To be honest, I never saw an antagonist in Mashiba, I'd even rank him my second favourite of the whole anime. He indeed is flawed - we can't get past his anger issues and cleptomaniac attitude - but hey, he's a true protector for his younger sister, a hard worker and the fiercest warrior imaginable. Mashiba isn't just a man, he's THEE man.
Imagine being Mashiba Ryo, the guy trains hard to fights his own demons to protect and be strong enough for his sister, in boxing is unstopable, then fights Ippo who is not good at social skills(really dumb) but almost rip his left arm with his barehands, then meet his little sister and both fall in love each other.
Ippo has obviously never been to the hood before. Because if I ever saw a door open with nothing but darkness behind it and someone telling me to come in, my ghetto spider sense would tell me to go the fucking other way!
Mashiba and Ippo could've been best pals because ippo was A dork and Had no friends on his school, Mashiba is anti-social and is avoided by everyone cause he's a scary fuck(well ippo changed) but it would be awesome to see an episode where ippo and mashiba are just hanging out.
Closest we came to seeing them both have camaraderie was defending Kumi, the one true thing they both share, is their love and protectiveness of her... It might happen in the future, they won't be cracking jokes any time soon. But I can see a future of Ippo wanting to marry his sister, and Mashiba in his cold broodish way, give him his consent out of respect knowing all these years he's been good to her....

Sawamura arc, another that explains their past, this anime scene, and first time Makunouchi in Mashiba's place.
Funny enough, Itagaki becomes his best friend and is the only one not afraid to tell it straight to Mashiba (besides obvious other boxers as or more powerful than Mashiba like Sendo and Takamura). They releate well since they are both protective of their sisters.

So he's also boxing to prove them wrong. Which is pretty reasonable. But like I said, he still finds enjoyment out of destroying his opponents.
