Guys - 10K miles after doing this job I still have the same shifting problem, which I believe is a failing Torque Converter. This job did fix my AVG MPH reading on the dash, which was way off indicating a failed sensor. So, all in all I'm glad I did this job, but it did not fix my main shifting problem.
170k on my 09' Taurus. Noticed quite a bit of extra heat from the torque converter side of trans-axle recently. I've changed fluid over the years and that is o.k. Have fun mysterious intermittent stalls, sometimes, rough clunky gear changes, and gets stuck in first gear once in a while. Today it decided to act up again coming out of a parking lot. Before the "Gets stuck in first gear" option happened I heard a pop noise. From my experience with all these episodes I've had no codes present. My thought are if it is the torque converter you might as well go and replace the trans.if your going to go through the whole process.
Good point and thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm taking it in soon to my local mechanic and then will go from there. All I've had is the shutter between 40-60 mph as it seems to be hunting for the right gear. It's certainly drivable and I do so every day.
Hopefully in your case it's something less cost prohibitive such as a valve body spring swap out. I've seen some of those rebuild kits online, such as Trans-Go. Thanks for the reply, please give an update when available.@@DougMount

Thank you Doug for your video and investing the time into it. Just curious, did you have the odometer blanking, wrench icon and other things associated? Did you try any other things before doing this repair? My neighbor has a 2008 with 130K and lots of trans clunking and drivability issues.
No odometer blanking, no wrench icon, just a lurching around 40-60 mph on occasion as if the transmission was hunting for a gear. The only things I have been doing is regular changes of the transmission fluid to include adding in Lucas Transmission Fix a couple different times.

I took my time so it was probably 5-6 hours.

I noticed some improvement after this, however I believe I have a torque converter problem. Getting it diagnosed soon...
