Fun fact: CRY ME A RIVER was originally written for a movie called Pete Kelly's Blues, where it was to be sung by Ella Fitzgerald (originally sang by). However the producers of the movie objected to the line "told me love was too plebian", saying that a black woman wouldn't use a word like 'plebeian". The songwriter refused to change the lyrics, so they dropped the song. A year or two later, the song was used in another movie, The Girl Can't Help It", where it was sung by Julie London. It was the only Number One hit she ever had.
I loved this song when I first heard it in the 1960s, and still love it to this day. And Julie London has always been one of my favorite beauties in music and TV.
This always sets a mood memory of my sitting in the lounge bar at the Desert Inn Vegas. 4:00 in the morning across from Frank Sinatra.. Drinking, smoking, thinking..
About fifty and change years ago I served in the Air Force. My buddy was the base DJ, signing off nightly at 2300 hours, always with the same song ... you got it! The memories come rushing back. Thank you Miss London, you always had a place in my heart.
she was singing about my so-called sex life with guys that screwed every female they could see...yes baby...it really happened to me. I caught him in her at his job.
2019... I'm still listening to this amazing sultry voice. Proof that you don't have to warble and scream your head off to come across as a beautiful singer.
This takes me back to when I was a postgrad PhD physics student when the Russian exhibition came to London in the 1960s and we had the Pugwash conference between US, UK and Russian (Soviet) Physicists in London (University College) to discuss reducing the need for nuclear weapons; one of the rare occasions bringing scientists together across the barriers of the 'Cold War"
In my head, V survives. He goes back to Evey but she's obviously pissed because she's been hurt and has already mourned losing him. "No more lies, you said. Yet you lied about dying, too!" So she shuts him off even though he tries to explain. V eventually comes home to the Shadow Gallery and plays a song in the Jukebox to distract himself. He doesn't look, and just presses a button. It plays this song, as if spitting out the unspoken bitter words of Evey. He doesn't believe in coincidences-- never had. So, determined not to give up, he does what he is best at doing. He plans of ways he can win her back, poring over strategically manipulating events that will bring them together (a broken elevator at her work, maybe? And-- oh, hello Evey! Fancy seeing you here. I was also about to attend a gathering here that absolutely no one has invited me to. How have you been doing?), and rehearsing the words he would say. He thought of using lines from books, but knows that being vague about his point may probably anger her more. It is in the middle of this that she catches him, coming to a stop at the entrance of the living room and staring at him as he is apologizing to his "fat metal friend". He notices her not too long after and wishes for the train's existence, hoping for it to hit him and take him away from this embarrassing predicament. "I heard all of that." She simply states while trying to maintain a straight face. She fails, the upward tilt of the corners of her mouth being a dead give-away, and V feels like now he REALLY wants to die. "Why don't we have some tea?" She commands more than suggests. All he could do was to follow her to his kitchen and set the kettle to boil while thinking with nervous apprehension that this is going to be a long night.

I’ve heard this song sampled in a beat for years and I’ve loved it (actually, it’s my favorite Lofi song of all time called Astral Convex). My friend just played me this original song tonight and I was so happy to finally hear the original!
Here is what he says: Good evening, London. Allow me first to apologize for this interruption. I do, like many of you, appreciate the comforts of every day routine- the security of the familiar, the tranquility of repetition. I enjoy them as much as any bloke. But in the spirit of commemoration, thereby those important events of the past usually associated with someone's death or the end of some awful bloody struggle, a celebration of a nice holiday, I thought we could mark this November the 5th, a day that is sadly no longer remembered, by taking some time out of our daily lives to sit down and have a little chat. There are of course those who do not want us to speak. I suspect even now, orders are being shouted into telephones, and men with guns will soon be on their way. Why? Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor, Adam Sutler. He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent. Last night I sought to end that silence. Last night I destroyed the Old Bailey, to remind this country of what it has forgotten. More than four hundred years ago a great citizen wished to embed the fifth of November forever in our memory. His hope was to remind the world that fairness, justice, and freedom are more than words, they are perspectives. So if you've seen nothing, if the crimes of this government remain unknown to you then I would suggest you allow the fifth of November to pass unmarked. But if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as I seek, then I ask you to stand beside me one year from tonight, outside the gates of Parliament, and together we shall give them a fifth of November that shall never, ever be forgot The film itself centers around Eve (Natalie Portman) and the British terrorist V (Hugo Weaving) and how the corruption of the government needs to be ended. The futuristic world had been born through the rampage of an illness and plague that had devastated the modern world. The story unfolds to tell of Chancellor Sutler who rose to power (oddly similar to the way Hitler rose) and created a government that is oppressing the peoples liberty. V searches to start a revolution - with Eve at his side - to overthrow the oppression and create a new democracy. The specific scene I've chosen is one from the start of a movie where V hacks into the television network and broadcasts about the Fifth of November and how he sees the need for change. The scene itself displays the ideals of democracy and the necessity of people to be heard and recognized within their government. V specifically states to the people that "but if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as i seek, then I ask you to stand beside me" showing his values in that the government must change in order for progress to be made. He also recognizes the value of the fear that can cause a society to cower under their government and to allow their government to be allowed free reign. V says this: "Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor, Adam Sutler. He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent." His two main values he displays create a scene and speech that can honestly be considered unforgettable. V uses his words to attempt to create a new community - to bring people together in order to make their voice be heard. He takes ideals and places them in the minds of people to create a sort of likeness within them in order to start the desired revolution. V seems to use this speech within the scene to create the truth that the government should serve the people - an ideal that's been around for quite a long time - and that if the government is unable to do so, a change should be instigated. V is explaining that the people in a nation should not sit idly by and let their government be in charge, but should work to be a part of their government and to have their voice be heard.
yep....got one still trying after all these years. this song takes me back to a place called the Bubble Room, wearing a black silk cocktail suit and Bal a Versailles, dancing in a dark, cool place, the smell of his cologne, the feel of his jacket against my hand....nothing like a good jazz song to bring back the memories,
Cry me a River. - Julie London This song has stood the test of time. It hasn’t dated at all. Playing it today is just like when it was first videoed. Nice and easy does it all the time.
I had to visit this after I heard it sung on Your Honor. I'm very familiar with the song from way back when it first came out and I just wanted to hear Julie London singing again . Terrific
I'm just floored (pardon the pun) over just how quiet the noise floor is here. I can hear Julie's breath perfectly. I wonder what they recorded it with (I believe this was the fifties, and I would expect more noise from full-track chrome tape @30ips than I hear right now! The slow performance, jazz style, dark vocal style and mood make this a brainworm!
She’s a vastly underrated singer. One of the best.
only chris connor does the same to my ears
The best use of the word plebeian in any song in the history of songs

Now you say you're lonely
You cry the whole night through
Well, you can cry me a river, cry me a river
I cried a river over you
Now you say you're sorry
For bein' so untrue
Well, you can cry me a river, cry me a river
I cried a river over you
You drove me, nearly drove me out of my head
While you never shed a tear
Remember, I remember all that you said
Told me love was too plebeian
Told me you were through with me and
Now you say you love me
Well, just to prove you do
Come on and cry me a river, cry me a river
I cried a river over you
I cried a river over you
I cried a river over you
I cried a river over you

Well, you can cry me a river, cry me a river
I cried a river over you
Now you say, you're sorry
For bein' so untrue
Well, you can cry me a river, cry me a river
I cried a river over you
You drove me, nearly drove me out of my head
While you never shed a tear
Remember, I remember all that you said
Told me love was too plebeian
Told me you were through with me and
Now you say, you love me
Well, just to prove you do
Come on and cry me a river, cry me a river
I cried a river over you
I cried a river over you
I cried a river over you
I cried a river over you
Thanks for posting. I fell in love with this song from the tv series, “The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel.” ❤️
Barney Kessel on the guitar. Absolutely legendary player
I’ve heard this song sampled in a beat for years and I’ve loved it (actually, it’s my favorite Lofi song of all time called Astral Convex). My friend just played me this original song tonight and I was so happy to finally hear the original!
40 this year, been listening for 21 years, started me singing, epitome of seductive singing.... 😍
I just absolutely love this. It is so relaxing and a perfect night time tune for before I hit the sack.
The definitive version of this song
I'm crying me a river right now. I'm 66 years old and I've never heard this song performed by her. What a waste of time and opportunity.. 😭😭😭😭
But if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as I seek, then I ask you to stand beside me one year from tonight, outside the gates of Parliament, and together we shall give them a fifth of November that shall never, ever be forgot
The film itself centers around Eve (Natalie Portman) and the British terrorist V (Hugo Weaving) and how the corruption of the government needs to be ended.
Beautiful and magnificent - both singer and song
Too many lovers regret being mean when it's too late... ...I was involved in just such a situation: a girl I once adored now looks ordinary to me!
yep....got one still trying after all these years. this song takes me back to a place called the Bubble Room, wearing a black silk cocktail suit and Bal a Versailles, dancing in a dark, cool place, the smell of his cologne, the feel of his jacket against my hand....nothing like a good jazz song to bring back the memories,
No one in the industry ever has or ever will have the number of magnificent album covers as Julie London..
Cry me a River. - Julie London
This song has stood the test of time. It hasn’t dated at all. Playing it today is just like when it was first videoed. Nice and easy does it all the time.
Still a splendid voice in 2019*..
I see many of you have great taste via music
My teacher played this song during class, and that's why I looked it up! It's such a beautiful song!
What voice Unique!!
