I always vacuum last EXCEPT in the bathrooms; vacuum first, otherwise when water gets on the floor tile while rinsing out bathtub, shower stall, etc. you might have a gooey mess of hair, pet fur, and dust which sticks to the vacuum and causes more work. Thank you for all your tips!
While all of this is great advice, hopefully people understand that dust is INEVITABLE. You will *NEVER* have a fuilly clean spotless house... never! So don't stress so much about dust, its a part of life and we have immune systems for a reason. Do sufficient cleaning so its not horrible or smelly etc, but worrying about every spec of dust will just drive you insane.
And some have multiple people in the home with horrible allergies but live not by choice, near a hwy that creates excessive accumulated dust nonstop...my situation personally is maddening. I sware the dust in here piles up by the dang second, and tons of it, I've never lived anywhere that had dust like this place, it's horrible and I'm loosing my mind but I absolutely can't find anywhere else I can afford for this much space and I have a yard...I don't want to loose that and so I've decided to tolerate the dust and just do my best to find as many little tips tricks I can to manage it as much as possible.
I am absolutely convinced that dusting should be done with a damp microfiber. I rinse the cloth out and squeeze the water out to dust everything. Otherwise, the dry microfiber kicks most of the dust into the air. Just dust where a sun beam is streaming in your window and you’ll see it. The damp cloth catches it all.
i wipe with a slightly damp cloth, then, if its really humid, i wipe it dry. sometimes i use a feather duster, but only for fragile things in particular areas. not in general grotsville sections.
I've been binging on your videos for the last 2 days! I can't thank you enough for this channel and all of the detail you put into your uploads! I got married last year and moved in with my husband who owns a 111 year old home. I lived with my parents up until I was married so entering a home that I needed to keep clean on a daily basis was extremely overwhelming. I've been there almost a year now and feel like I'm finally getting a handle on everything. These videos have been so inspiring over the last couple days and have given me the push to clean the places I haven't been able to get to yet. THANK YOU!
If I was your son...only thing I'd be doing is being at home doing what you tell me to do with no back talk or arguing. I'd do all of the cleaning so you don't have to worry with it! I'd help out in all other areas. My only happiness would be to obey you and make you happy!
Really enjoy your vlogs, you know your cleaning. My Grandma was a stickler for a clean home. She retired down in Florida and would help ppl who couldn't clean their homes anymore. My Grandma was my best friend, supported me and always had my back. I miss her everyday, her name Mary Mehringer. My Grandparents are from Hungary. Joan Bates ❤
I prefer watching this UA-cam channel than Andrea Jean Cleaning channel. Keep it up. I’ve been watching Melissa since 2012 or 2013. First video I watched of hers was when I was house sitting my grandparents house and I had a pot overflowing on my grandparents glass top stove. My grandmother is a neat freak. You grab a dish and you use it and you wash it. It does not sit in the sink waiting to be washed. So whatever I had in a pan was overflowing, it burned the stovetop and I panicked. I searched on UA-cam how to fix this problem and I came across the clean my space channel. Melissa saved me from being in trouble. Thank you Melissa, you are a godsend.
I take VERY good care of my vacuum, having been educated by MM to do so. It makes me glad to know that the machine is clean and functioning properly, as well as getting a longer lifespan out of my vacuum, which saves me money in the long run.
The most helpful thing for dusting is to have the air ducts cleaned in your home. I bought and remodeled an old home. It had been a rental for many years. When we had Stanley steamer clean the air ducts I was horrified by the before photos. The dust in my home has greatly diminished. I will have it done at least every 5 years!
I just started watching your videos a couple of weeks ago when my friend asked if I would like a job cleaning her home. Game changer!!! Such great tips snd I am now even more obsessed with baking soda! You had mentioned essential oils in the vacuum filter, so last week I actually washed the filter for my central vac 😷 and sprinkled it with some peppermint and geranium oil. 😃. Thanks for all your great tips
Hah, 17 cats and 4 dogs (one dog is a rescue foster) with all hardwood floors here. My “vacuum sandwich” is more of a “multilayer.” I vacuum, general clean/tidy & clean ceiling fan blades, vacuum again, get the battery Stihl blower from the garage and get stuff out from under the furniture, off the walls/dust collectors, vacuum again, then hit the walls with with a dry microfiber mop and microfiber furniture… then I vacuum cat towers individually and vacuum again….. then I damp mop the floor. The vacuum dumps of pet hair fill up half the trash can, the vacuums are cleaned after (cut out stuck pet hair on movables, and filters cleaned), and that’s every Sunday. Pro-tip: hit the clumps of pet hair you can see with the “wand” so they don’t have a chance to get stuck in the wheels. Really helps a lot. Again, with this many pets, I basically have to do it every Sunday. The kids rooms… that’s a battle because the whole upstairs is carpeted and it’s difficult to get them to clean well enough for me to shampoo and reduce the dust trapped in the carpet once a month or so. Edit: I have a background including hazmat incident response and remediation (including planning for radioisotope clean up) so I go a little overboard, but if I don’t with a couple of weeks of only vacuuming, the wife and kids are complaining of allergies and other respiratory issues. Also, thankfully, all of my intake vents to the HVAC are up higher (none on the floor) so my high merv filters usually still last 4-5 months with all that cleaning. Also, I have two roombas running daily, hah!
I always learn something new! Thanks. I originally came here to help me clean up a specific mess and then I found many tips and I stayed for years 😁 I have the cloths, I want more because it is great quality.

I just THOUGHT I knew how to clean until I found your channel! Thank you for all the great info. I use two different vacuums. My main is a central vac built into my house. I love it! No dirty air coming out because the collection unit is in the garage. For little clean ups, I have a cordless that the kids can easily use (bonus!)

I am from Dhaka, Bangladesh and dusting needs to be done every other day here. The place is a lot more dusty than the western cities. Your channel helped me a lot mastering this regular task. I even got your microfiber clothes this year :D
vacuum cleaners are my passion! I will say that bagged vacuum cleaners are the best at containing dust and keep 99% of the dust out of the room with good ones. the good vacuum cleaners I highly recommend are all bagged but they are, Melie, Sebo, Riccar, Oreck and Kirby. you can use your vacuum cleaners for dusting and I do. I have a Kirby vacuum that has a gentle brush for dusting I don't dust with my vacuum all the time but I would say if you have a thick layer of dust, use your vacuum because you don't want to kick up that much dust. also its a good idea to use your vacuum to dust at least once a month to really clean out dust in your home. don't forget about your central heating and air system, that has lots of dust too. vacuum the vents every 6 months and change your filters at least once every 3 months
Thanks for the vid. One thing to consider is that microfiber "cloth" yields Micro plastics that we breathe and don't degrade, so we've stopped buying those. Of course, most clothing has some plastic (polyester) in it. So we've stopped using those and moved to cotton. Know we are dispersing more dust if using dry cotton cloth. Question not using a moist cotton cloth to dust, rather than a dry one.
I just cleaned my vacuum. By the way when my vacuum filters are really dirty I’ve found putting them in my wash machine on gentle cycle is the way to go!! Does a great job. I could never get all the dirt out. Now they are clean and the spinning leaves them dry faster! So far they have not been damaged by this method!

Ok ok ok! I just tested out the microfiber cloth for dusting using the 8 part folding method and it worked great! I used to use the traditional dusters, which always grossed me out because they would always get super dirty. The microfiber cloth can easily be thrown in the washing machine. 😁 Another great part about the microfiber cloth is that I noticed a lot less dust flying thru the air when dusting lol Btw cleaning from top to bottom is hard for me because old habits die hard.
These tips really help me a lot. I hate dusting so much because I live in tropical country where dusting is so hard to be cleaned and comes up everyday :(
Thank you again! I could not figure out why my vacuum was spitting back dust, etc, and to make matters worse my daughter and I just threw out her vacuum instead of maintenance as you just explained. Thank you. I even cleaned my car today.. you inspired me.. and I feel mentally better! Catherine
Getting ready to deep clean before setting up Christmas and enjoyed reviewing how to dust, and vac. I clean out my vac each time I use it. I go to the garage where my husband has a air compressor and after using the vac I empty out the bin and filter and I use the air on the filter and do a quickie on the bin before putting it back together for the next time. Every quarter I do the same but add washing out the bin and change the filter for another four months.
I've got a Henry hoover & the only thing I really need to clean is to change the bag. I love my Henry, especially his smiley face:) I always use a feather duster when I'm dusting & then I polish with Pledge etc afterwards.
Your videos are awesome. Thank you so much. I have cleaned my kitchen and bathroom thanks to your motivation. I am clueless about cleaning and you are a big help
I clean my vacuum fairly regularly. I wipe down the container for the dust every time I empty it. I clean the brush after each use, and I rinse out the filter once a month. In summer I also give the tubes a bath and let them dry in the sun.
The tip to use a dry microfiber cloth to dust was life-changing! I tried it when I was listening and it worked like magic and goes really fast. No residing necessary. The key is to use a good quality microfiber cloth like makers😉
My god I had no idea thwre were so many methods and tips for dusting. I had apparently done a pretty conciderable amount of things wrong my entire life! I can't say for sure yet since I haven't tried out anything mentioned urt, but I am pretty confident that this bideo just improved the ease of cleaning fpr me conciderably!
We clean our vacuums before spring cleaning, after spring cleaning, fall cleaning, after Christmas and any other time they need it. By “we” I mean my husband cleans them - I write the task on his chore list and he happily takes them apart to clean all of the filters, brushes, etc.. I vacuum and he maintains our equipment. 😍
I use to work for 5 star hotel, I was teached to have a damp cloth to dust always. Using dry cloth is just moving the dust around into air. The moisture in cloth makes the dust to stick to it totally makes sense.
The purpose of water is to trap some of the dust in a fabric (like cotton) that isn't capable of efficiently trapping dust on its own. You don't need water at all when you use a microfiber terry cloth rag because it traps more dust even without water. It doesn't just kick dust up like a dry cotton rag does. By avoiding water, you also avoid the side-effect of it, which is a dust slurry that can get left behind when you use a damp cloth. Also, by using microfiber you avoid leaving behind lint from your cleaning rag. So you're right if you are comparing a dry cotton rag with a damp cotton rag, but not when you are comparing a dry microfiber terry cloth rag with a wet cotton rag, for example.
1 thank you. This is literally how I was taught to dust. You know every Saturday 😫 as a kid., but as an adult I lied to my self about the disposable dusters. So now here I go with real dusting again
I am loving your jeans!! If you see this, or if anyone else knows, what brand and style are the jeans? They’re sooo cute and looks so comfortable!! Must have. ❤️🙏🏻🤞🏻
@Clean My Space I'm watching this from Australia. You have truly changed my attitude to cleaning. I love your videos. Thank you soooo much 😘 9:25 Just a handy tip. I would empty and wash clean really dirty cloths outside, not in the kitchen or bathroom sink. Clogging up the drains over time might be an issue?
This was a great video and very useful information; glad I checked it out today and can take advantage of the sale- love Maker's Clean microfiber clothes; I clean my dyson vacuum regularly- else I have some clogging issues - I had to do a major clean recently
It takes a lot of time to clean a Dyson. I soak it and keep spraying water through it. There's nothing mechanical in the cylinder so water doesn't damage it
Just replaced the two filters in my vacuum. One is a cylinder foam piece and the other is a flat filter in the bottom. Didn't do more than that, but I can tell already it smells better and works better 😌
Hi Melissa. I love your channel. I have some wooden furniture that is hard to dust. I think I have build up of product on the surface. How do I get rid of that build-up so my cloth goes easily across the surface?
I like how you change outfits in your videos or add clips with different outfits, similar to music videos... I notice that the most in music videos, great job, that's how the professionals are doing it. 👍 #ThinkCleanThinkGreen
The one I can use is a rechargeable one and I clean it out every time I use it. The big vacuum that I can't use because of mobility issues my husband maintains. I think he last cleaned it in 1786.
I have been watching your videos before I celan each room and really appreciate your information and it makes me want to clean. LOL I would like a video how to really clean my self-cleaning oven because it doesn't do a good job and it says to remove racks. I see you have a video how to do just that. Really appreciated video on how to clean Dyson stick vacuum
I cleaned my old Hoover cordless much more often than I clean my Dyson just because it was SO EASY to take apart to clean. I also do my current corded Shark vacuum upstairs much more often because it too is easy to clean. My Dyson is a corded ball vacuum but a smaller model. It’s a pain in the rear and I’m not sure when the last time was it was done. It’s also the vacuum I used the least because I don’t like it.
You sold me on the microfiber clothes! Could you please do an instructional video on the different types of microfiber cloths and what each is used for? Also some instructions on how to get out those little nibby scratchy things that stick in the clothes.
I'm so glad I purchased a Henry vacuum because my floors in my kitchen used to be so dusty from when I swept, but since I've been using henry, I don't even get dust that builds up underneath the chair legs anymore because it's so handy to have the hose to get into corners and the air quality is so much better in my house because I use it everyday over a broom.
Laugh out loud it's time to clean mine!! Thanks for the tips I actually learned a co u ple of things I don't do right!!! and I have a couple houses I clean So this helps!! I'm going to buy some more microfiber clothes...I love the ones I have!!!!
Hi ! I love watching your videos on cleaning to laundry etc. You sold me on the Dyson V8 Absolute vacuum and I have to say it was money well spent, thank you . I also bought quite a few of your microfiber cloths, which I absolutely love. My question is when using the vacuum is it necessary to clean the filters after every use ? I know that may sound like a dumb question, but this is my first time ever owning a Dyson, I have always wanted one, but they were so pricey, and I found myself in a position where I could finally afford one. Thank you so much for your videos and I have found that I have been doing some things wrong when it comes to cleaning.
I clean my vacuum every 5-6 weeks, and change the bag and filter if necessary. For my robot vacuum I empty the bin every day after it runs, and wash the filter and clean the brush roll once a month (that one is meant for daily upkeep cleaning, the Miele canister is for deep cleaning). I have asthma and have always been advised to avoid dry dusting, so I dust with my vacuum using the horse hair brush attachment. Then I go over surfaces with a damp microfiber cloth. I use the vacuum for a ton of things: dusting, vacuuming blinds and curtains, baseboards, crown molding, high dusting, vacuuming sofas, mattresses, pillows. One should always look for vacuums with HEPA filters and complete seal (true for robot vacs as well).
I always spray and wipe when dusting...I felt that dry dusting just stirred up more dust...even when using microfiber. It's been a while since I cleaned my vacuum. I need to rinse out the filter of my cordless Dyson. My normal vacuum has disposable bags and I just change them when needed.
Melissa, you sound just like my mother :) Dust first, top down. The one thing that was different was the floors. She insisted the floors be swept first then dusted. She reasoned that the straw brooms kicked up dust and left it behind because they were coarse. So, we swept first to get the big stuff, then dusted or vacuumed. (because, heaven help you if you accidentally vacuumed up a bobby pin.)
I don't sweep first, but I walk around and clear the floor with my hands. When I was young I used to crawl around and do it and then I love to sprinkle the powder and then vacuum but now there's no carpet so no powder. Then I dry swiffer. them wet swiffer if I have the strength lol
so you have a microfiber cloth, you have a lot of dust, how do you unload the dust from the cloth? or do you just keep wiping with a dusty microfiber cloth? and where do stand on air cleaners? yes or no?
I've cleaned my vacuum last week. I tend to do regular (every week) because its easy & I love the smell when you have done it or while your doing if you put essential oils on the filter 😉❤🙌 xxx
I cleaned my vacuum and bought new filters for it probably about 6 months ago, and I clean my Bissell cross wave at least once a week because it has to be cleaned out and also the filter needs to be left out to dry to prevent mildew & mold.
Thanks!
Thanks, Ellen!

Awesome work, Ginger 👏🏼
I lost you several months ago and today you popped up on my feed again! Yaaa!!!
I've got a Henry hoover & the only thing I really need to clean is to change the bag. I love my Henry, especially his smiley face:)
I always use a feather duster when I'm dusting & then I polish with Pledge etc afterwards.
This video finally made me order a new filter for my vacuum...thanks for the reminder, Melissa!
You are so welcome!
Thank you! Love to hear the waste-saving tips on materials
That's awesome to hear, Tina.
@@cleanmyspace I learned from the best (that would be YOU).
Never thought I'd be watching a video like this. Thanks!
I needed that reminder to clean my vacuum filters. Thanks. Now it will run like a dream when it’s ready to use again :D
The tip to use a dry microfiber cloth to dust was life-changing! I tried it when I was listening and it worked like magic and goes really fast. No residing necessary. The key is to use a good quality microfiber cloth like makers😉
Vacuum Wars is a good channel to watch. He reviews vacuums. He shows which vacuums leak air. I only buy Hepa vacuums now.
Like the microfiber folding trick, it is often used in auto detailing 👍🏽
It's the thought of dusting that puts me of when it's done it's such a relief you wonder why you did not do it in first place good video thanks
The cloth folding tip is nice!
I agree.
@@jonmusselwhite2839 I prefer to dust with a little soap and water. If I dry dust, I have to follow it with a soap and water wipe down anyway.
Cleaned my Dyson 2 months ago. I believe in regularly cleanings.
Nice, Melissa! And nice name :)
@@cleanmyspace I've had my name for almost 68 years...it was unheard of when I was a kid. Teachers couldn't pronounce it, let alone spell it 😂
Love your channel! I clean (dust) the upstairs one week and down the next! 😃
Nice one.
THE best dusting video ever!
I watch your videos all the time. Thank you! Do you have any tips and tricks on cleaning artificial plants like green leafy plants?
Yes! A dry microfiber cloth to wipe the dust first, and then go over a second time with a damp microfiber cloth.
Excellent video. Thank you for the information. The micro fiber trick is going to change my cleaning game for sure!!!
1 thank you. This is literally how I was taught to dust. You know every Saturday 😫 as a kid., but as an adult I lied to my self about the disposable dusters. So now here I go with real dusting again
Very informative. Goes to show, even old dogs like me can still learn new tricks.
I am loving your jeans!! If you see this, or if anyone else knows, what brand and style are the jeans? They’re sooo cute and looks so comfortable!! Must have. ❤️🙏🏻🤞🏻
Thank you for the reminder to clean my vacuum!!
Great tips and several things I’d never thought of … thanks! I have used your microfiber cloths for years … they’re the best IMO!
I'm always learning something new on your vids, can't wait for your next upload, Melissa.
Thanks for these wonderful professional tips. I always learn something new from your shows
How do I get rid of the dust in the dry micro Fiber cloth?
Yes, this is what I want to know. Wherever you shake it out will become a mess itself.
@Clean My Space I'm watching this from Australia. You have truly changed my attitude to cleaning. I love your videos. Thank you soooo much 😘
9:25 Just a handy tip.
There's nothing mechanical in the cylinder so water doesn't damage it
Wow, great tips! Thanks so much!
Of course! That's what I'm here for.
I love watching you all the time. Could you please tell me how to clean decorative plants.
Just replaced the two filters in my vacuum. One is a cylinder foam piece and the other is a flat filter in the bottom. Didn't do more than that, but I can tell already it smells better and works better 😌
Me too. My Kenmore has these filters. I’ve stocked up on the small filters. I can buy the hepa filter bags at Target, but not brand name.
😂😂😂
I have been watching your videos before I celan each room and really appreciate your information and it makes me want to clean. LOL I would like a video how to really clean my self-cleaning oven because it doesn't do a good job and it says to remove racks. I see you have a video how to do just that. Really appreciated video on how to clean Dyson stick vacuum
Love the knowledge you share with us! I have a question, I have two cats and their hair floats all over the home. How can I win the cat fur battle?
I cleaned my old Hoover cordless much more often than I clean my Dyson just because it was SO EASY to take apart to clean. I also do my current corded Shark vacuum upstairs much more often because it too is easy to clean. My Dyson is a corded ball vacuum but a smaller model. It’s a pain in the rear and I’m not sure when the last time was it was done. It’s also the vacuum I used the least because I don’t like it.
Miele - best vacuum ever. Can’t stand Dysons
You sold me on the microfiber clothes! Could you please do an instructional video on the different types of microfiber cloths and what each is used for? Also some instructions on how to get out those little nibby scratchy things that stick in the clothes.
I'll add this one to my list, Eydie.
Always practical and informative..... Thanks!!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Melissa, thank you for this video! I have a question. How often should you dust your home?
Following 😊
Laugh out loud it's time to clean mine!! Thanks for the tips I actually learned a co u ple of things I don't do right!!! and I have a couple houses I clean So this helps!!
I'm going to buy some more microfiber clothes...I love the ones I have!!!!
Always use a damp cloth when dusting. Brushing it off just disperses it into the air and onto other surfaces.
Wow that's exactly what we do in Pakistan. Cause we mop after dusting to pick up finishes of dusts.
so you have a microfiber cloth, you have a lot of dust, how do you unload the dust from the cloth? or do you just keep wiping with a dusty microfiber cloth? and where do stand on air cleaners? yes or no?
I now use a very slightly damp microfibre cloth seems to work better
thanks for the video!! I would like to know what is the best way to clean a glass table if it has pet fur on it
Thanks for the four fold trick!!!!!
I've cleaned my vacuum last week. I tend to do regular (every week) because its easy & I love the smell when you have done it or while your doing if you put essential oils on the filter 😉❤🙌 xxx
OMG, your walls are amazing!!! Love your videos, what is the brand name paint you used?
OMG! I don't even remember when was the last time I cleaned my vacuum cleaner... Guess it means I should do it right now!
That's not a bad idea 🤣
@@cleanmyspace Hahaha!
I cleaned my vacuum and bought new filters for it probably about 6 months ago, and I clean my Bissell cross wave at least once a week because it has to be cleaned out and also the filter needs to be left out to dry to prevent mildew & mold.
What about robot vacuums that travel around the room on their own? How effective are they?
