For any other new hedgehog owners watching, these tips really do work! Another thing I have found helpful in addition to his advice has been to put your hedgehog on the couch (with some towels on top of the sofa to prevent them from peeing/pooping on it or burrowing in between the cushions) every night when they’re active, place some food (preferably dried worms) on the couch, and sit next to them. Naturally, they’ll be bothered at first, but once they emerge from their ball, they’ll start to explore, go for the food, and will likely try to burrow under your arms, legs, and back. Whenever your hedgehog tries to approach you, try not to make any sudden movements. Aim to bring them out every night when they’re active for at least an hour and over time, they’ll gradually become more comfortable around you.
Had to stop by and let you know. Tonight (day 4) was the first time she relaxed in my arms. Spikes laid flat and she let my get under her belly and pick her up, even without the need for the towel. Progress I could not have made without the help of this video. Thanks... So hopefully now she will become more and more relaxed around me, so that soon my children can also learn how to handle her properly.
I came here because a random hedgehog approched me when I was in the garden and he started doing explosive sounds and hissing. Got curious and had to do some research. Lol

Sadly, you are wrong. This hedgehog was born in my home. I've kept and bred over 50 over the past decade. I've worked as a vet tech. All hedgehogs I kept lived over 6 years, and a few over 8 years (a record?)! They get the best care. This girl was the one and only that was always just a bit of a brat. Never once a single bite from any of my hedgehogs. They all trusted me fully, even this bratty girl.
@@Simon-oy7kf Wrong. My pet hedgehogs come from long lines of captive bred pet hedgehogs. Their great great great great great grandparents were pets in cages. It is all they know. They do not live wild in my country. They would not survive outside. The choice is keep them as pets, or, let them all die off. I choose to give them a good life. Now, wild animals should never be taken from their home and put in a cage. Only captive bred animals should be pets.
Thank you for making this vid! I know it's old but it's still very helpful being I'm dealing with a hedgie that pokes me till I bleed and hates being handled

Love these videos. We have a new hedgehog and really came into it kind of blind. She is only 10 weeks and is kind of grumpy but it's good to know that it's possible to make her easy to handle thanks!
Thank you mate. That made so much sense. As a new Hedgehog owner Mrs Pinkerton is a little on edge. We have had her only two days and I'm trying to handle her little and often to get her used to everything around her. Picking her up is like a puzzle sometimes, yes I use a towel, but I'd rather not. So yes this video has helped. I subscribed too, you have an eclectic bunch of vidz lol
I tried all these tricks, and they worked very well framing my hedgehog. He is very much more comfortable than he was before, except for the fact that he keeps biting my dad, and it draws blood.😢
I have my hedgehog's bed on the floor and she gets to run around the room and eats out of the cat's food bowls, she's 5 years old now and very social. She can still be a brat every now and then, usually though she is an adorable ball of death and hate until she wakes up.
I used to work with an education hedgehog at my zoo, and I gotta say, this is a really good video. Very easy for hedgehog owners to understand, well done! My only suggestion would be to combine the treats you mentioned with touching. It's important (as you stated) to give her treats outside her home to help her make the association between being taken out of her hab and delicious snacks/good times, but if you don't touch her during these feeding sessions she won't make an equally positive association with touching. She'll definitely come round to touching eventually with what you described, but touching will serve as a stronger secondary reinforcer (something like petting, which she doesn't need but will learn to enjoy) if you pair it on occassion with mealworms or superworms. Secondary conditioned (ie taught) reinforcers like tactile/touching should virtually always be paired with primary reinforcers at first (something an animal needs such as food) when being introduced in almost every situation. She'll be jumpy at first but will quickly realize that every time she jumps, she's having to wait longer between gorging herself on hedgehog snacks! Eventually she'll calm down and stop jumping as you touch her, as touching is now associated with very good hedgehogy things :) Thanks again for these videos, they're great for helping people learn how to enjoy their prickly (often surly) little friends!
Xtoriexs can I ask how you’re getting on with him? I bought one months ago and he’s still like this until this morning at bath time, it was a miracle for us! He was so calm and relaxed he didn’t seem to be bothered about me till I put him back in his bed then it was back to square 1 again! X
I caught 3rd one today, first 2 released to my other farms. My dog got injured So I caught them. Gave him a bath in pool. Good swimmer but it can't come out, may die , then made him familiar with dog, released at the same place where I picked it.
Hi again! Loving your videos. I ended up buying a hedgehog! Buy mine is aggressive. So strange, the first two days I had her she was alright to hold. Now she just curls up! Is this normal? She is only 6 weeks old. Going to use tips you mention in your video. My concern was she was fine the first two days then just suddenly changed
6 weeks is really too young for a hedgehog to be separated and sold. that is half the problem. keep spendning time and over the next few weeks or months he/she should calm down.
Earthling1984 hmm, that isn't good. She is eating on her own. When should she of been separated from her mother? You should do a video on what to look for and tips for buying a hedgehog. I know I and others would benefit from something like that :)
I have videos about 'before you buy a hedgehog'. I believe I mention in at least one of them the age they should be sold at. When I bred hedgehogs, I kept them with mother till 8 weeks, then at 8 weeks kept the boys together separate from the females who were also kept with the mom till 12 weeks, then sold.
reabo Honestly 6-8 weeks is fine. Don't worry about it. Just give her lots of love. Our hedgehog was the same way, we got her just under 7 weeks and she was very friendly and excited the first day she got to our new home, but then got very defensive and frightened for a couple weeks after. That's normal. Be sure to take her out at least once a day! You can start with shorter sessions, then longer and longer as you go. If she hisses/pops/clicks when you take her out, resist the urge to put her back in!!! If you always put her back in when she does that, she'll start to associate that behavior with getting put back in her "safe zone" before she can even learn that you don't want to hurt her, so she'll hiss and pop all the time. Let her settle down in your hands and be very still for a while, letting her sniff around to get used to you. When she's perfectly calm, you can put her back in her cage whenever you wish.
Brennan Spicer Thanks alot Brennan. She is definitely getting better now. In the middle of trying to litter train (if it's even possible). Did a bit more research too and you right that 6-8 weeks is fine also. The woman that I bought her off is a breeder so I guess she knows what she is doing. Everyone seems to have their on own preferences when a baby hog should leave its mum. Which I found interesting
Hey man I was reading the comments and there are a lot of negative people so I wanted to be the first to say thanks for your advice I just bought a hedgehog and he’s been a little brat so I’m slowly working with him. Keep up the great work brother oh and I Subscribed
I’ve got a hedgehog I’ve had for two years, I take him out on the daily and hold him in my hands but he’s still grouchy and scared of lots. I now understand I haven’t been spending enough or the right time with it, and I need to work harder to make sure its remaining years are worth living for. Thank you
I'm not an expert on hedgehogs but your hedgehog is lacking a decent amount of space for a cage, not to mention the wheel, hedgehogs need to exercise, cuz that's what they would do in the wild they are running all the time, or at least they walk a lot. I'm not sure if it's ok for her to be butting that cardboard house, but u should prevent that anyway
+Earthling1984 I'm not trying to shade you or Sth I'm just saying you should have a larger enclosure for your hedgehog as a well as a wheel, it's important for them to exercise, you can try connecting two bin cages to gain some space, the rest is good , your video is really helpful
He is 100% right though. You don't have a wheel, they run miles on the wheel. It also helps with their attitude. Secondly, Aspen is bad for hedgehogs. It can carry mites and it has wood dust. You are giving hedgehog advice. Yet you're not properly taking care of that one.
+Zomkay Aspen is not bad. I have used aspen o er 10 years with over 50 hedgehogs. Not a single illness in my hogs and never once mites. Sorry, you are wrong. I find aspen to be best bedding choice from my tons of experience.
+Earthling1984 Thanks for the video when I get a hedgehog and its mean I will do the step and question when u buy or get a hedgehog is there a chance u can get a nice one?
Got my first pet, new hedgehog owner. I watched almost all your videos, they were extremely helpful. Also asked a lot of questions and did quite a bit of research. I'm onto about month 5 with my little bud. I have a male hedgehog. I try to take him out everyday, he's just SOOO scared. Not angry, just very scared. Even little noises scare him and I feel bad. Plus, I'm never able to fully hold him without a towel, because he has abnormally sharp and thick quills. I love him so death and take super good care of him. Any more tips you could offer? I haven't put a shirt in his cage for my smell yet either. I could try though.
+dizzyallaround96 Don't get scared holding him without a towel. The spikes won't penetrate you skin. It's like holding a cactus. It'll make your hands felt like it penetrated because he anointed his spikes. But it's not anything bloody and dangerous. When I wanted to hold my hedgie for the first time and search the internet on how to do it. The internet said exactly "JUST DO IT!" and I just did it. And I was able to hold him. lol
I have found this very useful thank you. I have just got a hedgehog and he is pretty much hissing at the moment, so I am leaving him for a few days to settle in and will then handle him. It's a big change for him from his previous owners to me now. I find all your videos pratical and informative. Many thanks .
LOL. How the heck did she poop on the SIDE of the box? What did she just press her butt up against the side or something? THATS A LOT! This hedgehog must have been REALLY freaking out before you made this video. I also like that Pavlov "treats for being taken out of your cage" method- that's pretty "Why didn't I think about that first" sort of deal. I don't own a hedgehog, but that'd be good for ANY sort of pet that has a cage.
Домик ежа не очень уютный без специального пластикового домика - но зато это компенсируется свободой ходить по дому, которую вы предоставляете Вашему ёжику. И это радует. Мы рады за него
Well this is very much helpful but how do you keep a hedgehog to stop pooping on you like mine she will poop when I hold her or when she is out of the cage and I don't want this to happen anymore.
I'm so glad I found this video! I bought a new hedgehog yesterday, and she was jumping when I was feeding her. I can't wait to pick her up now! I am excited to have a new spiky friend
My hedgehog snuggled into me all cutely--peed and pooped on me, then bit me ._. two minutes later, snuggles xD He's a weird little thing. Also, is it possible to be allergic to the quill pricks?
Our hedgehog Chaos bites you and tries to drag us or whatever he bites with him. LOL Even when they're nervous they are great pets if you're willing to care for them and put in the work!
I had a hedgehog that was always aggressive when I picked her up, that never went away, but once I had her she would rub her nose against mine and loved to curl up with me on the couch and watch tv for hours. I think it's just being in the air that scares them.
holy shit man, you gave me a fcking courage, thanks man im so scared everytime he hiss, but after i touch my hh, it doesnt hurt that much once u lift him/her, thank god man i found ur video, ur a real man and a real life saver lol! thankyou really godbless you always sir!
Hedgehog quills aren’t even that painful, i just roll them on their back right onto my hand, like a bed of nails it won’t skewer you because of the surface area of quills being evenly distributed on your hand.
Hedgehogs actually bite because they like salty things, like salt licks, and the sweat on your hands makes them want to lick and bite it. Try washing your hands before handling a hedgehog or rubbing your hand on anything made of leather to get the sweat off your hands
Yes I I got her 2 days ago she's 2 years old and I didn't get to hold her my parents got her for me as a surprise. And the previous owners said that she never bite anybody before. But every time I touch her she seems happy and her quills are down she's not hissing or jumping but she bites me every time I hold her and I have tried almost everything to get her to stop. And I still bond with her but I wear gloves.
@@earthling1984 oh wow, that is very impressive. Also you sounded like a dude who knew what he was talking about! Congrats on all those achievements and thank you! ❤️
I watched this video 2 years ago when I got a male hedgehog. Mine was pretty much like the one in the video. I can't let it loose around me because I figured my cats would bother him and get him even more scared, so I took the habit of closing the bedroom door where his viv is and interacting with him for about 15 to 20 minutes everyday. He tolerates me a lot more today, but I can't say he's become more sociable. He hisses most of the times I stroke him and is always looking for a dark place to hide. If I hold him he will try to jump away, and if I hold him with the belly up he flails desperately. It's still a pretty cool pet to have, but I envy those owners whose hedgehogs play around, calmly take a bath etc. Also my hedgehog lost all his teeth somehow and now eats only wet food.
Glad to hear you interact often. Weird he lost all his teeth. Even my hedgehogs that lived over 8 years had all teeth still. Did you feed wet food often? I always fed dry food.
@@earthling1984 I always fed him dry food. Then one day I noticed that when he was anointing with my hand's scent he couldn't grab anymore and it was just gums. Then I noticed that he wasn't eating much if his food, so I started soaking his dry food in wet food broth. He's doing fine but I wish I knew what caused this.
Hedgehogs are cute! I got to hold one in my hands (by the spikes, mind,) but it didn't hurt! One of the calmest and FIRST live hedgehog I ever saw! :) Spines aren't as prickly like a porcupine or cactus! NEVER touch the latter, no matter how curious you get! Trust me! :)

This 11yo video is helping my Hedgie become more tame 🙏🏻
Thank you mate.
That made so much sense.
As a new Hedgehog owner Mrs Pinkerton is a little on edge.
We have had her only two days and I'm trying to handle her little and often to get her used to everything around her. Picking her up is like a puzzle sometimes, yes I use a towel, but I'd rather not.
So yes this video has helped.
I subscribed too, you have an eclectic bunch of vidz lol
Glad to help. Good luck with Mrs Pinkerton :)
I tried all these tricks, and they worked very well framing my hedgehog. He is very much more comfortable than he was before, except for the fact that he keeps biting my dad, and it draws blood.😢
I’ve tried absolutely everything but my hedgehog stubbornly refuses to exist.
I have my hedgehog's bed on the floor and she gets to run around the room and eats out of the cat's food bowls, she's 5 years old now and very social. She can still be a brat every now and then, usually though she is an adorable ball of death and hate until she wakes up.
Does the hedgehog poop on the floor at all? Or do you have a litter? Cuz I know they love to poop as they run around
Hey dude! I just had my first hedgehog this day and i know you're the sensei when it comes to handling them!
Eventually she'll calm down and stop jumping as you touch her, as touching is now associated with very good hedgehogy things :)
Thanks again for these videos, they're great for helping people learn how to enjoy their prickly (often surly) little friends!
She's mean cause she's not with sonic

Thank you! I just got hedgehog tday. And he hiss when I tryna pick him up. I try my best to pick him up. Thank you
Xtoriexs can I ask how you’re getting on with him? I bought one months ago and he’s still like this until this morning at bath time, it was a miracle for us! He was so calm and relaxed he didn’t seem to be bothered about me till I put him back in his bed then it was back to square 1 again! X
I caught 3rd one today, first 2 released to my other farms. My dog got injured So I caught them. Gave him a bath in pool. Good swimmer but it can't come out, may die , then made him familiar with dog, released at the same place where I picked it.
mine hiss too, already 2 days since i got it, but ill do my best too! 😂
Jonathan gnz I got mine today and she hates being handeled
Aw how cute. And idk why YT recommended this to me now, but I appreciate it.
Earthling1984
hmm, that isn't good.
When I bred hedgehogs, I kept them with mother till 8 weeks, then at 8 weeks kept the boys together separate from the females who were also kept with the mom till 12 weeks, then sold.
reabo
Honestly 6-8 weeks is fine.
Brennan Spicer
Thanks alot Brennan.
Smiling the whole time watching the hedgehog on the chair. 😁😁😁
Thank you
When I was younger I once kept a hedgehog in my hands and it was beutiful
I'm not an expert on hedgehogs but your hedgehog is lacking a decent amount of space for a cage, not to mention the wheel, hedgehogs need to exercise, cuz that's what they would do in the wild they are running all the time, or at least they walk a lot. I'm not sure if it's ok for her to be butting that cardboard house, but u should prevent that anyway
Like you began with, "I (you) are not expert". Should leave it there.
+Earthling1984 I'm not trying to shade you or Sth I'm just saying you should have a larger enclosure for your hedgehog as a well as a wheel, it's important for them to exercise, you can try connecting two bin cages to gain some space, the rest is good , your video is really helpful
+mariacasas011 it's just a friendly advise, and it's for the hedgehog well being
He is 100% right though.
"How to Handle & Tame a mean / aggressive / scared hedgehog" Finally. The how to video we've all been asking for. /s
After 13 years, UA-cam desided to show me this video even I'm don't have a hedgehog.
wow this has changed my life. Very important watch for all.
Thank you for making this video its very helpful for hedgehog owners
+Davegabriel Eleazar Thanks for the kind comment :)
+Earthling1984 Welcome
+Earthling1984 Thanks for the video when I get a hedgehog and its mean I will do the step and question when u buy or get a hedgehog is there a chance u can get a nice one?
yes, all hedgehogs I sold were sweethearts. Just need to find good breeder and handle before buying. Don't buy one you can't handle in the store.
+Earthling1984 Ok thx for the facts
IT SHAT ON THE WALL!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
she's cute! just like you are. :) and I'm glad you love her and work with her.
I am trying to find a blue hedgehog where do I buy one?
try your local gamestop :)
Mine is currently around 6 months and was barley held so she is very scared/mean so I’m working with her! I got her yesterday and her name is Kairi
Ou kjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj.
And I was able to hold him. lol
Mind if I ask how he is doing? Not even sure if you still use this account :o
Dizzyallaround do you still have one? How much do they cost?
Damn you get hot chicks begging you for information? I need to get a hedgehog.
I have found this very useful thank you. I have just got a hedgehog and he is pretty much hissing at the moment, so I am leaving him for a few days to settle in and will then handle him. It's a big change for him from his previous owners to me now. I find all your videos pratical and informative. Many thanks .
I don't ever planning on owning a hedgehog. And yet a watched this
My wife's hedgehog, Frank, likes to take his morning dumps on top of his house and only there. They are spiteful mini human shits as well.
He just forgot to change the living space before he hit record.
Oh my gosh. Thank you so much.
Instructions unclear hedgehog rolling around at the speed of sound
Домик ежа не очень уютный без специального пластикового домика - но зато это компенсируется свободой ходить по дому, которую вы предоставляете Вашему ёжику. И это радует. Мы рады за него
My hedgehog poo or pee whenever I let him out from his cage.. 🌚
I know feed him chili dogs he not himself when he’s hungry
Well this is very much helpful but how do you keep a hedgehog to stop pooping on you like mine she will poop when I hold her or when she is out of the cage and I don't want this to happen anymore.
"Wow! She pooped on the side of that"
This wasn’t it my recommended I fucking looked for this Gem.
I just got a baby male and oh boy, he is feisty. LoL. This really helped. Thanks.
Yes sir, irritated for about 15 min afterwards.
that's happening with me for atleast three years...
godricrandom Nothing's happening with me. Is there something wrong with me?
Oh. Hahaha.
***** Haha
I want a hedgehog so much.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaw seems like you got Amy rose the hedgehog there
My hedgehog hates me
Hedgehog quills aren’t even that painful, i just roll them on their back right onto my hand, like a bed of nails it won’t skewer you because of the surface area of quills being evenly distributed on your hand.
My hedgehog bite me a million times starting to think he don't like me
It's because you're a Nintendo/Xbox/Sony (Anything not Sega) fanboy.
Hedgehogs actually bite because they like salty things, like salt licks, and the sweat on your hands makes them want to lick and bite it. Try washing your hands before handling a hedgehog or rubbing your hand on anything made of leather to get the sweat off your hands
lol. ya think?
my hedgehog bites me non stop AND it draws blood.....help..........!!!!!!!!!!!
How long have you had your hedgehog? How old is your hedgehog? Where did you get your hedgehog from? Did you handle before buying?
Ella Jett Barton Well???
Yes I I got her 2 days ago she's 2 years old and I didn't get to hold her my parents got her for me as a surprise. And the previous owners said that she never bite anybody before. But every time I touch her she seems happy and her quills are down she's not hissing or jumping but she bites me every time I hold her and I have tried almost everything to get her to stop. And I still bond with her but I wear gloves.
Earthling1984 ^
And it draws a lot of blood
She is so cute😂💗
im a first time hedgehog owner and this 12yo video is more helpful than any new ones
I did keep and bred over 50 hedgehogs. I also worked as a vet tech in the past. If you have any questions send them my way :)
@@earthling1984 oh wow, that is very impressive. Also you sounded like a dude who knew what he was talking about! Congrats on all those achievements and thank you! ❤️
Aaand it's come around another 2 years later,, definitely not mad :))
Him: They will jump off
Me: Oh so hedgie suicide
😂😂
I don't have a pet Hedgehog, but i have wild ones that come in my garden for a bath, a drink and they keep my lawn clear of slugs.
Trust me! :)
Is she still Alive after 8 years 😗
This one lived 7 years.
@@earthling1984 awh 😭
they dont live so long, wild ones get 4-5 years if lucky maybe
I remember watching this at 8 yrs old
Now I have a hedgehog
can you tell me what its food
Hedgehog formula
yesterday i catch one but i dont understand today i give him chiken and she eat
@@shafiqurrehman3201 but the person who sold it to me said cat food
@@Koiiru0-0 catfood is healthier then hedgehog food as most (MOST) have alot of extra stuff that isnt great for them
