERY quickly, especially near heat. You're welcome.
+George Muller Thanks for the tip!
just like to add on here that the alcohol you should use to clean electronics is Isopropyl alcohol at an alcohol rating of 70-99%, using anything less or hydrogen peroxide will leave unwanted additives on the sensor or circuitry
My car says my battery is hot, why is that???
Terminals.
@@mikes3852 alternator could be overcharging battery
Just got one today for 400$. So blessed and grateful since it was blocks from me 😅🎉. Long love JDM
I bought my 2006 GS300 used in 2010. It had about 62k miles then. Now it has just over 361k miles and while it has some issues it still drives very well.
My GS300 was bullet proof. It did have the lower ball joint separation issue though. Luckily it happened as I pulled out the driveway.
Jay My 02 GS300 ball joint broke when I was driving 70MPH on the freeway. Luckily no other cars were around and I was able to come to a controlled stop. Not fun dragging the car across from the carpool lane all the way to the shoulder.
I might buy one. 144k miles. 4500. Southern car. Rust free beauty
How much did it cost to replace the lower bawl joints? I am not a mechanic and I have to pay somebody to do it for me
@@nestosolo I bought new ball joints for $90 on ebay, labor charge is $200 at my local shop to install them.
@@nestosolo carparts dot com i got them for 20 dollars
I’ve had 3 of these and LS400s also and the rear spherical lower bushes always need replacing and are difficult to do for diy, and I’ve had a heater core leak in one which was a nightmare to replace, full dash out. Other than that and a bit of paint fade they are bulletproof, no rust, 2J is hard to kill. Great cars.
Best car in the world ...this car was my dream car in high school and I'm so glad I picked this car. I have had this car over 15+ years and I love it. I think if I have to let it go...I would cry! I even purchased a 2007 LS and I still love to drive my GS while my LS sits in the garage. Crazy thing is my V8 LS saves more on gas then my V6 GS. Both cars are amazing but my GS is my daily driver. So if you hate cars that have major issues get a Lexus...in my experience all u have to do is change the tires and regular maintenance...my GS is nearing 400k and it still rides smooth and the AC is blowing colder than anyother car I have been in. I trust this car with my life and my family to ensure I get from point A to B without being left on the side of the road.
Any carbon build up issues?
I hate my Lexus. Replaced the radiator last week now the water pump seems like it’s going bad. Need a new abs pump too. I hate these cars.
I recently bought a gs, I’ve had every other model and the gs is definitely my favorite. 400k is nuts and I can’t wait to hit those numbers, cheers
Yeah, I agree with you, it's the most reliable car on the planet, it can last for a life time.
You are living the dream sir one day I got a gs 🙏
this guy is SPOT ON ! i am gs300 owner since 3 years and faced the same issues. But apart from that the car is solid and reliable.
where u live ? what is the KM/ per liter
Interesting
Me too. Mine has 110kmi. And I'm having loss of power issues.
@@shadetreemech290 it’s could be your spark plugs or your intake resonator is cracked.
Big difference between the gs300 and vs 400 and 430??? Been looking for the v8 engines but can only find the v6 in actual decent condition with lower miles seems as if all the v8 engines have over 200k at this point
I have a 2004 now with about 105000. The video is spot on. I have replaced 3 of the four O2 sensors. I have replaced 3 of the 4 door actuators. I had the problem with the defrost/heater diverter door motor not properly working but what I found is that there is a small worm gear on the motor that engages a gear that actuates the door and it slips a little on the shaft after years of service.. My motor was fine. I slid the worm back to its position on the shaft and I guess it's good for another 10 years for more. Other problems: a noisy heat shield on the exhaust -- ripped it off. Air bag sensor in the passenger seat -- broken ground wire. Forward-most leather panel on the passenger seat cracked and split -- replaced the seat bottom cover with an aftermarket that matches perfectly and looks great. A/C condenser went bad after 15 years with no leaks until then -- had it replaced and recharged. (Absolutely the strongest A/C of any car i have ever ridden in regardless of price.) I'm getting ready for a set of plugs, wires and leaking valve covers gaskets but in all, this car has been bullet proof! The design is classic. It's fun to drive, quiet, surefooted and brisk though not a racer. The fit and function are perfect. Headlights are OUTSTANDING to light up the road. Brakes (2 sets of rotors and pads in its life) are incredibly strong and fade free. The paint is perfect -- wax it twice a year and it still looks like its new even though it's parked in Florida sun. Exceptionally reliable!!!!! I will probably have this car until the wheels fall off -- and then buy another one just like it!!
+Conrad T's Thanks for the feedback!
Which aftermarket seat cover did you get? I’m looking for one myself
@@Tomy_Honk I found it on Ebay. Leather matched really well. I looked through old order on ebay but couldn't find it. company was in Texas.
Ok -- side note: This year (that is 16 years after it was new): 1) I am replacing the last of the four O2 sensors. 2) The knock sensor on the front bank required replacing -- really hard to get to but aftermarket parts are really cheap. 3) I replaced the valve cover gasket (leaking oil) plus the plugs, plug wires, and spark pack connectors plus I had to do first aide on the wires that control the spark packs because all this stuff is down in a high heat area on the top of the engine where everything plastic becomes brittle. Electric tape and shrink tubing did the trick to replace crumbing wire insulation. The job was NOT tough and there's a really really REALLY GREAT video on youtube to show you how. ua-cam.com/video/Ktc1hzWEmyw/v-deo.html The procedure is a little involved but not hard. Take your time and label all the connectors and hoses with tape and a marker and you'll be fine. Label all your hardware as you remove it and put it in zip lock bags. Watch that video and make notes of all the things the guy says. I did and I ordered everything and had it on hand the day I did the job.
@@conradts3338 😂okay now I dont want my dream car no more. Well not as a daily
At about 300,000 miles I had to replace everything that he mentioned and 4,000 bucks later I had a brand new GS400
300,000 miles...lol that speaks volume on these cars for real
@@T5_T-Rell toyota lol
can I message you privately & ask you something? I am about to buy a 99 lexus gs300 & want some opinions. My ig is @mother.art0 if you have some time
@@aureya777 it's a great car. The engine in that car is very reliable and a lot of kids are after it. Get it while you can and take care of it.
I'm at 287k miles right now on the GS300....only thing that's gone bad so far is those damn door actuators and the brake master. outside of that...it runs like a champ.
Thank you for this concise video. My car literally has all these problems when I bought it second hand. Looks like it's time to get to work
Bought one and find your videos so helpful!!!!
How is it? I see a 2001 with 99k on it
ive drive gs300 22 years i really love this car 2jz engine can sport and elegance, i will keep drving till it die
Thanks for the help I have a 2004 gs300. Going to check all those things real soon
Great job!
Have or had everything out of that list!
Didn’t know why my AC doesn’t change the direction, so now I know.
Mileage 252000, going strong.
Also would add main wiring harnesses that goes to spark plugs. The insulation is tend to decompose and shorten circuits to cause the misfiring.
Valve cover gasket, steering rack bushings somebody already mentioned in the comments, agree with that as well.
jjust had that issue with my wires 230k running strong again now
I truly love you all 1A!!!
Thanks for this useful information looking at buying a gs300
Loved my 2005 GS300, but the ball joint failure happened while driving in traffic (no one hurt, luckily). Lexus fixed it under warranty at the time, but they had the car for three weeks. Currently driving an LS460 F-Sport and I kinda miss my old GS. Loved that car so much if I found a fully sorted 2005, I might get another.
Just stopped by to say that the 2nd Gen GS is the greatest car ever made!! - Noel out.
+Noel Reynoso Thanks for the feedback!
Glad to hear that. Just got myself a 1998 GS 300 with 60500 km in it here in Perth WA. Looks spanking brand new, though I asked my friend Lexus mechanic to do the 100 point check up for peace of mind.
My 99 GS300, has 135,000klm, that’s about 84,000miles for you Americans, I replaced two controllers for my climate control but still need to replace the other one, my passenger gets cold air but I get ice cold air, but my back isn’t what it used to be so it’ll wait til I come good. It can be a bit thirsty so I may change out the o2sensors. I’ve had 40 cars in my 67yrs. this is by far the best.
I would add valve cover gaskets, vvti gear o-ring, and steering rack bushings.
Additionally, catalytic converter degradation and replacement as well as the bearing guide in the steering rack. I love my 2GS300 though, I do not plan on selling it any time soon. The majority of "problems", I would consider regular maintenance and can easily be addressed in moments of preventative maintenance.
Need to add Brake booster unit too.
Thanks for this video!! Keep posting! 👍👍👍

I will share this video with someone I know that owns this generation gs300
Mass sensor makes all the difference. He is absolutely right, gas mileage and power will suffer along with possible idle problems.
+Antonio Torres Thanks for the feedback!
I own gs300 and all the problems are highly relatable.
Well boo! this guy’s hilarious 😂

i have gs300 this generation. 210,000 miles. I am devotee of cleaning the Mass AIrflow Sensor with the specific MAS spray once a year and jet cleaner in the fuel tank two or three times a year. THe only major issues I have had timing chain seal, one coil. Just yesterday the starter motor failed for the first time so we hit it with a hammer. I am going to replace it later in the week. Coincidentally, i think the throttle body has a carbon build up so that's also on the list later this week. Pretty easy to self service by the way.
this guy is awesome .. he better be taken cared of by 1A Auto
I would definitely add to the list that the gas hood struts go bad considering I'm using a 2x4 and he's using a pry bar
+Adam Thanks for the feedback!
My door actuators, valve cover leak, brake booster, 75 misfire codes, and brakes gone... all fixed in the next two weeks. Thanks bud 👌 (besides the door actuators lol)

What year is your GS?
Are parts expensinve im looking into buying one ?
@@JesusSanchez-yu2xh don’t buy one, I hate these cars
To be honest I have a GS430 2001 and it's the BEST car I ever own. I get offers to sell it monthly. My personal mechanic says if you take good care of it, it's known to get 500,000 miles. I have 230,000. Just regular maintenance and had to replace driver's door actuator. This car is a dream with lots of power.
my 97 is having probs last 10 years, 260.000, stays in the garage, 20 mile round trip to work only, frt end probs at 10 years, then throttle body, next a/c, steering wheel motor, check engine light, radio, upholstery, very squeaky now, engine in good shape....very happy with it
Bottom part of intake resonator cracks overtime because of heat from header. Car runs bad/hesitates .
Valve cover gasket leak is super annoying. Eventually leaked oil fills up the plug wells and car starts to misfire/stall. Also harness plugs to coil pack get brittle and break.
Rollover valve tends to crack on top and throws emission code. There's no service panel under the rear seat like fuel pump so you have to lower the tank to get to it.
When front suspension starts to make noises, very difficult to pinpoint the faulty part.
VVTI cam gear O-ring leaks oil.
Gs300 is a solid car otherwise in my experience!
+RS GAEL Thanks for the feedback!
i had a ball joint pop at 100km/h. take care of that before it happens.
the actual sensation of the ball joint separating was the steering got really really heavy all of a sudden, then suddenly the tyre spins 90 degrees and lodges itself back into the wheel well. the car tried to pull into the oncoming lane, by i wrestled it onto the side of the road.
+gharkun Thanks for the feedback! Glad to hear you are safe!
sounds scary.
This guy is spot one - I've had every single one of these go bad on my Lexus except the lower ball joint. The lock actuators are super pricy so I haven't replaced them. I rebuilt one and it was a super pain in butt. I've replaced my B2S2 02 sensor twice and upstream B1S1 once. My 2003 GS300 has 185k and is making squeaking noises, which I thought were the shocks. I'm going to see if there's any play there and replace. About $95 each from Napa.
+Puffy Elvis Thanks for the feedback!
As soon as he said ball joints I knew what he was gonna say. I had that issue last year and my right tire jammed straight into my fender and messed it up.

Love my 2004 GS300. still got it today. Not a fan of IS or new styling.

only replaced the top 02 sensor at 80K

For those of u wanting to know what actually goes bad on a gs lol fuel pump brake abs module throttle position sensor and for those of u that replaced ur door actuator and the keyless locking isn’t working take ur door panels off their will be a little black box I don’t remember what it’s called but that’s what u need to replace
Any find out what the little black box is called? I thought one should just replace the actuator. Are you saying this isn't correct? Thanks in advance.
very helpful
I've actually seen a greasable ball joint burst out of the socket while being greased because it was so worn out
Thank you for the video 💯🫡. You remind me of Seth green btw lol 😂
“ if it works good your gonna have to go and replace this “ 😂😂😂😂
A helpful video
A year ago, my Vvt solenoid went bad on me 4 hours from home. Car was shaking like it had a Cam built from satan at idle. Had to put the car in neutral at red lights and hold throttle at 1500-2000k to keep her running. But she made it 267 miles all the way home 😂😂 got home an ordered the sensor from you guys. No problems since. I’ve owned 3 of these over the last 15 years. The body style is timeless, my current one has over 300k on it and 98% of the mechanical parts are original.
+anthony delgrosso Thanks for the feedback!
I know this an old comment but did u get a check engine light when the solenoid went bad?

Yep all my doors lock besides the drivers side lol. And it’s currently getting a ball joint put on it as I type this
You hot the nail on the heads-up. I pretty much have had all these issues plus some. Also the water pump tends to leak and needs to be replaced with the timing belt. Overall it's still a good car. Now I need to have my ball joints checked LOL 😂

The enigne doent have turbos so thats why its last for 100,000 of thousands of miles and over build block
those AC solenoids are a pain... also the gas tank vent valve happened =( oh and the injector harnesses get brittle and crack over time...
Were the parts expensive ?
Fixed drivers door actuator today.
A real painful process.
Need to remove door handle, lock, etc
They wouldn't do that just out the blue. True, and like the Avalon, the GS2 had upper AND lower ball joint issues but it wouldn't just all of a sudden break.
The blue on the MAF is the air temp sensor. The air sensing Is inside the center tube.
I am going to.get one on sunday, i will definitely check those ball joints before. I will need to drive back home 5.5h drive. Is there anything else i need to know guys? Please write the comment thank you in advance
On my 2000 Gs the radio display is the problem. The original one failed under warranty and was replaced but the current one failed a couple years ago.
Yes mine lights up but no longer displays the station. How did you fix it?

Mine is an 02 GS300 VVTI and I have a bad parasitic draw issue from somewhere and have checked all the common sense things it could be. I have the same door lock issue, the same air intake sensor issue and i hear a noise behind the dash when the car is off. Sounds kinda clunky, like the cd changer but it’s not the changer. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
I agree 100% on this problems cuz one day the ball joint broke on us in the middle of the street, If I could go back to that day, amma change the shitty ball joint.
1AAUTO I’ve been watching yalls vids since I was 13 years old back in 2008-2009 an have bought many parts so can you please answer this question?
I’m about to buy one an the guy is making me sign a paper saying if anything happens after purchase it’s sold as is. So I’m wondering if these have ECU Problems that’s my only concern he said the car dies after running for 20 mins an brought it to shop an shop said it was lose terminal but he still wants me to sign the paper… plz lmk it’s a Gen 2 GS300 1998-2001 Pre Facelift
Another problem on the 2nd gen is the rust build up on the rear wheel wells
I'm having issues with my Struts on my '99 Lexus GS300.. do u have anything about that?
Definitely catalytic converters 😫 I've had that issue with 2 of my 3 GS's
What was your issues with cats , was it just the gasket? Or you had to replace the cat?
I've got a ecu code reading cat efficiency down
How much did u pay to replace it ?
How many miles?
Every time I turned right a loud squeak would come from the front , it echoed around the whole neighborhood. Took it to the mechanic and they told me the lower ball joints needed replacement, luckily I didn’t get hurt . I was driving it around like that for a month 😂
I love my 2001 GS300 but the heater is not working can you please help me with this issue...
had to change the VVTI gear on a 02 GS300 that i just bought. Maybe I should buy the solenoid too, but I haven't gotten an engine code for it. Should I just replace it?
If it is not giving you issues just leave it.
My ABS and Brake lights came on in the dash. At the same time my shift intrlock, power window switches, sun roof switch, heated seat switches, the heater controls, and the rear defroster all quit working. Is there a common fix for this type of problem?
Had a similar problem with my 2004 Rav4. Malfunctioning fuse block fusiable link. Intermittent failure until I figured it out.
The main issues you smoothed right over
I was unaware that the word "vehicle" had the letter "r" in it
