RIP Anton Furst (May 6, 1944 - November 24, 1991), aged 47
You will be remembered as a legend.
Batman had great Art Direction.
Kim Basinger and Mel Gibson looked phenomenal that night. They would make the sexiest couple of the 90's. I'm so glad they got their well-deserved Oscars. I adore Glenn Close too. I can't believe she doesn't have an Oscar. She deserves like 3
They both really would have! Beautiful people
In my opinion Mel would have been a better Batman than Keaton. Mel was offered the role but had to turn it down due to scheduling. Sad because Mel looks like he came straight from a Bruce Wayne comic book and his chemistry with Basinger and Michelle would have been amazing
damn mel was sooo handsome!
Love his eyes
Good Lord, Mel was such a stud cakes back then! Whooah.
Rest in peace Anton Furst...such a well deserved Oscar.....the film looked amazing!!!!
It's so sad he committed suicide...I always wonder why
@@petersmithyy4556Halcon
Anton Furst had separated from his wife and begun taking Halcion, a sleeping drug that had been banned in Britain due to its possible side effects of amnesia, paranoia and depression. His drinking also became more of a problem. He was scheduled to check into rehab in 1992. On the night of November 24, 1991, he told his friends he was going to the car to fetch his cigarettes. Instead, he jumped off an eight-storey parking deck.
@@jwelch5742His father, an alcoholic, had recently passed too.
Even detractors of the 89 Batman film love Anton Furst's Gotham City.
I know that's the first oscar of heroes movie. Batman is the cultural legacy!
Tim Burton's masterpieces always succeed in every way especially in their set designs
It's almost destiny. If a Tim Burton film gets an Art Direction Oscar nomination, it's gonna win. Batman, Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd, and Alice in Wonderland have all won.
What a great artist. The art direction and production design on the 1st Batman film is incredible
Excellent!
Furst sadly committed suicide just a year after this as he couldn't find directorial work and struggled with substance abuse. RIP.
oh mab
Anton Furst began taking Halcion, a sleeping drug that had been banned in Britain due to its possible side effects of amnesia, paranoia and depression. Drugs and alcoholics are nothing but trouble because It's a waste of money, make people miserable and ruined their life.
ok
It's 100% true and I'm not idiot. I know everything about Drugs and Alcoholics. It say at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drug and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoholism.
I thought it was cos his love Beverley D'Angelo chose Al Pacino over him. I read his friend was checking him into the hospital and he left to get something from the car. He ended up jumping off the top floor of the parking garage. Wonderful set designer and all around genuine dude. RIP
Superb Art Direction in Batman. The art deco look, the neo noir influence, the punk element, all done so well, to say nothing of Wayne Manor and the Batcave. I love the costumes in it too.
Batman should've been nominated for more than just Art Direction. More specifically, Score and Supporting Actor for Nicholson.
@Reginald Wilson No not best picture. If Do The Right Thing and Glory didn’t get nominations then definitely not one for Batman.
Kim Basinger went to bat for "Do The Right Thing" - respect.
Absolutely heartbreaking what happened to Anton.
Batman has great art direction.
Can't believe Kim Basinger threw shade at the Academy on Oscar night 😂
i think she was exactly right and credit to her for doing it. "Do The Right Thing" was the jam (and gem) of 1989. It was definitely worthy of a Best Picture or Best Director nomination.
Culprit LA I absolutely agree. Do the Right Thing is a masterpiece, I'm just surprised she said that lol
@Reginald Wilson I agree. Unquestionably the best movie of that year. One of the worst Oscar snubs in history.
The cast of batman should win awards because this movie was so prestiges 10-08-20 🔥🔥🔥❤😎
Anton Furst's Gotham City was (and is), by and large, the single greatest interpretation - He would have killed it with Batman Returns, had he lived to work on it. Bo Welch's designs were far too stagey IMO and the German Expressionistic "Dr. Caligari" influence was misplaced. Then again, lots of shit was misplaced in Batman Returns... lol!
Misplaced? Nonsense. Batman Archives vol. 1 (1990) introduction by Rick Marschall, "Once again, the touch of Kane and Finger. Strange props (a favorite device of Finger), failing shadows - was reminiscent of the Surrealist German movie The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari...and could be just as nightmarish. The City - that backdrop which was sometimes a mood setting frieze, sometimes an enveloping or even choking atmosphere that mirrored the twisted preoccupations of the villains."
Arnold should've said 'Ice to see you all!'
Fun Fact: Mel Gibson was actually offered the role of Batman for Batman 1989 but sadly he was too busy with Lethal Weapon. I like Michael Keaton but I can’t help but think how much better Mel would have been as Batman especially since he is basically exactly what comic Bruce Wayne looks like. And Mad Max is already very similar to Batman.
Don't know, Keaton was really good and held his own not being dominated by Nicholson. Clean and Sober was a big turning point for him.
@@lw3646 Keaton was amazing but he just never looked or spoke like Bruce Wayne. Mel Gibson has the more leading man rugged look that would take the movies to different levels. Keaton would have made an amazing Riddler had Burton made a 3rd film
Mel Gibson : Real Superheroes Never Wear Spandex Tight
Glenn deserves a few Oscars not only one.She is a real movie start.
My thoughts exactly! Glenn delivered so many outstanding and great performances through the years, Oscar worthy performances. She should have won for ''Fatal Attraction'' and ''Dangerous Liaisons''.
More than agree !!!She makes you feel take inside of the drama....but what we can do?
Enjoy life. What a beautiful choice.@@adaacosta770
Please upload Charlton Heston and Norma Aleandro from Buenos Aires on this same ceremony! I think they presented the Documentary awards.
This also says of the brilliance that is Tim Burton and his incredible work. Though I also love the Art Direction for The Abyss to!!!
Please come to Oscar for more presentation we like you Mel Gibson
1990's Hamlet. A forgotten film if there ever was one.
Yeah, Hamlet with a beard just doesn’t work
Not so many things in world that are as beautiful as Kim in her mid-30's
Best Gotham City in a Batman movie.
The first CBM to get a Oscar.
No, superman 1978 will not be considered since it is special achievement award rather than formal awards. Batman opened the Oscar gate for CBM in 1989 itself.
Thanks for the video! And please Academy, give Glenn Close an Oscar! She deserves more than anyone! Unbelievable that such an astonishing actress like her has never won a Academy Award. I still believe someday Glenn will triumph at the Oscars! Thanks!
Glenn Close had already won something else than oscars, she won 3 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Special for Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Damages in seasons 1-2. You can't make the Academy voters to tell them vote the person that you liked, I'm the only person agree with Academy Award voters pick.
she win an Oscar if the film people voted for it at the next award of the academy
sly Cinéma The Academy voters has different opinion than us, I just agree with oscar voters pick.
She should've won for Fatal Attraction by a landslide.
She should have won for ''Fatal Attraction'' and ''Dangerous Liaisons''. Those were performances of a lifetime.
Toss up between 'Batman' and 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen'. Visually both films have really stood the test of time.
DC = Oscars
Batman should have also won Best Original Score and Best Costume Design.
BATMAN RULES
Fun fact: Anton Furst was under contract with Columbia, and wanted to find a way to work on Batman Returns. And Burton just sort of unceremoniously cut this guy off, just stopped taking his calls, and this was where he was doing a lot of work for personal friends, and professional relationships. He was just cutting ties with people sort of inexplicably. And unfortunately, he had substance abuse problems. He was supposed to go into rehab and was going to check himself in. And then one night, he just decided… to jump off a roof instead. He committed suicide. It was a month and a half after realizing “Oh, so they don't want me for this next Batman movie.” He and Burton had never had a chance to reconcile. Burton just stopped speaking to him. Furst had no idea what happened, he spiraled into this depression and that's how it ended.
(Obviously, I'm not saying he died because of what Burton did to him, Furst was a very troubled guy. I guess it's just because Burton is famously a guy who avoids conflict. Like he had the producer of Batman Returns fire his agents for him so that he can sign on with a different agency. Like he just doesn't want to have those conversations. I think Burton had probably already decided “I just made Edward Scissorhands, I want the designer to reimagine everything because I don't want to make the same movie again.” And rather than trying to let Anton Furst down, gently, it was just like “Or I could not talk to him at all and then eventually he'll figure it out.”)
peter over there,,,,, was he high?😂😂😂
Jack Nicholson should have been nominated for "Best Supporting Actor"!!! He played the Joker brilliantly and was worthy of getting into the top five, it's a pity that he didn't get it !!!🤡🥇🏆👏👍 God bless him !!!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
why he's placed in supporting? he's an obvious lead and the star of the movie. why must antagonist character be placed in supporting? not all antagonist are supporting.
My truly favorite hero
Interesting how Arnold has that Batman theme playing behind him.
When I was a little kid and my dad was gone traveling on jobs, I used to think Mel Gibson was my dad and he was at the oscars lol. Now I can see why my teachers and lunch ladys and my mom drooled over my dad lol, cause he looked alot like Mel Gibson back then XD
As a kid I thought they were weird, now it makes sense.
Is your dad single? Asking for a friend.
Please, Academy, upload when Richard Sylbert and Rick Simpson won the Oscar for Art Direction for Dick Tracy (1990).
Anton Furst Great Artist
Batman vs The Abyss. That was a hard decision.
Batman was such a phenomenan yeesh
Mel Gibson is a gentleman when he was young
I actually thought that was HUGH JACKMAN at first!
Increiblemente guapo
Mel was actually considered to play Bruce Wayne back then and I can definitely see it.
Don't get me wrong -- we all know how things turned out, but he him standing there really does resemble a comic-accurate Bruce.
I like Keaton but Mel would easily be the greatest batman of all time. Keaton would have fit better in the Batman and Robin film
He was...pissed as newt there, was'nt he?
Anton Furst died a year after getting the Oscar.
Moana Simpson and Mel Gibson.
If any of those had won, I wouldn't have disagreed.
Non psycho mel!
Batman won its only Oscar!
Kim Basinger looks hot here.
Kim Super Hot Hot 😍😍😍 and little Sally
Something marvel will never do, win an Oscar.
spider-man 2 won best visual effects and black panther won 3 awards

@@ronaldmcdonald2817 I guess so.
Glenn close is hell beautiful here
I can never grow stubbly beard as Mel Gibson here I can see why women swooned over this guy.
Glenn Close and Mel Gibson were allowed to prattle on and on while the actual winners were given seconds for their speeches. Because of course.
how can he not tell his partner is next to him?
Damn...kim was so hot back then
Sadly the winner jumped out of a high window to his death.
Anton was so drunk.
+natsfan1137 And Valium.
