Will you try smoke shading?
This is a really interesting technique and I really like the result.
YES!
I already use Reikland Fleshshade for other washing and glazing purposes, so I'd say I'm halfway there already. :D
100% will try! I'll use different paints but that's just because I'm used to what I'm used to and have what I have!
Really cool video.
I am also a big fan of that and its predecessor, my old trusty, Sepia wash... LOL@@Izzboticus
I really enjoy videos that talk about "traditional fine art" techniques and how they can/do/should apply to minis!
Thank you! I thought I would try something different
I have been here long enough to remember your Baroque painting video, too! @@LylaMev
Art history references AND a technique guide together? Yes please!
I'm so here for it
DUDE - This is great. I know one of your recent videos you mentioned needing a break, and honestly this shows this shows the results of what can come from being kind to yourself and stepping away to take care of your own life. Looking into art history techniques and apply it to modern day miniature painting, Bravo! Not only is this a great tutorial but also a great little art history lesson.
Lyla, you are my absolute favorite channel! I’ve learned so much cool stuff from you. And every time you post a new vid, I learn more. I’m looking forward to trying this new technique. Thank you for being you! 🙂
So glad. Lyla, to find you still at it - posting great videos to guide us through our own miniatures journey.
I love it when you incorporate classical techniques and ideas from the masters
I love these classical art technique videos!
I love all of Lyla Mev's videos!
One of your best videos. Like the breakdown of da Vinci’s style and how it applies. And including your mistake and the fix, bonus.
Your best video to date!
Linking between artist painting and miniature-artist painting was genius!
I absolutely love soft shading! When I think of Renaissance style, sfumato is a defining feature. That mini turned out excellent!!! I’ve only recently tried underpainting on miniatures for some reason, despite doing it on canvas, and the things one can learn from varying ones approach when you’ve “just been doing this” for a while are awesome and very worthwhile.
There is always one dude who comments negative stuff all the time. Please dont listen to people like this. It's fun to experiment, it's fun to learn, and it's fun to paint. If they don't get that... well... there is a reason they dont have videos, and you do. 😅 Love the videos! I always look forward to them! Hope to see many more!
Lovely seeing fine art techniques applied to miniatures I love the end result.
I think this is my favorite video I've seen from your channel. Love it!
Beautiful! I will absolutely try this.
Painting Like The Masters, let's goooo!
I watch a lot of painting videos and I can say that yours are superior because it has kitties
You are the best in the biz, thank you for all you do for the hobby!
Great video! I will try this asap! My favorite videos are like these that teach me about painting beyond miniatures!
Cool advice, and nice to see you discuss the problems. Love your videos.
Great video. These art history applied to mini painting videos set you apart from other mini painters on UA-cam. Also - this is one of the best minis you've painted in this channel so far (IMHO).
Absolutely loved the finished mini. Not got the patience for this style yet, but definitely something to aim for, thanks
Super informative and a smooth technique. Great video!
Great to see you back, @LylaMev! Great session btw. Loved this! Going to use this!
Looks amazing, can't wait to try it!
As someone with probably a larger than baseline amount of art history experience, it's so refreshing to see you presenting ways of translation the techniques I've learned into methods of painting miniatures.
Loved every minute of it.
Especially Mochi.
Damn, I have to try this on my next painting session :O
Thank you for talking about this,
It is really interesting to see traditional techniques on minis
That is outstanding!
Absolutely stunning. Love it.
Learned. So. Much.
Thanks for all the info.
Relating modern mini painting to classical roots is a cool topic. Also, good use of kitties in the ad read. 😹
One of my favorite miniatures that you've painted. I love all the earthy tone colors.
I'll tell you what. I switched to natural bristle brushes and was amazed at the detail i was able to get. Definitely a must to do any of these washes in order to get into those fine lines.
That's a great looking result and it does look very unique. I will try it.
I have got to try this and see how I can make it work in my painting. A most informative video, as usual, Miss Lyla!
Excellent video as always!
I can really see where this will apply to my next project! Thank you so much for the content!
Thank you, thisis much appreciated ❤
Amazing work
Fascinating!
Definitely a technique to try. Thanks for this.
Good to see you back and superb video
Seems like a good technique in my toolbox. I'll definitely give it a try.
I LOVE mini painting with an art history twist!
Really enjoyed the video and historic art lesson. As an engineer, my education missed art appreciation and history. Keep ‘em coming 😊
2:40 I think it's a warm build up for your archer miniature that that turn out well for an art piece display.
This looked really good, you easily could have stopped before glazing in your base colour and edge highlighting, but those things also added a nice touch. This video showed how this technique could be used to do an easy, intermediate, AND expert paintjob.
I've done similar stuff but i could never explain it to someone else as well as you did. I also learned new ways to do it better thanks to you. 👏
Only important question in the end: "Does she glow?"
Answer: Yes! Beautiful tutorial on how to apply traditional techniques to the (relatively) new art of mini painting.
Thanks Lyla!
Every stage looked freaking amazing! I hate when the mini looks like garbage while painting and you just have to "trust the process". When I can get excited at every stage, it helps me stay motivated.
Interesting! I had never thought of trying a historical technique like this.
This was great!
wow, 😮, the skin is incredible, love this model
I love the Fine Art stuff. It reminds me of Art Appreciation at Uni. It was fun then, but never used again. Thank you! Love the look of the product, but I barely have time to paint at all. I cannot see me doing this.
It looks like you got through the burn out. Glad to see your video.
I've been meaning to practice glazing for a while, so definately going to give this a go :)
Great stuff friend loving all your stuff 👏👍
Amazing again
I enjoyed watching this video and absolutely loved the finished mini. Have no intention of trying it myself. None whatsoever.
so, this video just popped up on my feed, and ive recently started a few armys (Warhammer 40k), and been struggling with one, as i cannot find how i want to do them... im going to grab an extra model ive got and try this, and if it works, then i may just have my Krieg army figured out, thank you! and even if i dont, I REALLY like this style, and will definatly try more of it with other models! thank you so much! i cannot wait to try this!
I likely won't be trying this with acrylics, but I'd certainly be interested in applying the workflow with oils. Always fun to have a new technique.
Love a good fine art / traditional art and mini painting crossover.
Great video. I feel like this kind of approach would work well for my film noir projects. I want to try to do something like this with oils to get a good golden age pulp cover art vibe.
great video
Looks great, even when you zoom in. The eyes are perfect too.
Hello there Lyla I don't paint miniatures myself I mostly build aircraft cars or tanks 1.72 scale 1.24 scale and 1.35 scale but I find your work fascinating your models are amazing you are a true master of the hobby so all the best from here in the UK and happy modeling 👍😁🐱
Great topic for a video! I've sometimes wondered if you could make impressionism or pointilism work on minis too.
The new camera angle for the talking segments is great!
Take this Leonardo here we gooo!
Great insightful video. Will I use it in most of my painting. Probably not as not of it is in 15mm where high contrast is very important and soft gradients wash out the model. However, I will add this to my bag of tricks when my models are much larger, usually between 25mm to 120mm.
Golden makes the best acrylics in the industry
Painting the Light is a great channel
This is awesome! Very fun way to transpose a traditional oil painting technique into acrylic miniature painting. But maybe to take this a step further you could skip the translation and try paint a miniature with oils? That way instrad of glazing you block out your colours and blend in the brush, would be interesting to see if it works!
It's wonderful video. Love the Renaissance art as the origin. However, have you looked into doing a miniature with just oil paints?
Great job on that face!
I'm going to buy a model/mini at Adepticon specifically to try this.
The result looks amazing, but my focus right now is still to get my minis somehow done. Perhaps I can come back to this technique in the far future. Can you tell us/me, what miniature that is? Or did I miss it in the video?
You had me at "Renaissance technique"...
Hi, which golden matte medium are you using? They have a half dozens acrylic mediums.
Love this figure. Where is it from? Looks like a blast to paint
I'll give it a go, but it probably won't be a big feature of my current project (repainting the Empire army I started back in 3rd edition WHFB).
Uhmm, no I will not try smoke shading. I do however love the exposure to new painting techniques. I had never heard of Sfumato before. Thank you for the vid. Keep it up.
What model is that it looks really nice and id love to paint it?
having trouble painting eyes on models . do you have a video or are you planning on doing one?
A great looking figure
Which matte medium are you using
Underpainting aka Grisaille probably better using satins tbh the matt finish texture is very grainy that's how its matt on dry. Do all in satins or gloss and then fix with gloss varnish this Id do in the process before (10;40 in the vid). do other fishing steps (starting at 10:40 in the vid) then seal with Matt / or / Satin varnish to complete. Nice paint job. I would use speed paints with these techniques or well, inks (close enough for government work) or make your acrylics like oils with "Newsh" or closer to a glaze with retarder and thinner and not so much just water (to avoid stain lines) .
What miniature is this? Its very well sculpted.
What medium were you using here? I'd love to try a medium with that much open time, but "golden acrylic matte medium" seems to describe quite a few different products!
Trying to figure that out as well. lol
The brand is Golden Acrylic and the product is Matte Medium, it’s the first result on google
@Noxlux527 If you read the description of their basic matte medium it doesn't really match with her description. It says nothing about increasing drying time while a few of the other ones do..
Exactly. Their basic matte medium also doesnt seem to come in a dropper bottle like the one used in this video, while several of their others do. I'd rather ask for clarification than risk wasting money on a medium that doesnt have the properties I'm interested in!
@@Hudston Same here bro. I'm thinking its maybe the OPEN Acrylic Medium but im not sure. The Satin Glazing Liquid does increase drying time too but is satin. lol
If you’re glazing it should naturally blend anyway right?
Nope! There can still be a harsh line from glazing. It depends on the opacity
I'll pass on the smoking but I will take a glass of bubbly.
Normally I don't smoke while painting, but why not? 😉😊
Glaaaaazes… so you are secretly Dana Howl?
This mini is perfect for my wife's character! What is it?
Feedback - It was really difficult following what you did because the story kinda jumps around with lessons learned along the way.
Still enjoying the content
No matter how hard I try I don't see a clear differences between glazes and washes in consistency of the paint to water or medium ratio 😢
Remember to like and comment to appease the almighty algorithm 😅❤️👍🏼
Thank you!
Bet a lot of painters smoke while shading
Drink Reikland Fleshshade?
Better to not say anything at all.. I can’t quite get there so here goes… “unnecessary comment about how good you look”.
Ahh now that’s over I can watch the painting techniques thank goodness.
It's not advisable to paint over your own skin. Some pigments are carcigenic.
