The Hollywood Palace. Such a fun show. Love Jimmy Durante! On tv, movies, and radio. Used to sneak out of bed to watch his show. Love George Carlin, and The Turtles. By the way: the Dutch Master who was singing bass, 2nd from right front, was Thurl Ravenscroft, the singing voice of the Grinch, and the voice of Tony the Tiger. He's GRRREAT! RIP, darling Jimmy, and George, and Thurl, and thanx so very much, dear gentle men, for the magic, music, and memories.
...most likely I watched this with mom & dad on that Saturday night in 1966 when I was 16...I'm a month away from 74...that was FIFTY EIGHT years ago!!!
I am telling everyone l know (who isn't a dyed in the wool millennial enthralled with current stuff) about these wonderful posts. These have been an early Christmas gift for me. Thanks again.
I FOUND THE HOLLYWOOD PALACE SHOWS AND THE KING FAMILY SHOWS AND LOVE WATCHING THEM. BY THE WAY LOOK FOR THE HOLLYWOOD PALACE SHOWS WITH JUDY GARLAND AS HOST YOU WILL LOVE THEM AS THEY PUT A LUMP IN YOUR THROAT.
Tobacco ads were all over the place on television back then. Didn't have anything to do with my nicotine habit which I picked up in the army back when they had free mini-packs of cigarettes in the C-rations. I wish they'd ban all the political ads and bring back the tobacco ads. What sort of an idiot would vote for or against somebody based on a two minute television ad?
Mrs. Miller later to be in Merv Griffin,s audience every show, was one of a kind and someone like Jimmy Durante was just the person to make her even a bigger standout.check out her singing on the youtube video singing Lets Hang On on Malibu U,the color version not the b/w one.
The Mrs. Miller (Lillian) who attended Merv Griffin's shows wasn't the same Mrs. Miller who sang. Her name was Elva Miller. By the way, Walt Disney died five days after this episode of "The Hollywood Palace" aired. I remember it like it was yesterday!
Also interesting that Lawford is singing a song he WOULD have sung in ROBIN AND THE 7 HOODS if he hadn't gotten kicked out of the film and replaced by Crosby.
That's the same air date and episode number that I've already noted in the video title and description, so I'm not clear why you're noting it again here. But thanks for the heads up about the Mrs. Miller appearance! :)
@@hollywoodpalace3308 I think it is confusing to a lot of people when your videos are titled "Hollywood Palace 4-12," and not "Hollywood Palace 12-10-66."
I love this show overall, but now, knowing the abuse they heaped on these poor elephants to "train" them, I had to fast-forward through that part. And I'm sure they never "forgot" that torture--which is why they "performed" so well.
Paul I dont know about a joke on Mrs.Miller but she cashed in big time .She was managed by Mort Jacobs at William Morris Agency a big time agenr who even got her paid for being in Merv Griffins audience or so it looked like as it was all staged. Mrs.Miller was so in demand the short lived music show out of UCLA hosted by Rick Nelson on the Summer got more requests to have her than they did for The Doors.. Check out the Golden Throats cd if you can get them with Mrs.Miller. Its a time gone by that will never happen again.I wish I had been born then.
Can't say this stuff makes me proud! Live animal circus, cigarette ads, sexism. It's got it all! In fact I had to FF over the circus bit. Those poor animals! In fact, had to FF over the Turtles as well. Try the Bing Crosby ep 4.01. It's a bit less cringeworthy.
Its was back when people had social integrity and were confident in their own social standing, unafraid of what others said or thought. Women were confident in their womanhood and men confident in their manhood. The sick social beggars of today are sad in comparison.
The Hollywood Palace. My time machine to the era of entertainment excellence.

Durante
Was a real showman

Durante was one of a kind never duplicated
You might remember Jimmy Durante in the 1969 Rankin Bass Christmas special: Frosty the snowman.
@@andrewscungio3200 I was a young boy on the floor watching TV when Durante was in his hey day.
Thank You!! The Turtles: "Can I Get To Know You Better" 12:00 - George Carlin (comedian): spoofs rock 'n' roll DJs 16:49
Those beautiful incredible elephants!
The elephants were presented by buckles and Barbara woodcock! Sadly Barbara Woodcock has just recently passed away and will be missed by all
That cigar add was truly great!

Good one!
Jimmy Durante was 72. Could have fooled me!
IN his era 72 was an old, old, man. God Bless him.
The Turtles are still going strong 50 years later too.
How many can claim to have worked with both Frank Zappa and T.Rex?

I was hoping you would have this one. Great episode!
One room home, great!

mvp822 I wonder if Mrs. Miller was in on the joke...
Also interesting that Lawford is singing a song he WOULD have sung in ROBIN AND THE 7 HOODS if he hadn't gotten kicked out of the film and replaced by Crosby.
Yeah, a sad irony.
George Carlin this is way before Thomas and friends
I remember when Carlin did wino on am fm album he did
He was a disc jockey before getting into stand up comedy...
Mrs. Miller did spoofs of big 60's hits like Downtown!
Saturday night live used her material 20 years later.
She didn't spoof them...she just performed them in a voice described as "like cockroaches rattling around a garbage can"
MRS.MILLER WAS ONE IF THOSE INIGMAS THAT ONLY COME ONCE IN A LIFETIME. HER AND JIMMY DURANTE WERE MEANT TO BE AN ACT.
MRS. MILLER AT 29:14

So Pall Mall is pronounced Pel Mel? Who knew? I wonder if they still even make them anymore.
They do - and I smoke them!
Mrs. Miller reminds me SO much of Margaret Dumont here.
I love the mistakes. It's real, not scripted laughter. Durante was in his 70's and the eye sight needed assistance .
it was part of the act
Nah - Durante was famous for his malaprops and mispronunciations.
Oliver Wendall Douglas for Polaroid...
You remember Green Acres too.
Yes, where's Lisa and Eb and Arnold Ziffel and old Mr. Haney? And Sam Drucker?

Don't tell Flo & Eddie that their song is playing here, they'll have this episode pulled!

A showcase for really bad vaudeville.
