  • Adventures of Dollie is the very first film directed by the American silent film director, • David Wark Griffith The film was produced and released during the same year by the American Mutoscope & Biograph Company in 1908. The screenplay for the film was written by Stanner E.V. Taylor and it tells the story of a little girl, Dollie, who is kidnapped by a couple of gypsies. She is saved when the barrel she is trapped in falls off a wagon and into the river. The barrel floats downstream amongst dangerous currents, heading towards a waterfall. However, Dollie is found in time by a young boy who is fishing nearby, reuniting her with her parents. From then on, Stanner Taylor will become the screenwriter of many other Griffith films. Billy Bitzer also worked with Griffith on this film and assists him in directing. Billy Bitzer will become the cinematographer on all of Griffith's subsequent films, including Griffith’s well-known masterpieces: • Video

    this work is known as the watershed from the cinema of attractions or cinema like circus (primarily George Melies) to the cinema the one we know, that modern (started by the great George Albert Smith whose works unfortunately were limited to only a few minutes, too short to create an exciting story)

      this is not true, untill 1912, french and italian movies were most modern and creative. Only with Griffith and the First World World american cinema become the first in the world

      Lumière invented cinema, Méliès invented special effects and showed how cinema could tell stories. English filmmakers invented the first narrative editing techniques, which Porter and Griffith copied, as they copied Méliès's special effects. The Italians specialized in the production of feature films, epic films with large sets and rich costumes that were sold all over the world. Until 1912, because of the patent war unleashed by Edison, it was not possible to produce feature films in the U.S. like the Italians or the French. Only when this issue was resolved could Griffith make his great masterpieces and go beyond what he had learned from the Europeans. The cinema of origins ended, classical cinema began. But meanwhile, war had broken out in Europe....

      @@iconaus Meliès invented special effects, Brighton School invented the narrative techniques, fine with that, but Porter with train robbbery almost invented the narrative cinema, so the way to the classic cinema..the first film to show real narrative plot, letting alone "china mission", was the great train robbery, after that, another step was Griffith's "the adventure of dollie". Im only saying that when it comes to the classic cinema americans were the best from the beginning, i mean 1903, even without doing "feature films". I could say that they invented the cinema we know today. For me narrative cinema is the best form of cinema.

    To think that this is the man who would eventually make the VERY racist and bigoted film "Birth of a Nation"
    Nonetheless, a revolutionary filmmaker of his time, no doubt about it
    I mean, the racist views already start here, considering the sinti and roma (gypsies) are portrayed as the villains

    • @jelirestri
      @jelirestri 5 місяців тому

      I agree. You can say the same things about both films. Griffith is a talented artist and most scenes are strikingly beautiful. But his stories are full of an unnerving 'casual' racism. There's an element of cruelty in this insouncience.
