Another excellent review, with the perfect balance of rules explanation, your impression, and even some references to how other players in the group reacted. Thanks so much.

It would nice to see an updated review featuring the Atomic Bonds upgrade, it fixes alot of the problems whilst making the story telling component of this game really shine.

I no longer have the base game, nor I’ve any plans to reacquire it. I’m sure the expansion is an improvement, but this game just left me so cold I really have no desire to give it a second chance.

Funnily enough, the game that Fallout reminded me of the most was Merchants and Marauders, with all the roaming around a sandbox, accomplishing various objectives for points. However, in Merchants and Marauders, there's always a way to get more points. Compare this to the Fallout starter scenario, in which during our game we reached a board state where there were basically no more points "on the board" and the only objective left ended the game and made sure whoever ended the game lost the game (we had all gotten into factions by then), so no one wanted to do it. So in the end several rounds passed with basically nothing to do but complete the couple of quests out that didn't even give any points themselves. Again, compare to M&M where you can get a point almost every turn if you're efficient enough. In all, I definitely agree with you and would say that any future expansions, in my opinion, would do well to make victory points more accessible to everyone. Until then, if theme's all the same, Merchants and Marauders scratches the "sandbox points race" itch much more effectively.

I liked the video just for the Twilight Imperium reference. Also super excited to see you review this. It's been on my radar for a while and I have come to trust your recommendations.

Very good review. I'm a fan of the video game, and I was extremely interested in the theme when the boardgame was initially announced. But as I read more and more preview articles, I had concerns that the game would be more fiddly than I'd enjoy. And you've just confirmed that, so I'm glad I saw your review before I got it. I think it would be amazing if they added the story telling system to Dead of Winter as an expansion, or maybe Eldritch Horror 2nd Edition

I cannot recall if you are a co-op fan but check out Defenders of the last stand, its a Post-apocalyptic cooperative game in the vein of Defenders of the realm. I dont even know if its in print though. But if it is and you can find it cheap its cool.

I like co-ops, though they're not my favorite. I've head Defenders of the Las Stand is pretty cool. I hope to check it out one day.

I am so, so, so glad to hear you say this. I bought my copy at full retail in November. I played it twice as a three player, and three times solo, and sold it in January. So many parts of this game are so great, but I just can't stand the artificial time limit of the game with the dual factions. Absurd. And fiddly.

I demoed it at Gencon last year and wanted to love it so much, im a big fan of the IP. But I felt it was a little, meh.
It did a few things i didnt like, for example almost being penalized for exploring (unless they changed rules), I hated the combat. and overall it didnt feel fallout to me. like if I could find it on sale id buy it for like $30, but outside of that i feel its a massive letdown.
Sidenote, how do you like New Angeles? Im toying with grabbing that, Android Netrunner is my favorite card came ever (Criminal/Jinteki). I hated Android (not a deduction game more of a make the evidence point to my buy, was a bummer). Do you happen to have a review for New Angeles?

No. I will though. But Celeste wants nothing to do with it so I need to just plan on doing it when shes out of town this summer.

A negative review from TDG! It's a first! Has he ever done a negative review before? I'm sure he has. But what are they?

Paranormal investigation, Extra Extra, Cross Hairs: Testing Ground, Age of Conan, Blood & Fortune, to name but a few. Generally I try to think of the audience the game will appeal to, even if it's not my cup of tea. Generally I only really come down on a game if I think there is something mechanically wrong with it, or if I just can't see the fun on any level.

I agree it is important to recognise that different games are for different audiences. It's when it's not just a cup of tea issue, but mechanical or unknown potential pleasure points. I shall look forward to attempting to find your unknown potential pleasure points...

You should definitely play the video games, probably in order from 3. You’re probably right about the fiddleyness and the combat could be better. Also the stories can stall. And I absolutely love fallout, new Vegas and 4 are definitely top 5 games for me.

    • @TheDiscriminatingGamer
      @TheDiscriminatingGamer  6 років тому

Perhaps one day I will try them, but probably not while I'm in school.

The Discriminating Gamer they may have lowered my GPA a bit. Whatever you do, try to go into them as fresh as possible. Not knowing the entire situation but discovering it is great. I think you’ll like New Vegas the most, but the other two are great for American history buffs.
