The thing about the petulant whiny hero is that they have to have at least some redeeming qualities to start with for us to even care about their character arc.
Ah see the idea is they gave him character traits that are relateable to the viewer. And they figured the target audience is a bunch of whiners with no redeeming qualities. Genius!
6:10 THANK YOU! I've lost count of how many times I've been told that I can't criticize a character because they're supposed to be whiny and petulant in the beginning and will get better. Also, characters who do this well in my mind are Chihiro from Spirited Away (she isn't overly whiny and is more sheltered and spoiled than petulant, plus she actively works towards goals and doesn't complain about them) and Luke from Tales of the Abyss (again, not that awful and major developement happens a little less than halfway through the story that has him mature a ton).
Let's not forget Media Blasters released Invader Zim on DVD back in the early 2000s. In retrospect, that was like Lex Luger having a good main event match - surprising to see it happen, but most of the time both Luger and Media Blasters didn't try.
Maybe it's a good thing the name Madara is now forever associated with a character from Naruto, since this anime was some weird acid trip if I've ever seen one.
I mean, it's an RPG, but Tales of the Abyss played the "brat MC" arc pretty masterfully. I think the key is that they realized that Luke was annoying and, rather than ignore it and pretend the audience would enjoy it, they instead used other members of the cast as a foil for him, at least, until his character develops enough for him to actually be likeable. Until then, well, his spoiled behavior is a lot more bearable when the older characters practically roast him for it.
Loved your Discotek Media jar joke because it fits so appropriate for Discotek! I love Discotek, but they're a company that get great anime titles but still have weird or odd choices that they brought to the states.
exactly and that's why he's relatable, he starts out as a childish annoyance but through his interactions with everyone around him, he starts to be become a better person while still keeping his snark and wit.
@Inquisitor Thomas Because you asked nicely... Is there any anime character stronger than Madara Uchiha? And I'm referring to the Rinne-Tensei Madara Uchiha with the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and Rinnegan Dojutsu (with the Six Paths ability) equipped with his Gunbai and control over the Ten Tails and Demonic Outer Path Statue, a complete Susanoo with Hashirama Senju's DNA implanted in his chest so he can perform Wood-Style Kekkei Genkai and Yin-Yang Release Ninjutsu as well as being extremely skilled in Taijutsu and Bukijutsu.
Did you forget the Ultima games of 1-3? Because the space-time continuum was at stake in one point from the incomplete Chaos Serpent. Also the Skull of Mordain who could kill anyone with a single thought. And there were some others that could basically destroy a planet, if not an universe or entire plane of existence.
FINALLY he does a review of this OVA. I remember running into it and I kept thinking to myself; "You know what, this looks like the kind of anime BennettTheSage would review", and finally he did.
Its so good to see you back Sage Love your vids so much. I Would love to see someday sage doing a review of my personal fav Space Dandy , since he already did Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo it be cool to see what he thinks of Watanabe two other so far most recent shows; that and maybe Wolf rain too perhaps.
6:15 Gendo I know this is discussing your son's character, but don't look so down. Also it just hit me. If Madara is basically a robot how can he be thirsty or hot? Seems like his tantrum makes even less sense when you think about it.
The problem here, is the problem you have with most Anime that is adapted from a Manga, it either covers up to a certain point, and then ends or you have an Anime only ending, which is mostly never good.
Jared Kent Its not happening. Gabe announced on Twitter that he was no longer part of Anime Abandon. Given the silence from both and how Gabe never got a goodbye, I'm guessing it wasn't a friendly split.
yes! the coming of age character is something thats so annoying when done wrong. titus in ff10 comes to mind. i feel like renton from eureka 7 is an example of that character trope being done fairly well. or at least hes not annoying.
I enjoyed Anime licensed by Media Blasters. In Australia, anything from Media Blasters is an instant American Import for me as often Madman Entertainment and other Australian companies never brought those licenses compared to what they brought from ADV/Sentai Filmworks and of course Funimation.
1:30 I was mostly familiar with Anime Works because of Magic Knight Rayearth. It is one of my top favorite animes. The logo itself was cool. I like the Oval one at 1:29-1:30 than the one with the Gear at 1:32
Oddly enough, Sasori came to mind when you mentioned the title and the guy being a literal robot/puppet boy. Heck, I was expecting the red hair guy to have that name.
At least SRW Alpha made Shinji grow a pair of balls and a set of spine. Then again, coming in contact with the combined aura of Bright Noah, Ryoma Nagare, Kabuto Kouji and other badass 70's Super Robot pilots can do that to you.
Media Blasters did get a hold of Bakuman, from the creators of Death Note, a few years ago. Which could of been a feather in their hat, but after only 7 episodes they cancelled both the dub and the release.
Unless I'm mistaken, Madara's English dub was first released in 2003, so if anything it would be the other way around. Now Alister, on the other hand...
honestly if there character has some semblance of childishness can work, I mean some manchilds can have a bit of charm to them, heck I tried for years to keep my persona at 18 at least, but I decided to go a bit older then that, though he does act a bit childish, like fanboying at his favorite media or whatever, he still is responsible towards what matters in his life, kinda like a male Usagi from sailor moon
It's like they thought a bunch of twists would make the plot interesting, but somehow the plot twists itself into a straight line down the tubes. Herman aught to have been the protagonist, with her own coming of age story. SuperTwit is then made an unreliable ally who is strong, but reckless and his past comes with a lot of baggage that ensures more of the evil king's professional killers trying to hunt them down.
Ok, lemme get this straight: You have a scene with a shoe-horned in time travel plot in which the protagonist and his primary love interest are left floating out in the middle of nowhere with no conceivable hope of rescue, and they are saved by a spaceship coming out of thin air to play deus ex machina so we can have some false tension before we move on with the story... And you DON'T make a Final Fantasy 8 reference? Sage, my man, I love ya, but there's a difference between not reaching for the low-hanging fruit and just straight-up dropping the ball.
OVAs from the 1990s are often a few episodes to sell the manga. Step Up Love Story was only 4 episodes to help sell the Manga called Manga Sutra. Another Media Blasters from their Anime Works label. Surprising that Step Up Love Story is not in their Hentai section with their Kitty Media label.

Yeah he is not a child in the manga, at all, both he and Kirin are proper childhood friends etc, Kirins main role in the manga is helping Madara with unlocking his gimmicks for battle. Overall the setup is there for the enemy to actually have a chance against Madara in combat as he generally destroys them in seconds. The manga is about killing the generals, getting a piece of his true body as he kills each of them, replacing his gimmick body like it was magic each time automatically.
Yo! Sage my boy! I assume you have watched the 2nd season of Sealab 2021 with the Directors commentary track? The cast reads a comic book/novel one of the creators made in high school called: The Dominators! It goes on for most of the season and is one of the funniest things ever!

Sage Lives... Glad you escaped the fire man, Happy to see you uploading again
"Miroku is right here, inside of me."
Funny, usually it's Miroku who wants people inside of him.
Bada-bump! _Pish!_
Bow Chika Bow-Wow!
What
cheezemonkeyeater
I get it!
It's because Miroku has a black hole on his hand!
IS FUNNY!
lawl

That bunny is like the Lemongrab of anime.
Khadharphak OOOOONE MILLION YEEEEARS DUNGEOOOOON!
Just wanted to write that, but you were faster haha
This castle is in... Unacceptable! Conditionnnnn! UNACCEPTABLLLLLLLLE!
@ 13:30, LMAO!... Oooh Sage. (Classic Sage..) .... Hilarious. You never cease to be grossly entertaining and hilarious my friend.
Jesus Bro. That bleeding from the mouth while smiling sketch was terrifying
I once saw Judge at a flea market and thought to myself, “Wow, this looks like something Sage would review.”
Well, SONUVABITCH IT’S GO TIME.
Your anime analysis are on point I love them !!!
3:49. Thank you sage for that...Wonderful image. I won't see Trix the same way again, and I'm glad.
Good to see you back! Happy to see you're well after everything you've been through, my friend. Keep up the good work.
Media Blasters was also able to get Rurouni Kenshin a second english dub. (The one that aired on Toonami.)
Why doesn't he have more subscribers? This channel is awesome ridiculously underrated.
8:35 You are literally the Nostalgia Critic of anime, and I love you for it.
Loved your Discotek Media jar joke because it fits so appropriate for Discotek! I love Discotek, but they're a company that get great anime titles but still have weird or odd choices that they brought to the states.
Glad to have you back Bennett. You are pretty good.
Sealab 2021 is the best anime.
Cypher Caliban certianly better than Cory in the Haus.
Glad you are alright Sage and hope that you and everyone else are safe
Love your work, I can't wait to see what lies in the future
The moment when a new Anime Abandon is uploaded
i'm glad you're back, sage. i never get tired of this show.
Τhe funny thing (for me atleast) is that madara kinda sounds like "μαντάρα" which in greek literally means "mess"
ΝΙΚΟΣ ΝΙΚΟΣ that was probably an accident media blasters arn't clever enough to do that
You know how you can make a completely unlikable and childish main character work?
SAO Abridged.
Wow I find fans of sao:a everywhere. Awesome! but I think the reason Abridged Kirito works so well is that he's surprisingly relatable.
I think the reason it works is because, unlike the original Kirito, Abridged Kirito actually has flaws, character growth and depth.
exactly and that's why he's relatable, he starts out as a childish annoyance but through his interactions with everyone around him, he starts to be become a better person while still keeping his snark and wit.
Cant forget about Don Fluffles to, his chat with Kirito works so well.
I don't speak cat but I'll take your word for it.
So EA have fucked up so bad that even Sage is making fun of them and their business practices
Oh man that ventriloquist face you made was both terrifying and hilarious.
All right Naruto Fans get your references out of your system now.
Madara origins story is terrible and now in the awesome way
Did you forget the Ultima games of 1-3?
Because the space-time continuum was at stake in one point from the incomplete Chaos Serpent.
Also the Skull of Mordain who could kill anyone with a single thought.
And there were some others that could basically destroy a planet, if not an universe or entire plane of existence.
One Punch Man?
Masterge77 Saitama.
Hope everything is good with you after that horrible fire :(
FINALLY he does a review of this OVA.
I remember running into it and I kept thinking to myself; "You know what, this looks like the kind of anime BennettTheSage would review", and finally he did.
Your brother the older brother is your brother.
CWDTrixie Robin: Hmm...I dunno, I think we should be enemies.
And the brother of the sister of the cousin of the mother of the moose is my brother.
Dude you were not alone on the rabbit character, before you said anything in the review I had literally chuckled and said I love this character. Lol
Y’know, I was JUST thinking about how much I could go for a new Anime Abandon episode right now!
Damn, that Sage is one bad Madara...
_SHUT YOUR MOUTH!_
But I'm only talking about Sage.
_We can dig it._
I see what you did there with that Dexter's Lab reference. ;)
Who's The Man... That's gon' riff the shitty animeeeeee
Sage
Who's the man that's gon' blindside you with WWF references?
Ben The Sage
Its so good to see you back Sage Love your vids so much. I Would love to see someday sage doing a review of my personal fav Space Dandy , since he already did Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo it be cool to see what he thinks of Watanabe two other so far most recent shows; that and maybe Wolf rain too perhaps.
Man, that scene where his arm shoots the sword into the monster's head.
That's some 'Blood Will Tell' shit right there.
Also sweet diss at EA.
*My only Madara is the badass, Madara Uchiha from Naruto.*
Also no wonder I recognize his voice, its Bakura from Yu-Gi-Oh.
I'll admit the Lex Luger joke killed me
6:15 Gendo I know this is discussing your son's character, but don't look so down.
Also it just hit me. If Madara is basically a robot how can he be thirsty or hot? Seems like his tantrum makes even less sense when you think about it.
Oh god - Ted Lewis, why?
Thanks to the voice being used, now I can't unhear/unsee some of that dialogue coming out of Bandit Keith's mouth
The problem here, is the problem you have with most Anime that is adapted from a Manga, it either covers up to a certain point, and then ends or you have an Anime only ending, which is mostly never good.
And then we get Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, which miraculously manages to avoid both problems and remains a fantastic show all throughout.
Its because they pitch thier mangas to directors who dont have a clue of what to do with thier mangas so they switch around completely sometimes!
I’m still waiting for the return of Gabe
Jared Kent Its not happening. Gabe announced on Twitter that he was no longer part of Anime Abandon.
Given the silence from both and how Gabe never got a goodbye, I'm guessing it wasn't a friendly split.
Ah damn...
So, Sage is sitting in the room all by himself? That's so sad.... 😥
Darth Lazurus Oh no! That's terrible! I started watching Anime Abandon because I loved the dynamics between the two of them on Sage Vs. :/
What happened?
has bennet lose some weight ?
Right?! So i'm not the only one who noticed.
+Javarus Leary nope, people have been doing that for months
To be fair though he hasn't had the best time so weight loss is the least of his problems.
Roy S. Weight loss is a good thing, makes one live longer etc.
Ya but I was saying that losing a bit of weight was the least of Bennett's worries for the last few months
"Garaga"? "Madara"? What, do these creators think that by putting in enough A's to fill out a report card, it'll somehow turn the movie good?
Sure beats Gerege or Medere, or any other verbal diarrheas with the other letters.
Ps, we want/need a suave month
yes! the coming of age character is something thats so annoying when done wrong. titus in ff10 comes to mind.

I live for jokes shitting on Electronic Arts
3:52 If the Trix rabbit and Lemongrab had a love child.....this would be it 😐
So... Naruto, FMA, Inuyasha, Akira, possibly My Hero Academia (gimmicks = Quirks)... The references just keep piling up
Don't forget Evangelion.
oh god that rabbit has the soul of an adventure time citrus person & I LOVE it
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO!!!
Welcome Back Bennett!!!
Love the goatee. Good review as always :)
Media Blasters did get a hold of Bakuman, from the creators of Death Note, a few years ago. Which could of been a feather in their hat, but after only 7 episodes they cancelled both the dub and the release.
I like the fact that this is bandit keith's voice.
Unless I'm mistaken, Madara's English dub was first released in 2003, so if anything it would be the other way around.
Now Alister, on the other hand...
Thanks for the Blazing Saddes clip!
8:34 Fuck, i spilled my Coffe in Laughter! DAM YOU GENIUS SAGE!!!!
«Episode two on the other hand; whohohooho (Yugi boy)». That was some YGOTAS Peagus level shit right there 😄
I lost it at "Wee Wee Herman". I've now lost my license to laugh at anything from here on out.
13:23 Man, can't wait for my inevitable wisdom teeth operation and all the glorious awkward aftermath >•
It's like this anime was made as an example for Terrible Writing Advice's channel.
8:05 Hey, ain't that Ol' What's His Name from Tenchi Muyo?
honestly if there character has some semblance of childishness can work, I mean some manchilds can have a bit of charm to them, heck I tried for years to keep my persona at 18 at least, but I decided to go a bit older then that, though he does act a bit childish, like fanboying at his favorite media or whatever, he still is responsible towards what matters in his life, kinda like a male Usagi from sailor moon
I have to give a bravo for that blood effect, that legitimately made me felt uncomfortable XD
13:24
Sage, what'd you use for the fake blood? That scene was hilarious
You think it was fake??
Well, too much power of friendship can do that to any man who's allergic to such cheese. But i'd think Sage would be pretty tolerant to that stuff.
What's up with the audio in this review? There's noticable breaking when I put it in full volume!
I have such a huge crush on Bennett, nearly had a heart attack when the fire was reported on the news. I'm so glad he's okay! ^.^
I miss the batshit crazy ass anime of yesteryear. Also, nice Lex Luger reference.
Ok, lemme get this straight:
You have a scene with a shoe-horned in time travel plot in which the protagonist and his primary love interest are left floating out in the middle of nowhere with no conceivable hope of rescue, and they are saved by a spaceship coming out of thin air to play deus ex machina so we can have some false tension before we move on with the story...
And you DON'T make a Final Fantasy 8 reference?
Sage, my man, I love ya, but there's a difference between not reaching for the low-hanging fruit and just straight-up dropping the ball.
Wasn't media blasters the company that released DVDs of Golion and Dairugger?
WELCOME BACK!!!!
Holy shit i read the manga a long ass time ago ive been looking for it for YEARS!!!
The ventriloquist bit killed me xD
13:22 - Nice Gangrel impersonation there, Sage. All you needed was the Goblet.
Wait if the main hero is a soul in a robot body what the hell does he need food and water for?
Narrative consistency in anime? When has that *EVER* been a thing?
10:49 Is it me, or does he sound like Tracy from Pokemon?
yeah Sealab 2021 will never leave my heart either
the character design is kinda cool
Could u 'reupload top 20 giant robots?
That's my favourite of his videos.
This OVA seems to only use some of the character designs and ideas from the manga overall.
In the manga in fear of Madara killing his father, he was chopped up into pieces, his body parts where then given to the main villains generals to increase their power, Madara and the main female protaganist are also childhood friends, the skirt flipping is in the manga, but unlike the anime the entire scene ends up being different just due to how Madara acts.

I always smile when someone refrances Sealab 2021
Yo! Sage my boy! I assume you have watched the 2nd season of Sealab 2021 with the Directors commentary track? The cast reads a comic book/novel one of the creators made in high school called:
The Dominators!
It goes on for most of the season and is one of the funniest things ever!
Where iz the footage from 1:45 from
2:35
Benett:Hence Madara
(Cues Akatsuki theme and clips of Madara being badass)
Benett:NOT *THAT* Madara !!!
Audience:Oooooh 😭😭😭😭😭
4:41 Swordsman: Oh would you look at that, I seem to have impaled myself.
The Madara famicom game soundtrack is excellent
8:28 is that the VA of the general in the original Rome: Total War?
Also you gotta review Queen's Blade sometime!
Shinji is not exactly as bad as you make him out to be. But this does feels like how a plot of naruto would go if then condense it into this
I just realized. Good coming of age story. Kamen rider gaim.
Main character isn't annoying. Is honestly a good person but is forced to learn some harsh realities of life and has to grow to not fear or despair from them but face them head on.
Granted gaim isn't also an anime but eh.
You’re a pretty interesting guy. I’m subscribing.
Hey Sage, think you'll ever do Locke The Superman?
I didn't want to comment about your facial hair last time, but not only do you look better this time, you look good.
I agree, I don't know if I just adapted, but the mustache looked really off last time.
