  • A friend of mine bought a few Noco jump starters from an auction. Two of them turned out to be faulty. Let's find out why.
    Yes, it's long, as between the two of them there were four faults to track down.
    For other Noco repair videos check out the SOSfix Electronics channel.

    The 1.3V with no battery could also be a safety thing: if the clamps are shorted, that will drop to 0V and thus it knows not to try closing the main contactor. If instead it sees 9V to 11V, it knows its connected to a dead battery. Same with if the polarity is wrong, as it will see a negative potential and thus not close the contactor.

    Great video I have the Genius boost that seemed to be great for the first few years I've owned it. About a year ago the cased separated but it still worked like normal. just recently when i needed it it was dead. I was able to charge it use it and the next morning it was dead again, so now it will charge but will not hold a charge for any length of time. Any ideas?

    Hi. great vid. Would it be possible to put the jumpercables facing the other way so the cables face the same way as the flashlight?

    • @AintBigAintClever
      @AintBigAintClever  7 місяців тому

      It's difficult to get the case closed as it is. If you freeze-frame at 7:18 you'll see that the mouldings aren't symmetrical and would require some modification to get them to fit in, even if the cables themselves can be turned round.

  • @g.c.3339

    Fuse need not be accessible if it is to protect against a two-fault scenario that may result in excessive heat. The probability of those exact two faults (say by component failure) is likely very low, but the need to protect against overheating is a safety function if, in a rare case those two specific faults do happen. That is a common design approach and reflects a thoughtful design. If a fuse for that purpose ever opens, there would be other parts that have failed - so making the fuse user-replaceable would be useless.

    If the 30A fuse blows then something has shorted out on the control board, and this fuse blowing prevents a potential fire. It's a very sensible design decision to not make this a user serviceable part, just imagine what would happen when some idiot invariably shoves a piece of thick copper wire in to stop it blowing... Some would say this is a self limiting problem (Darwin award) but it would open the manufacturer to litigation.

  • @mattmoreira210
    @mattmoreira210 2 роки тому

    14:55 you’re not supposed to replace it?! Fuses are the last components to blow when semiconductors are overloaded. Maybe the fuse is there so things don’t catch fire *after* the semiconductors have gone short-circuited.

    Mine shuts down when once it is in override mode and I crank my car to start the Noco Boost Shuts down. Mine turns on, shows its charging and it is now at 100% if I use override mode then minute I try to crank my car, GB70 Just shuts down. Anyone ever have this happen to them?

    • @AintBigAintClever
      @AintBigAintClever  Рік тому

      Sounds to me like the battery pack itself could be defective? You know when a car battery has a weak cell, so it may appear to be fully charged but the voltage collapses as soon as you try to do anything "big" with it like start the car? Could be that, with the battery voltage quickly collapsing to below the point where the GB70's processor thinks the pack is fully discharged and shuts down to prevent overdischarge. I could be wrong of course, but that's my suspicion anyway.

    • @ELEVOPR
      @ELEVOPR Рік тому

      @@AintBigAintClever Thanks for the tip. Can I check that with a Multimeter? Can the Battery Pack be changed or replaced? Thanks again for your response.
      I have the older GB70 with the much thicker Cables.

    • @AintBigAintClever
      @AintBigAintClever  Рік тому

      @@ELEVOPR I think you'd have to dismantle the unit and put a multimeter across the balance wires, see if any of the cells keel over when jumpstarting. I expect it's a custom cell pack so if the cells are gone it's a bin job.

    You could have tested whether the PB switch was bad by simply shorting the two N-O contacts to simulate what a good switch would do when pressed. To simply replace the switch without doing this was very shortsighted.

    • @AintBigAintClever

    What a poorly designed casing for an overcomplicated jump starter . Everything slammed in that case together and almost impossible to repair. The risk of puncturing a Lithium cell and causing a fire is always there. I bet the Copper looking alligator clips are not strapped and not copper either. 2000 Amps claim? doubt it. Great video anyway and fault analyses. Great effort to unsolder and test the SMD components. Did you test the actual jumpstart capacity?

    • @AintBigAintClever
      @AintBigAintClever  11 місяців тому +2

      I didn't test them as jumpstarters, just fixed them and gave them back. I've not heard any more so I assume they just do their job now, the person who owns them buys and sells cars so they probably get a reasonable bit of use now they work.
