  • The Runaway Horse (French: Le Cheval emballé ) is a comedy film directed by • Louis J. Gasnier , was produced by Pathé Frères in 1908.
This film by Louis J. Gasnier is one of the earliest and clearest examples of *intercutting*, this editing technique consists of alternating shots of two or more scenes to express the contemporaneity of the actions; in the opening sequence of this film we see, in fact, an alternation of shots of the scene in the street, with the horse eating, with those of the scene of the bellboy carrying out his errand inside the building.
Synopsis . (0:07) A bellboy stops his cart in front of a palace gate and enters it to make a delivery (0:35). But his horse, left unattended, approaches sacks of oats displayed in front of a store and begins to eat undisturbed (0:42).
On the way back (2:10) the delivery man notices how much oats his horse has eaten from the animal's swollen belly and sets off in a hurry so as not to have to pay the bill, but the shopkeeper notices (2:33) and begins the chase.
(2:39) Full of energy from the lavish meal, the horse sets off on a mad dash through the town, causing all sorts of damage and being chased by an ever-growing crowd.
At one point (3:58), he even starts running backwards!
(5:57) Finally exhausted, the horse returns alone to the stable and its owner disperses the pursuers by watering them profusely (6:54).
