On the reason behind the Gatling gun-style weapon, I think it makes sense for them to have a form of rapid fire extermination when they're dealing with a Time Lord, since it means they can stop them from regenerating with multiple blasts from their weapons

I think Eve of the Daleks is proof Chibnall's strengths lies in small, simple ideas where he gets a longer runtime to play around the sandbox in. Fun characters, clever time loop twists, genuine moments of emotion and heart, great action and direction... an absolute blast! Bring on Legend of the Sea Devils

For me the stand out scene was when Dan confronts the doctor and how she treats Yaz.
    "I dunno what you mean"
"I think you do. And I don't know why you pretend to me, and to her, that you don't care"
Thirteen has a real problem opening up to people and showing how dark and scared she feels on the inside and Dan seeing through all that really spoke to me.

I feel the fandom's even more fraught over this episode than usual. I tweeted a mild joke about the Daleks having shit aim while watching it and suddenly I'm supposed to have taken a side in some discourse about plot armour that I don't care about and didn't even know was happening

It's stupid that Storm Trooper aiming is now suddenly a horrible violation of breaking suspension of disbelief in Eve of the Daleks when Storm Trooper aiming has existed since 1977 and was not that big of a deal before. Hating the Storm Trooper aiming in Eve of the Daleks is fine but it's ridiculous to act like it's the only thing in existence that is bad at it and has storm trooper aiming.

  • @tTaseric

I think the purpose of the new Dalek guns was purely for pacing reasons. The Daleks need to be able to kill 3-5 people at a time without slowing down the episode, as episodes like Dalek and Evolution of the Daleks shows it takes quite a bit of time for Daleks to shoot at multiple targets.
It also just helps keep the Bronze Daleks bearable. If they want to keep the same Dalek designs for 17 years, they need to subtly change them up every now and then so they don't get repetitive. It seems silly, but the claw and gatling gun is enough to make these Daleks unique.
One thing I really liked was how the Daleks were shot. These Dalek props were created during the Moffat era, but they feel like they're from Series 1. I don't know if it's the lighting or the camera angles but they just feel menacing in a way they haven't in a long time.

I rewatched Eve after your initial reaction, thinking about Nick's number of girlfriends. But some of the post-it notes go all the way back to the early naughties and he even says some relationships lasted less than a month. So while there are still a lot and even he had to realise dates from 2003 weren't coming back for stuff in 2022, it's not like he had 20 girlfriends in the space of a year.

My head cannon is that the TARDIS brought them to the place right before midnight on new years eve so that the doctor would sort of be given a hint of when the deadline would be. Like the TARDIS could have landed at any point and any time and gone through the time loop shenanigans but it intentionally chose to time it right before midnight to let the doc know how much time she had left.

While my worst to best Dalek story list is identical to yours, I did swap The Daleks' Master Plan and Revolution Of The Daleks. So Master Plan is my 12th favourite and Revolution is 13. I absolutely loved this episode! A great start to 2022 and I think it has everything you could possibly want in a Doctor Who story: humour, action, tension, excitement, emotion and of course... Daleks! Brilliant stuff and I particularly love what Chibnall has done with Thasmin, it has been a long time coming but I am glad it has been fully addressed and I think this might be the first "coming out" storyline in Doctor Who too? That is SO important! I'm interested to see where this goes though it seems like the Doctor is trying to keep Yaz at arm's length, and I have a feeling that is because of what has happened in the past with the likes of Rose, being in love with the Doctor can be very dangerous and she wants to keep Yaz safe - that is how I saw that final scene with what the Doctor says to Yaz about "saying stuff we don't mean" in regards to the Doctor's actions catching up with her though I do think the Doctor won't be able to avoid this forever, she is eventually going to have to be completely honest with Yaz and that is where I think this is going! It will be interesting to see what happens...
Brilliant episode, as much as I loved Flux this is exactly what we needed: a smaller scale story with a small cast and one central location. A nice pallette cleanser - and a cameo from KARL from TWWFTE which I did not see coming but I loved that!
Anyway... THE SEA DEVILS ARE COMING BACK IN THE NEXT EPISODE!! I still can't believe that is actually happening, I have wanted this for YEARS! Roll on Spring. Chinese Pirates and Sea Devils? Should be a fun one!

I'd perhaps have made the paradigm daleks bronze and one white supreme then introduce other colours later on when needed.
A dalek fanatic like me is ever so bored with the NSD bronze daleks. Its not change for changes sake its evolution, the grey dalek type would never have changed if the classic series was never cancelled, you gotta remember that

I can look past a lot when it comes to this current era of Who, but I don't think I'll be able to look past a botched "Thasmin" storyline. I know that it will probably end in heartbreak but I just want a happy same sex relationship on TV, especially in Who. Plus I'm not sure how it would work if Yaz were to stay on. The Nick point is relevant because the time loop sets them back to where they were after the first loop (at least in the establishing loops). By 4 minutes to in the first loop he was a dead body so the loop would kick in after he died.

Was it stated that the forcefield was a Dalek tactic? I was under the impression it was the result of the TARDIS repairing itself. Also, I'm not convinced Sarah dislikes Nick particularly, it's just that in that moment she's irritated by Jeff's thoughtlessness and is taking it out on Nick. After she mocks Nick's joke and he heads off disappointed, you can see she's kicking herself, metaphorically speaking, for being rude to him. It's just bad timing, in my opinion.

I know this is not pertaining to the episode specifically but part of me has wanted to see the 13th Doctor go through her own Time Lord Victorious moment. Probably not quite as far as the 10th Doctor went and with the addition of her companions being present but personally I think it would make for a good moment if it's set up properly and executed well, possibly even give some proper character development. I'd want the companions present to give more emotional stakes and a moment where the Doctors companions are scared of her and the implication that if she did go through with it, that no one could stop her.
Personally, I think now is the time that moment like it has better chance of happening when compared to the rest of the 13th Doctor's era (to clarify, I don't think it will happen, I'm just saying that if it did, around now would be the best time to do it.) Considering the Doctor has been going through a lot of stress and turmoil (the Timeless Child and the Flux among other events) along with her upcoming regeneration, I think around now would be the best time they could possibly do it.

A bit of set up that never got any real pay-off imo was the fact that this is Dan’s first, proper encounter with a Dalek.
The episode pays lip service to this with Dan being nonplussed at first seeing one and asking if “they can just go?” An interesting sign of cowardice to show that he’s still new and not predisposed to saving people like the Doctor and Yaz, potentially causing some friction in the team, maybe the Dalek could have manipulated Dan into working against the Doc, even. But instead, he’s suddenly heroically running around one without any provocation. It just felt like a weird thing for the episode to bring up and then not do anything with.

Claiming War of the Sontarans and Eve of the Daleks are bad because of Storm Trooper aiming is a stupid nitpick. Criticizing inconsistent aiming could be a valid critique but making it the main point to hate an episode just makes it become a ridiculous nitpick. Plot Armor is a stupid nitpick in general because a plot relevant character surviving is not automatically bad writing or bad tension. If the shit from The Sontaran Experiment and the Invasion of Time didn't ruin the Sontarans and if the potato jokes in The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky and Strax comedy didn't ruin the Sontarans, then one scene of Storm Trooper aiming ain't going to ruin the Sontarans. It's hard to believe one character running around one Dalek before getting shot is the worst thing to happen to them with a history of, they can't climb stairs misconception and getting defeated by their own sewers. If you think the Sontarans and Daleks are good villain's then Storm Trooper aiming shouldn't be a horrible horrendous to them.
Any moment where a plot relevant character survives can be nitpicked as plot armor. With some Doctor Who examples, that Dalek deciding to spare Rose after killing multiple people and being lock downed with her can be criticized and nitpicked as plot armor for Rose. The Doctor and Peri getting replaced by robots and the robots being shot to death can be criticized and nitpicked as plot armor for the Fifth Doctor and Peri. John Benton survives sometimes because of plot armor. And if being in a dangerous un survivable situation is automatically bad writing, then The Ninth Doctor shouldn't have responded to that Dalek distress signal and the TARDIS shouldn't have landed on Androzani Minor. And John Benton would have just died. Some shoot outs in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul had some missed shots but that doesn't automatically mean bad writing or tension. Game of Thrones still had characters that did not die and where hard to kill off because of their plot relevance despite being an anti-plot armor story. Plot armor is a stupid nitpick because a character having plot relevance surviving is not automatically bad writing. Another reason plot armor is a bullshit nitpick is that it's basically a step closer to the bullshit nitpick of plot relevance is bad. And claiming plot relevance is bad is like claiming a plant is bad for doing photosynthesis or a banana is bad for having potassium.
Also acting like the Chibnall era is the only thing that is bad at the negative criticisms you give will either makes you come across as a Not my doctor or a Nitpicking Lunatic. When negative criticism is tarnished by lunatics like not my doctors. Nitpicks like Storm Trooper aiming and plot armor are going to come across as really stupid, especially if it's used as a main point to hate an episode or a special. Not my doctor bigotry itself is a stupid nitpick. So even if you have a criticism that has gotten backlash as a nitpick that has no sexist bigotry in it, there is a higher probability of people thinking "Personally, I really don't see the difference.". If you have a criticism that has gotten backlash as a nitpick, then try using your other criticisms instead of doubling down on the one criticism that has gotten backlash as a nitpick. It's hard to believe that the Chibnall era is the only thing that is bad at Stormtrooper aiming and invented it since the trope of villain's having bad aiming was named after villain's from a movie that premiered in theaters in 1977. What I don't get is why is the Storm Trooper aiming trope suddenly bad now when it existed since 1977 and wasn't that big of an issue before? If Storm Trooper aiming is such a horrible suspension of disbelief and accurate physics is so important to enjoying Doctor Who, then it's good that the TARDIS can travel time and space because our Sun is moving through space with our solar system moving with it while in orbit. Nothing in our solar system or the Milky Way Galaxy can be in the same point of time and space twice.

@@casualcraftman1599 People aren't saying those episodes were bad SOLELY because of the plot armour, it's just one more thing to add to the pile of problems with these episodes. And the issue people have is less that the characters are around to continue being in the story but that the situation they were in was made super improbable to survive and makes the enemies look really incompetent. Also, just because there's plot armour in other stories doesn't mean it was a great thing to have there or in the current stories.
That example with Rose and Dalek is given an internal justification due to the connection that it and Rose have. This kind of thing is a bare minimum you can expect to count against plot armour related issues. It's the same reason why the time loop in Eve isn't plot armour as it is a plot device that justifies why the characters aren't dead.
I think the main reason the plot armour stuff is getting more focus now is that we're in the age of social media where there is more room for discussion of these sort of topics and it's a lot easier to inspect media more closely to notice certain problems.

Lot of issues with this episode. Why do the Daleks only initially send one Dalek? They say they learn from each loop, so why don’t they just appear near the TARDIS when the loop starts? The Doctor and the companions start the loop in the same place. The Daleks could then just shoot them in each loop until it closes.
Dan distracting the Dalek is brave of him, but also stupid. Because if he gets shot, and they escape the loop, he stays dead. So he basically guarantees they won’t escape the loop, unless they’re fine with him being permanently dead.
I disliked Nick a lot. Nothing to do with the actor, but his actions are just weird and creepy. And Sarah going on a trip with him in a romantic sense is ludicrous. I could see her becoming a platonic friend to him, but a relationship is ridiculous.

Another thing, the fact that they need to leave the facility by midnight to escape the loop made no sense. If they killed the however many Daleks in the facility they'd theoretically be fine.
It would have made more sense if the TARDIS landed somewhere and in its reset once outside the TARDIS the Doctor realizes they need to evacuate a certain distance from the TARDIS as it would set up some sort of short range explosion.
The Doctor was intending to land it on an empty beach planet only to find they are in the basement of a storage facility. They quickly find out two other people are there but the thought is they can evacuate easily. But then there is an issue as the Daleks have set up a force field around the facility.
In the end they use the fireworks and whatever random Jeff stuff to find a way to disable the force field long enough for the Doctor and friends to escape the facility, with the TARDIS external explosion taking care of the Daleks who have unwittingly trapped themselves.

I'm not really a fan of Dan circling around the Dalek like that. I could maybe see this sort of thing working with the classic era Daleks (particularly in Destiny) but at this point that Dalek should have been able to shoot him. It's just absurd.
Speaking of Dan, it's pretty sketchy for him to tell the Doctor about Yaz's feelings the way he does. Maybe if we assume that he knows the Doctor already knows it wouldn't be as bad but still not great.
And yeah 13's character going in circles and being a jerk has definitely cemented her as having the weakest characterization of the New Who mainline Doctors (not really fair to bring in War and Fugitive into the comparison).
