How to Bond and Build Trust with your Hedgehog | Belly Rubs (Tutorial)

  • The number one question that people ask me is how I’m able to belly rub my hedgehogs Mr.Pokee and Herbee. Bonding with your pet hedgehog is super important, because hedgehogs can be amazing and cute pets as soon as they trust us. But hedgehogs are naturally shy animals and can be quite grumpy. Some are nicer than others because they are already much more used to being handled.
    In this tutorial I will explain to you what I do to gain your hedgehogs trust and show you in detail how YOU can bond with your hedgehogs.

    I love this video. I had a hedgehog named Pickle. I loved her more than anything. She died about 5 months ago and I still cry whenever I think about losing her. She had a uterine tumor that ruptured. We rushed her to the vet and thought she was going to be okay when we brought her home, but she deteriorated fast and died later that night. The exotics vet had originally said that getting small animals like hedgehogs spayed is really risky, but if she'd been spayed, she might still be with me today. It makes me so sad to think about. I have a new hedgehog now. He'll never replace Pickle - she was very friendly and sweet and had hilarious antics. The new hedgehog is cute in his own way, but he's very shy and I haven't bonded with him in the same way yet. His name is Pepper and at least he helps keep my mind off Pickle somewhat by letting me keep my routine of feeding, cleaning, and holding a hedgie at night.

    • @Nevz00
      @Nevz00 Рік тому +5

      Ashley, Pickle left knowing she was loved and cared for by a kind soul as you. Honestly, that's the best gift you can ever give to Pickle ❤️

    • @23phoenixash
      @23phoenixash Рік тому +3

      @@Nevz00 Thank you. I do think I gave her a good life, but I still feel guilty that we couldn't save her. She trusted me and I remember how she looked at me on that last day, but there was nothing I could really do at that point. I don't know whether I'll get my next female hedgie spayed, but I don't want something like that to happen ever again. Pepper is super timid and I still haven't bonded with him in the same way, but I'm going to introduce him to my partner's girl hedgie soon, so hopefully we'll have some hedgie babies :)

    • @Nevz00
      @Nevz00 Рік тому

      It's normal to blame oneself when unexpected things happen, but hey though Pickle is no longer here, she knows that you were there for her ❤️ The part where she looked at you was her admiring you for everything you have done.
      Good luck with Pepper! HE is about to enjoy a great life with you.

    • @Avlysh
      @Avlysh Місяць тому

      any progress with the shy hedgehog? i just got a new hedgehog(first one) and wonder how much bonding progress i can expect. she isnt totally shy, but i can not hold her on the back. iknow usually hedgies dont like it, but it would be a bonding goal if she could get to tolerate it and i could handle her like the hedgehog in the video on the back

    • @23phoenixash
      @23phoenixash Місяць тому

      @@Avlysh Unfortunately, he's still pretty shy and gets crabby when I touch him. I hold him every night with his house on my chest and him lying down inside it. He gets excited when I feed him and he often lays pretty mellow with me as long as he's in his house and I don't touch him too much. He's really cute and I love him, but I've had to just accept that he's not as friendly as Pickle was. In general, I don't think hedgehogs like being held on their backs for more than a few seconds. I think they probably feel defenseless in that position since they can't hunker down behind their spikes if they need to, so it might be just instinct to be in a more defensible position. Anyway, a small update on Pepper is that I did put him with a girl hedgie to try to breed the two of them (was my first attempt) and they seemed to like each other but it didn't look like they were doing anything. However, I didn't watch them 100% of the time and one day, while cleaning the girl, I discovered we had 3 babies! One of the babies is a chubby girl named Molly and she is SUPER friendly and she'll lay right on my chest, curl up and fall asleep. So, we have a sweet little hedgie family now and I've developed a lot stronger bond with Molly on account of her seeming to trust me more. I hold all the hedgies every single day and I love them all for their unique personalities. No regrets, but of course I do still miss Pickle every single day and I still cry sometimes when I think about her. I don't think that will ever change. Good luck though with your hedgies and if you get yours to be more comfortable being held on its back, let me know.

    This is all solid advice. Adorable hog, happy to subscribe :)
    I do also completely agree on the singing. I'm a distinctively average singer, but my little guy will just relax and "flatten" himself on my chest/tummy and fall asleep within minutes. Whenever we have music on the TV, he will actively pay attention to it, basically just sits on my all attentive, like a parrot :)
    Also good advise regarding not approaching from the top. If my wife has our hedgehog on her lap and I go to say kiss her, my hedgehog will just prickle up and huff instinctively. He relaxes pretty quick once he knows it's me but still...
    My hedgehog isn't massive on belly rubs despite being pretty domesticated. Instead it's like playing with a dog, and I will tickle and play fight with him and he will use his paws to defend himself - never balling up, he's not really defending himself - and it's good fun. It might just be the way we trained him to associate that with playtime mind, but after 18m there's no turning back now :)

    Oh my god, he's so precious!!!!! I have to say, it worried me a little seeing u holding him so loosely while standing up like that. I'm sure ur very careful, but it looked like he could've fallen at times, and from that height could really hurt him, although I know u know that. I was hoping u would give a warning about how even tho ur doing it in the video, people shouldn't hold them high up unless u have them very secure, and people shouldn't just let them be so "free" while up high. Most hedgehogs are uncomfortable without secure footing, unless held securely, anyway. YOU may be experienced enough to know exactly what ur doing, but in general people shouldn't do that, it's not worth risking serious harm to the little cuties. Other than that, I love ur video, and love ur little baby!

    Suuuper video!! Ich hab mich schon voll drauf gefreut und bin so happy, dass du es wirklich gemacht hast!🥰
    Ich hab eine kleine Frage, die vielleicht ein bisschen dumm ist, aber egal. Immer wenn ich mit meinem Igel einfach Zeit verbringe, darf er auf meinem Bett rumflitzen (finde andere vielleicht ekelhaft, aber mich stört das nicht), aber ich habe immer soo Angst, dass er runterfällt, weil es halt relativ hoch ist.
    Du wirktest in dem Video gar nicht so als wäre das überhaupt ein Risiko, deshalb frag ich mich ob ich zu paranoid bin, oder mein Igel einfach zu tollpatschig ist, sodass ich mir sorgen machen muss😂.
    Deshalb die Frage: ist einer deiner Igel schon mal vom Sofa runtergefallen oder ähnliches oder musst du dir da wirklich gar keine Sorgen machen und ich sollte mich einfach nur weniger pingelig anstellen?
    Ich weiß es ist schwer sowas über fremde Igel zu beantworten, aber es ist mein erster Igel und ich habe ihn noch nicht lange und du hast ja schon ein ganz schönes bisschen mehr Erfahrung mit den Mäuschen, also kannst du mir vielleicht ja ein bisschen weiterhelfen.
    Vielen Dank für das tolle Video nochmal🥰

      Emily :3 Dankeschön 🥰 also meistens checken Igel erstmal ab, wo sie am ehesten nach unten kommen und wählen dann immer denselben Spot aus :) Wenn du weißt wo das ist, kannst du dich gezielt so hinlegen, dass er nicht springt!! Aber ich passe schon auch immer so mit einem Auge halb auf, dass nichts passiert!! Oder du legst dich halt stattdessen auf den Boden und schaust dass da nichts gefährliches rumliegt :)

      Its because they have no depth perception. Her cage setup is not safe either. Hedgehogs should not be given the opportunity to climb, 2 story cages that do not have tall walls around the 2nd story and ramps can cause harm to your hedgie!
