      Haha, I would be super excited if this was 1995. You could try running AROS on it, it's SUPPOSEDLY compatible with the Amiga but if you want a classic system that will work, UAE.

      I have owned almost every Amiga model under the sun, and wouldn't be caught dead giving Cloanto a penny for work done in the 80's and early 90's by Commodore. If he/they eventually take over the development responsibility for the successors of AmigaOS 3.1.4 from Hyperion and actively carry that project forward, then of course I would fund such development and exclusively purchase those Roms.

    • @another3997
      @another3997 3 роки тому +4

      @@uberdude2555 We get it, you want stuff for free, because historically, you once owned Amigas, and therefore you feel entitled to the Kickstart Roms. Despite the fact that you sold them or gave them away, you still have the right to do what you want? Quite legally, Cloanto has paid money to OWN the rights to that Rom code and can do whatever they wish with it. Do you apply the same logic to the new owners of your previous cars, houses and anything else you once owned? You just go and help yourself when you feel like it? It's old, outdated stuff, so it should be given away freely? Tell that to the owners of anything antique... see what response you get. Your sense of entitlement is misplaced. If you want to use something, have the decency to not steal it.

    • @tahustvedt
      @tahustvedt 3 роки тому +10

      @@another3997 The previously owned cars point is absurd. It's the kind of argument the movie industry uses against copying software. I bought a 3.1 Kickrom license for my A500 with a pre-flashed EPROM, but I don't think it's great that someone bought the rights to sell them today when the alternative would be perfectly acceptable abandonware downloads. They don't even have an easy way to buy more licenses online. You have to buy an OS or buy pre-flashed EPROMs from a vendor. I just want the license because I can flash my own. I bet you have pirated games on your Amiga. If you were around back when you probably pirated games then as well. If you didn't you were very out of the ordinary.

    Bit of a story here Dan. I got my first Pi, a Pi2 B+ a few years ago with the express purpose of Amiga emulation. Set it up, gave it a go and ... that poor thing was underpowered for smooth Amiga emulation. So, it got turned into a PiHole, and has been running faithfully in that capacity every since. But this Pi 400 is the thing I've been dreaming of. Your video pushed me over the edge, and I've got one on my xmas wish-list. Hopefully wifey-Claus thinks I've been a good boy this year....

    I was so impressed with this tutorial that I ordered an Rpi 400 from OKdo 3 days ago, turned up this morning. Couldn't find any microSD cards spare so I thought I'd take a crack at using the official Rpi Imager to flash RetroPie to a USB flash drive instead. That worked. Thought I'd try and boot from it without doing a firmware update, figuring as the official docs said you need something after August 2020 and it's about 3 weeks old. That also worked. I haven't had a chance to put ROMs and things on yet but my trusty wired Xbox 360 controller was as plug and play as Dan's tutorial led me to believe, so I'm impressed that the whole thing works substituting a microSD for a USB device straight out of the box. Good work all round really!
    Just thought this might help people wondering about picking one up, and I'd say between this and LibreELEC soon to be updated for a good Kodi build (and potentially an easy way to dual boot with the USB and microSD as viable boot devices) you've got a stunning little multimedia device for, in my case, a shade over £65 with free delivery as I already had all the other gubbins lying around for power, a mouse etc.
    P.S. although you can enter the WiFi SSID etc with the gamepad... just don't. With the kind of default case-changing alphanumeric gibberish ISPs set by default it's not fun. 😂

    When I set up my retropie. I used a usb drive with a few folders set up in win 10 (instructions are on the official retropie website). You then insert the drive into the pi and it creates all the rom folders. You then transfer your roms into the relevant folders and reinsert it into the pi. It will autoput all your roms in the right place. Bit easier than messing around with the command line.

    Another great video thank you very much Dan.
    I would like to ask if anyone would know what would be the best TV or Monitor to use with your Raspberry Pi 400 because I got one lately and I'm not getting any sound from the TV I'm using. I went through the different settings, but nothing.
    Thank you very much for your help, and I hope you're all doing ok in these uncertain times. Take care. Cheers 👍

      If you want to simulate an Amiga, there are a few emulators:
      www.zophar.net/linux/atarist.html
      Always wanted to get an emulator for the Atari ST on the Amiga back in the day, but I don't think one was ever made. Had a MAC emulator, but it was pretty worthless since anything I could run on that worked on my Amiga natively anyhow.

    The PI-400 is looking to be the go to platform for most emulators and also for a lot of users seeking to use less energy opting to use approx 20-25 watts rather than 150-200 watts with a desktop PC.

      Saving money on your hydro bill is something I'm alway interested in.
      I use to use a computer all day. I would have 3 or more running sometimes. Now there barely used and these new SBC are taking over and I like the savings.

    Where did your kickstart roms download to from Google Play? I'm on a Mac, and I had to select an Android device (I don't own any) before installing. I can't see where the files have downloaded to (?)

    If you don't have an extra Pi 4, all you need to do is edit cmdline.txt or rc.local after burning the image and add the update & upgrade commands to the boot sequence, then remove it after the first boot on the Pi 400 itself.

    My first computer was an Amiga 600 (still have it) our family computer at the time was a 386 PC which had Norton Commander on it.... Obviously Midnight commander was designed to look exactly like that so I've just had a Nostalgiagasm..... Getting one of these!

      It was not designed to look like it, it is a direct clone (port) made by Miguel de Icaza in 1994 for Posix.
