Lyla Mev The Mini Witch creates beginner miniature painting tutorials and easy-to-understand guides for Warhammer, dungeons & dragons, and more. My favorite things to paint are sisters of battle, display quality miniatures, and focusing on having fun.
I definitely meant to show a photo of Golden Acrylic Matte Medium! Not sure how I managed the mix up!
The one called "GOLDEN OPEN Acrylic Medium" (Matte)? The naming of the Golden products is a little confusing. There is also one called "GOLDEN Acrylic Glazing Liquid" which is a medium with retarter (but this is only Gloss and Satin).
@@andreaspaoletti141 The Open medium is formulated to work with their "open acrylics" which are somewhere between a soft and heavy body with a long working time. The medium makes them more fluid. (per golden)
Their regular matte medium comes in a jar rather than a bottle, and has "golden" where "open" is on the one you found. It comes in two varieties, a thicker gluey texture, or fluid.
@@RedFeatherReport there is Golden Liquid Matte Medium and just Matte Medium.
@@andreaspaoletti141 I commented on the smoke shading video with the same question as I was also confused about which medium Lyla is using. She says "Golden Acrylic Matte Medium" but shows the medium being added to her palette from a dropper bottle.
Golden sell a product that is just called "Matte Medium" but it only comes in a pot, the same goes for "Fluid Matte Medium" and "Super Matte Medium".
I suspect the medium being used is the "OPEN Acrylic Medium (Matte)" you mention as it comes in a dropper bottle and greatly extends the drying time, which is a feature Lyla praised it for in the smoke video, but that's just a guess! I hope we get some clarification, but I ordered some anyway. It's not like I need an excuse to buy more painting stuff to experiment with!
Here is the exact product I ordered!
Golden Open Acrylic Medium, 4 Ounce jar, Matte (3726-4)
Illustrated step-by-step how-to’s are my favorite. I appreciate the cut-always to explain the paint performance.
I never considered mixing regular and contrast paint because of the texture differences. Besides either through the airbrush or with the brush, I've only ever thought they were meant for just themselves. Thanks for showing us your experiment! This gives me something to think about
+1 for the slow-mo jelly spread
That's how I use my Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0 mostly, as glazes, and they work pretty nicely for me in that realm. Lots of good ideas and solid info as usual in this video, Miss Lyla!
Your videos are always so much fun, Lyla!
I never would have thought to touch up old models with speed pants. What a brilliant idea! Thank you! 🙂
Best intro video series on painting I’ve come across. ❤
Something I like to do to manage coffee staining is pre-wet the surface with medium before going in with your transparent paint
Doing this with full strength contrast paint and wet blending is also a great way to get nice blends fast without glazing.
Wow ... I've watched the whole video and thought this is not looking like your normal paint skill and after Matt varnish boom so beautiful 😻
I love me some contrast/speed paints. So versatile!
I love all of your videos, Lyla!
First time viewing your videos, your work is fantastic! I have learned a lot from this video!
Lots of great ideas here. I didn’t think to try contrast type paints as a glaze.
Wow. Those are great surfaces! I am definitely thinking that the model of using these sorts of paints as accents over other base colors will be the best way for me to go. Excellent demonstration.
I had seen a few painters use an airbrush for the little pink and red on the joints of orcs and goblins, but I'm intimidated by the idea of trying that for something so fine, but using thinned down contrast paints is a great idea for it.
Thanks for the advice l, I'm using contrast paint for my poxwalkers since I have 100 of them. No Exaggeration, so thinning and lighting them with light paint is crucial because I'll be dry brushing them at the end. I had a few that were so dark it lost a lot of the details. Thank you very much and I love your videos. Keep it up l, you are awesome
Thank you!
I have to ask, why paint 100 when the most you can use is 60?
I love your work 👍😁🐱
I only bought some speedpaints to test them as filters for more color variation in skintones.
Looks great!
This is perfect timing! I just got back from the hobby store, and they had a new poster up talking about all the different paint types and I learned that I'd misunderstood what contrast paints were good for. Sorry if I missed it; what's the model you were working on in red? It looks so cool!
it's from Fleshcraft studios!
Great video as always! I have not had much luck with contrast paints in the traditional use so I have been using them mostly through an air brush for shadows. I'll watch that video again and see.if I can figure out what I am doing wrong
interesting! What problem are you having?
@@LylaMev the color largely disappears on any color other than white. So if I do a zenithal highlight the color shows up on the white portion but disappears on the black portion. It doesn't look like a darker version, just black. So the transitions don't really exist and it makes the model look off. I have used them as essentially washes recently and that has worked alright when using something like newsh, but the base colors have to be there or white for it to work the way it seems to for other folks.
Was just looking at this STL
I've recently mixed a couple of the new Citadel contrast paints and medium over a white basecoat I'v painted on and around one of the red lights of an Astra Militarum vehicle turret to create OSL effect.
that sounds cool!
Mochi is such a cutie cate 🥰
blue and pink nids look familiar
I've seen contrast/speed/xpress paints used as 'super washes.'
What kind of jelly do you use? Looks a bit red/orange and more clear than I am used to seeing.
Do you use the specific medium for fabrics?
So that's what peanut and jelly looks like! I've been wondering about that my whole life. 😀 Well that and why you can't seem to buy jam in the States...
You can buy Jam, it's just more expensive than Jelly. PB&J is food to fill up kids so cost is more of a factor than taste for some families- mine growing up for example. I currently buy Bonne Maman Cherry Preserves, but growing up my parents had more kids than money for jam.
What are you using for primer? ive never seen dark blue, purple or other colors in primer like that. Usually the airbrush primers that are available are black white or grey.
This is not a criticism at all, but I couldn't tell what you were going for until after the matt varnish. The reflections from the glossy finish during the video make the model look like a bit of bloody mess, but after the matt varnish, it looked fantastic!
i've seen people thin the contrast paint down to a wash. definitely seemed more difficult than just using a wash.
But congrats paints are so vibrant!
So you showed a picture of Gac 900, but then later talk about glazing medium, are you using one or both in different circumstances?
OH CRAP. I accidentally grabbed the wrong photo! That is supposed to be golden acrylic matte medium!!
You have no idea how much paint would end up on my model if I spread it like I spread my peanut butter
Can this Technique work with dark color schemes like iron hands. I've been trying to add color into my scheme. I'm just curious what you would use if you want your final color. To read black
First of all: Great and interesting Video. Thank you.
I tried to use a Army Painter Speedpaint in an Airbrush and it clotted very fast. Almost like milk when you put lemon juice into it.
What did i do wrong?
I have no idea, I have never heard of such a thing!?
Not sure I got "feathering" yet
7:59...What is the plastic thing sticking up on the left for ???
It's a hobby holder, a painting grip! I actually talk about it in todays video!
Sorry my bad. I didnt watch the video....with all painting vids i skip to the end. My armies are painted, i wont be painting any more figs as my hobby is at an end.
Love your ''study of painting theory '' concept towards the hobby. Stunning painter as well.
Recommended white ink brand?
This Mini is gnarly. Who / what is this?
you say contrast paints. Will this also work with speed paints?
Also what matt varnish do you use?
Yes! Speed paints work just fine. I use green stuff world matte varnish!
What are these minis?
What kind of matte varnish did you use? everytime i paint on matte varnish i get a weird frosty effect maybe im not shaking it enough?
I use green stuff world!
Thank you
Where are the models from?
The red one is Skinreaper from Fleshcraft Studios. It's from the Children of Kaeron(sp?) Collection and is available to download of MMF for printing.
why do people remove the tail end of their air brush??? i see alot of top painters doing this?
I use deeeping inks by brush, i use them as main colours , insieme and glazes based on how diluted i make them
I'm boring as hell with contrast paints. The wackiest I get is typically contrast over metallics.
thats called candy painting!
now I want a peanut butter jelly sandwich
mmmmmm
I dont have enough money to wate it on GW lmao
Retarder medium or fabric medium? You posted fabric medium and im kind a confused
I definitely meant to do golden acrylic matte medium! Not sure how I managed the mix up
This isn't Mr Beast's channel, I'd click on more of your videos if you thumbnails didn't look like his :(
Having said that, awesome advice as always.
Use some gloves when using your airbrush.
OMG I'M FIRST. I'M NEVER FIRST.
😂😂😂
Congrats!
If you up your psi to about 30 when doing the white ink zenithal it should help with that speckle effect your getting
Lyla, I saw you at AdeptiCon.
Hi!
That cat squarespace website was scandalous!
