    The traction engines and the steam rollers look like beasts slowly coming alive as the herd starts to move.

    That hunslett roller was the weirdest steam traction engine I have ever seen with the boiler on an angle like that. Looked liked a great rally 👍 lovely English autumn rain

    • @althejazzman

      Does anyone know why it had an angled boiler?

    • @Cezaelizabeth
      @Cezaelizabeth 10 місяців тому +5

      Confusingly, it's not a Hunslet (owned by the now Hunslet company), it's a Wallis & Steevens Simplicity. The angled boiler is more effective for keeping water over the crown.

    OK which one of you thought they'd be real smart and bring three helium balloons and a pennywhistle to the Whistle Off?! _Gods_ my ears.
    Also that blue Leyland lorry is lovely... and while I very much adore Walker's rather than Lorna Doone when it comes to shortbread (TBH I can't _stand_ Lorna Doone, that stuff tastes weird as heck to me) -- the locomotive namesake on display there is absolutely _adorable_ in so many ways and makes me go "Squee!".

    I visited a lovely steam centre, and I had the pleasure of being allowed to drive 2 different traction engines around a circle, a cute smaller one and a big 25t one that you had to climb up! Steering them was as easy as on the Triton work ute I drive, I must say the big one must be where the phrase 'land yacht' came from with a massive steering wheel that felt like it didn't do much but it was easy and amazing fun to be commanding(ok really just steering~) 25 tons!
    Probably not the big one, but the smaller one I would love to have and just drive

    If I’m correct, around 12:46 just before the transition / as the transition was in progress I heard 19B’s whistle respond to all these. I think that’s around the time we blew her whistle anyways 😅

    I’ve noticed an uptick in kids going “toot toot” at steam events.
    There should be signs saying “no toot-tooting”, like the “no stairway” sign in Wayne’s World guitar shop.

    Don't know if it's still there but 30+ years ago Stowmarket had an agricultural/rural life museum and they had a steam weekend once a year with working agricultural steam engines doing the harvesting as well as threshing and bailing. We had an annual membership and regularly visited - they had a working mill as well - and would visit the annual steam fair in Norfolk.
    Always loved steam engines - grew up playing with dad's Mamod steam engine and my brother got a miniature working traction engine you could steer via a rod to the front wheels for Christmas one year - I was so jealous, I got a doll and there was simply no comparison in my mind - and I always loved playing with them. Dad's gone now but my inheritance - or some of it, - will be used to buy myself my very own Mamod model steam engine, the same one dad had if I can find it. Fascinating things and they have something that draws me to them. Funny but they're irresistible.

    Sadly I couldn't make it as I was drafted in to help run a layout at the Swindon Model Railway event. We did however have a mini steam engine gathering with two traction engines, a steam road roller and a miniature steam traction engine at the event. Also during every hour they would sound the large steam whistle that would call all the workers to the GWR factory.

      I've always thought, especially when some heritage railways are rightfully woesome about the price of coal, if an electric conversion kit could be put into a steam engine to "convert" it, so to speak! I don't know enough about steamers at the moment to really figure much out, but in my opinion it has the potential to be the best of both worlds... 😊

    I always find it strange that steam trains hold no real interest for me and yet put me in a field full of traction engines, stationary engines and the like and I go all gooey and school boy again. I love these things, yet put them on rails and I lose that feeling......I'm just weird lol.
