- If Steven Biggs could grow only one flower, he would choose Brugmansia, a wondrously fragrant, exotic-looking tropical plant with trumpet-shaped flowers often as long as a wine bottle. It's extravagant, it's voluptuous, it's flamboyant-and this tropical beauty never fails to elicit cooing from visitors. Also known as Angel's Trumpet, it's equally at home as a garden centrepiece, container-bound patio sentry, or in the flower border. In this talk, learn how to grow and overwinter tropical Brugmansia (and its cousin the Datura) in our temperate climate. Steven Biggs is an award-winning food & garden writer. He gave this presentation at Richters on February 2, 2014.

Steve, great session! Thanks for repeating the audience questions so we at home could hear what they were asking. Was rapt the entire hour, nice. We too are an 8 and enjoy easy growing Angel Trumpets. Oregon, USA
I can't imagine a better forum on brugmansia. I just purchased my first plant and after seeing your talk something tells me it's going to be a love affair :)
Google
Best video on the internet about brugmansia!!!
he's not kidding about them being addictive
I have watched many videos on Brugmansia, and this, by far is the absolute best! It’s the only one that answered my question about how to prune the young Brugmansia plant into the desired shape. Thank you, thank you thank you!
Greetings from another Brugmansia lover !
I live in south Georgia and hummingbirds love my Angel Trumpet! I also leave it out during the winter. I cut it all the way down to like 6" in the spring and by summer its over 6 ft with dozens of blooms all season. Besides fertilizing it and watering it, I only enjoy it! First year it never grew more than a foot and had 1 bloom. Then a hurriciane came the 2nd year and it grew to over 6 feet and I had several blooms -- from this I learned I wasn't watering it enough! Now, its 3rd year, it has 3 trunks and dozens of blooms from spring (April) through to the end of November. I am excited to try and create new plants from this one this year.
I spent years trying to figure out what the potted tree in my grandma's house name was. I took it outside this summer, replanted it in the biggest flower pot possible, then gave it some plant food. Around a week later, it had a 12 inch white flower dangling from a limb. I spent that night trying to look it up and FINALLY... I found it. I have no clue where she got this plant, but she had it for years. Now that I know what it is and how to treat it, this should be a nice adventure.
Beautiful !! Really enjoyed your talk and pictures .
Hello I have two brugmansia. They are beautiful. I live in Northern CA. Last year I left mine in the pots in the garden. Our weather gets down to 50 degrees in the winter. I haven’t had any problem leaving them outside in the garden year round. I love this plant. I’m sure it’s one of God’s favorite. Thank you 🙏🏾
Started Red and yellow Brug, I've got the Brugmansia fever too!Good video
Really good information, I'm just starting out with my Angel Trumpet. Thanks so much.
i just bought 2 live brugmansia sanguinea! years of searching finally paid off! yeah brugmansia!
Hello from Sweden!
Thank you for sharing!
My brugmansia took 9 months to go from a little 5 inch rooted cutting to 3.5 foot flowering plant. Of course we're in a Northern CA zone 9b climate and I didn't force dormancy in the winter. In the winter I simply brought in at night and put it outside in the sun every morning. Though the bugs/mites were worse in the late winter
OMG I love Steven just as much as I love my Brugmansia.I live in Australia and grow them in the ground.I have Yellow,White,Red.Great video.
Ronda Boone
Love your video!! I learned a lot!! Thank you!
An absolutely fabulous seminar! I live in Western Australia so I hope I can obtain a plant & maybe as the temperature never gets to freezing, I can leave it outside for the whole year. My fig tree is fine growing outside all year. Many thanks, cheers 🥰👍🏻
Hummingbirds love mine. It is so fun to watch them go up inside.
Last year I started both Datura and Brugmansia seeds. I discarded the Datura when I learned how poisonous they can be to animals and wildlife But I kept working with the Brugmansia. These explanations were very, very helpful in helping me understand why it is much harder to start the Angel's Trumpet. Thank you! I've tried soaking them in a mixture of water and peroxide, and have had some success but not the rate I hoped. I will try clipping the remaining seeds I haven't started. Really appreciated the way you slowly explained things and considered everyone's questions. You are a good teacher!
Love listening to this guy’s voice!!😊
Me too
Very informative! Thank you!
Nice video bro, a wonderfull plant
Omg the people are so rude asking questions through the entire seminar, just let him talk. This was a pretty informative video, I might have to growing brugmansia now! I love Steve Biggs, he's a great gardener and knows his stuff!
A seminar is geared for you to ask questions, that's how they learn by getting their questions answered.
Zone 8a. Houston TX usa... gardening year around ;)
I love this ..my brugmansia is on my driveway. Lol
Thank you very much ❤️
I live in Washington state and have been growing these for years. I have a Charles grimaldi a apricot queen and a painted pink lady. My Charles grimaldi and apricot queen are over 7 feet tall and have over 200 flowers when fully bloomed my painted pink lady is over 12 feet tall and had well over 200 flowers when fully bloomed. I had them in the backyard but decided to them in the front yard next thing I knew people came up to and asked me if the could take pictures of them and send them to their friends slot of people had never seen them or didn't even no what they were. I plan to add another plant to my collection this year and will keep you posted.
Thank you Steven Biggs. Your video was inspirational. .
I was just given a tree (5ft), and two small Brugmansia. I've yet to see them bloom, but I look forward to enjoying the blooms.
Any recommendations for my location (s.w.Washington State) ?
Cool, cool.
ok thank you so much
I've had 2 yellow ones for over 5 years, I just bring them in over the winter and treat them like any house plant.
I liked your presentation very much. I have/had six or seven on a small south facing patio in Vancouver. They were awesome for the whole summer. When the weather changed in the fall I didn't really know what to do. I can't bring them in cuz there is no room. So I put them under an eve so they wouldn't drown with wet coast rain, and only today decided to check them. a few seem to still have some woodiness but some seem rotten. I guess they might not have made it through the winter. I was watching a youtube video and the gardener chopped the whole plant off at the ground (I didnt want to do that in the fall) but I have been thinking that the plant cant grow through the dead wood so decided to chop it to the ground. will a new plant grow from the root ball do you think?
Hai Steve nice to watch your brugmansia flower .l love it so much .l only have to colour purple and white .l love your colour pink and yellow .l am from Malaysia .
I have my first 3 coming in soon! A pink, a white, and a yellow.
Enjoy!
Hi. I have one brugmansia that I finally saved up for and purchased two years ago . After watching your care video I now look forward to seeing it this year, finally gain some height. I've realised I hadn't watered or fed it as much as I should have done. I also noticed when I purchased it, it was peach in colour and over the years turned white. I'm guessing that this was also due to me underfeeding? I'm off out now to take cuttings and a photograph today and then again at the end of our English summer. Thanks Steven you answered everything I needed to know. Ya here I go!!!!
+Gaynor Firth Hi Gaynor. We asked Steven Biggs, the speaker to comment: "Wishing you lots of flowers! Brugmansia like lots of water and lots of food. Underfeeding will certainly affect growth and can affect leaf colour, although I don’t know if that is what is causing the change in flower colour that you describe. I find flower colour often changes between when a flower first opens, and when it is done. For example, I have one plant with flowers that are a very light yellow upon first opening, but which darken considerably by the time they are done."
Fantastic video, thank you! I'm now on my way to rejuvenating my underwatered, underfed Brugmansia collection, the smaller pot inside bigger pot tip is a godsend. I look forward to seeing some flowers on my Suaveolens, that have failed to show their colours for years.
Glad you found the video useful. May your plants reward you with flowers soon.
I'd like coming to these pages but what I don't like is not getting straight to the point. I have one of these trees on my deck and it comes back every yearI bring it in and I sit it in my dining room next to the deck windows so we can still get sunlight, and that's all I do when spring comes I take it back out on the deck and it starts growing again. It's not very hard to learn how to take care of one I guess it depends on where you live
Mano Hi Steve I have orange pink and white I always get fruits and seeds angels trumpet growing in the tropical country call Canada (Toronto )cold zone 4 almost 15 plants I have them l love them the aroma even more i love it.thanks good explanation well done.
Do you bring them in for the winter?
Why do u find it so rewarding?!
hi I left my plant in the greenhouse in winter and the steam went purple. I cut the old wood off above the purple. I live in the North West of England have I killed it?
Why do u find it so rewarding
Hello I got my seeds(5) yesterday. I live in St, Louis, MO. What to do? Want flowers next summer.
Hi again I do have a question. I got my two burgneneia last summer at a farmers market. They were about three feet tall and now they’re over six feet tall. Both plants have four tall branches with large leaves. Should I cut some of the branches off? The branches are thick. I’ve already cut all lower leaves off. I have both plants in 25 gallon pots. Let me know what you think. Thank you 😊
Steve - What fertilizer do you use to fertilize the plant?
been growing some for years, lost a couple favorites haven't been able to replace. Have currently a generic salmon one, and a variegated one (this 1 has not bloomed). Used to have a nice white one that did have a vanilla scent, and also had a nice yellow that actually had a lemon scent, really want to acquire replacements of those. Anyone know a good mail order source (east coast US here)
Hi Steve, Love your video, very informative and educational. I live in NYC, would the brugmansia survive the winter? Thanks
Not outside. You have to bring them in over winter. Brugmansia is hardy in zones 9-11+, whereas NYC is zone 6.
@@richtersherbs thank you very much for your reply. Appreciated truly!
Hi, was wondering why my Trumpet, in its second year now, is growing fine but some of the branches are thick but kind of gummy and cannot support their weight. these branches (only 3) have grown rapidly and they are now droopy and need to support them. Why does this happen? thanks
Do the Brugmansia grow well if air pruning?
ill try to answer the question about "how much do they (kids) have to ingest?" (to be poisoned or drugged i imagine). from what ive heard about Datura is its almost impossible to guess the alkaloid content of the plant/seeds, so you cant really answer with a solid number or weight. So one seed could have 3 times the alkaloids than the seed next to it has. please correct me if im wrong, but thats what I remember from the little research i did on Datura.
💕💕💕beautiful , where is this growing?would it grow in the UK? Thank you💕💚🌳
LYN LOVES JESUS mine grow in the uk, in the south x
Thanks for posting this video. I just moved into our home and the previous owner left two 8 ft brugmansia plants behind. We live in Virginia and the winter cold temps were down to the 20s for a few weeks in January. Is there any hope for reviving them?
+kris777 It's highly unlikely that they will come back. But before you dig them up give them a month or so to revive in spring. If they do come back, mostly like it will be from the roots.
+Richters Herbs believe it or not my plants survived!!! They did come back from the roots like you said. One is almost full height as last summer. The other is just peeking through the soil but trying just as well. I will be ready for winter this time. Thanks for this great video!
I'm so glad I kept scrolling through these comments because my neighbor moved and left all of them for the lady that moved in and she really did not want all of the work. I admired and fell in love with them because I would open my kitchen window and the beautiful smell would flow through my window. So I asked her if she would not mind giving them too me so my son dug some up and I had two in the pots. one pot I bought inside and now it's growing leaves but I still have about 4 outside. I'm praying they come back. So thank you for your reply.
I live in Washington state I have 6 angel trumpets witch I am proudly to say bloom every year the best fertilizer I have found to is miracle grow tomato fertilizer use the large side of the spoon witch comes with the box and add one scoop to a gallon and fertilize every two weeks
Do you grow them in the ground unprotected from frost?
when the brugs are in pots can you put manure as a top coat? Or would that burn them? Or do you suggest putting manure within the mix of miracle grow plant mix and bark mulch on the top to keep the soil moist so it doesn't dry out as fast?
+Andrea Wischniowski - Fortkamp If the manure is well-rotted it is okay to add it as a thin top-layer. The problem with burning occurs when manure is not well-rotted or composted and the excess nitrogen burns the roots. You can either apply it as a top-dressing to an already potted up plant or mix it into your potting medium if you are re-potting your plant. Top-dressing of either manure or bark mulch will help to keep soil moist but manure will break down sooner.
I grow these in Washington state where we get cold temps. Difference is I grow them in pots and have them grow over 7 feet tall
Do you keep them indoors in winter?
I found a large horn-worm on my burgmansia I couldnt get it off and I ended up by cutting off the branch. is this a regular problem or something out of the ordinary? I've never had this issue before, there is a passion fruit plant next to it, if that makes a difference
Seems like the video got over right when Steve was gonna explain why he likes using plastic pots 14 inches across I was wondering the reasons why?
I don't have compost or expensive fertilizer, I'm retired with limited space and can only container plant.
I have coffee grounds, epsom salt, egg shells and fish fertilizer will these 4 components promote growth and blooms ?
In Greensboro, NC Can You Cut It To The Ground And Cover It With Mulch And Fall Leaves Will It Come Back?
North Carolina is mostly in zones 7 and 8, while Brugmansia is hardy down to zone 9. Normally it would not be expected to survive winter outdoors. Some winters you may have luck by protecting your plant as you suggest, but in a cold winter you could lose your it.
That guy still needs to learn a lot more about Brugmansias. First of all the blooms don't last only one day! On mine flushes of blooms last for week or even longer. And even when it's really hot they still last for a few days. Also growing brugmansia from seed is not that practiced because they don't end up blooming like the mother plant most of the times they turn out white. Only hard working hybridizers usually grow from seed of which they have pollinated to try and creat new hybrids but every seed is different so you need to plant tons of seeds and once they are big blooming plants they take up a lot of space and not to mention the work to get them to that stage. Then they hope that from all those hundreds of plants they get a new hybrid.
JesseOrtiz wow you know a lot about the brugmansia! Wished that I read your comment before buying seeds.....lol
A friend has given me a seed head...I planted the seeds...its two months on, I have a purple trumpet flower on each plant! Unbelievable.
Hi Steve, could you send me a link to a brugmansia pruning video? I’m at my wits end been searching for 2 hours. I have no idea what branches need to come off which ones to keep, pruning angel....
I am in the same position. I need to prune mine.
Brugmansias are very forgiving when pruned. All you need to know is they only flower after it’s trunk/branch splits and makes a Y. To guarantee you’ll always have flowers don’t cut below to lowest Y. The growth points/ buds are extremely visible on these plants. Always pale colored circles along the stems, make your cut right above one of those notches and shape it any way you want ☺️🌷
Hi, my Brugmansia plant (20" high) snapped in the middle due to the high wind. What should I do with the top part? Can i still grow it and if so how can I do that?
You can make a cutting from the broken top piece. Brugmansias are most often propagated by cuttings. Cut the 2-3 leaves down from the branch tip with a razor sharp knife (the cut must be clean) and stick in a good propagating medium such as a sand and peat mix or sand and vermiculite mix. For more information consult any resource on plant propagation.
How many years does it take to get first bloom? I planted mine last year in the spring and no bloom yet even though looks nice. Thanks
They should bloom easily first year and be covered in blooms. So likely not enough sun or fertilizer I would assume.
HI i just got 2 plants purple and white - it has these pods that are seeds inside what do i do with them??? when do i pick them and plats them
When Brugmansia seed pods change from green to yellow they are ripe to pick and seeds inside are ready.
can i spray neem oil on the top of the soil around the brugmansia, I've heard of that for other plants
In general, unless there is a specific pest problem that you are trying to tackle, we don't recommend using pesticides. But if you do have pest problems, applying neem on soil can be helpful. That's because the active ingredient of neem, azadirachtin, is taken up by plants through the roots. Azadirachtin works against a wide range of pests including mites, whiteflies, aphids, thrips and fungus gnats. Azadirachtin does not kill existing bugs but it interferes with the normal development of the offspring of bugs, and so helps to keep bugs in check.
That's why most people grow them from cuttings because you get a plant that will bloom like the mother plant. I have over 15 different kind of brugmansias that include doubles triples and newly hybrids with darker colors. They do grow very rapidly I have had a cutting even a seedling grow upto 6 ft tall in 7-9 months. With Ofcorse biweekly feeding and good soil and lots and lots of water. Btw I'm located in California so the weather is mostly warm throughout the year. And about the poisonous levels it's very poisonous and a tiny bit of ingestion will make you hallucinate and if enough is ingested it will kill you or you can have brain damage or other effects.
how did you get the cuttings started? i have an empty lot next door n id love any info bout digging some up the lot is full of them on the fence?
+Amber lamp labarge
you can get cuttings and root them In water then plant them when roots have showed up or just plant the cuttings straight in dirt. Keep them in the shade until they start growing.
ok thx
I just bought a house in zone 9A, and everything was dead, but when I installed a well irrigation system, I had about 10 of these pop up within a matter of two months and grow close to 10 feet tall!!!
I am always out there, touching them with my bare hands and the flowers, etc.,and I have never had any ill effects
I love them so much! You are right, they are extremely fast growing.
i just bought two trumpets and i cant tell which of the two i have, im under the impression that i have the Brugmansia type but im not 100% sure what is the difference? and would a humming bird come to it because i have a huge humming bird garden and im in BC Canada
Brugmansias are easy to tell from Daturas. Here is a useful article which should help clarify the differences: forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/1803541/the-difference-between-brugmansia-and-datura.
Thank you I'm sure it will help I will keep you posted,as to how the out come goes.
One of mine seem to have a dark purple trunk or steam not sure about the second one because it is much smaller than the other look very much the same so far
Could you please tell me why my buds fall off before they ever bloom out I have not ever had it happen before
Where can I buy actual plants 🌱 of Angel trumpets
You can order them of off Ebay. Type in angel trumpets and have fun
So bummed..I got some brugmansia seeds online & none of them germinated..I use a humidity dome & heat mat (on a thermostat). Usually have great success with most other seeds. any tips? You think I got bad seeds? Over 40 days in the dome and...nothin
bdb jmb I don’t buy seeds online anymore because so many are scams. I ordered some from eBay and the envelope arrived with a Chinese address and official Homeland Security tape where they had opened it, confiscated the seeds, & resealed it. 😂
Oops. I thought Brugmansia was the same as Datura. I love the aroma and the shape of the flower. I would like to know how to keep it alive in cold wet Seattle.
witch one do you have a Datura or a angel trumpet
I live in Seattle too and have 5 angel trumpet plants if you want to bring them in for the winter you can store them in a basement or a garage and let them go dormant just make sure you water them enough to keep the root ball moist I check mine about every three weeks in the spring time when it gets above 50 or the last frost put them outside and use only water the first couple of times to moisten the roots after that use miracle tomato plant using the large part of the spoon that comes with the box and add to one gallon of water and fertilize every 2 weeks hope this helps you
They are closely related, but datura is usually a shrub, while brugmansia is a tree, they both look beautiful, datura is easier to keep alive in colder climates, so maybe try growing this instead, although be careful, they spread insanely fast.
Do brugmansia's seed pods posseses those hallucinogenics properties as well?? Thanks anyone✌️
Yes every part of the plant is toxic
Can you compost dropped leaves and flowers or would that poison your compost? What about verma-composting, would Brugmansia plant material harm or kill your compost worms?
Steven Biggs replies: “This is a great question. I have never seen anything written about this specifically, but here is my thought process: Brugmansia is in the same family as potato, which contains an alkaloid (solanine, I think) that is also poisonous if ingested. And potato plants are often composted. (If you hear of people NOT composting potato plants, it is to avoid carrying over disease.) So I have treated brugmansia leaves and flowers as I do potato plants, and composted them. (The woody branches and trunks, however, are too woody for the compost heap.) I have never had any problems. I just did a quick search and came up with this article by the Royal Horticultural Society, which deals with the composting of one of Brugmansia’s weedy cousins, Datura stramonium: www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=536. When it comes to vermicomposting I don’t know and have never tried it."
Richters Herbs Okay, thank you very much. Someone gave me some Brugmansia seeds recently and I was thinking of trying to container grow them on my balcony, but I verma=compost and was worried about adding their leaves and spent flowers to my worm bin.
what kind of fertilizer should I use?
Since a focus of growing Brugmansias is the flowers, fertilizers relatively lower in the first number (nitrogen) and higher in the second number (phosphorus) are preferred because too much nitrogen in proportion to phosphorus can result in mostly leafy growth and fewer flowers. Something like a 5-10-5 would work well.
I have 3 plants that have huge amount of leaves, but no sign of flowers... what do I need to do to get it to flower??
Bone meal
30:45 😂😂
What to do with insect on the leaves. They are fill like sticky, and they makes webs. How to get rid of them.
Sounds like you have a bad infestation of spider mites. If you check the undersides of the leaves they appear as tiny specks that slowly move around. If you have a magnifier you can confirm that. They can be hard to get rid of. Use repeated sprays of insecticidal soap, making sure to get all of the plant covered with spray, including the undersides of the leaves. The best way to ensure complete coverage is to dip the whole above-soil parts of the plant in a solution of insecticidal soap, and do that repeatedly every 3-4 days for a couple of weeks. Dipping the plant is of course only feasible for small plants.
Richters Herbs Help ! I planted my Peach Brugmansia in my yard ,it had Beautiful Peach colored blooms first time . Now it has rebloomed and the bloom are Yellow .Why ?
I’m sure you figured it out by now but brugmansias almost always come out yellow at first then deepen to either orange, peach or pink. Unless they’re white.
@@dreamym00n59 Thank you I was really upset .I got it because it was Peach ,I was ready to trash it.
I'm a little confused. In the beginning you said they need LOTS of water. But when they are dormant, you check them once a month and if you over water them they can rot the roots. How often do you water them when you bring them out again?
As many in the horticultural industry will say, watering is the toughest job. It is hard to get right because the conditions and the plant's needs change a lot through the seasons and you cannot mindlessly water plants the same amount every day. This is especially true with plants that go into full dormancy or a semi-dormant slow-growth phase for part of the year. If you keep watering during these periods you will likely damage the root system with too much water. When plants are dormant or semi-dormant they are not transpiring much water through their leaves and the roots are not sucking up water. If you do not adjust your watering you end up with a flooded root system that will begin to rot, which is why Steven Biggs says you need to hold the water to once a month when Brugmansia is dormant. When the plants start to come out of dormancy, and as the leaves develop, you increase the water until the plants are fully active and you need to give them lots of water.
my brugmansia has small leaves, what might the problem be?
Hard to say. If your plant always had small leaves then perhaps it is not a Brugmansia but a Datura. If it is indeed a Brugmansia poor plant health can stunt growth and leaf size. If you are sure that you have a Brugmansia, inspect for signs of pest infestation and consider transplanting it in fresh potting soil.
thank you, you've given me some things to look for, the flowers are fine, large and fragrant, i think it might be the food
These plants are like crack to caterpillars, it drives me freakin crazy. Anyone know a good way to keep them off your angel trumpets?
Brugmansia will actually kill all of the caterpillars itself if you just leave it be, they contain tropane alkiloids that are toxic to humans and especially animals, these alkiloids cause deliriant like effects when ingested by humans usually not being fatal in moderation, however these effects are 100% of the time fatal to small organisms. You have to be careful handling this plant actually as these compounds can be absorbed through the skin.
53 minutes when 5 minutes would be overkill. Wafffffffffflllleee
Have you tried to cross a brugmansia with a datura?
We have never done it, but we have read that it is possible. They have the same number of chromosomes. Some people have reported successful crosses with Brugmansia as the pollen donor to Datura. However some have suggested that the progeny of such crosses exhibit mostly the features of the Datura parent, and hence are not particularly remarkable.
No one carries those around where I live.......😩
Order seeds online 😉
Order a rooted cutting so you know what color it’ll be
There is hardly any useful information in this. Even the simplest questions cannot be answered. I really hope the people did not pay to hear this guy talking about his patio with flowers.
luciferforpresident what kind of fertilizer do you use?
Damn the breathing in sound you make is annoying as hell. cover the mic or something next time
I like it
