    Comedy and horror are really hard genre's to pull off, especially if you want them to be effective, timing is key but so is originality, once the audience have seen many genre tropes and traits it's especially important not to fall into them and to be original but most importantly be effective.

    On David Duchovny’s new podcast about the power of failure, he interviews Ben Stiller and they said that the “but why male models” double-take wasn’t scripted, Ben Stiller unironically lost his place in the dialogue and repeated jt on accident but they rolled with it and it made the cut.

    I don't want to sound like a Debby Downer, but some of the movies nowadays I feel like just want to make *everything* funny and don't really care about their own stories.
    If you don't know what I mean, go watch these movies:
    *The Flash (2023)*
    *Shazam! Fury of The Gods*
    *Johnny English Strikes Again*
    Movies like these have protagonists that are really stupid, specifically "for the funny".
    I'm not saying a movie shouldn't have any jokes or humor; I'm saying that you REALLY shouldn't try to make everything funny. I feel like some film writers have a habit of trying to make a *serious* moment into a funny moment, to lighten the mood, but it just annoys the audience. Like those writers can't "read the room".

    • @StudioBinder
      @StudioBinder  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks for sharing! We agree that humor should feel as effortless as possible. When it seems too manufactured, the audience can tell.

    • @mumiemonstret
      @mumiemonstret Місяць тому

      And if the room to be read is an actual movie theatre, there is no genre more dependent on it than comedy. As a projectionist, I have lots of examples of this dependence on the audience. Jokes that can cause hysterical laughter in a crowded, excited auditorium may fall completely flat in an almost empty cinema with a less anticipating audience.
      Alas, a perfect example of the latter are press sceenings.

    I think the characters accepting the absurdity is key to comedy. The Marx Brothers shouldn't exist, or at least, no one should take them seriously. But in their movies, with all their off-the-wall chaos and bizarre appearances, everyone around them completely believes in them. I find that much funnier than the many winks and nods some contemporary actors give the audience, as if to say, "This is the funny stuff, so be sure to laugh here!"

    TL:DR my opinions on writing comedy followed by two requests for more writing lessons! Please, folks at Studio Binder, at least read that! Thank you!
    Comedy is by far the hardest genre to get right. I've written a bunch of stories (well over a hundred; most being 30,000+ words, some _much_ bigger!) in many genres, though mostly subgenres of sci-fi - it's my thing 😅! Drama, romance, fantasy, horror, crime, suspense, espionage, "adult" etc., some short one-offs, but the majority were in serials of numerous parts (in one case up to 18 parts, which covered one year. There were 4 years in that one serial!), which included pretty much all of the above genres. Sometimes, in a serial or a standalone, I have essentially unintentionally written funny stories. However, of all of the genres, I can't _decide_ that I'm going to write a comedy.
    I'll have a plot in mind, and in the serials I'll have repeating central characters which makes it easier because I rarely have to go into detail about them often. The main "actors’" characterisation usually gets done in the first or second "episode", perhaps with a few secrets to turn up later, depending on the plot. I find it easier to think in terms of TV series when writing many stories within such a serial because I have a very visual thought process, and "seeing" the characters makes it easier for me to give them believable personalities. I only need to flesh out new characters as they turn up, and then only in as much detail as required for the length of time and how they're involved.
    So my method is plot, then general characterisation, an idea of how long each story will be (a standalone short story, a novel or the above-mentioned episodes, which are like long chapters that can take between 30 mins -> an hour to read), and the (sub)genre it will mainly be in. Occasionally I'll introduce another subgenre if it works.
    It's only when I actually start writing will any comedy "appear". Sometimes it happens in the first paragraph, other times it's further in than I'd like it to be. There's rarely any concept of it being a comedic story at the start; I may decide that after a few scary or emotionally-draining episodes that I want to write something "light". If I'm lucky, the comedy just "happens"! But _deciding_ to write a comedy is worse than having a tooth pulled without anaesthetic!
    The only time deciding to do it worked had been when in the writing group I used to run, we'd take it in turns to issue challenges. E.g. a short story, approx 3,000 words, title or subject being X (often a seasonal one - a phrase or part of a saying, but also occasionally a single word), and must include the words "A, B, C, D & E". Those words may or may not have anything to do with the title, and the odd one may be bizarre! A friend once demanded the inclusion of a proctologist, though we never found out why! 😂 Another wanted a "broken cell phone", adding an air of danger to the serious story she wanted us all to write.
    Unfortunately, my very literal brain turned it into an unworking telephone in a dungeon (don't ask 🤣!) Hence my "broken cell phone!" She wasn't best pleased that I hadn't taken her challenge seriously, which I'd intended to do, but I'd just looked at the challenge, opened the word processor, and without thinking about what I was writing, about an hour later there was a fully-written and "polished" comedy. I'll go so far as to say it was funny because the few thousand non-writers on our Yahoo list (that's dating me lol) and my group said it was! I wasn't going to argue.😅
    But if I've ever set out to write a comedy, I've come to a screeching halt. It's a shame because I love making people laugh. I can make people cry without much effort. I can scare people. I'm the queen of the cliffhanger (including once leaving a character actually dangling off a cliff edge lol). I can definitely put people in a good mood, but that's far from making them laugh!
    Yet again, thank you for the hints and tips. I'm so glad you do videos concentrating on writing - I'm highly unlikely to ever write a screenplay, but I do find your explanations regarding the making of films and all of the techniques behind the scenes to be fascinating, and even though I am no longer in a group, I still enjoy writing.
    If you've reached the end of this essay (I apologize for its length!), may I ask you to do a video on whether getting an editor and/or agent is worthwhile or even essential these days, and if they are, how do we go about picking the right one for us? This is whether we hope our stories to reach the screen one day or not; maybe we'll get the nerve to try to get a novel published (I'm sure that millions of aspiring writers globally are feeling much the same way as me!).
    Another request is how best to tackle conversation within specific genres, especially romance; that has to be the genre with the most danger of going overboard, and I'm including how much "show, don't tell" plays a part in it.
    Again, thank you so much for this awesome channel!

    Majority of the western comedies are either cheesy or overdoing. Malayalam movies of '90s are the best in the world when it comes to comedies, because of their writers who have good humour sense and natural acting by fantastic actors. Here are some of my suggestions; "Nagarangalil Chennu Raparkam" (1990), "Junior Mandrake" (1997), "Vadakkunokkiyantram" (1989), "Vandanam" (1989), "Anuragakottaram" (1998),..

    Idk, I've been told throughout my life I should be a comedian. From teachers and cops, to colleagues and friends. I've told them all: "I could handle the late nights, but the coke and alcohol would have killed me."
    E.g., film in general and whatever tf Star Wars or the MCU is on Disney minus nowadays, you'd think the old rules of comedy which require wit and satire,* even insight to pull off the audience laughing no longer applies. I've found you can make really hilarious stuff just showing how inconsistent, incompetent and ignorant the creators of the films can be of their world irl and the lore of the IPs they destroy (with or without their knowledge... it's with their knowledge, spoilers).
    You're explanation proves there's no formula to effective comedy... but it does make me curious to use your specificity to see how most comedy in current films and IPs fail. All this was mostly unconscious... my comedic forte was improvisational, never failing to have something to say to break the tension, or the monotony of my or my companarios lives.
    ESG/DIE has breathed new life into comedy when socially controlled "outrage" by our intelligence agencies have come down on us all like an iron curtain, or a sniper's bullet shot from 2 different guns... not including the former President's security detail...
    You stay safe StudioBinderer's it's gonna be a hell of a year into 2025... hopefully a blue screen of death doesn't get us all next time...

    Yes, this is definitely a video about how to write, edit, and direct comedy. It really answers the question: "What makes a movie funny?"
    This feels like that time in school where you needed to summarize a history chapter and so you just copied the first line of each paragraph and hoped that the teacher never noticed (not that I ever did that).
    Each of the ideas brought forth here should be expanded upon to really dive in and explain. Just glossing over and giving a ton of examples can only help so much.

    What about writing comedies in animation? Nickelodeon is best known for writing exaggerated punchlines in kids shows. The Loud House is a good example.
