  • E475: In this episode i install the BFG9060, a 68060 cpu w ram board into the Amiga 3000d. there has been a ongoing issue with its dma and scsi access with the internal scsi of the 3000 series machines. so i start to figure out just what exactly causes this and how to work around it and enjoy a 68060 BFG amiga 3000. from swapping in a 4091, to finally figuring out the internal issue on internal scsi of this card. Hope this helps you. enjoy!

    Back reason is sadly that the SCSI and DMA on the A3000 is STUPID picky with its timings. breaking on some 060 solutions..
    get a board work on the 3000 SCSI DMA. and it will work on anything. this is why we do most of the TF4060 tests now on A3000 and AA3000..

      I hope you can get the TF4060 to work with A3000 SCSI. My Cyberstorm MK2 and MK3 work totally fine in my 3000's using the A3000 SCSI. I also had trouble with the BFG so I gave up on it and put it in my 4000.

    Pre-Gotek, in running my AV production studio in the Chicagoland area, I had to make sure all my A2000 systems were rocksolid, so I used an external SCSI Syquest and built cartridges for it that would have a base Amiga OS, and one for each system as I slooowly built them up to ensure that all the apps weren't glitchy, didn't freeze or guru, especially when migrating to later expansion cards like from the 040 to 060, rom v2.04 to v3.1, updated card firmware roms, etc. It saved me numerous times and kept me in business with no downtime. As an added bonus, it allowed me to change entire system configurations on the fly by booting with a cartridge geared specifically for only graphic arts or only audio editing or only business productivity etc.

    Wondering if my A3660 card was messing with board scsi on my own flaky A3K- as I didn’t terminate the Zulu board either. Nah, it was flaky before the Zulu!
    This is a great diagnostic session as it’s clear the BFG has some issues with same. Andrew is a great resource for Amiga users!!

    I got a Zuluscsi RP2040 and had similar issues with my Cyberstorm/060 MK3. There was a firmware update for it last month and that fixed the issues I was having. (Firmware I installed was 2024.02.06)

    I never got my BFG to work properly in my 3000D with Buster 11 and DMA mod. Got fed up and installed a WarpEngine 040.
    ZipTest will also tell you if the ZIP chips are Static Column Mode or just cheap Fast Page chips (slower). It is shown as one of the first lines of output. Most SC Chips for sale on the Internet are actually re-printed FP chips and sold as the faster, more expensive SC variant. All from China.
    This tool, ziptest, only works on the A3000 and tests the ZIP chips by bypassing the OS and going directly into the hardware. It will show a text-graphical presentation of all the RAM banks, their ID's and if the chips are good or not. It also does a thorough low-level test. It's a really good tool.

    I had all kinds of issues with the TF1260 once I installed the mmulibs. That error @18:35 was a large bane. For some reason the 030 doesn't care at all about what mmu libs are installed but the 040 libs causes a conflict with the 060 chip. Once I removed the 040 libs and kept the 060 libs Everything just worked.

  • @cullmaster7361

    Nice Detective work Dr Chris 👍🏻 Have had many an issue with the MMULibs on other accelerators. MK1 Cyberstorm with a REV 1 and REV 5 full fat 060’s would also guru and get lockups. I always run MMULibs in “Expert” mode. That way you get to pick and choose what gets installed. I use the SetPatch setting to help choose CPU. You can then switch and play with which MMU functionality you want to use. Or all of them off and just have CPU Libs on. Worth trying that way. Also have had issue with the Apollo Cards (Classic ones, NOT vampire). 1240 and 4040 will not play nice even when having the correct configuration in Env-arch. Look forward to what you find next. Cheers 🍻

    Interesting that MMU libs adds problems - same experience here. (I’m sure you used 030 version for the 060 LC). FastIEEE failing was the bane of my 3000 until removing it!

    Wow Chris, that is quite a zippy machine, even if it is a PITA to get running. I would have loved such a zippy machine when they were new 30+ years ago. That said, now I'd rather use my 500+ once I get my RGB2HDMI installed along with the pistorm. Add an A314, and that's 3 pieces of Pi in my Amiga. The only thing that config lacks is fast Chip RAM speed.

    • @ChrisEdwardsRestoration
      @ChrisEdwardsRestoration  4 місяці тому

      yeah it boots super fast, any amiga without a RTG card will boot super fast.. this was just a identification issue, and now its rock solid without the mu files in sys:c and does what i need it to do.

    • @ChrisEdwardsRestoration
      @ChrisEdwardsRestoration  4 місяці тому

      no i just wanted to do a base install and work my way forward, thats why i did it twice after the working one to purposely break it. it has been solid as a rock since not using the mu files in the sys:c dir, it DOES have the 060 cpu library working fine as sysinfo reports the 060, the official word is that it is timings in the Super Dmac02, and to find the unicorn super Dmac04, but those are beyond impossible to find. I will work through the docs to see if i can reign it in, i have asked others, including WranglerUK and GadgetUK and they are discussing various situations.

    Messaged Chucky about the BFG9060 in A3000 and he thinks the DMAC is part of the problem, you need a rev 04 (and because of that a Ramsey 07) to get it to work flawless. Those are extremely rare, pretty much impossible to get. Unless you happen to have a borked A3000T that has one. He (of course) has one in his AA3000+ and it apparently just works.
    [edit] And if I misunderstood anything it is of course my fault and not chuckys 🙂

    • @linuxjedivideo

      im sure it does, i was just trying to figure out what it was, or a possible what it was. is it the Defacto fix? no, but it works for me with what i use if for,. Hi Chris & All, I installed a BFG9060 with 060 rev. 6 and installed the suggested MMU libraries. I have noticed since installing the card that every time my Amiga generates a disk click to the floppies that I now get a brief flash on my monitor (Dell U2410f). I never had this issue before installing the card & CPU. I’m going to try noclick and see if that helps, but this is a weird issue.
