F30 BMW | Permanently Open Exhaust Valves | No Tune Required
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 кві 2020
- Today I'm gonna show you guys how to force the exhaust valves to stay open on an F3X BMW by just pulling a plug. Open valves will give you extra sound when idling or driving at low RPM.
Stock exhausts and even some aftermarket exhausts are designed to be quiet when just cruising around. This design makes sense, but I still prefer the car to be loud all the time.
Most tunes give you the ability to open the valves, but I noticed that the exhaust would still close sometimes even when it was set to stay open. Thats why I think this is the best way to do it.

Update: Better solution than taping the plugs. Go on ECS tuning and search up 'Exhaust Flap Actuator Plug Cover'
Check out what this exhaust sounds like after a VRSF downpipe and tune! ua-cam.com/video/TU24rn_c6go/v-deo.html
How does the actuator plug work? Do you plug it into the empty slot on the exaust? Or do you fix it to the cable that you waterproofed?
Any solutions for protecting the plug on the exaust itself?
Thanks man.
Man these BMWs have a serious sound
Just wanna say man, thank you. I’ve been living with that annoying rattle for way to long. Finally solved thanks to this video.
Glad it helped
Nice first vid great how to video
Good vid and great sound. I did mines without it having to be turned on. Just make sure when you shut off the engine, after properly warmed up, while it's in sport(+) mode. It will then turn it off with the valve(s) closed.
I learned in school. Back in the day when turbos were making their way into more cars. Guys would rev up their engines and then turn the car off to see whose turbos would stay spinning the longest. I don’t know about newer cars but imagine turning your car off while the turbo is still spooling and hot. The oil that’s in there won’t go anywhere because the car has be turned off so you’d just have hot oil sitting in your turbo to be cooked into sludge.
I did this to mine but I feel like my sound a lot more high and raspy compared to the video has a little deeper tone. Also I do get a lot of pops in sport mode 😈
Great video, I have an F22 and was wondering if this would work with my car also ?
Yeah it should be the same process on that car.
Youre the best bro, worked on my car, cold start is just insane
Yeah luckily it only lasts for like 10 seconds.
@@NWAuto 10 sec ? why
@@contentmaker7777
Engine warms up not being cold no more
I thought that plug on the AWE was just to trick the DME, because AWE(w/ midpipe) is basically a straight piped exhaust. Meaning no valves right? When you hear the exhuast flap opening sound after the cold start sequence is up, i was under the impression that was just the flap motor moving but there was no actual flap... correct me if im wrong?
I think that would be the AWE track exhaust and not the touring exhaust, which I’m not sure is even available for my car. Mine got louder after I did this. And I can hear the flap close on mine like 20 seconds after a cold start.
Valve Dig Sauce
if you don’t want to unplug the cord, you can open the flaps via sport mode + revving, then go to your fuse box and take out 146 and 147
Yeah that works well too
Do you take out the fuses while the car is on or off???
I have to try this.. how much you have to revv before taking the fuse’s out ?
Please respond do I take of the fuse while the car is reving .
@@snfirefirefanatics494 yes and whilst reviving. This way the valve opens and then when you pull the fuse the valve has no power to then close after
Love it
I have a 340i (2016) I’m assuming it’s same location as yours?
Also they sell a fake plug actuator that I guess plugs into the spot where the real actuator went into. So with the fake actuator I guess you plug the hole so to speak but you still have to deal with the dangling plug and wire? How did you secure that dangling wire ? What is it attached to ?
If you check 1:38 you can see there is another wire there. I zip tied it to that wire.
Thx for response
I ordered the actuator plug cover and it looks pretty big and also has a what appears to be a fastener clip on it. Looking at the OEM plug I can see a very small tab. Do you just pull the plug part ( where the wires go into ) and if so do you squeeze that one tab or pry it and pull? or do you detach entire housing and then disconnect? A bit confusing
@@scottjohnson8316 I pushed the tab down and then pulled the plug. It is kind of annoying to remove. Just take your time to make sure you dont damage it. But no I didn't detach the entire housing.
Ok I unclipped it and it’s obvious now to me that the CABLE END goes INTO the dummy plug! I thought it was other way around.... like dummy plug cover plugged into the housing. But now there is an open female plug hole where male cable end used to go into to. Did you cover it with a piece of electrical tape or something? Does it matter?
Thx again
Nice video! Will the check engine light come on?
It won't
Just wondering what happens if I do this without revving the engine?
hey man anything I have to look out for being doing this besides heating the engine up before revving? planning on doing this today thanks!
Nothing else. Its pretty straight forward. The plug can be tough to pull though. There is a clip you need to pull down and then pull the plug.
@@NWAuto Any engine lights turn off for unpluging the muffler plug?
@@jrc6368 Nothing. I heard it might throw a silent code. Which means you no lights but if you plug in a code scanner it might detect that it's unplugged. But thats it
Thanks for the video. How can I do this on a 2014, 640i. I have looked under the car and I do not see any plugs, wires, etc. Nothing in the trunk either. However, there is a significant sound when cold (that I want full time). Thanks
Yeah that exhaust system is set up different. Your best bet is to find which fuse controls the exhaust flap and pull it while the flap is open. The BimmerLink app might help with keeping the exhaust flap open enough while you go remove the fuse
Great video.
Is it best to unplugg while the engine is off? When the engine is on? When it's on and cold? On and warm? Eco or sports mode?
Looking forward to doing this just not sure on When to unplug.
Turn the car on sport mode rev for a min nothing crazy shutoff and pull valve plug off
Can u pls put me on with places/websites that sell parts for a n52 09
No check engine on the dash? I wanted to do a muffler delete on my X6. Btw, your car sounds great 👍
No check engine from this
I did the same thing as you. Just one question: in your opinion, does this solution decrease engine performance from the moment the control unit detects a malfunction?
It shouldn't make any difference for performance
Hey, are there any tabs to release on the exhaust clip or does it just take a bit of force to pull out the plug?
There is a clip. It can be hard to remove because of the bad visibility.
Does the car have to be on when I unplug it?
Hi mate just a quick question I have a discovery sport 300hp petrol and when I start the car the valve stays open for about 30 second while the auto choke is on. Could I just pull the plug then? Or does the car have to be warm? Thanks.
I'd pull the plug when the flaps are open
I haven’t tried this yet but I have just noticed that when I start the car cold in comfort mode, I get a little grey smoke out of the driver’s side pipe only, nothing from the passenger one. Is this anything to do with the valve?
Yeah thats completely normal for these cars. Opening it up will make the exhaust gas exit from both
Hey mine came out by itself idk how
My AWE exhaust doesn’t have a valve flap. Was hoping it has one for highway cursing
I have the AWE exhaust too. There is something there that closes after you do a cold start. You can hear it shut if you do a cold start and just wait outside behind the car.
I would install an asr module so you can use a remote to open and close the valves
Yeah thats an option too. But I wanted it to always be open.
@@NWAuto the module can do that but when you want to close it or use the stock control you can enable it with the remote and don't have to plug it back in
Link to asr?
@@eventhorsbakken801 asr-component.de
Which fuse would you need to remove?
I’ve tried multiple times and for some reason even when I unplug it, the valve closes in eco then opens back up again in sport. and when i turn off the car and back on the valve is still able to close and open. Any suggestions?
Thats weird. You can try downloading the BimmerLink app and opening it through the app, then unplugging
So doing it this way ensures that the flaps stay open even when you turn it off regardless of the driving mode?
Yeah. Usually the flaps would only open when you revved it or drove aggressively. The way I think it should work is open in sport and sport+, closed in comfort and eco. But thats not the way it works. So I prefer always open
@@NWAuto thats what Ive been looking to do as well. I want the flaps to always be open regardless of the drive mode and even when i shut the car off
@@UlisesYaniz This is the solution for you then. Rev it out a little and pull the plug while the flaps are still open.
@@NWAuto thank you!
Does it make the valve loose? Or does it remain stuck like in the video.
It will not be loose. Stays stuck open.
@@NWAuto I also notice that with traction fully off the car is loud too. The drive modes are very complicated but my bm3 tune has sport all the way open. So all the other ones sound like shit
Quick question does this effect your mpg in any way
Not at all.
why should it it only effect how the car sounds
Do you have to water proof it?
You don't have to. But I would still at least tuck it away to the side. It rains a lot where I live so I decided to do it.
Will this trip the check engine light
No check engine.
I have a bmw f30 330i if I do this will my exhaust make some pops and small burbles
My car is stomach and it’s a 2018
This will only make it slightly louder. It will not add burbles. You can use a tune like Bootmod3 of MHD to add that.
Did you get a check engine on the dash?
No check engine light
does this have check engine light or does this cause problems
No check engine light. It will throw a code but it will be a silent code. You will only see it if you use a code reader. And it will go away if you put the plug back in.
NW Auto does it affect performance or does it cause overheating of any sort
@@alexzhang5624 I didn't have any issues at all.
Hi my name is Erig Pauler I have a bmw serie 3 335 Msport 2014 20,000 km I like to do this but I’m scared if cause any problems
Don't worry, It will not cause problems. The exhaust is already opening up when you drive in sport mode. This will just keep it open. And you can plug it back in anytime. Just make sure you use some tape to waterproof the plug when it's out.
So weird I have muffler and resonator delete.. but I still feel like they close… can it possible it is still connect? 😮 1 more hour to get offf work and I can check it out… I miss my stingray c7 sound :(
They are attached to the muffler. So I'm not sure how it would work without a muffler
@@NWAuto yeah, it’s gone lol
I wonder my stock exhaust have this valve. Mine was 2016 LCI B48 320i
I haven't worked with that exhaust so I'm not sure. I would look around the muffler and see if there is anything plugged into it.
I wonder if this works for the G82
It should if the plug is still there
Will the failure light come on if you pull the plug?
No lights come up. I think it will throw a silent code. So you will only see something if you plug in a code reader.
@@NWAuto any torque loss? I’ve heard it can cause
@@lifeclips3329 It didn't for me. But its easily reversible.
So I will get that sport mode sound while in normal mode?
Also do you know how to do this on a 2008 328xi
@@andreidavid5307 For the E9X I think people do the golf tee mod to open it up. Look up BMW golf tee mod. And yeah it should sound like its always in sport.
What do you recommend to waterproof the plug?
I used some tape thats water resistant
@@NWAuto brilliant thanks, going to give this a try this week on F32 428i
@@NWAuto do you reckon some bog standard gaffer tape would do the job or would you say something more like electrical tape would be better for weather proofing
Will this turn on check engine light ?
It won’t
I’m in oregon 2
Nice. Portland area?
Is it only the passenger side exhaust
The plug is on the driver side and pulling it keeps both tailpipes open at all times.
NW Auto Ok will it have any effect on sport mode?
@@dimen1997 Sport will remain the same
You dont even need to rev it.
I didnt at least on x40i. The flap is open when the car hasnt been driven, turn ignition on, dont start it and take the fuse out of 147 (i think). If you have a certain spec on reverse sensors, something stops working as it shares the fuse, but cant remember which, although my pdc works fine still.
I tried that. But mine would close when I didn't rev. Maybe the 335 was different
@@NWAuto it defo works on the x40i. The other easier option would be to open bimmerlink and open the flap from the app and then remove the fuse
Hey I have a question
I see the wire while the car is off so why is it needed to be on and in sport mode?
There is more than one way to do it. You can have the car be off and just manually open them and prevent them from closing.
@@NWAuto ah ok so I just start the car and wait till it’s warm and in sport then all I do is unplug?
@@brandon6431 Yeah that should work. Maybe rev it a little in sport just to make sure the exhaust is actually open.
Did u notice a difference I didn’t, I have a 335i m performance
I did this with the AWE touring exhaust and I did notice a difference. The flap used to close and it would get quieter. Doing this prevented it from closing.
Does it Show anything for errorcodes if i read out my car
I think it throws a silent error. So you won't see anything the dash, but a code scanner would likely pick it up
Would this work on a 225i 2 Series Active Tourer?
It should work if the exhaust has the flap and actuator in the back
Will this give you a warning light on the dash?
It will not.
@@NWAuto thanks will be doing it to mine now then👍🏽
Why not just pull out the fuse for the exhaust valve?
Never tried that, but I'm sure that would be a good solution too.
Has anyone tried this? Seems easier to do lol
@@tjfigueroa9789 You can try that. I think the fuse numbers are 146/147. The reason I did it the way I did is because the exhaust flap would close during idle even when the car was in sport mode. By revving it and pulling the plug, I was able to guarantee that it was open.
@@NWAuto so can I just pull the fuse? Or do I need to rev the engine, then pull fuse while revving?
@@BANDITHIPOWA you need to pull the fuse when the exhaust flap is open. I got it to open by revving it in sport mode
so this doesn't change sport mode does it?
does it change start up?
@@reece440i since its always open, it will be slightly louder on startups and during casual driving. No difference during heavy acceleration. I recommend trying it and then just plugging it back in if you don't end up liking it
Why not just pull the fuse from the fuse box that will make the flap always open? Asking because idk the answer I’m wondering the difference
There are multiple ways to do this. I never tried that option, but I'm sure it would work
Does this work on F32?
Yeah it should be the same
will this work for 340i 2018?
Yeah it shouldn't be any different. What exhaust do you have on it?
Does any lights on dash come on ??
I never got anything
Would this turn on engine check light
It does not
@@NWAuto It does on my F22, will try pulling the fuse
Tried waterproofing the plug and a little bit of water got through. it threw up a check engine light. should i just leave it to dry?
Yeah I'd try to let it dry. Is the light coming because of the plug for sure?
Would this work on an e82 135i?
The process might be different for E chassis. I only did it on F chassis
would this void warranty ?
It wouldn't. You can just plug it back in anytime
@@NWAuto cool. i did it to my 2018 330 and it made such a big difference thank you
@@user-jk7pf3uu7r Glad it helped. Go on ECS tuning and search 'Exhaust Flap Actuator Plug Cover' if you want a better solution than taping the plugs
Works for diesel engine ?
I haven't tried it. But if it has the valved feature then it should
There has to be a better way to do this
Yeah this is the way I learned from Bimmerpost. But pulling the fuse should also work. The main issue is that the BMW exhaust flap doesn't stay open in sport mode. It will close if you're not revving it or driving hard
Anyone try this and still have rattle ?
Which rattle? I haven't noticed any
