  • We got our new Mysterium-X sensor upgrade to our Red One camera last week and wanted to give it a bit of a torture test. So on Friday night myself, Ivan Kovac, James Okubo and a model, Valeria, headed down to Yoyogi Park at nighttime to make a little commercial for our new sensor to show just how good it was.
Needless to say, I was utterly blown away! What you are about to see was shot at ISO3200 at T1.9, 1/50th shutter 23.976fps. It was lit by a solitary candle and one of the park's path lights about twenty meters away (just to give the trees a bit of depth).
The latitude and dynamic range of Mysterium-X is, quite frankly, astonishing! And what tiny amount of noise there is at ISO3200 is random and visually pleasing, like film grain. Not to mention the colour and highlight reproduction! This small demonstration has both the darkest blacks and brightest highlights (from the candle) and it handles both ends with amazing finesse!
There is no colour correction done to this clip at all, in order to show you what the footage looks like directly off the sensor.
It was edited entirely in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 (including the audio mixing) using the new Red3 Importer plugin, online using the 4.5K R3Ds.
Make sure you play this back on a calibrated monitor and on a high fidelity audio system as there's some wicked bass in the mix ;)

@PerfectMoviecom the best bass sound you get from Trillian. The best synth sounds from Omnisphere. Both are from Spectrasonics. Avatar movie soundtrack was made with Omnisphere as well as Matrix, Star Trek, Titanic, green Latern, Mission Impossible... ... ...

@ipublica, it's unmatched when you are talking similar cameras on it's level and cost scale, but it can't compare to the low light capabilites of the Nikon d3s and the Canon 1d mark iv.

@PerfectMoviecom I mixed the audio myself from basic sound effect elements I have access to. Before I was a director and cinematographer I used to do audio recording and post-production design :)
    Cheers for the feedback!

Hey guys, check out my new camera test in the guise of a short film called Silent Hill: Stolen Heart (click on my username to watch) and let me know what you think! Shot in what I would consider to be a MAJOR inspiration for the Silent Hill game developers - an abandoned mining town in Japan!
    Hope you like it :)
