- Ella Fitzgerald (First Lady of Jazz, 1917-1996) sings The Girl(Boy) from Ipanema ("Garota de Ipanema"), a popular bossa nova song; written in 1962 by Brazilian musician/composer Antonio Carlos (Tom) Jobim (1927-1994). It became a worldwide hit in the mid-60s and won Record for the Year Grammy award in 1965.
This is an excerpt of the a concert in São Paulo, Brazil 1971, with Tommy Flanagan on piano.
Brazilians, feel honored. This woman is making a tribute to brazilian music. The great Ella singing the great songs of your nation. This is beautiful!
Thanks for you comment Luis. Brazilian greetings!
We are surely honored by this wonderful American singer: Misses Ella Fitzgerald.
Some friends and I sneaked into a Music Hall to use to bathroom one time when we were teenagers and we heard singing in the distance and went to investigate. Miss Ella Fitzgerald was on stage performing. She was way older and a lot slimmer than here, but her voice was just as youthful. We were amazed!!!
What a memory!
I have to be honest, I haven't heard or seen anyone else sing the way she does. So I'm not sure if I can she's the best, but like...her scatting is legendary man.
i agree with leticia. I'm brazilian too and the original version is much much better. Buuut, she is a wonderful singer. I wonder: the original version in her voice would be just perfect.
Lindo!!!
English: I'm brazilian, like much Tom Jobim and music "The Girl from Ipanema". Ella sang a lot! Beautiful!
Hermoso!
Valdina.
Rio in 60's...awesome....
Tall and tan, and young and handsome
The boy from Ipanema goes walking
And when he passes, each girl he passes goes, ah
When he walks he's like a samba
That swings so cool, and sways so gentle
That when he passes each girl, he passes goes, ah
Oh, but I watch him so sadly
How can I tell him I love him?
Yes, I would give my heart gladly
But each day when he walks to the sea
He looks straight ahead, not at me
Tall, and tan, and young and handsome
The boy from Ipanema goes walking
And when he passes, I smile but he doesn't see
No, he doesn't see, he doesn't see me
Oh, but I watch him so sadly
How can I tell him I love him?
Yes, I would give my heart gladly
But each day when he walks to the sea
He looks straight ahead, not at me
Tall, and tan, and young and handsome
The boy from Ipanema goes walking
And when he passes, I smile but he doesn't see
He just doesn't see, he just doesn't see

what an enjoyable performance. love everyone of ella's live performances. her fantastic improvisation is legendary.
I think this kind of performance is probably more enjoyable live. Part of the thrill is in its kinetic forward energy revelling in the joy of on the spot creation. I don't think you can evaluate this then same way you would a song where improvisation played no part. Some fans of Ella really adore this style of singing. I'm so hooked on the beauty of her voice, I prefer recordings where she exploits that aspect of performance. I'm going back to listen to "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most' for the third time this morning.
a voz dessa mulher é apaixonante
I can't get enough of Ella.. I admire her so much
36 thumbs down gotta go some where else
The Real Queen of Scat Jazz
Was there ever a doubt?
Too good. She makes me sad I won't be able to this even though I practice all of my life! Such amazing!
a polarized audiance she has in both extremes of ignorance... this should be a psychological study and may have been but i am not that interested in the results, it is just a passing comment

Enjoy New Generation Bossa Nova too, Thanks..
Wonderful.... Would like to be there!
Seems like some of you don't understand jazz...
Seems like you don't understand, The Girl from Ipanema is a bossa nova song, not necessarily jazz. It's a samba hybrid.
I couldnt agree more with jmoul Some people have no creativity or dont like jazzz. Its ellas version.
My favorite song by Ella!! I want to really know what the comment that ninuxy left in regards to fat black women? How some things will never change?? I see ignorance will never change either!!! BLACK IS AND HAS BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE BEAUTIFUL.. IF IT WASN'T WHY DO SO MANY WHITE FOLKS IMITATE US?? What a talented vocalist was Ella Fitzgerald I can't call any vocalist of any nationality who had such poise and vocal control! What a wonderful gift to music lovers of all races colors and creeds!!
Kate Smith, and Mildred Bailey (White) were "full figure girls ", who talks about them now? Ella endures; Long live "The First Lady of Song".
Ella is my love.

I know you're a true crime documentary enthusiast. The invitation to watch the latest true crime documentary video is still valid. Perhaps this video will catch your interest.
SENSACIONAL, difícil até expressar em palavras.
Parabéns, tens um gosto refinado! 👏

I can also hear "Fly Me to the Moon", "O Nosso Amor", "Cielito Lindo", scat and drums ;), "Água de Beber"
WOW, Ella whales like no other person in the world could, unbelievable!
every song she sings is exceptional, fantastic voice and improvisation !
Why are only two songs from this concert on youtube.. I mean really... it was a concert that was taped in Brazil.. are there more songs than just Useless Landscape and The Girl from Ipenema ... back then her concerts were at least an hour loong
Here's the legendary musician Bob Strauch's version with his own lyrics: ua-cam.com/video/IDxLedytMm0/v-deo.html
I'm a HUGE fan of Ella, I wish I had had the pleasure of listening to her incredible voice live, specially in my home town, speaking and singing a little portuguese and everything. Too bad I wasn't even born for the next 20 years, haha. Guess the video will have to do, thank you very much for uploading!
@leticiasehamandagaga i agree. weird is the right word. she and other jazz musicians at that time hadnt yet enuff exposure to the brasilian feel. her version of desafinado is beyond wierd, into the bizarre.
Cielito Lindo scat!
lol yeah maybe a little but it's still good
ella is jazz vocal legend..! :))
Ella is sooo cool.
i feel sorry you cannot appreciate the scope of human creativity in its fullest. "rap" only carries a negative connotation for you because you haven't heard enough rap to know the broad range it offers.
I urge you to research a little, the origins in spoken word music, in the likes of The Last Poets, Gil Scott-Heron and others.
Rappers have experimented with jazz. I invite you to listen to A Tribe Called Quest's Jazz (We've Got)... If you can't appreciate that, im sorry.
@ninuxy obviously you cant read. i gave my comment although im even more tickled that you chose to respond to me!

i love the way she used to play with her great voice...
My Lady is just shamelessly showing off. ... Because with a voice like hers, she know she can without being vain. Ella's having some fun.
happy b'day Ella!
Ella Jane Fitzgerald (Newport News, 25 de abril de 1917 - Beverly Hills, 15 de junio de 1996), conocida como Ella Fitzgerald y apodada Lady Ella y The First Lady of Song (La primera dama de la canción), fue una cantante estadounidense de jazz.

Tom Jobim, the musician who (with Vinícius de Moraes) gave the world “The Girl from Ipanema”, once said that “New York is great, but it’s a mess; Rio is a mess, but it’s great”
pavorooo!!!!!
She is singing "The boy" of Ipanema. She is great. Just it's a shame she didn't sing"The girl of Ipanema" in portuguese, that sounds so sweet.
