I love the first novel, its a fun read, but the cheese is real. I just love the real world mythology references that are a staple of SMT now, it's cool to see the origins of everything. But that's it, if it wasnt for the whole SMT history after it, it would be a pretty disposable shitty novel.
It's definitely schlocky and really not very good (then again you can only read it in fan-translations, so I suppose that could affect the quality of the writing). But like you said it's a fun read. For all its shortcomings it's full of raw enthusiasm from a young, inexperienced writer (at the time). Aya Nishitani teaches creative writing nowadays and has apparently honed his skills considerably since DDS, but I don't think any of his work has been officially translated.
Going from Kyuuyaku to SMT1 was a rude wake up call in a sense that item descriptions in SMT1 are nonexistent. partially the reason why I like KMT2 more than SMT1.
Baldur's Gate 2 has vampires that will level drain you, however, this is only temporary and can be healed with a restoration or a greater restoration spell.
One thing to note is defending is actually kinda useful (in the few situations you will ever need to). It actually does help you take a big hit, like the final boss' attacks, and survive it. In most JRPGs I really never use the "defend" option. Overall, I like this series of "blobbers" way more than Wizardry. Its like Wizardry IV but actually somewhat balanced.
well, i came to this channel because it had the highest quality drakengard play through i could find. might as well stay to see where shin megami tensei started out.
I know this is a few years after you posted this, but the tower of Deadalus may not be real itself, but it is based off of something. Deadalus was the father of Icarus and also creator of the maze that imprissoned the Minotaur, so it is actually named extremity well.
The correct pronunciation of Charon is "Caron" - it's from ancient Greek: Χάρων, Chárōn - you don't "read" the H as in English, it's as if it wasn't there at all. Cool to see another SMT let's play, I got the game myself but didn't know there was an unofficial translation...
A perfect way of entering the series!! Just started my foray into the megami tensei series as i just got the newest game in the series. Love it so far and this lp is the perfect way of getting some backstory.
Hell yeah, I too never cared about my party being on different levels because someone died. Shit happens and it's funny when the lead isn't the strongest character.
Nakajima and Yumiko are the reincarnations of Izanagi and Izanami :D They gave birth to many gods and the Islands of Japan. When you watch the OVA you can see Nakajima in his past life, having followed Yumiko to the land of darkness, he left her there when he found her rotting. That's why Nakajima keeps having flashbacks of his past life, fleeing a rotting woman and she is asking why he left her.
As far as I know - yup, mixture of both, books were nice and the story was alluring in times of very rapid development of computers, Digital Devil Story series was, what he considered as a japanese, kinda clumsily written. Well, the author gained popularity on them ans gained more skill a bit later.
By the way, I love how much lore this game has spawned over the series. In example, in SMT Devil Survivor, the guy who always bids harder during the auctions is Nakajima! :)
I love how cheery the "town" and dungeon themes are so far. Completely not what I expect from a MegaTen game. I usually just ask around to figure out what level people tend to be at the end of an RPG if I want an estimation of progress.
This comment made me curious myself so I looked it up - Apparently someone ripped it and made a version of it called "Megaten 20XX" that you can find on dafont.com.
Ah, unfortunately I think this fan-made one is the closest you're going to get. Sadly because the game played in the video was fan-translated, I don't think this is a common SNES font that could be easily found or anything, it might have only been used in this project and never again. Good luck searching though!
_People were like "yo, fuck the last supper, we could be having more fun right now" and they just threw the first breakfast or some shit._ That killed me.
Also in my opinion what is maybe almost equally as worst as or maybe worse then Level Stealing Enemy is an Enemy that can Damage a Stat that will Cripple your Character Severely. A very easy example of that is Morrowind, and Morrowind has some Enemies that will Damage your Strength Stat pretty much lowering your Physical Damage and mostly important your Carry Weight. And since it's before the time where you can just walk slowly in Fallout 3 and Skyrim. You are forced to either reload the Save or Drop Everything to go Town it has a Special Imperial Healing Altar to Cure the Semi-Permanent Damage on your Stat I know a few Enemies that can Damage your Strength is a Greater Bonewalker, The Final Boss Dagoth Ur and a very Nasty Glitch. The very Nasty Glitch is if someone or something uses the cousin of Damage Strength Drain Strength, that Drain Strength Temporarily Damage your Stat in a Time. If Drain anything of Attributes hit you when you're wearing any Equipment that has an Enchantment of Fortify Attribute. It will annoyingly act as Damage Attribute instead of Drain Attribute. I would say it's really preferable for me that I rather have some levels drain that I can easily game back by killing a few Bandits or Bad Monsters then to get hit by something that might cause you have a Dead Game Theoretically if you don't have the patience to drop everything if you don't use saves often enough.
People already want me to do SMT 2 and after this they're going to want me to do KMT 2, so if... Isn't a priority for me at the moment. I also played it with a translation guide when it was still in Japanese and there's a few aspects of the game that I'm... not the biggest fan of, to be frank. Not something I'd be against LPing, but it's a long ways off if so.
At 10:16 when you were on the the boat in river styx and saying"going back" a midroll advert played and it transitioned into it perfectly but it was an ad for Federation of American Immigration Reform. WTF youtube why is this shit propoganda being advertised here. Its both halarious how smoothly the ads transitioned but also kinda gross youtube is putting these ads on your videos. Great vid though, Im excited to watch more of this series.
My opinion how you pronounce Charon but one thing it's not a hundred Percent-Lee accurate, but what I feel maybe it's the right way to pronounce Charon. Chair-Rin is the way I say Charon. I wonder how everyone else thinks it's Pronounced?
The novels are for youbg adults and were not good. The idea of summoning demons from a computer is cool but the first novel for instance was borderline hentai and a very simple story.
i'm never going to get over when my characters die and then lag in levels though i'm not against "only living chars get exp" it makes a good punishment esp. for perfectionist fucks like myself (i like it best when combined with party divided exp which i used to dislike but now i'm fine with)

Only thing I can say is "Good luck" the magnetite mechanic in this one is brutal.
Him: "Everybody Wins"
Me(thinking) Cept for the Gnomes.
Him: "Except for the Gnomes"
Me: I'm going to like this.
Going from Kyuuyaku to SMT1 was a rude wake up call in a sense that item descriptions in SMT1 are nonexistent. partially the reason why I like KMT2 more than SMT1.
Yeah. Kinda funny how the remakes of the first two games are much better than 1, 2 and if... In some ways.
Baldur's Gate 2 has vampires that will level drain you, however, this is only temporary and can be healed with a restoration or a greater restoration spell.
Wow, HP starts REALLY low in this game
Gotta love that refugee component in old school rpgs.
100 percent agree about the non-fixed map. Bonkers!

2:28 It looks like an Aztec Temple but maybe is based on some old place from Japan since it's suppose to be Izanami grave.
Play a REEL SHEEN MEGOOMI TENSAY game.

the Ch in Charon is like the Ch in chaos. Unless you're talking modern greek then its like saying Haron.
That mound/temple definitely has some similarities to Chichen Itza or even the Tikal in my opinion.
A perfect way of entering the series!! Just started my foray into the megami tensei series as i just got the newest game in the series. Love it so far and this lp is the perfect way of getting some backstory.
Good to see more SMT! Always a delight
Hell yeah, I too never cared about my party being on different levels because someone died. Shit happens and it's funny when the lead isn't the strongest character.
Lol, in Persona 1 my protagonist was a support-kinda ironic
I have finals next week, but fuck it , NEW RASEN MEGAMI TENSEI LP.

I loved your SMT1 playthrough, here's to a SMT2 one someday!
I think I remember him saying he wanted to hold off until he was more familiar with the game.

@@markyjoe1990 Sup, Marc.
I Finished This game Yesterday 10/10
This is awesome! Happy New Years!
Holy shit someone actually translated the novels? I couldn't find shit on the novels anywhere but I'm defo reading this. Dont care if its bad
You needed to edit in an airhorn to punctuate that sweet fire you were spitting at the start, fam
7:07 I feel your pain, I was terrified of escalators when I was a kid.
I call Charon "Chair-run"
another thing luck does is that it is part of spell learning formula but to way lesser degree than INT

Actually, I think Charron is pronounced like ‘karon’.
Yeah. "Karon" or "Karen" lol - in SMT IV the voice actor says it out loud

I thought it was Shin Megumi Tensei 😉
Digital Devil Story is Shin Megami Tensei is The first game of the series
lol "Megumi"
The Daedalus Tower attached to the Daimakyuu? Other than being drawn to resemble South American pyramids, no, it's not based on anything

In FF5 you cant have the party at the same level becuse of the level 5 death spells
