The most important tip for mini painting; do it again. Screw it up, do it again. Or screw it up, undo it, do it again. And again. And again. Until it looks the way you want it to look. Just getting used to messing up and redoing it without it being a big drama will save you so much stress.
@@naugladur8534 Depends what you screwed up! With paint in the wrong place, I find a cotton bud is effective. Or if needed, paint over your mistake, take it back to base coat.

As an intermediate painter, it is nice to see how another, more advance, painter's mind works. I do many of these things instinctually, but having a more talented painter list the techniques off and give examples of when they use them helps out. I will have to practice some of the techniques I don't commonly use to improve! Thanks for the video!
That was an excellent breakdown of the most common mini painting techniques. Very helpful that you essentially defined each step. I know a lot of mini painters that confuse several of these techniques. I had never even heard of lining before, and I've been painting minis on and off for 20 years.
I have to admit: as a crafty DM who like to read and write as much as I paint minis and makes terrains, I often have to choose how I manage my time between each sessions... so most of my paint jobs (minis and/or terrains) are made with the intention to look just descent for a D&D game; a lot of base paints, dry brush, a bit of high lights "ici et là" and "voilà" I'm done. (Sorry for my french;) But... sometimes I like to spend a bit more time depending of the project. I'll definitely keep in mind your video and advices to step up my game! First time I have seen crosshatching used was on Squidmar Masterclass video, but you are actually the first person to describe it to me! Now looking at some Sergio Calvo pieces, he uses it as well, very interesting, it seems to add more information to surface of the miniature. Thank you for the inspiration :)

Yeah, this was a really good video. It might not have gone into super depth of each technique, but it showed basically what to do WHEN. Thanks. Some of this stuff I know all too well... other stuff (wetblending) I've basically NEVER done. I've probably stuck with washes and such to try and build that initial gradient, before moving into some sort of layering and then edge highlighting.

I've been painting minis for Marvel Crisis Protocol since May, and I am just trying to learn wet blending now. I have layering, edge highlighting, stippling, and cross hatching (cross hatching was my natural technique before I knew what it was). Slowly trying to add more skills to my toolbelt as I get deeper into this hobby. Thanks for the tutorial!
I’ve been wet blending wrong for 20 years!!! What I really love about this video is how clearly you explain very specific techniques and their proper application. There are a lot of great painters on UA-cam but a lot of them can’t really communicate what they’re doing and why. Just amazed at how much I learned from just under 10 minutes of video. Great work!

Lyla your advice is wonderful. I've been painting on and off for a year but mostly have been putting down a base coat, then a wash, then paint the details, and finally a dry brush. I've watched many videos on painting techniques and learned the terms but have only painted 2 fantasy minis (Carrion crawler and Owlbear from D&D Army painter set). The rest is all Battletech minis. Which don't have pouches and swords or clothing so I've never used all the other techniques. After watching this video on the where and when to paint aech technique I think I can actually apply some of these to the miniatures and have it look better. Thank you very much for your advice. The hard part in painting Battletech I've found is painting a good color scheme while having it look like the mech is still made of metal. Again thank you for your Videos. I've subscribed and will watch all the rest. Love your cats, (I have a Maine Coon myself).

Thank you for this great list of techniques. Layering, edge highlighting and dry brushing have been the easiest techniques to use starting out. Getting smooth transition and finding good color combinations is the way to get to the next level. Great and helpful rundown Mini Witch!

Mine clears the table in one leap and takes a tour through my painting table, getting hair everywhere. I have to keep compressed air for blowing it off my painting table. His name is Fuzz and he came here to get fuzz everywhere. Great video, I learned a lot. Some of these techniques I learned on my own but had no idea what I was doing. I really need to learn NMM next, it's one thing I've never done.
small tip the H&S infinity has only a few advantages over the evolution, especially for advanced users, they are rather unnecessary. The evolution which is significantly cheaper and can be retrofitted with all but 2 features if required. (The optics (material) and the adjustable trigger spring load) Other differences: Material (no aluminum) a little heavier and can tarnish. the evolution has a traditional needle guard. For mixing you can use a pen cap, a tool from H&S or retrofit the cap of the infinity. It was cheaper for me to retrofit the Evolution with the quick adjustment for the needle. I was just starting out back then and didn't have a preference for trigger pull and was able to get used to the new one. Admittedly, I am also from Germany. And don't know your part availability for you. I believe that 90% of the parts are compatible even if I only know for sure about 50% of the parts. (The body and end cap, the trigger and the mechanism for creating the spring force may be incompatible.) If you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them.

I've successfully wetblended only ONCE in my lifetime :D while painting a frog of Talisman. I think i'm too slow and have to speed up a bit :) but Your tips are brilliant! Thanks!!!
My biggest fear is painting wrong and as such i usually take soo long in most areas. That and remembering what to di...blending....layeing...what will look best. I know i am my own worst enemy here because of expectations towards myself. Its videos like this that helps me remember what to do. Im not stupid just old....but NOT too old to paint. I need to learn its ok to fail. Its like left side of brain fighting with right side. Thank u for this reminder.🙂🙂 Its an intoxicating, expensive and enjoyable hobby. Just need to learn to make mistakes happy.
For wet blending larger areas, add bit of slow drying medium (liquitex has a decent stuff, if too effective). Just be careful how much you add, I added too much to thin down one of my paints... thin layer on a mini... still wet two days later... When that bottle says extra slow, they ment it.... At more normal tiny drops or brush dips of it into other paints though it works fine.
What is your go to technique? *Hey! Yes! I know my audio is less than ideal in this video. Living in an apartment sometimes means I have to remove more background noise, leading to tinny audio!
These days preshade then the glaze. But I have been working on my oil blending as well. I have handshaking from a disability that came about in my early 30's and I have had to relearn everything
These days, I'm learning wet blending, and perfecting my layering approach as well. Even though I've been at it for some time, there's always new things to learn and room for improvement, and refreshing your memory on basic stuff like this never hurts either. My attitude is that I'm only as good as my last piece was, and I try to improve with each thing I paint. I'm aiming for rougher and more textured surfaces in general for many things, a more "painterly" approach as an acquaintance of mine who is a painter put it, and really? I'm finding that approach to be more interesting than trying to get the "smoothest blends evar" as well as more challenging.
I also like that the music which plays on some of the moments with Dina and Ellie from the very start is called "It can't last". So fucking sad but also so beautifully crafted :(
Whenever I try wet blending, Im always feeling like in a rush against the clock and find myself stressing trying to get my brush rinsed out and all the paint on in time before it dries. I usually end up screwing it up or getting way more actual paint on the surface than i really wanted to.
I resumed the hobby after I had left it for years, and this video is the most useful of the ones I am watching now. THANK YOU!!! (I need to know what miniature is at 2:27. It's insane)

It really helps bring the miniatures to life! Working with texture is such an under utilized trick.

Even though I've been at it for some time, there's always new things to learn and room for improvement, and refreshing your memory on basic stuff like this never hurts either. My attitude is that I'm only as good as my last piece was, and I try to improve with each thing I paint. I'm aiming for rougher and more textured surfaces in general for many things, a more "painterly" approach as an acquaintance of mine who is a painter put it, and really? I'm finding that approach to be more interesting than trying to get the "smoothest blends evar" as well as more challenging.

Whenever I try wet blending, Im always feeling like in a rush against the clock and find myself stressing trying to get my brush rinsed out and all the paint on in time before it dries. I usually end up screwing it up or getting way more actual paint on the surface than i really wanted to.
I resumed the hobby after I had left it for years, and this video is the most useful of the ones I am watching now. THANK YOU!!!
