  • This is my first Sydney Metro Update on the new Clyde Stabling and Maintenance Facility for Sydney Metro West.
    It covers a huge area of around 380,000 metres, and contained a number of interesting (and not so interesting) buildings, many of which have now disappeared for good!
    Luckily, I've captured the vast majority of them on film, so you'll get to see them in this video.
    This includes Sydney Speedway (also known as the Valvoline Raceway), which closed its doors in April 2021 and now has a brand new race track at Eastern Creek.
    You'll also see the proposed track and building layout for the new Clyde Stabling and Maintenance Facility. And I cover in depth how the sidings will connect with the main Sydney Metro West running lines. This will involve using part of the old Carlingford Line trackbed, and then constructing a dive site at the old Rosehill Station.
    I'll also reveal the proposed changes to Kay Street and Unwin Street, along with what will happen to Duck Creek and A'Becketts Creek.
    I'll then cover the area north of Duck Creek which will be for the approach tracks and the new Rosehill Services Facility. This includes the heritage listed former RTA building. Find out if this will be staying or going!
    This ended up being a long video, but I think you'll find it interesting, perhaps even fascinating to see how an old industrial area is going to transform to make way for the new Clyde Stabling and Maintenance Facility and Rosehill Services Facility.
    Use the time stamps below to jump to the sections that interest you the most, or watch the entire video, so you don't miss any hidden gems.

    COVID-19
    Most of my videos are recorded several weeks before being edited and uploaded. I always follow the government COVID-19 advice and requirements that applied on the day of filming. This is why you sometimes see me wearing a mask and at other times you don't.
    Accuracy
    I do my best to make the commentary in these videos as accurate as possible by checking facts on the internet and other sources. However, sometimes the information isn't available, so I'll use my railway knowledge to explain something to the best of my ability. If accuracy is important, do check the comments, as other viewers will often pick up on things I've missed or any mistakes made. For older videos, things may change over time, causing some of the information to become out of date.
    Construction Sites, Maintenance Facilities and other Private Property
    All footage of construction sites, maintenance facilities and other private property is taken from a public vantage point. The only exception is if it's an open day or I have special permission to access the site. The iPhone's small lens and zoom function makes it easier to film through small gaps in hoardings or fencing, so it may look like I'm on site when I'm not! If you would like to know the exact filming location, then ask me in the comments.

    Hi Paul, I really enjoyed this video and I appreciate the work and research that you have undertaken to bring us this wonderful presentation. The magnitude of this project is unbelievable and I had no idea until now that the project was this advanced. The Parramatta Speedway was a favourite of my nephew and I often took him to the smash up derbies and the monster trucks which I enjoyed as much as he did. I lived in Guildford for a few years and I could hear the activity of the Speedway on Friday and Saturday nights while sitting on my balcony. I have been in Sydney since May 29th and returning to Wagga this Saturday but unfortunately I have had Covid during this time (my third episode of covid) and was really unwell. I apologise for not contacting you via email but hopefully I will be much healthier and more mobile when I next visit Sydney in October/November. I am looking forward to your next presentation (too professional to be a video).

    Hi Paul. The industrial rail network in that area was all connected to the Carlingford Line, those on the northern side of the racecourse via the Sandown Line. Industry to the south and east of Duck River/Creek, was connected to Clyde Yard. Before there was James Ruse Drive, there was Berry Street, and a very dangerous level crossing. Many terrible accidents there. Interesting origins of CHEP (originally Commonwealth Handling Equipment Pool) - born out of WW2 military logistics, and privatised in 1949.

      Great info Vlog, many thanks, 2 branch lines came off the Carlingford between Parramatta Rd and Rosehill Racecourse, 1 went into the Asphalt Plant via a unprotected level crossing, the second was at former main road that is now JRuse Dr(3 tracks in all) 2 for the C line, the branch veered off to east into the DMR location.

    Certainly a lot of buildings have disappeared. Most of them seemed quite old and not really visually appealing, and besides, at least most of the businesses were able to move somewhere else. So I guess the buildings won’t be missed as much. The construction site size required is quite big for a stabling facility, so that’s pretty interesting. It’ll be sad to see the Rose Hill station go, but I guess it’s contributing it’s part to a more beneficial project. Thanks Paul, marvellous presentation.

    The overall cost of the project must be eye-watering. They must be pretty confident it will turn a profit.
    Just the land acquisition cost from this video alone would be quite substantial, and that's before any actual work even begins.
    It will definitely be interesting to see the final product once the project is finished.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  2 роки тому +5

      Yes it is! However, it's not really about it making a profit, more about ensuring that Sydney's transport can cope with existing and future population growth. A big driver for this new line is the existing Central and Parramatta line being at capacity. Also it's hard to put a price on quicker journey times and less road congestion as people switch to the metro.

    Hi Paul, I enjoy your updates, especially this one as it brings back a lot of memories for me. I started work at these DMR premises in 1972, which in those days were the big mechanical engineering workshops, with the fitting name of "Central Workshop". The adjacent hotmix plant was also a DMR facility until privatised in the early nineties. A lot of innovative engineering was undertaken at these workshops as back then the private sector wasn't as developed as it is now.
    After 25 years I moved out of mechanical engineering and went on to build the NSW Transport Management Centre (TMC) which opened in 1999 in time to manage the Olympic Transport effort. I stayed on at the TMC developing the systems it uses to manage the transport network till I retired a couple of years ago.

I imagine some of them still live in Sydney. Their site there was occupied, for a time whilst parts of the original motorway was constructed. I guess the family may have had to move out of the site twice now

      Hi David! - that's interesting! I couldn't figure out when IMP coatings may have closed (or moved). Googling IMP coatings just brings up their old address on Kay Street.

    DEAR Paul , I am from Queensland and only been to Sydney 4 times in my life. I believe the likes of Downer and Hymix will stay on the basis of the construction will need concrete and ashpalt on the site . Those guys have that and will save the NSW Government some pennies as that infrastructure is already there. Thanks for the education lesson.

      Hi Russell, Good to hear from a Queenslander! Downer is definitely moving. There is a whole plan is place for that. I agree that HY-TEC concrete would be very useful if it stayed! Let's see what happens!

    Hi Paul. Once again a thoroughly enjoyable video on the massive changes being caused by Sydney Metro West construction. You should apply for a PhD from Western Syney Uni for all of your research and documentation of the development taking place in Sydney's west during these current years. By the way, how did you make the plane fly backwards at 25:20 ?? Keep up the great work Paul !!

      Hi John, glad you enjoyed it! Yes that would be an interesting idea. I know that students use my videos to help with their research. Well spotted! I reversed some of the clips to make parts of the video easier to follow. If you look very closely, you might spot a car going backwards too!

    Interesting, the Auburn rail servicing facility is just south of the motorway, from this site, but the fastest way to get there is probably a paddle along the Duck River.
    I thought it might be some sort of co location, sharing services, but a glance at the map indicates probably not.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  2 роки тому +3

      Hi Francesco! - I'm not sure if I'd want to paddle along Duck Creek! No it's quite a way from any of the existing maintenance facilities, but it seems to be in the right place, in relation to where the tunnels will be. The new Parramatta Light Rail Maintenance Facility will be in the Rosehill industrial area, so quite close by!

    downer used to be called clyde engineering, and they had a site close to clyde station. i can't find any good sources to confirm, but i would assume that the site where the current downer building on unwin st resides was where the old clyde engineering site was, and trains were definitely constructed there during the clyde engineering days

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  2 роки тому

      Thanks for pointing this out. I just checked the modification report and I missed read it slightly. Its actually 250 metres of the length of the realigned road that will be elevated! 250 metres high would be taller than the Chifley Tower in Sydney's CBD!

    Query - How can you demolish a heritage listed bridge - isn't the purpose of the heritage listing to legally stop any future destruction and to preserve history. If you can demolish a heritage listed building then the whole purpose of heritage listing seems quite superfluous and offensive to the original decision, its a complete oxymoron

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  2 роки тому

      Hi Stephen, It's complicated!, but basically a process has to be followed to consider all other options before a heritage building can be demolished. And in most cases, that process will find a way to retain the building, but not always. In the case of the Rosehill Railway Bridge, the alternative route for the tracks, would have involved redirecting major utilities (such as water, electricity, gas, or sewage) which would have been very expensive and disruptive. You can read more about this in this doc - majorprojects.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/prweb/PRRestService/mp/01/getContent?AttachRef=SSI-10038-MOD-2%2120211123T031939.185%20GMT

    Just get rid of the bridge & the station, 1959 is not exactly heritage. I was 12 years old when this was built & was modern then so what is the big deal. Heritage should be earlier than the 1940s.

      Hi Louise, that's what's going to happen! Quite a lot of Rosehill station has now been demolished. Good that the former RTA building is staying. I went back there a couple of weeks ago, and Downer and the cement works have now gone, along with the Sydney Speedway buildings.
