  • During 2020, the Sydney Metro West line between Westmead and Sydney CBD was approved!
    In this video, I visit the locations of the proposed Sydney Metro West stations. I'll reveal what is there now and show you where the station construction sites will be. I'll also share with you where the station entrances are likely to be.
    However, it's not just about the stations, I also visit the location of the planned stabling and maintenance facility at Clyde.
    I start at Westmead Station which will be the western terminus for Sydney Metro West.
    I then visit the site of the new Parramatta Station and show you what will happen there, including the demolition of the Parramatta City Centre car park which is planned for later this year.
    You'll also see some snippets of the Parramatta Light Rail work that is currently taking place.
    I then visit the planned Sydney Metro West station locations at Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North and Five Dock.
    I then cover The Bays station site. Construction work has already started here to enable Tunnel Boring Machines to start boring the tunnels between The Bays and Westmead from late 2022.
    I'll finish up by talking about the proposed metro station at Pyrmont and the ongoing process to agree the Sydney Metro West terminus station in Sydney's CBD.
    This is a really exciting project and I can't wait to give you future updates over the next few months and years. Do subscribe, so you don't miss out!

    Hi Paul. Well, you have made another fascinating and informative presentation of Metro West. The area you showed at White Bay between the old power station and Glebe Island was once known as Rozelle rail yards. The railway serviced the coal loader wharf and the wheat silos. The wheat silos can still be seen but they are no longer in use. This was a very busy port area until Sydney ports was relocated to Port Botany. The flat area adjacent to Anzac Bridge was used for many years by RORO shipping and for storage of vehicles. The old power station provided power for the trams and the railway. There have been plans to convert the power station into apartments but without success because of the amount of traffic it would generate in the local area. There were plans for a Metro many years ago but it was abandoned because the Metro needed to be deep beneath the harbour and the gradient needed to bring the trains from beneath the harbour to the CBD and to Rozelle where a station was planned beneath Rozelle at the intersection of Victoria Rd and Darling Street. I hope this is not too much information for you.

      Thanks John. Glad you enjoyed it. Wow! I didn't know there was a rail yard in the past! Interesting that the old power station powered the trams and trains too. Funny, I was thinking that the power station would make an interesting apartment complex. It will be interesting to see what the future plans might be for it. I do remember a Metro plan about 10 years ago that included this area, so it must have been the one you mentioned. I lived in Drummoyne at the time and a few properties along the Victoria Road closed and then the metro plan was scrapped! I suppose the harbour can still be a barrier, even when creating tunnels underneath it. It's never too much information! I always appreciate your input! - It helps make my videos better and I know that other viewers enjoy them too!

    The locations of Pyrmont and CBD stations were announced today! Pyrmont station will be located between Pyrmont Bridge Road and Union Street, providing easy access to Pyrmont Bridge. The New CBD station will be called Hunter Street. There will be entrances on the corner of Hunter and George Streets, and also on Bligh and O’Connell Streets. So it looks like it will connect really well with Wynyard Station, Martin Place Station and Sydney Light Rail. Exciting times! - Here is a link to the scoping report - rebrand.ly/SMWCBD and video - ua-cam.com/video/6oCL0MiQ_NU/v-deo.html

    It's going to be great to be able to walk to The Bays station from Balmain; just hope they preserve the power station and limit high rise in the area. White bay has historically been a port/shipping area, and as you've seen Glebe island is still quite active in industrial shipping. The power station was used to power the trams and trains in the 20th century I believe.

    • @TransportVlog

    So exciting to imagine the scope of redevelopment around the site of each new station. Planners clearly have a comprehensive vision of how to improve communities for the future by integrating stations into each community.
    It’s in sharp contrast to how things are done here in the US where projects languish in political hell and planners suffer from small ideas.
    The light rail network here in Sacramento (just two and a half lines) was developed with stations located in industrial areas or single family neighborhoods with a parking lot or two. They serve only bedroom communities thus have limited social or economic benefit. Unbelievable!
    I won’t even get into the dilapidated state of the rail cars nor the surliness of the staff. How I wish I was back in Sydney where I grew up!
    Thanks for another thorough review of what’s to come.

    Glebe island was an old dock that ran around the Balmain peninsula, Glebe peninsula, through to Darling Harbour.

      All good. Learnt a lot of this thru my late grandfather and family who worked for former Freight Corp and have a few maps (somewhere, have to find them) showing freight line maps in Sydney.
      The like meet up at Dulwich Hill where the L1 station is which used to connect to freight tracks to go to Port Botany and to the west where the disused track bridge connected to now Port Enfield but formerly known as Delec station near Cosgrove road in Enfield where there is a drive way up to former offices and warehouses that was originally used for UGL and Downer.

    Hi Paul, thanks for sharing all this interesting information. How far with the current Parramatta station be from the Metro Parramatta station? Also, will both stations be called Parramatta? From what I see here, this new Metro line doesn't seem to connect to the Bankstown line. Having the Metro going through Five Dock and Pyrmont sounds interesting. Anyway, take care. Robert.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Robert, I think its about a 10 minute walk. I'll map and time it and include it in my next Sydney West update video. It will be called Parramatta Metro Station. It will connect to the metro to Bankstown in the CBD, but it would probably be quicker to get the train to Bankstown from Parramatta.

    • @RGC198
      @RGC198 3 роки тому

      @@TransportVlog According to the map, Bankstown is on a separate line joining to the Metro West line in the city. From memory, the Bankstown line continued on to Lidcolme and connected with the Western Sydney standard train line. I remember using this to occasionally get across to Petersham, rather than go to Redfern and change trains. I could also go to Parramatta by changing trains at Lidcolme. Are there any plans to have a direct rail connection between Bankstown and Parramatta? Incidentally, after Sydnham heading into the city, will the Metro trains go through St Peters and Erskinville, or will those stations be for standard trains only?

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  3 роки тому +1

      @@RGC198 Yes that's right. Bankstown will be the western terminus when the City and Southwest extension opens. So the Sydney Metro line will run from Tallawong, via Epping, Chatswood, CBD and Sydenham to Bankstown. There is still a regular service from Bankstown to Lidcombe and that will continue once the Metro opens. I'm not aware of any plans for direct services between Bankstown and Parramatta. Sydney Metro will go underground after Sydenham Station, with the next station being Waterloo. Erskinville and St Peters will transfer to the T4 line being served by trains from Hurstville, Cronulla etc and going to Bondi Junction. Hope this helps. Paul

      Yes it is strange. I reckon it's still soon enough to get this changed, if the local residents, businesses and council want it badly enough. Two extra stations were included on London's Jubilee Line extension following a successful campaign from the local councils. I do believe the Parramatta Light Rail will cover some of these areas, but it's not quite the same!

    The city station must be at Martin Place to allow for interconnecting

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  3 роки тому +1

      That would make sense, and also has more space than other parts of the CBD. It could also interchange at Pitt Street, but space is at a premium there.

      St James is the easiest site can be underground mined from the unoccupied concourse site, no site resumptions.
      Site shedding can be placed on a closed St James Rd and part of Hyde Park.
      Bore a large single tunnel between Bays, St James under Market St at a depth of 35 metres to go below Sydney Trains lines, Sydney Metro.
      It's a direct path to a easy station site at Pyrmont in Union St between Edward and Harris St's.
      It's clearly very difficult to weave this line under the number of large buildings at Barangaroo and the Wynyard area,
      Hunter St is very narrow and has tall buildings on both sides, a station here is going to be prohibitively expensive requiring demolition of many tall buildings.
      Martin Place would have to be built as a terminating Station before reaching Castlereagh St. Both Sydney trains and the Metro have deep stations here
      A station at St James would allow a future extension to the Northern Beaches, with a 1.7 Kilometre track fall to the Harbour allowing 135m of depth at the Harbour allowing a hard rock tunnel to be built.

      @@TransportVlog Will never happen! Northern Beaches residents are notoriously known for not wanting a railway line to their area because they're afraid of all the Westies coming to infiltrate 'their' beaches. It will eventually be extended east to Randwick, although I wouldn't be surprised if they connect it to the Airport line instead and then have it take over the local T8 tracks to Revesby

    Bad news about Horwood Pl carpark closing. They just closed the Riverside carpark to build the Powerhouse Museum. Parking in Parramatta especially when the NRL & A-League are on will be horrendous. Bankwest Stadium only has a small carpark. Yes I know, come by public transport but that's not convenient for everybody if you not near a station.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  3 роки тому

      Yes it will make it harder to drive into Parramatta. With Light Rail and Metro, hopefully people that do not have a local station will drive to a nearby station and catch the metro or light rail for the last bit.

    A shame there couldn’t be more tunnel to save those lovely homes in Westmead. We’ve already lost so many lovely houses in the inner west for more roads. Plus other areas have had loss too.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  3 роки тому +1

      These are always difficult decisions to make. Even if the station was underground, it is likely that the construction required to create the station box would have involved losing these homes. I think the only way to save them would be to have the station somewhere else, and then you would lose the interchange with Westmead Train station.

    I know this is an old video but I am just so unsatisfied of the plannings of the Sydney metro stations. For Example Olympic Park metro Station SHOULD instead be expand from existing train station and provide direct cross platform with the EXISTING T7 lines!!!! is EXTREMELY dumb to just have another station build literally next to it but not parrallel to the existing platform for transfers as what they wanted to envision the area to be a residential and commerical district instead of just hosting events. Take HK MTR as example, they are just so integrated with cross-platform interchange when possible. IS a waste of oppotunity there and im just extremely disappointed, not to mention the weird planning of the new CBD station which are so close to existing lines instead of expanding to for eg DARLINGHURST / SURRY HILLS / USYD/ where theres NO Actual rail systems. Im just so confused on whats NSW gov and syd gov been thinking in their mind. literally dumb and waste of project potentials. Is so saddening to see this happening through my eyes. let me do it and i can propose a way way better solutions for syd transportation future.

      I'll talk about interchanges between metro and train at Olympic Park, when I do a video on this station, which will be later this year. Sydney Metro West is being reviewed by the new government, so it might change a little and there will be a tunnel stub at Hunter Street to allow the line to extend east and or south in the future, and that would well include Darlinghurst, Surry Hills etc.
