Westy 12 is one of the highest rated and most difficult to acquire beers in the world. This Belgian Quad comes in at 10.2% ABV with 38 IBUs. It poured a beautiful deep amber color with a slight reddish hue. The head was frothy, tan and luxurious. The nose was subtle yeast, stone fruits, and brown sugar. This was medium/full bodied, cloudy, with very little visible carbonation. This was a complex beer, with raisin, brown sugar, spicy Belgian yeast coming through as well as enough alcohol to let you know you are drinking a 10% beer. Was this the best beer in the world? That is up to you to decide, but Anderson and I loved this one and think it was one of the best beers we had ever tried.

I live only 3 miles from the Sint Sixtus Abdij ,they used to brew the 8% ,now that one was the best for me .The 12 is like eating and drinking at the same time but it's a hell of a beer .A lot of people are saying that it's not so strong ,but you should see them walk out of the pub across the abby .

Priveliged to try this three days ago in Poperinge about five miles from the Monastery. I’m more of a blonde beer man but I loved this, warm, chocolate, coffee, caramel flavours but without any sickliness or over sweetness! A real treat!

I visited west Vleteren a few months ago after a trip to Bruges. Really enjoyed the restaurant there as well. Great atmosphere. Brought 36 bottles back home and will keep them in the basement for at least a year. Aged this beer gets better and better. Once I was offered this beer aged 3 years and that was certainly the best beer I ever had.

Stationed out here in Germany. I am able to get cheap (relative) access to all the Trappist lines. For me, 12 and Rochefort 10 are neck-in-neck. Quads are just such a wonderful style!

I have had those others, they are really good as well. There is actually a decent store in Cleveland that will ship Belgian beers for a relatively low cost. I love trying the new ones that pop up. Sorry for the late response, this comment must have slipped by me. Cheers!

Depending on the conditions and time this is the perfect beer, as are a few others. They make the top 10 and a lot of trail evenings without any conclusion on who's the best. I graduated in brewery and maltery as a brewmaster in Belgium, and still discover fine local ones. I do have a passion for "geuzes", the lambics, so lets search your channel. Thx for the review, an honest beer tasting, not an overacting OMG. Bumped into your channel and this style makes sure I will explore it.

Belgian beers are my favorite, they are just a little expensive in the US, so I do not drink them as much as I would like. I am with you, it is i possible to pick a “best” beer as so many variables come into play. Also, the variety of beer available to us now means there are tons of hidden gems. I think that is what I like most. When you get a beer that is universally recognized as good, i expect that. When I try something unknown the fun begins. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I am sure as an actual brewer your palate is much more refined than mine and you must really enjoy trying all the varieties. I know I do and I am no expert, just a guy drinking beers in his yard..lol. Cheers!!

    • @MrGouffie
      @MrGouffie 9 місяців тому

Brewing, experimenting, testing, ... it is all great fun, but in the end "drinking a beer in the yard" is what it's all about. The part where stories and memories are born, linked to all these beers. If not today, I'm quite sure it is just a matter if time, with all these microbreweries in the US and Canada popping up, quality will follow and small hidden gems can be found. Enjoy your journey 🍻, I know where to track it 😄!

Last week I was at the Spiel convention in Essen Germany, and I always bring beers to trade with people and hand out to friends,. I had 8 Westvleteren 12 (10,2) and 8 Westvleteren Blond (5,8) with me, I got rid of these very fast ;) The other one I always bring is Gulden Draak (my personal favourite), a ruby red tripel (10,5) that has some sweetness. The Polish people seem to like this one. No clue if you guys have tried that one, if not, you should!

Give St. Bernardus Abt 12 Beer a try. Supposedly, the same recipe, but not brewed in a Trappist Monastery.
I lived in Belgium for 9 years. I visited the Westvleteren Monastery, but I was not able to purchase the beer! Luckily, I went across the street to the visitors center. There to my wondering eyes were two bottles, which I quickly purchased!

Normally I prefer ‘Oude geuze Boon’. But in this style I drink the St Bernardus pater dark, just because it is the lightest in alc. percentage. Although I don’t live far from Westvleteren it is a real hassle to be able to buy them. You have to call a number on specified days, when you are able to get in ( this is the hard part) you specify what sort you want (you’re limited to 1 case) and you give the number plate of the vehicle in which you’re gonna collect the case. I have no time for this! I went several times to the café opposite the brewery to have a drink (with a designated driver present).

I had one years ago and more on the way now. From what I remember, I was blown away that it was 12% as it tasted much lighter than that, which made it very unique. I remember thinking I could drink several of them no problem, as they didn't seem to heavy on taste. That's a little different than what you guys thought, so I'm interested to finally try it again and see what I think!

One thing I love about beer is trying something again, years after I had it for the first time. I know our palates change over time as do our taste preferences, but it is always cool to try a beer you thought you loved/hated then years later pick up new flavors, or maybe even see that your opinion has changed. Let me know what you think of the westy, would love to know if you still think it is the same as you remembered. thanks for taking the time to comment. Cheers!!

The heady pour is the way to pour the beer, it releases more gas and allows a more true flavor. Sure you have to wait for the head to relax but it's worth it for the flavor boost. I edited my comment and UA-cam thought it was spam and just auto-deleted. Well it's not lol.

I'm one of those lucky ones living in Belgium.
Before it became "Best beer of the World" I went on a West-Fleteren evening with a friend of mine (2005 or 2006).
We each drank 5 or 6 of these 12s.
The taste is great. And it réally gets better by the 2nd or 3rd, once your tastebuds "get it". Nothing compares to it.
    Rochefort 10 comes close, maybe.
The best though, is when we went home.
We were fairly drunk, of course. 5 of 6 of these and you're wiggling.
But while biking home, I started to trip, to hallucinate. Not the "normal" drunkenness, but hallucinations. Like seeing things that were simply not there. And the laugh kicks you normally get from weed, in a light version. I -of course- fell off my bike (no damage, since I was only doing 3km on a lowrider anyway) and couldn't stop laughing for, like 5 or 10 mins. No joke. There is something, fairly light, in that beer that will make you go "out of your mind".
This, to me, truly is the best beer in the world. Never experienced anything like it.

I was lucky enough to have had a bar owner as friend in Ghent, 15 years ago. He was a beer lover and mapped out the different cultures.
At the time he could list 600 breweries (mind you; only 11mln people live in Belgium) and more than 7000 different beers.
And, although I am biased, because I adopted Belgium as my home, I have never tasted anything as tasty as Belgian beers. Only Guinness, in their huge pints, freshly tapped in Ireland, can compete.

Did you ever try swirling around the yeast in the bottom of the bottle and add that to your glass? It’s a totally different experience. Back to tee shirt weather already!! Loving the atlas glasses. As long as you aren’t a seller, they can’t say shit if you don’t claim it as alcohol so him labeling the box as “beer” probably was the issue 😂 rookie mistake. Glad this box worked out! Amazing that glass can make it over here from Europe! Anderson is such a hard pour hater! And it wasn’t even really a hard pour! Lot of dark fruit aroma with a nice subtle sweetness. Booziness is noticeable but not overpowering. Quads are great and this sounds well crafted enough to understand why it’s rated so high but wondering what is the part of it that makes it the “BEST?” Theres so much difference out there. And I agree with Anderson it’s not fair or even proper to compare beers of different styles. I could like a pilsner better than all other pilsners but still like a sour or a stout more than that particular pils.

Last night we did a taste comparison: I have always wondered was it the fact that one was so hard to get that made it taste better, or that Jackson declared it the best in the world that made us want it, or was that demand and title well earned?
    The result:
    St. Bernardus 12.
Pours dark with light fermentation, the beer itself almost black.
Aromas of dark roasted malts and fruits.
On the palate, big hot of flavour that stays bitter, but lasts.
    Chimay Grande Reserve 2020 vintage:
Pours well with medium fermentation, beer again almost pours black.
Aroma; slightly sweeter than of St. Bernardus.
And on the palate, the finish is smoother, sweeter, slightly than St. Bernardus and is an overall more enjoyable drink.
    Westvleteren 12.
Again pours with medium head and near black body.
Aroma much more obvious of dark roasted malts and fruits.
On the palate, an intense hit which turns into a long sweet, almost caramel finish, making it the most satisfying enjoyable of the three.
All three are good beers. Great beers. St. Bernardus is the lightest and easiest to drink, meaning once can have more than one, though be careful at 10%.
Chimay (Blue), has the lowest strength at 9%, offers the drinker more in flavour and the 70cl means one can happily share a bottle with a (good) friend.
Westvleteren 12 was our favourite of the three, in a straight taste comparison, though the finished beer is strong, complex, but heavy, like a warm hug on a cold night. Reminded me of Hardy Ale (barley wine).
Is Westvleteren 12 worth the extra money over the other two?
    Probably not.
Is it the better beer? Two of us, yes.

Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing the results of your comparison. Truth is you can’t go wrong with any of these three! Cheers, Ian!

Love the beer. Having said that I am a retailer in Australia and unfortunately due the limited availability of this beer the cost is extremely high. We retail it for $60 a bottle but the cost price isn't much lower than that. Some retailers are $70 and the greedy ones will put $100+ per bottle! We do also stock St Bernadus ABT12 in 750ml for less than half the price. I don't care what anyone says though ABT12 and Westy 12 are not the same beer, but it's probably 85% close. You absolutely have to pay the big bucks if you want to try it and I am ok with that.

I am happy with what I paid. Would I like to get it for $5 a bottle instead of $25, of course, but it is what it is. If you can’t easily access it your area you pay more, like anything else. Now, I do wish we had saved one to do a side by side video as so many are saying it is similar to the St. Bernardus 12, which I can get fairly easily. Lesson learned. Cheers and I hope all is well in Australia.

@ABeerADayWithTK I personally think it is worth the asking price, even at $60. It's still a heck of a lot cheaper than flying to Belgium from Australia to drink one! Ultimately you are paying for not just a beer, but history also. These beers are produced in such a way that it's difficult to replicate anywhere else.
All is well in here mate, I trust it's the same for you too.

I think part of their fame derives from the fact that you had to go to the abbey to get the stuff yourself. It used to be difficult to even make an appointment and then we still had to drive 600 miles round trip to get the two cases. You bet it tasted great after that. You don't do stuff like that for a Bud Light. But now things have changed. You can buy it at liquor stores all over the Netherlands. I think the monks are making a big mistake. Because this takes away all the mystique that was hanging around this beer. Now it just becomes one of the other great quadruples that are out there. So it will remain special for a little while, because a lot of people still want their first taste of it, but how will that be in a year or two?

Hmmm, You shouldn't be able to buy this in liquor stores all over the Netherlands. The way to obtain these hasn't changed, except you make a reservation by the webpage instead of by phonecall. If you find these is stores, then it's because people are realy making a business out of it and charging a lot (using family and friends to go and get crates). Sure you aren't mixing them up with Sint-Bernardus? Wich is said to be the same recipe (but they do taste different, I tested ;) )

      @@ABeerADayWithTK no worries Chief!
It’s nothing like a Belgium Trappist brew, but, as an honest traditional stout with a depth of flavour it’s hard to beat.
Definitely kicks the behind of Guinness draft.
That said, Guinness do now do a bottled export stout which comes in at around 8%.
If they could achieve that sort of texture and flavour in their draft, then, I would certainly reconsider going back. As is though, it’s falling behind with the times otherwise (from a mainland Great Britain perspective that is…not sure if it tastes any different over in Ireland though as I’ve never been)

      Yes & No.
Since the monastry is really a monastry, they can only brew so much of it.
So, the supply is severely limited.
As a consequence, prices go sky-high, once the bottles leave the monastry.
And 1 simple thing: Driving to the monastry, getting 1 case (24 bottles) and going back home can easily cost you a few hours + 50€ in fuel, if you're not living nearby. That adds to the price, since you're only allowed 1 crate, costing somewhere around 50€ itself. So suddenly, if you live, say, in Bruxelles, the cost per bottle is not 2€, but 5€ orso.
And if you're a professional serving it in your bar, suddenly you have to take into account 0.36€ per km for the drive. Bruxelles to West-Vleteren suddenly becomes a 300km road trip, taking 3h+ plus waiting time. In cost alone (not calculating hours) that's 108€ for your trip. That's double the money of your crate!
So, if you sell them for 10€ a bottle at your bar in Bruxelles, ex TVA you'd win +/- 200€ on 24 bottles. Cost ex TVA would be around 150€. So you win 50€ for half a day of work to get them...
Of course you could share the driving cost with going to more abbeys in the area etc., but still.

@@timotheusvanesch3959 you are right, we have to factor in fuel, costs, time, shipping, etc. I was thrilled to try it and honestly would have paid more.
