What a find. What a project. :)
"Bork Bork!" Epic work on an absolute S show!
Dr. Chris, I love the videos and please keep the saving them Amigas
As long as I am able
Chris in a few words: you are good in your job. Great job you did. Thankx for sharing with us. Greetings from Steven from the Netherlands
its not done yet, P2 on patreon this week
In my 40s, damaged, crusty and stuck in low... sounds about right for me too.
That chip tester is super cool. The Amiga custom chips just keep rising in price over at anal logic. I was shocked at what they are selling Super Busters for nowadays. Just received 4 CIA's for a ReA3000 board Kavanoz built for me. I dont know how you have the patience to root cause these board issues. I salute you.
The rising costs are obviously due to the fact these chips haven't been produced in decades, and more critically that these dwindling supplies aren't only used for repairs these days, but mostly the new craze from people like you that want a 'ReAmiga' built from scratch. I understand the Buster 11 is now one of the more rarer chips, so much so that Jens Schoenfeld commissioned Dave Haynie to design it's successor, but that didn't seem go anywhere. It's easy to bash Analogic, but if they didn't continually raise the prices and charge excoriate amounts, then you can bet your bottom dollar someone would buy up all the stock, either to charge excoriate prices, or worse still to hog.
Looking forward to a visit to Mr Simon to have another go on the VR soon 😊 Great vid as always Chris 👍
So you have played it? Wow cool!
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration its a great experience if you ever get the chance, and almost hard to believe there's an Amiga powering the experience!
Love NorthRidgeFix. His low melt temp solder and his work finding a desoldering sucker that actually sucks was super helpful too. When I need to remove my FatAgnus socket, I’ll be using his low melt solder.
i recently got a new desoldering gun that smokes them all. i will be reviewing video it soon. and its CHEAP compared to the others. less than 140
Great informative video. I always wondered if anybody has attempted to emulate the VR daughter boards for use on like Winuae or anything.
it was a proprietary board for that game. one would have to have original hardware to duplicate to a add on for the machine, then all the custom proprietary connectors, goggles, weapon, etc for that device. which is not possible.
Great work and I know Simon!
Major Eaton : We have top men working on it right now.
Indiana Jones: Who?
Major Eaton : Top... men.
Great vid and super persistence as always Chris! I couldn't quite work out what the fix for the missing clock was though?
The little trimmer capacitor that adjust the time and it was also missing the silver can crystal
Hey Simon, where you at in Pa. If you ever heard of the Smerf back until the late 90's well I am in Pa. also.
Dr. Chris, tell us about the A3000 power supply you have
Upcoming video!!
Chris your a miracle worker, I would have thought the VR System was to be replaced with a Raspberry PI or similar, the 3000 was too far gone, a longer term project, to be saved, but your determination may win, but at what cost ? The Grinding pen looks like a handy bit of kit ...
Well it gets finished in part2 so hang in there!
Should have titled this one, “Dr Chris and the A3K Board of Dooooooom!”. 🤣🤣🤣 You always seem to get the Cursed ones 😔 I still need to look at the system I bought over 2 years ago. I’m dreading on what I will have to do with it 😬 One day….. Thanks for the informative video. Cheers 🍻
It does seem that way doesnt it
might have been quicker to just mention what on the board does work because that sounds like a hell of a list of broken things.
Well i dont know during a discovery?
there is a simon M from the uk that has a few of these vr amiga's he takes them to leicester retro computer museum im just wondering if these are his amiga's that your working on ?.
Yes this is his. I have several more of these to do in the future
I find these more entertaining than watching the murder mystery shows. They have a similar plot line. "What killed this Amiga? Find out on the next episode!" I still should send in my A4k+CSPPC to see if you can have better luck getting it to detect and use the RAM so I can use the PPC side of things. It has always seemed unstable for me since I got it back from stanchu... but it seemed to work great for him, so it potentially is due to something on the A4k motherboard.
The ppc is bsod solder and they always cracked. , the card needs to be x rayed to see if its still intact and reflowed w leaded solder again. Only one place I know that does that. Retrorewind.ca
Mr. Chris, where did you buy this tester for Amiga chips?
here : store.backbit.io/product/chip-tester/ its in the description of the tools i use
When they built these with daughterboards, did Commodore have a "blank" daughterboard to take it out of the testing equation since they won't work without it?
No the virtuality board snapped in as the riser thus completing the auto detect circuit
There are a surprising amount of 3rd party daughterboard designs for A3000 and A4000 desktop versions.
One or two of them are aimed at the other incarnation of the A3000 that never got put into production by Commodore, IIRC. They won't physically fit any other machine. Just a heads up if anybody comes across one.
what is that tester you used to test Denice?
backbit chip tester, links in desc
.
Thank you so much!
