The rosary is perhaps the most famous Catholic devotional practice. But is there more to it than just muttering the same words over and over again?
In this video, Keith Nester breaks down the mysteries of the Rosary and the spiritual fruit that accompany them. For me, this has totally changed how I see the Rosary, and it just might do the same for you, too.

    About Gospel Simplicity:
Gospel Simplicity began as a UA-cam channel in a Moody Bible Institute dorm. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.
    About the host:
Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 24 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I’m out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. That set me on a path for further education, and I'm currently a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, studying theology. On any given day you can find me with my nose in a book or a guitar in my hands. Want to get to know me more? Follow me and say hi on Instagram at: @austin.suggs

Perhaps you have forgotten your scripture since you crossed the Tiber? In scripture the angel actually greeted Mary with the words "highly favored" and not "full of grace" as in the popular prayer. So what's wrong with that? what's wrong is that the bible applies that phrase exclusively to Christ and so is it okay for us to steal His glory and uniqueness that the Holy Spirit has given Him? would you not want to pray according to God's word or is it just any random thing for you now? And now, by the end of this chant, do you actually trust your death and eternity to Mary when the bible NEVER says to trust in anyone but Jesus? Does this warning mean nothing to you now?

This has to be one of the best Christian interviews or conversations I've seen and heard in a very long time. I was raised Catholic and both my mom and grandmother had me participate in the rosary. As a kid I didn't really understand why we were doing it, I just knew we had to. During my college years I kinda strayed away from Christ but have come back to my faith since November last year. After hearing this, I now realized how I learned many things about Jesus and his ministry unconsciously through the rosary. Thank you so much.

As a convert, all I can say is that the Rosary only seems like vain repetition from appearances, but I didn't know how much more I could love God before praying it. Some may find Marian prayers scandalous, but they've never once led me away from Mary's Son, only nearer. All three persons of the Trinity were made ever more consciously present to me by meditating on Jesus' Life, Death, and Resurrection like Mary did (Luke 2:19). The Rosary is a gift to us from God, not a barrier to Him.

As a Catholic, my objections to saying the luminous mysteries is because it came about after Vatican 2 and also because they weren't given by the Blessed Virgin to St Dominic. This video has opened my heart and mind to saying the luminous mysteries. I realise now that I've been missing out on all the graces that can be gained from meditaing on these mysteries.
This is just another step in my journey from leaving the SSPX. The Holy Spirit has really shown me that even with all the problems in the Church after Vatican 2, His grace is still sufficient and He has not abandoned His Church.
I'd like to credit the Blessed Virgin and St Padre Pio for showing me more and more the heart of Our Lord and how He wants me to carry out God's Holy Will.
Thank you Gospel Simplicity and Keith Nester. This video was truly inspired by the Holy Spirit. God bless.

I'm a traditional Catholic but no RadTrad. My parish is Saint John Cantius Church in Chicago. This is what I think of the addition to Mary's Rosary. Please do not change your mind on this. Maybe if you hear a different perspective, you will see that you are not wrong about the extra mysteries. This is my comment that I added here. Didn't know if you'd see it so I'll add it here.
There's nothing controversial about the Luminous mysteries themselves. They, in and of themselves are not a problem at all. I love those mysteries and that time in the life of Jesus. That's all in Scripture and we, who are more traditional Catholics, have nothing against anything in Scripture.
The problem is that they are not part of Mary's Rosary. As I stated in another comment, Mary told us to preach her Psalter which is 150 Psalms not 200. 150 Hail Marys in the 15 Decade Rosary. Mary is perfect, so what she gives us is perfect. Everything in all 15 mysteries flow together perfectly. And the 54 Day Novena flows with the 15 mysteries. But throw in those extra mysteries and it throws everything off. It just doesn't go together.
Many people only pray ⅓ of the full 15 Decade Rosary each day. That's 5 mysteries. If we prayed ⅓ of the Rosary with those added mysteries, that would be 6.66.
Here is a quote from a priest and what he believes about adding to Mary's Rosary as if Mary's Rosary is not perfect as she gave them to us.
"𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙎𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙡 𝙗𝙮 𝙬𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙢𝙤𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙜𝙞𝙛𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙑𝙞𝙧𝙜𝙞𝙣 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙮𝙚𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙖𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙧 𝙗𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙝."
I think those mysteries should've been given to us as a completely new devotion and not part of Mary's Rosary. Maybe the Chaplet of the Luminous mysteries.
I will add for you that it really has nothing to do with VII. In fact, Luminous mysteries were before VII. I have no problem with a reverent Novus Ordo Mass although I much prefer the TLM. I digress. My problem is that they were just thrown in with Mary's Rosary as if what she gave us was not perfect just the way it was.

    • @1Hope4All
      @1Hope4All 9 місяців тому

Stick with saying the Rosary without the Luminous mysteries. But then if you want to pray those, pray them as a separate devotion. This way, you won't mess up the days on which each of the mysteries are supposed to be prayed.
To get an even better understanding of why we shouldn't add those to Mary's Rosary, look up the video, "Traditional vs New Rosary."

As a lay person and Italian that really has "tight" strings to italian branch of St. Dominic's friars, there isn't a single dominican church in Italy where luminous mysteries weren't embraced! Idk what you've all been told, but history of the rosary is way longer and dates much before the St. Dominic came around! Go and check it out! Becides, if a Vicar of Christ who gave the world a beautiful letter to the Rosary (Rosarium Virginis Marie) right after the Great Jubelee inviting God's people through the rosary to seek and invoke God's peace in the new millenium, go at large and cast down the fishing nests (duc in altum) and he thought Rosary was one means of reaching that, so he was promoting Rosary as way of renewal of our faith and a prayer that "beats the rhythm of our lives" gives us 5 more Christ centric mysteries as a constant reminder of our cristian mission that culminates with Eucarist and we all need to testify our faith and are called to incarnate it, well, that is if we really are on that path of discipleship, so why make any fuss about new mysteries? Do you really think he displeased or dissapointed Mary and went against what she stands for in trying to do what he did? Or you think the Pope has no clue what our times need? If the order of St. Dominic that has promoted rosary as much as it's founder and gives praise to God through study, a bunch of high theologians, deeply rooted in their charisma Veritas in Charitate, they are so rooted in tradition and even have history of running inquisition have nothing to say against the luminous mysteries and embrace them, why should any catholic act otherwise? Is all this in any way against what catholic tradition stands for? I'm all in for catholic tradition, but traditionalism that resembles more to orthodox tradition (blind conservatorism of what they reached by evolving up to a certain century when they had enough of it), than catholic tradition which applies always discernment as St. Paul puts it and "examine all things and keep what's good" or to put it into a french proverbial expression: we don't throw the baby with the dirty water in which was bathe. I'm no theologian, but as a catholic nerd I know enough of Church's history, Bible and lives of saints that every generation experiences critical moments and hardships and in every century catholics wondered if the faith is going to end, but through the grace of God and assistence of the Holy Spirit, we're still here and increasing in numbers and getting on nerves of many, even when our human perception tells us the opposit...

As Our Lady gave the Rosary to St. Dominic, then the 15 Mysteries in three forms, the Joyful, The Sorrowful and the Glorious. That is why Pope John Paul II Luminous Mysteries was not accepted by some for a while. St. JPII loved his Rosary and prayed it many times a day. His motto, Totus Tuus..all for Mary. I remember Fr. Patrick Peyton, the Rosary Priest, who travelled the world promoting The Family that Prays Together, Stays Together. God bless you good men. By the way, the Rosary was designed to teach the people about the story of Christ in the Bible, when few people had bibles or could read, prior to the printing press being invented or paper produced! Hand writing on vellum sheetsor scrolls was how the history and early Church records were handed down.

Perhaps someone has already said this, but many non-Catholics do not understand that praying the rosary is not in any way a requirement for Catholics! It is a personal devotion, even when it is being prayed in groups. It is not part of any liturgy. For myself, I use the rosary to pray the Divine Mercy, also to pray the Jesus prayer. Sometimes I pray in Latin along with Pope St.John Paul II, which is available in the Laudate app.

This should be a good one. For several years, I've thought that people who only HEAR the Rosary being prayed would miss MOST of what is going on and would consider it obsessed with Mary. For people who PRAY the Rosary, they get the extra layers of prayer and just how centered on Jesus it is. It's made me think there really needs to be more focus on sharing the depths of the Rosary and what people get out of the meditations.

      My thoughts and experience also.
Let's all try to share our Jesus centered Rosary realizations. It would be so awesome if people would have more courage to open up their in-depth Rosary and if they also had great humility not to claim having the ultimate truth in their private meditations. Sharing the prayer experience is essential, but easily leads to sectlike assumings.

I don't understand how the Rosary is centered on Jesus, when more of the prayers are to Mary?

    • @burkeiowa
      @burkeiowa 9 місяців тому +11

@@saintejeannedarc9460 , It's the meditations on the mysteries that center on Jesus, aside from the the Hail Mary being prayed to Mary, but also points to Jesus. The first part of the Hail Mary is directly from the Gospel of Luke, only adding the name of "Mary" to add context when it's in a prayer. So that recites scripture, which is the word of God. She would not be as important, except for her connection to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Like others, she is a child of God the Father. But the Holy Spirit united in such a way that led to the incarnation of God the Son. She sits in a spot of unity of the three, although is not God herself. The prayer points to the importance of God in her life, as the Lord is with thee. Also, the end of the first half of the prayer affirms that Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
The Hail Mary originally only included that scriptural content. In times of difficulty, the petition for her to pray for us now and at the hour of our death was added. But those prayers are directed to God, with the aim of drawing us to God so we may unite with God when we die, so we may live with God in heaven.
The mysteries begin with the annunciation, when Mary consents to become the mother of Jesus, and Jesus is conceived. It continues on through the various mysteries through major events of his life, death, and resurrection. Some people might then point out that there are two more mysteries that seem to again focus on Mary, specifically her assumption and coronation.
The assumption helps us recognize that mere humans don't ascend like Jesus does by His own power. God lifts us up to heaven. So it helps us recognize the divinity of God compared to Mary or any of us. The coronation as Queen also points us to Jesus. The queens of the Old Testament were the mothers of the king. For Mary to be crowned Queen, she couldn't have that title unless her Son was a king. Jesus is the King of Kings.
Those are just a few things that come to mind while the video is still running, but many things point to Jesus, especially in the meditations of Jesus's life.

I just thought I would add some thing.
I’m a cradle Catholic. I’m in my mid 70s. My parents were always praying the rosary in the home but not out loud and not with me.
As a Catholic I was not into the rosary because I felt it was repetitious, and I couldn’t focus well on the meaning and the mysteries.
I was talking to Mary when I was in my 40s maybe or 50s. I said I’m trying to pray the rosary, but I’m not doing a very good job, so please help me if you want me to.
I have been preferring the Bible, believe it or not. And when I wanted to pray the rosary, I just looked up the mysteries in the Bible. Because I did not know how to pray Hail Mary’s at the same time.
The way I got into it was listening to Mark Mallett, who has a CD of the rosary with drama for sure.
I was in a prayer group and we played his CDs before we started.
I started listening to it, which drew me into the mysteries in my imagination and that was it. Ever since then I can just pray the rosary, driving or wherever, and get into the mysteries thinking about them as much as possible.
That is a miracle really I think so anyway.

Just wanting to jump in respectfully as it seemed there was a slight misunderstanding. I noticed a few times Austin commented on the mysteries being something to focus on while praying. The meditation is the prayer. The Hail Mary was originally a counting device. While the rosary is Marian, it is more christocentric. The mysteries aren't like a part of the prayer or an added extra, they are the prayer. As we're praying, we're asking Mary to pray for us.

It scared me for the first few seconds and then I got angry I told it “you CAN NOT BE HERE, I don’t want you here 😡 I belong to Jesus, Mother Mary will come help me! Archangel Michael will defeat you” Almost immediately it disappeared. Total peace and bliss came over my room. Since then I started praying the rosary to protect my home, my family and my soul.

The section ending at 16:04 based and true.
I've been praying a daily rosary less than a month and the meditative properties are astounding. I try not to focus too much on the fruits that others suggest (though they are great points of reference!!!). It actually encourages me to read the Bible more so that I can understand the full context of the mysteries and see other fruits. They are mysteries because the number and kind of fruit we can harvest from them are countless. I'm astonished by how over this short period of time, I've gathered such a variety of fruit.
And it's also ok just to commune with God/Mary! There are times I just admire Jesus or Mary in the icons I have while I pray the rosary. Have discipline in your prayer, but don't be afraid to change it up a little or try new things as the Spirit nudges you. It's a learning process for the rest of your life, and God is so happy you want to talk with Him.

This video really helps to respond to people who say the rosary is just vain repetitions. It could be if you’re not focused on meditating the mysteries of Christ’s life, death & resurrection. There’s so much more to the rosary than meets the eye. I actually started a little personal rosary journal where I come to realize something unique and fruitful and I write it down. I am often brought to tears during the sorrowful mysteries. There’s just so many great things to experience by praying the rosary.
Oooh a second book!? I read Keith’s first book in 3 days I just couldn’t put it down. Really informational for new Catholic converts.
I really enjoyed this video. I watched it from beginning to end. I would have loved to have Keith’s book unpacking the rosary before I began praying the rosary. I think I might still purchase it, because it might help me dive even deeper into the mysteries.
Thank you Austin for sharing this video on your channel. I know you are still officially Protestant so I really appreciate your openness to other Christian faiths and their devotions.

Why do catholics run to the rosary to find momentary peace , when you can have daily peace through the prince of peace Jesus!

I grew up praying the rosary and did not come to personally appreciate it until I was living on my own and 30 years old. Now I pray the rosary most days. I’m amazed that it grew on me, I abhorred praying it most of the time. God works in mysterious ways.

I really love the Scriptural Rosary with the Luminous Mysteries published by Barton Cotton. It was gifted to me during a retreat and is my preferred form of the prayer.
When you pray the Glorious Mysteries and announce the Assumption of the Blessed Mother you're invited to meditate on Mary's Magnificat from Luke 1:46-55. Meditating on her heartfelt praise and love for God helps me to want to imitate her genuine love for God and her desire to please the Lord. Jesus is our example of the Christian life, but so is the Blessed Mother. She ultimately is a servant. She recognizes her smallness and with genuine love for God and in humility she trusts God's word. Elizabeth testifies to this when she is filled with the Holy Spirit in Luke 1:39-45. When I see her as a servant and meditate on the Coronation I think of her receiving the crown of life. This is the Christian hope, to be united with Christ forever.
God bless Keith Nester he understands the Rosary for what it can be.

I love Keith Nester and praying the rosary with him and the rosary crew on his channel! He reignited my love for the rosary. During covid, my whole family and I started praying the rosary with him and it would fill us with so much peace 🙏🏼 He led us in prayer and we loved him without him even knowing it😇

I usually pray the rosary only with certain groups, like the Sacramentines, because I already pray St. Michael's Crown daily, but I still try to meditate one mystery daily, and offer it to God for the growth and santification of the priests, monks and nuns faithful to Him.

The rosary bead string has 15 misteries and 150 hail Mary beads. This is what we often find attached to some orders of monks' belt, lije the franciscans. What most people have is what we call in portuguese a "terço", or a "third", which is 5 mysteries and 50 hail Marys.

This a a beautiful video and well done! Real men pray the rosary. The blessed mother Mary in the Catholic Church is one of the most beautiful part of being Catholic that we Catholics truly love and venerate. We often show mother Mary on the moon because she reflect the sun, which also refers to Christ. She is his biggest supporter and always tries to lead us to him. 💕❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 keep doing these great videos! Many blessing and I will also keep you in mine! Many blessings!!
