Nice Coverage Peter. Just a clarification for everyone, this hill climb competition is 300 meters & 50 degrees. They prepare for this race day since a long time (1 year) as it takes place every 1 year end of December in the middle of the desert in Liwa Oasis (Empty Quarter UAE side) Prizes are valuable (every 1st winner in each category gets a new Nissan Patrol Y61) plus a cash prize for the first three places in each category. That’s why “some” don’t run an air filter, they come to this race with spare engines, transmission, axles, driveshaft, etc just like when you go to a drag race competition everything can happen. Most cars belongs to workshops & some have sponsors. Every workshop/team have to proof himself in this competition & for UAE this race is the most popular (there is drag races, drift, 1/2mile race, etc everything comes to your mind) but sand race is different for us, people come all the way from Oman & Saudi Arabia to this event, there is also straight sand drag. N/A Category most cars run TB48 engine (Nissan Patrol inline 6) and its stroked from 4.8L up to +6.5L (by using a longer stroke crankshaft from 102mm to 130mm & up to 142mm) and running methanol fuel + big camshafts + Nitrous , etc so it makes a lot of power.
