As an Eagle Scout, I mourn the loss of an institution that was fundamental in my growth - by requiring me to become better and reach high ideals. The Boy Scouts of America will be greatly missed

I too am an Eagle Scout and I feel exactly the same way.
Look into Trail Life. It was started by former Scoutmasters and Eagle Scouts to counter the BSA losing their way. It'd be a great opportunity to volunteer and help mentor the next generation of boys without the woke nonsense.
My son joined last year and his confidence is growing and he's spending precious bonding time with his dad. :)

I’m 19 I was a Boy Scout. Got to live through them allowing girls in. Trust me majority of Boy Scouts I know are always going to call it Boy Scouts and we all think it’s so wrong to allow girls in. I still support Boy Scouts you just need to find the right troop. Boy Scouts is the best thing I’ve been a part of other than church!

Wouldn't this "problem" be easily solved by providing three different group choices? All boys, all girls and mixed. That way everybody can put their child in the group they are most comfortable with. This also plays into the free market and consumer choice. But providing easy solutions to dumb problems does not give right-wing grifters culture war BS to make content out of.

This sort of “inclusivity” probably won’t bring in many people, but it’ll drive away the base who does want the traditional values. I have a 14 year old lesbian friend who goes to boy scouts for the better programs and I can tell she is good at it and loves doing it; it's gotten her so many opportunities and skills that I wish I had, and you would deny her those because she's a girl??

As an Eagle Scout from the early 2000s, I'm appalled. One of my biggest hopes in life was to be a scout dad, not happening now.
You can still be a Scout dad. You don't have to follow Shapiro's marching orders.
I am presently a Scout dad and got my Eagle in 1999. Bring your kindergartner to Cubs, you'll find little has changed at that level.
At the troop level, girls and boys are supposed to be in separate troops. Seeing a girl troop giving maximum effort to move their sled at a Klondike Derby quelled most of my issues with girls in Scouts pretty much instantly.
I DO, however, have issues with what they consider "morally straight" these days. And the fact that there's a DEI merit badge, Eagle required.
So, I'm not sure I'm going to push my son to reach Eagle, but for now he's about to enter 2nd year of Webelos and having a great time.

@@thezuch7342 best thing I can tell you is to become a registered leader and get active. Heck, don't even wait for your own kids, find a local troop or pack and get started.
The pack/troop and local district/council are way more impactful upon the Scouts than National.
I'm a former Eagle Scout. Any group that lowers its standards, tolerates immorality, and requires a DEI merit badge is morally bankrupt and undeserving of support. Period. Sadly, the Boy Scouts of old is DEAD and rightfully so.

The scouts have been having low attendance numbers since pre-Covid. They’ve been battling low attendance numbers, which is why they allowed girls in to the Boy Scouts and the Cub Scout program.
However, Boy Scouts of America is an umbrella term for the whole organization. There are Explorers, Stem Scouts, Ventures and Sea Scouts too. All of these organizations have had girls in the groups for more than 40 years.
The Troops and Packs are still separated by sex.
They added the ability for girls to be in the Troops and the Packs to allow for leadership training for young girls. This in turn bolsters numbers.
I am still heavily active in scouting I’m Eagle Scout from 2007 and have been an Assistant Scoutmaster since 2014.
The Scout Oath, the Scout Law, the Scout Moto the Scout Slogan have not changed.

As the first officer of a Trail Life troop in rural Ohio, I am so grateful for the fifty BSA members who stood their ground in 2013 and split their troops off in order to stand for the traditional values of the original Boy Scouts.
I had Scouts that are now officers, pharmacists, engineers and electricians. Managers in many business. As a former Scoutmaster I am very sad about the state of the organization.
It really is sad … when my son entered the scouts approx 2018, he was surrounded by positive male influence …. By the time we left 5 years later , I was the den leader (no willing dads ), the troop leader was female and every single den was being led by moms …. We left

My grandson achieved his Eagle Scout this year. He’s been accepted at Virginia Tech and into the Corps of Cadets. He has goals, focus and direction. He knows he’s a guy! I could go on.
He loved being a Boy Scout. And Boy Scouts (plus a stable two parent family) showed him how to be a man in today’s crazy world.

I was in Boy Scouts for all of my middle school and high school life. When I started, nobody cared all that much about DEI because common sense existed. I just aged out the past September and I got my Eagle rank. But scouting has fallen so far since it was founded. I live in California, so it’s a little bit more… intense over here. But many scouts in my troop all disliked the idea of scouting changing its mission to be “more appealing” so we all started nicknaming ourselves the “multi gender scouts of America” because of its absurd nature. The very essence of scouting is to train up boys into leaders so we can be ready for the real world and nobody ever said that we were bad because girls and gays weren’t in the program. Our whole goal was to help other people and “do our good turn daily” (the scout motto) to help others then ourselves. Also what happened to having a program that gives boys an outlet for them to let loose and learn life skills? Another program that has fallen prey to the radical blue hair agenda, I’m going to be sick 🤢
Man, when was the last time you've seen or spoken to someone under 25? I'm glad you got a good experience from Boy Scouts, but why should me or my peers need to have a worse experience because of our gender or orientation? As long as we would uphold the agency, knowledge, and morality of the boy scouts, neither of those should matter. Scouts is a program just like cub scouts, explorers and venture. Just because it takes 8 years to complete doesn’t change the nature of what it is.
The oldest inclusive youth club is the 4-h . It originated in the early 1900’s and has always included girls and boys whose participation is by interests not gender. The 4-h club is still a shining example of teaching good values, the four h’s stand for head,heart, hands and health, interest include animals, cooking, sewing and all things agricultural. Anyone can enter any category.

I’m a Boy Scout. There is nothing wrong with girls wanting to go camping, but let boys be boys.
My Scout Troop did Klondikes (winter camping) at several GSA facilities. Some of the nicest improved camping facilities I've ever seen.
Don't they have Girl Scouts also? Once we here in NZ accepted girls in Scouting it went down hill from there...true

To the two in replies claiming the girls would be at risk for victimhood, I suppose that's possible, and I am speaking from anecdotal/personal, but as a 15 year old guy, I have a close lesbian friend who does Boy Scouts and it doesn't seem like she's ever experienced that; she's gotten so many wonderful things from being a Boy Scout, same as any of you. It probably does come down to each troop and their leadership and learning.
Membership started dropping off when they started letting girls in. I was a girl scout and it gave me time not to worry about boys in my life. 🤦🏻♀️

We were called Girl GUIDES.
Girl Scouts have gone downhill. They should have adopted more of the outdoor aspects that the BSA had. That was why girls wanted to do BSA. There should have just been an additional branch of BSA for girls, and not blend them.

My mom used to volunteer on the board of a crisis center called “Women’s space”. It was for women and girls who were victims of domestic abuse. She ended up having to leave the organization because they started letting boys and men in, who identified as women and girls. So women who were fleeing abuse and r*pe, were forced to share their space with men in wigs. 😒

I and my two brothers were in Boy Scouts. My sister was in Girl Scouts. At no point did anyone entertain the idea of young boys and girls dressing like the other.
My sister before 1 year wasn't afraid of bugs. She grew up around 3 boys and while she did "girly" things also did "boy" things. She is not damaged b/c of "gender labeled interests".
Yes, some of "roles" taught are outdated but the skills are relevant.

Being LGBTQ does not make someone a "pedo or groomer". Those terms are used disgustingly like rhetoric to suit an agenda. Besides, you can only get into Boy Scouts as a Scout if you're in the age group, mostly teens. Furthermore, there's always been perps in Boy Scouts faculty, it just depends on your troop.
I am 64 years old and was a boy scout and loved it. I now have three grandsons and would never advise them to join. My daughters want their sons to grow to be men.

As an Eagle myself I’m disappointed to say the least. It was initially mentioned years ago that the intent was to make it easier for parents to avoid having to take their kids to both boys and girls scouts separately. I.E. modern parents are lazy and don’t understand the value of having boys be separated from girls for their own personal growth. I could not imagine getting the same amount out of the program with girls in it. It’s going to fail and it’s a shame. Girls scouts is also a shame, they let corporate greed dismantle what was a comparable program education wise to the Boy Scouts.

It’s such a different program my girls grew up camping with me. There all girl troop gets them out camping and developing leadership in ways I can’t do solo. Girl Scouts doesn’t camp once a month the most any here do is twice a year.

@@Eigelstein it would be hard to implement 3 different groups when the participation rate of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts has been reducing every year for a long time due to growing lack of parental involvement in their kids lives. That’s a big reason why Boy Scouts allowed girls in order to improve their numbers. So unfortunately it’s a little more difficult to fix than just adding a third group type if you can even count Girl Scouts as a group anymore either.
So the issue is membership not integrity of values.
I was in Boy Scouts for 7 years and achieved my Eagle rank in early 2018. I'm so glad I finished scouting and got my Eagle when I did. Originally I thought that, if I ever have young boys of my own in the future, I'd enroll them in BSA as well. But not anymore, not at this rate. I really hate to see how far they've fallen.

@@Eigelstein yes! In our town we have a couple of boys-only groups, a girls only group and a few mixed groups. I run a boys only group and whenever people call me out on why we don’t have girls (etc.) at our church, I just say that we would be happy to expand to offer a girls’ group if they would like to volunteer to recruit a group of 5 volunteers to run it, otherwise they can join one of the girls or mixed groups elsewhere in town. Nobody yet has volunteered 🤣.
As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Boy Scouts was integral to my activities almost on a weekly basis. We were constantly going camping, hiking, earning merit badges, and I earned my Eagle when I turned 14. The church was by far the biggest supporter of the Boy Scouts organization. When the church pulled out and officially disassociated with BSA because of this, the BSA lost a LOT of funding and participants. It’s sad to realize I’m the last generation of something that was so impactful to my boyhood. The BSA knows how to destroy a good thing.
My grandfather nearly cried when he heard they would change the name. He was a scout since the late 40's & taught me so much I hope they soon realize their grave mistake.

Former Scout here, here in Latin America we don't have any distinction between boys and girls we all learn the same so I don't see any trouble in America finally catching up.

Ben, I am a conservative father of a daughter. I hate woke marxist indoctrination. I celebrated BSA opening their doors to girls in separate troops but equal programs because the skills and ideals they instill I want for my daughter. My daughter is now in a troop and I am actively teaching her and other girls scouting and conservative values. This name change and "being their true self" however is BS.
So when "woke Marxists" teach children about the word from a specific perspective it is indoctrination, but when you "teach conservative values" it is not indoctrination. Yep, that pans out.
My church has the saying of we want to remove unnecessary barriers that get people to Christ. Over the past few years, my pastor has increasingly made the point of correcting people who say "we remove barriers" to specifically mention "we remove UNNECESSARY barriers", because that distinction is the make or break point to having the correct mindset and idea.

As an Eagle Scout for 5 years now, it was already sad that membership was down, as many of the things I know and apply in my life I learned as a scout. And now hearing this just devastates me.
I was a Girl Scout, so when I had kids I wanted to have my kids to have the same scouting experience--but I had boys. We joined a boy scouts and luckily found an all-boys pack. My husband and I lead the group and we just try to keep it as old-school as possible, but I hate what the scout office and higher part of the organizations has become.

Girls have been in scouts since 1972 in Canada. My daughter has been in since she was 4 or 5 (she is 13) now. There are probably more boys, but not by much. My husband is one of the leaders, and was a scout himself. She has learned so many survival skills. She could single handedly maintain our family if there was apocalypse. Why shouldn’t girls also learn these things. It is still sort of religious; they do prayers and such. The boys don’t seem to have a problem with girls and the girls don’t seem to have a problem with boys. They are equal and can learn and grow together.

Absolutely no one is against girls learning this stuff. There is no problem with girls and boys in the same troops but girls have girl scouts so they have the choice to be with or without boys. Boys really have no choice and that's where the problem is

@@deendrew36scouting program is not coed. It’s separate units that meet and camp separately. Some units try to bend these rules but in reality most don’t see the other gender in any program setting.
@@richardlocke3375 no, in Canada, Scouts have been coed since 1972. I fixed my comment to specify Canada. We do still have Girl Guides here, but it isn’t a great program for learning survival and camping skills. Scouts is where it’s at for that!

The difference is that no one wanted the change in the program. There was no outcry to be progressive in a program that was traditionally conservative.
Also, most Scout Programs around the world don't own several hundred square miles of land for their scouts. That stuff is expensive. That's the real reason for the name change. Not to be like the rest of the world.
I remember when the LDS church left partnership with Boy Scouts a few years ago. I'm very grateful they did, because now I don't have to deal with this garbage every Wednesday.

I learned a lot in Boy Scouts, and had a lot of fun. I also learned about patriotism and character. It makes me sick to my stomach what has happened to the B.S.A.

Try switching to Trail Life instead. Any Eagle Scout credits already completed will carry over, as it was created by former BSA Scoutmasters and Eagle Scouts.

Why is the name your hold up? Because girls could form separate troops and meet separately from boys? A national politician made a statement you don’t agree with because your party’s never done that? Before you share outrage understand what is actually going on. National punted gay banning to the local charter and that charter org can still ban any one for any reason. Yea the national politicians are losers but so is everyone who seeks leadership at that level in every part.

Please remember national is just a fundraising and publishing firm. The units have not changed. I’ve been involved in multiple units at several levels across several states for 15 years and it is the same now as it was then. Phones have changed more than this bs has.
Thank God I was in the scouts when it was still a great organization. It was one of my fondest memories as a kid.
Besides camping as a troop,
we travelled annually for a week
long camp at a permanent
Scout camp near St Joseph Mo,
and it was a BLAST...👈🤔...
They, in turn, had an indian themed "honor camper" organization, designed to bring older scouts
back after their lives began to
be filled with other things, and
that was a BLAST...👈🤔...
That organization, kept me
active in scouting until nearly
18 years old, and travelling
back to meet friends made
in previous years, from all
over the area...👈🤔...
Fond memories....and learned
a bunch...

I was in Boy Scouts until COVID-19 essentially shut down the troop and although I never got Eagle scout, this is upsetting to me
FYI, the courts gave the BSA an out - that they could manage their own membership heading off the potential lawsuits. But BSA caved anyway. I had been a leader over 30 years at the council level, and it's amazing how quickly the culture of the organization changed. The minute BSA added girls to Boy Scouting, it was like someone flipped a switch on.

BSA should be more embarrassed by the extortionary costs of their fundraising products, and how little of it goes back to the packs. $12 for a 3 ounce bag of popcorn. $25 for a bag of chocolate pretzels.
I was a Girl Scout for over 10 years and I’m so glad I was. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts each were so good. Boys learning with other boys how to be good men and girls with other girls learning how to be good women. Disappointing the Boy Scouts have fallen like this, I hope the Girl Scouts don’t follow
