Great work Paul. Really exciting to see this project getting underway. Although, there's a tinge of sadness seeing those homes torn down and thinking about the people who've lived there and their stories. But alas, the world moves on.
Thanks! - Yes it is a little sad, but sometimes this is necessary to build new stations. The other stations on the line have a much smaller impact on residential properties. It's mainly commercial properties. I'll show you all this in future videos.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - your VLOGs are informative and I’d say, your assumptions Paul pretty sound. And the link about the families affected by compulsory acquisition is a reminder that there’s a human element to all of this “progress”. So many people must’ve been displaced.
Hi Andrew, thanks! Yes absolutely! Of all the stations, Westmead has the most impact on residential properties. As I cover the other stations, you'll see that it is generally commercial properties that are impacted, but even these, often have a story to tell!
Still cannot believe the enormous gap between the planned Parramatta and Olympic park metro Stations. Half way between is a massive industrial and sporting precinct at Silverwater. Should be a station planned there IMO
Sadly here in Australia our transport planners mindset is how quickly can we get passengers from A to B...so their thinking is to transport people into the City as quickly as possible..adding more stations would slow that process..
Of course adding more stations would also add to the cost....they don’t seem to care that by adding more stations it also benefits hundreds of thousands of commuters who would have convenient access to those extra stations
They also could have stopped at Rydalmere for the Uni and an in between connection to the light rail. The interchanges on this line are terribly designed as they all require leaving one station and entering a different station. Most of the time benefits of the metro are going to be lost on these painful transfers.
Hi Stephen, Yes it is strange to have such a big gap between Parramatta and Olympic Park. Parramatta Light Rail (especially the planned extension to Olympic Park) will plug some of the gaps, but yes, this does seem like a wasted opportunity. Unlike overground lines, it's not possible to add future underground stations at a later date!
Excellent Video. Thanks Paul. Great service provided by Medical clinic, Hair cut saloon, Service station though they have disappeared they remain etched in my memory.
Thanks used to live in Westmead. The area changed so much since Light Rail now Metro West construction. Westmead was the origin of a railway line to Castle Hill and Rogan Hill, which go past Northmead and up Windsor Road. I think there are some old bridges in Northmead still to bear witness. Westmead as is enjoys a high frequency express train service to the city, and will be even better with the metro.
Yes it certainly has! I'll look out for those old bridges in Northmead. I think Westmead has lost most of the express services over the years. It is served by the T1 and probably a few Blue Mountain line trains in the peaks. Once the Metro opens, more express services might stop there.
Westmead Junction to Castle Hill Length: 1.4 km. Opened: August 1904 (tram), 10.7 km extension: 28 Jan 1923 (train). Closed: 31 Jan 1932. Lifted. The Rogans Hill line had its origins as a steam tramway which extended from Parramatta north to Castle Hill. This tramway broadly ran alongside Church Street, Windsor Road and the Old Northern Road. The railway, which extended the service, followed most of this route, except that it branched from the Main West line at Westmead and joined the original route at Northmead. It also extended north of Castle Hill to Rogans Hill. The line was never very successful, and suffered from competition with road traffic. Because it followed the road alignment, nearly all traces of the line have been obliterated in subsequent road widenings. One remnant is a concrete pier on the bed of Toongabbie Creek upstream (westwards) of the bridge carrying Redbank Road over the creek. In 1923 when the tramway was converted into a railway, a new loop was constructed running from Westmead which crossed Toongabbie Creek. The tramway pier is from this loop.
@@fittipaldi7326 It would have been extremely useful to many if it was electrified with telegraph pole stanchions like the Carlingford line and ran from Rogans Hill and terminated in the centre of Dural.
The existing Westmead station concourse was built during 1995 as part of the Fahey Government's station sparkle program at the conclusion of the period when the City Rail network was rebuilt. The loss of housing is a reasonable price to pay for the realignment of Grand Avenue in addition to the fact that a Metro station will be built there. Unfortunately though some double brick 1920s bungalows in Bailey Street have to go along with a few 1930s weatherboard places. Good vlog and walk around a surprisingly convenient and leafy suburb.
That's good to know. I guess the lifts were installed as part of this work in 1995 as well. Yes I did notice some of those older houses! - There were quite a mix of different properties. I'll be walking around Westmead again in a couple of weeks to see how Parramatta Light Rail is progressing.
It's really good that they've started working on the metro west that will connect parramatta to the CBD.& in 3 years it will be a worth wait to see how this be will finished & with the new trains running in the future.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Look out for the Parramatta Metro Station video which I'm working on now. Should be available by next week, possibly earlier.
Thanks Paul for another highly explanatory video. You really are a great help in understanding the design and construction process of each station on the various Sydney Metro lines. It will be interesting to see the road closed between the train station and metro station, and to see how a direct interchange will be formed. The current station will definitely need either an upgrade or a complete redo to accommodate the new Sydney Metro station and all the foot traffic that comes with it. It will certainly be exciting to watch how it comes about.
You're very welcome. Glad you found this video helpful. Yes I think quite a big upgrade will happen, possibly on a similar (or perhaps larger) scale than at Sydenham.

Hi Kevin, the owners got market value for their propertied and an $80,000 relocation allowance. I'm not sure what the arrangements were for businesses relocating, especially as they probably leased the buildings, rather than owning them.
Awesome video Paul, I’m curious to know what Sydney Metro trains will go here, will there be a special tunnel near Martin Place that can divert trains or will they have to order a special batch for the west metro?
Thanks! It will be a completely separate line with no integration with Sydney Metro City & Southwest line. Yes there will be a new batch of trains, and I'm sure there will be some modifications and design differences. The new maintenance facility at Clyde will look after these trains. It's quite common for metro lines to not be linked together. The same thing happens on London Underground and probably other metros such as in Singapore and Hong Kong. Most importantly, passengers will be able to interchange between metro lines at Martin Place as well as Martin Place and Wynyard train stations. I'll be doing a video on this soon.
This is really good. We’ll only be coming to realise its value in 10+ years. I wonder what will happen to the rest of the residential block and whether it will be turned into parks. If anybody builds new homes, it’d be interesting to see if any of the old residents would be interested in returning.
I suspect shopping Center and possibly a bus interchange with residential towers behind. Westmead shops are definitely only set up for locals. Hi Douglas, not yet, although there is a longer term plan to extend the line from Westmead to the new Airport. The new Western Sydney Airport Metro line from St Marys Station will serve the new airport. I'll be doing a video on this fairly soon.
Pity Paramatta Light Rail wasn’t extended a few hundred metres across the existing tracks to terminate between the new Metro station entrance and the old/upgraded Westmead station entrance to fully integrate the 3 rather than have the LR a fair walk. It would also generate more traffic after hours to make the area feel safer.
This could happen in the future. One of the advantages of light rail is that it is relatively easy and inexpensive to extend, compared with heavy rail or underground metros. There would certainly be some space within the construction site for a future light rail terminus.
What happened to the house that it’s now standing in Bailey Street did it get demolished along with the other houses what will happen to the Hawkesbury road with a medical centre and a barbershop
Hi Nico, everything on the north side of Bailey Road, between Hawkesbury Road and Hassell Street has now been demolished. And the barbershop and medical centre have gone as well. All the buildings within the construction area that were still standing when I recorded this video have since gone.
Hey transport vlog i just wanted to give you an update on what I saw when I was on the train and the train stopped at Westmead noticed that Alexandra Avenue in Westmead has not gone because I saw a Bus outside Westmead station picking up passengers and taking them to Parramatta
Hi Peter, thanks for that. I believe the plans have changed, and the metro entrance will now be on (or very close) to the railway bridge on Hawkesbury Road. And this means that the road alignment will stay as it is. I hope to do an update next year on this.
You said in 2023 tunneling will start between Westmead and Olympic Park. How long do you think this will take? And what about the tunnel from Olympic Park tig the city?? Has it started?
It will take about 2 years to build the 2 tunnels between Westmead and Olympic Park. A separate tunnel boring machine will start at The Bays and tunnel to Olympic Park. This is scheduled to start later this year. The tunnel to the CBD will be a little later, as the contracts have not been awarded as yet. I reckon probably 2023 or 2024 and this TBM will also enter at The Bays. I'll talk about this more in future Sydney Metro West videos.
I think a lot of those people who lived in those Apartments and house's would have been frustrated and cross that they had to move else where because the government bought the land for the future Sydney Metro Station in Westmead.
Yes I'm sure they weren't very happy! But this is what is necessary to have a growing city with much better transport links. It's quite easy to tunnel under existing buildings, but its much harder to build a station without removing the buildings that will sit above it.
The metro is generally to the north of the Sydney Rail alignment, but the metro station is to the south of the Sydney Rail station. Do you know where the tracks of the two systems cross over ?
Metro is underground so it’ll just go straight underneath as it lines up between Parramatta and Westmead. The current line travels north west between them.
Yes that's right. The metro station will be underground and the lines will go under the existing Sydney Trains lines just east of Westmead Station and then run under Parramatta Park.
Hi Chris, I've had to put these on the back-burner for the time-being, as there is too much happening elsewhere in Sydney! Last time I was there (about 2 months ago), there was a large acoustic shed, but not much else. They hadn't started excavating the station box at that time.

If the line ran as far as Blacktown station it could be used as an alternative to trackwork buses.
Yes it could!
The metro station will be underground and the lines will go under the existing Sydney Trains lines just east of Westmead Station and then run under Parramatta Park.
great job l liked it
Thanks!

Thanks Brett!

Is it common for telephone boxes to be offset at an angle like that? I've never seen anything like it before in the bush
I'm not sure if that's normal or not!
I’m waiting hear about Westmead metro station update???
Hi Chris, I've had to put these on the back-burner for the time-being, as there is too much happening elsewhere in Sydney! Last time I was there (about 2 months ago), there was a large acoustic shed, but not much else. They hadn't started excavating the station box at that time.
Ok thanks mate
you should get out to parramatta the whole car park is gone
Already have! Working on the Parramatta video at the moment. Quite a lot of Parramall has gone too!
