  • WAR! War never changes my friends! In this episode we'll cover the Rules Overview for Fallout: The Board Game by Fantasy Flight Games! Join me as we bridge the gap between the Solo Setup video and the upcoming playthrough to prepare ourselves to head into the Wastelands!
    Fallout: amzn.to/2K7rSBl
A BIG thank-you to the community here at Rolling Solo for all your feedback on the prior video to determine which character from the the five available choices to use during the playthrough! I'm excited for this 'rad' choice!
"Fallout is a post-nuclear adventure board game for one to four players. Based on the hit video game series by Bethesda Softworks, each Fallout scenario is inspired by a familiar story from the franchise. Survivors begin the game on the edge of an unexplored landscape, uncertain of what awaits them in this unfamiliar world. With just one objective to guide them from the very beginning, each player must explore the hidden map, fight ferocious enemies, and build the skills of their survivor as they attempt to complete challenging quests and balance feuding factions within the game.
As they advance their survivors' stories, players come across new quests and individual targets, leading them to gain influence. Who comes out ahead depends on how keenly and aggressively each player ventures through the game; however, if a single faction is pushed to power too quickly, the wasteland will be taken for their own, and the survivors conquered along with it." - FFG

It's a really fun game, but it took us ages to figure out as the rulebook is really vague in a lot of areas. Had to watch your video before it really made sense to us, so thanks for that :D

A lot of board/card games are like that. They cover some things, but other very specific things that come up are completely absent. Like I remember playing a game that according to the rules told us to do something that in-turn cause another thing to happen, but the two things kinda contradicted each other. So, we just collectively decided to make a choice of which thing to activate.

    • @RollingSolo

@@PaulDanler Agreed! You should see how many kinks I run into during the course of a rulebook and questions that pop into my head as I try to interrupt and show off games on camera. It's a tad insane haha. You'd like it's a 1:1 process but it's far from it!

Thanks Colin! I'm hoping as a villain I can muster some extra support out there in the Wastelands. I'm going to need it! Ya, this game has quite a large backstory and history across many video games. If you haven't played them it can greatly take away from the experience. At least that's the consensus from BGG forums. But this makes sense for big IP's. Similar to something like Imperial Assault for anyone who hasn't seen it. Although if anyone hasn't seen at least one Star Wars movie...they deserve a verbal lashing haha ;P

I also agree a verbal lashing is REQUIRED for anyone who has not seen a Star Wars movie, followed by an early birthday present that includes Episodes IV-VI :) . Regardless, good luck and may the force be with you! Wait . . .wrong game! You get the idea. . .

It was actually verily difficult for me to follow you as you explained the battle line sequences with the VATS die and having to know if it's me taking damage first or if I'm giving the damage first. Then, figuring out how to move my pegs accordingly on my "pipboy". It's just too much.

Hey man, so this is kinda late but I just got a Fallout board game and I love your videos and found this one and wanted to see what you think about the game. Anyway I have a question about a combat and maybe you know whats correct in this situation. So if I fight aggressive enemy and don't kill him and he does not go into hiding, does he attacks me automatically next round? I mean before my actions, because he is aggressive? (sop not because of agenda cards but just because we are in the same spot and he is aggressive)

great videos for getting started, i did one quick solo run on the commonwealth with just the vault dweller and not sure what to think of the game just yet...
seemed really easy with him because i could just skip all the combat constantly? i mean you have up to 4 moves a turn and the enemies would only partially activate and move 1 space at a time
so it was just a blitz around to the quest objectives before they cornered me... unless i missed a rule or something
and the levelling system seems a little weird, like you could not focus on it at all because it doesn't really do anything? except maybe using it to get duplicate letters so you get a perk?
anyway got new california and the co-op expansions so going to give them a roll, with running more characters at once to see if it makes it any harder

The Vilified icon is on the opposite side of the Idolized
    Well Rested's opposite is Addicted.
Also the Super Mutant icon is a double-helix. It's for DNA and stuff like that.
The PERKS you can CHOOSE from MUST match the special token that you selected that you already had.
Nope, the shop is ALWAYS supposed to have 4 items in between the survivor's actions (With the exception of certain encounters.)
The Symbol is a Vault Door, or really just the typical icon for Fallout.

    • @RollingSolo

When you use the explore action to reveal a new map tile, any monster that the tile calls for is face up (Learn to Play, page 6, right column, third paragraph). If you kill a monster and spawn in a same type monster on a map tile, that monster will be face down.

I've played with 2 and 3 and think the game works much better with 3. I don't see how it would work solo but I'm ready for you to prove me wrong.
That being said, I don't see the problem with the Add mechanic for more people. Sometimes it might not make logical sense (that one player finds something he shouldn't know about), but FFG uses this mechanic well in other spots. For example, in the Commonwealth quest line there's a quest where your supposed to search the wasteland for a particular item which, through the Add mechanic, is hidden in the encounter deck. This started a frantic search last game as each of the players wanted to be the one to find the item to advance their faction so rushed out into the wastes to search. It worked well mechanically and thematically.
I guess the only way FFG could address this situation is for some cards (but not all) to award the finding player an inconsequencial card or token, like the Circumstancial Evidence cards from Mansions of Madness. When the Added card is found, have different text or options based on whether or not the finding player possesses that item.

    • @RollingSolo
      @RollingSolo  6 років тому

Hey Hedgehobbit! Great comments here. I agree with you that 2 and 3 player counts are a nice sweet spot for solo play. I did this off camera while learning to play the game. For the playthrough I wanted to show the true solo aspect of using only a single player and thought this would better show the progression for the quests and encounters as we move along.
When the race for the item occurred were you playing 2 or 3 characters solo or with 2 or 3 people? I would think with 2-3 people, it would be quite the rush to find that quest item.
It wouldn't surprise me if FFG addresses a couple outstanding things in a future expansion. I really like your suggestion about awarding the finding player an inconsequential card or token. On the train of new ideas, I recently also saw a very cool suggestion someone on BGG had about being able to equip armor for a particular faction and instantly gaining loyalty to it while wearing it. I'm sure rules for that would be needed to be flushed it out in regards to being able to do this through agenda cards already, but thematically it would have been a perfect fit.
Thanks for letting me know your thoughts! Cheers!

    • @Hedgehobbit
      @Hedgehobbit 6 років тому +1

It was a game with 3 people. The game came down to the last quest with me losing by failing a die roll by one pip. But we were playing that the game ended when one faction won, rather than by points limit. Winner is just the player with the most points. I think I'll stick to that method from now on.

At around time marker 20:50 you rolled 3 dots so since that mutant has a gun you take an additional dot so its 4 dots total because you have no armor. So 4*3 is 12.

@@Zorant0Zero that’s not necessarily true. that only applies if the super mutant attacks you from an adjacent space and you don’t have a ranged icon yourself. If he were in the same space as the super mutant during the attack, the ranged feature would not add damage.

I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone. The rules are a hot mess and its basically unplayable. Waste of $60 for me.

Hey Thomas! Thanks for your thoughts on this. As valid as anyone else. Everyone has a different take for sure.I didn't find the rules too bad, only a couple spots where it wasn't perfectly clear. FFG will likely release an FAQ in the near future. Thanks for watching!
