Sadly, tin ears and tasteless people have been with humanity since we broke from the chimps - today, they infect the world of beauty. The way to deal with their lack is to simply enjoy beauty even more. That's the best revenge.
Great song. My sister used to work for the Landesmans at the Crystal Palace in Gaslight Square, St. Louis. I got to see them and their milieu, with my own eyes. The title of this song was inspired by the line "April is the cruelest month."
Ella and my mother met in Portland in the very early 1940's. She stayed at our home and stayed up till midnight with Mom playing piano and Ella singing. She was a very sweet lady.
Thus far, Ella and Carmen McRae are the only vocalists I've heard sing all the verses which takes 6 minutes to do so. After the first ending the tune starts all over with new lyrics which makes the song twice as long. Listen to other vocalists and see what they left out. I love this song, and as a lyricist and Jazz musician I want to hear the all the poetic verses. The only other song I know like this that has 'double lyrics' is "Old Folks" which was a Jazz standard at one time. Hear instrumental versions by Charlie Parker with a vocal section and later Miles Davis on "Someday My Prince Will Come' album.
Thanks for your note, Rene Pineda -- informed, informative -- and a joy to read. Is this her decades-long accompanist Paul T. Smith on piano? And since you're so smart, who is filling out the trio? Terrific support for Ella on the least-known standard about Spring. Tchreptdh below included a question (I think he's right) "Correct me if I'm wrong, but the great Herb Ellis is on guitar I do believe"
Exquisite! Fran Landesman said she got the idea for the title listening to jazz guys chatting and wondering how they might phrase great lines of poetry. So The opening line of TS Eliot's The Wasteland "April is the cruelest month" became "Spring can really hang you up the most"
Exactly! Just read about that is a great book by Ted Gioia, titled Jazz Standards. That book is full of anecdotes and insights about the great songs of the jazz repertoire.
Fran and Jay Landesman were one block up the street from where I grew up & are related to me. This is first time I really gave the song a listen. Thanks Dewey.
Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most - Ella Fitzgerald
Lyrics Once I was a sentimental thing, Threw my heart away each spring; Now a spring romance hasn't got a chance Promised my first dance to winter; All I've got to show's a splinter for my little fling! Spring this year has got me feeling like a horse that never left the post; I lie in my room staring up at the ceiling, Spring can really hang you up the most! Morning's kiss wakes trees and flowers, And to them I'd like to drink a toast; I walk in the park just to kill lonely hours, Spring can really hang you up the most. All afternoon those birds twitter twit, I know the tune, "This is love, this is it!" Heard it before and I know the score, And I've decided that spring is a bore! Love seemed sure around the new year, Now it's April, love is just a ghost; Spring arrived on time, only what became of you, dear? Spring can really hang you up the most! Spring is here, there's no mistaking Robins building nests from coast to coast; My heart tries to sing so they won't hear it breaking, Spring can really hang you up the most! College boys are writing sonnets, In the tender passion they're engrossed; But I'm on the shelf with last years Easter bonnets, Spring can really hang you up the most! Love came my way, I hope it would last; We had our day, now that's all in the past! Spring came along a season of son, Full of sweet promise but something went wrong! Doctors once prescribed a tonic, "Sulphur and molasses" was the dose; Didn't help a bit, my condition must be chronic, Spring can really hang you up the most! All alone, the party's over, Old man winter was a gracious host; But when you keep praying for snow to hide the clover Spring can really hang you up the most! Did you hear it? (Copy-reading by Richard Chung Sohn)
Its difficult for me to choose between Ella and Sarah, but I think this just edges it as my favourite rendition of this song. Such beautiful phrasing and tonal colour, and the lyrics are first class. A jewel from the golden age of American popular song.

Great example of the magic that happens with the combination of a great song and great singer.
Ella's voice is a full orchestra
Hello 👋 vlera
How are you doing today
What I would give for someone to come along and just sing like Ella. Because the world needs more Ella!
Today's people don't deserve an Ella.
techreptdh There will never be another Ella Fitzgerald.
tdeecy Yes they do.
the hero we need, but dont deserve.
Cecil McClorin Salvant is a beautiful solution...certainty Ella is Ella...
I don't know of anyone who can sing this great song as well as Ella. Mark Murphy does it well but Ella really lives it.
When the world gets you down, listen to Ella.
I cannot imagine anyone giving this perfect gem a thumbs down. This is beauty manifest in song. Divine!
Sadly, tin ears and tasteless people have been with humanity since we broke from the chimps - today, they infect the world of beauty. The way to deal with their lack is to simply enjoy beauty even more. That's the best revenge.

ONE OF THE TOP RENDITIONS OF THIS GEM OF A COMPOSITION....YEAH, ELLA!!!
Ella is the best of the best. Her version of this song is devastating. What a voice! And I'm a singer myself.
Lol...
This may be the most perfect song/performance ever. Woke up this morning with this in my head.
Ella and my mother met in Portland in the very early 1940's. She stayed at our home and stayed up till midnight with Mom playing piano and Ella singing. She was a very sweet lady.

Happy 100th Birthday to the First Lady of Song.
There are no words for ELLA and this song. What a voice!
Exquisite!
Fran Landesman said she got the idea for the title listening to jazz guys chatting and wondering how they might phrase great lines of poetry.

Exactly! Just read about that is a great book by Ted Gioia, titled Jazz Standards. That book is full of anecdotes and insights about the great songs of the jazz repertoire.
a voice so beautiful its heartbreaking.......
Her voice can give you chills and make you tear up. Her enunciation is legendary. She treats each lyric as a thing of love.
Frighteningly beautiful!!!!
That's exactly my word for it. The great ones will break your heart with their talent, and Ella always does.
Wow !!
Beautiful Voice, straight from her beautiful soul. What a great lady!
RIP Fran Landesman and thank you for creating these beautiful lyrics. We are all richer for your gift to us, your admiring listening public.
Fran and Jay Landesman were one block up the street from where I grew up & are related to me. This is first time I really gave the song a listen. Thanks Dewey.
Ella is timeless, she will be listened and appreciated forever.
Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most - Ella Fitzgerald
Lyrics
Once I was a sentimental thing,
Threw my heart away each spring;
Now a spring romance hasn't got a chance
Promised my first dance to winter;
All I've got to show's a splinter for my little fling!
Spring this year has got me feeling
like a horse that never left the post;
I lie in my room staring up at the ceiling,
Spring can really hang you up the most!
Morning's kiss wakes trees and flowers,
And to them I'd like to drink a toast;
I walk in the park just to kill lonely hours,
Spring can really hang you up the most.
All afternoon those birds twitter twit,
I know the tune, "This is love, this is it!"
Heard it before and I know the score,
And I've decided that spring is a bore!
Love seemed sure around the new year,
Now it's April, love is just a ghost;
Spring arrived on time, only what became of you, dear?
Spring can really hang you up the most!
Spring is here, there's no mistaking
Robins building nests from coast to coast;
My heart tries to sing so they won't hear it breaking,
Spring can really hang you up the most!
College boys are writing sonnets,
In the tender passion they're engrossed;
But I'm on the shelf with last years Easter bonnets,
Spring can really hang you up the most!
Love came my way, I hope it would last;
We had our day, now that's all in the past!
Spring came along a season of son,
Full of sweet promise but something went wrong!
Doctors once prescribed a tonic,
"Sulphur and molasses" was the dose;
Didn't help a bit, my condition must be chronic,
Spring can really hang you up the most!
All alone, the party's over,
Old man winter was a gracious host;
But when you keep praying for snow to hide the clover
Spring can really hang you up the most!
Did you hear it?

The best rendition ever.
Hello 👋 carolyn
How are you doing today
One of my favorite songs sung by one of my favorite singers--the first lady of song--Miss Ella Fitzgerald.
Its difficult for me to choose between Ella and Sarah, but I think this just edges it as my favourite rendition of this song. Such beautiful phrasing and tonal colour, and the lyrics are first class. A jewel from the golden age of American popular song.
I grew up on this recording. Absolutely stunning.
Lyrics
Once I was a sentimental thing
Throw my heart away each Spring
Now a Spring romance
Hasn't got a chance
Promised my first dance to Winter
All I've got to show's a splinter
For my little fling
Spring, this year has got me feeling like a horse
That never left the post
I lay in my room
Starring up at the ceiling
Spring can really hang you up the most
Morning kiss wakes trees and flower
And to them my life
To drink a toast I walk in the park
Just to kill those lonely hours
Spring can really hang you up the most
All afternoon
Those birds tweet-a-tweet I know their tune
This is love this is it
Heard it
before
And I know the score
And I decide that love is a bore
Love seem sure around the new year
Now it's April
Love is just a ghost
Spring arrived on time
But what became of you, dear
Spring can really hang you up the most
Spring can really hang you up the most
Spring is here
There's no mistaken
Robins build their nest from coast to coast
My heart tries the same
So they won't hear it breaking
Spring can really hang you up the most
College boys are riding somewhere
... tender passion there it grows
But I'm on the shelf with last years easter bonnet
Spring can really hang you up the most
Love came my way
I'm holding the last
We had our day
Now that's all in the past
Spring came along
A season of song
For love's sweet promise
But something went wrong
Doctor's once prescribed a tonic
Sulfur and molasses was the dose
Didn't help me a bit
My condition must be chronic
Spring can really hang you up the most
All alone, the party's over
Winter was a gracious host
But when you keep praying
For snow to hide the clover
Spring can really hang you up the most
Thank you
Once I was a sentimental thing
THREW my heart away each Spring
Now a Spring romance
Hasn't got a chance
Promised my first dance to Winter
All I've got to show's a splinter
For my little fling
Spring, this year has got me feeling
like a horse that never left the post
I LIE in my room
Staring up at the ceiling
Spring can really hang you up the most
Morning'S kiss wakes trees and flowers
And to them I'D LIKE To drink a toast
I walk in the park
Just to kill lonely hours
Spring can really hang you up the most
All afternoon
Those birds TWITTER TWIT
I know THE tune
This is love this is it
Heard it before
And I know the score
And I'VE DECIDED THAT SPRING is a bore
Love seemED sure around the new year
Now it's April
Love is just a ghost
Spring arrived on time
ONLY what became of you, dear
Spring can really hang you up the most
Spring is here
There's no MISTAKING
Robins BUILDING NESTS from coast to coast
My heart tries TO SING
So they won't hear it breaking
Spring can really hang you up the most
College boys are WRITING SONNETS
IN THEIR TENDER PASSION THEY'RE ENGROSSED
But I'm on the shelf
with last years easter bonnetS
Spring can really hang you up the most
Love came my way
I HOPED IT WOULD LAST
We had our day
Now that's all in the past
Spring came along
A season of song
FULL OF sweet promise
But something went wrong
Doctors once prescribed a tonic
Sulfur and molasses was the dose
Didn't help a bit
My condition must be chronic
Spring can really hang you up the most
All alone, the party's over
OLD MAN Winter was a gracious host
But when you keep praying
For snow to hide the clover
Spring can really hang you up the most
Exceptional song, and exceptional vocalist! Love Ella....
Perfection in sound: the voice, the words the melody
the slideshow was appreciated, too
effortless brilliance, magical , genius

Tony Partridge.
Thanks for posting. Brilliant. Superb lyric and arrangement. Better even than Sarah Vaughan's version.
Wonderful woman, incredible voice, could listen to her forever. Many thanks Anna
In my big band, we are playing the Frank Mantooth arrangement with a lead trombone soloing the vocal transcription. Amazing song!
We’re playing the kris berg arrangement and I’ve got the bone solo. I got to try making it sound like her.
What could be better? Ella in her element singing a ballad.
my dearest friend wrote the lyrics, what a song, no wonder the best people record it!
Yes. Resonates...and more, the older I get. Thanks.
One of my favorite songs ever.
Touches me in ways that others don't. I love this lady.
So many beautiful songs, this is one of my top five faves of hers.
Heartbreakingly beautiful, lyrics, voice, and arrangement.
Here From Treme. Love the show and the music it introduced to me. Without the show would’t heard this Gem.
Love it! Will add to my repertoire.
Here's Ella singing "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most." (A brief view of Spongebob?! ...an elf?!)
The definative version. Thank you Queen Ella.
Ella's angel voice is sweet no matter what the lyrics
The Best.
My favorite female singer, by far! :-* Thank you, Ella!
People always mention her scatting, but her balladry is really where she is at her best. What a voice.

Perfect version by the perfect Ella.
Incredible song, and wonderful interpretation. Whew!
A masterpiece.
I thought I read this was written originally for Barbra Streisand. Gorgeous song! Brings me to tears every time.
lily patterson this was sung at my sr prom in 1957.
I don't think so. The song was written in 1955. In that year Barbara Streisand was 13 years old.
@@jaysonbiggs8979 Make no mistake, Babs could have pulled this off at 13.
I'm playing this piece this year in my high school jazz band
Master Class.
One of the great songs.... Ella is perfection.
Fabulous song and fabulous Ella!
One of the greatest singers of the American song.
Brilliant lyricist brilliant poet we are poorer for her passing.

Her voice is like a perfect bell, ringing.
If only I could sing like this!
Incredible! A privilege to listen to
my fav song of this style! I turn to Ella for purity and perfection... But for emotion on this song I think Bet Midler's version is riveting! I did a version of it ha ha got a ways to go It's full of Intervals and hard to get it right but something to work towards as a singer :) Love my Ella!
Love this ballad
Fan effing-tastic Thanks for posting
She was so ahead of her time....fantastic! we miss you!
Fake compliment alert! How was she "ahead of her time"? That was a rhetorical question. Nobody's ahead of his time. The concept is nonsensical. You were just trying to sound deep, Mr. Shallow.
happy 100th birthday Ms Ella
Really exceptional song !!!!
Very beautiful, Ella!!!

First time around, the line
"what became of you dear,"
is Em7 / Am7 / D7 /D7b5
followed by
"Spring can really hang you up the most,"
Dm7 / G7
Second time round
"My condition must be chronic,"
is Ebm7 / A7 / Ab7
followed by
"Spring can really hang you up the most."
Dm7 / G7
That track was on for a few years, one of my favourite Fran Landsman and Tommy Wolf songs.
I also uploaded another of theirs, "Ballad of the Sad Young Men," from a Keith Jarrett CD of mine, that too after a few years got taken down.

Lady Ella
All those years when she was on Steve Allen and Ed Sullivan shows I did not appreciate her enough.
Godess!!
