How cool was it to see Casey Neistat championing smartphone filmmaking? Fit the topic perfectly, too. That and of course Steven Soderbergh using an iPhone to make his feature film "Unsane"... and these guys can afford whatever gear they want. Don't wait to create!
Question about filming on a cellphone, how do you deal with super small sensor sizes, and deep DOF? I'm sure its much harder to get a good DOF and have good lens control with a cellphone
Also can smartphones have ND or UV filters?? Would help with the blown out sky on some of your vids
To get some shallow DOF you can use the Tele lens, 3rd party Tele lenses, ND filters or Beastgrip even makes a DOF adapter to attach traditional photo/video lenses. You can also get the subject closer to the lens to get some nice bokeh.
We’re spoiled today with all the larger sensor cameras. Wasn’t too long ago that most cameras we all used were 1/3” CCDs, unless you were shooting film. So long story short, you can get shallow DOF looks, but on wider shots and most non telephoto shots everything will typically be in focus.
Definitely. Adding an ND filter is one of the number one things we recommend! We have several videos on our channel on using ND filters. Here’s a review we just did ua-cam.com/video/TY69zFw5ORA/v-deo.html. And there’s more so just search our channel if you’re interested. Thanks for watching!
Cool man, thanks for the replies. Pretty interesting!
I love it when people put creativity before buying gear. Thanks for the inspiration.
Indeed I am with you on that! Ask I always say, if you heard a noise outside right now, and ran outside with your phone and filmed a UFO on your lawn, I guarantee nobody would be talking about your gear... Only the content! 🎯🎥
I watched this video almost about a year ago and it really changed my attitude. I always felt that I should only make a film if it's perfect. Since then I have made a bunch of random films and have really gotten good practice from that and now I am getting paid to make videos for people. Soon I will be making my next attempt at a narrative short film, I hope it will turn out great.
Hey that’s awesome! Congrats. And that’s definitely the idea. Don’t wait to create. :) Best of luck with your future projects and thanks for sharing your story!
That's so nice, you're really inspirational! :)
"The gear doesn't matter...."
Christopher Nolan: ☝️👁️👄👁️
Hahahaha 😂🤣
Without *script* we can't make a single Film. Even we have 4k camera.
Absolutely
@Punch Down King ohoooooo.. keep it up. Wow..
The best, or first UA-cam video in years, perhaps both, that not only did I watch all the way through without growing disinterest, but that was truly and actually educational, detailed, and extremely helpful. I had all my questions answered without needing to dig and search further on UA-cam or the internet. That NEVER happens. Your willingness to share your knowledge without hesitation or keeping secrets is the best gift I’ve received online in a decade. It’s exactly what I needed, when I needed it. Awesome video. Thanks!
Wow, glad you liked it! Thanks for watching and sharing your feedback. We’ll try and create more like this. :)
Just watched all of your 20 films in 20 days on a binge watch. Loved the project. You've given me some great ideas and motivation. Thank you!
Awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting. That’s what we like to hear. Hope it helps and look forward to seeing what you create!
THIS has taught me A LOT of new things. Nicely Done.
So inspirational and a good kick in the ass to just go and film stuff 👍🏻
Can't wait to try this idea to film with... Thanks for posting this!
Amazing and inspiring video! I own LOTS of filming equipment, but due to traveling extensively have been searching for the absolute minimalist shooting setup. Im very excited about where cellphones are going with the future of filming, and looking forward to adapting to it rather than fighting to keep spending 10's of thousands on new gear :)
Thanks! Minimalism is a great aspect of mobile filmmaking, especially when traveling. Lots of interesting & exciting developments on the horizon for sure in smartphone tech. All the gadgets do add up! :)
Man. I feel like if I shoot 20 short films in 20 days I'm going to blow up. As in my body is going to physically blow up. Lol
Haha, yeah. It’s a lot of work, but fun. :)
true!!
Thanks for your videos! It’s challenging me to do 20 in 20 days. Keep those tutorial coming!
Thanks, will do! And good luck on your challenge... share some work when you’re ready!
It sure taught me many things and also inspirational on filming without the use of expensive gadgets.
Mind. Blown. This is just what I was looking for and needed. So well done! Can’t wait to watch more!
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Love the video! Your insight made me a subscriber and I hit that bell so I can be on the notification squad. Keep up the great work.
Awesome, thank you!
I must say, very impressed and inspirational video. As a newbie to all this, this was definitely nice to watch.
Thanks! Hope it helps. Look forward to seeing some of your work in the future. 👍🏻
Actually did like it, was informative. Have filmic pro, haven't used it to its full potential
I used to use my smartphone for ALL my videos until December 2018. Smartphones are more than capable. Creativity / good content > gear
This video editing is giving me a new sensation ♨️
I film AND edit on my phone. Not by choice initially, but it's been great. KineMaster is getting close to being all someone might need to edit as long as they can cope with the small screen experience.
I'm no film maker; a vlogger with snappy edits and British humour.
I'll be watching and making notes. Part 1 was instant subscribe for me. Great work. 😊👍
Hey thanks for the comment and sub! We like KineMaster, too. Haven’t done any videos on it but probably should! Our go to app is Filmic Pro, then we typically edit on our desktop or LumaFusion on iPad or iPhone. Great to have a vlogger here, hope our channel will help!
It's been a couple of years since I owned an iPhone, but something to be said for a "locked" ecosystem... Video apps are mostly broken on my brand new Mate 10 Pro. I get external audio & poor picture OR internal mic and better picture. 😂 Also left/right channels get swapped using the selfie camera.
I'm putting aside this evening to catch up with your videos. Thanks guys.
same here 👍
Im a beginner but this tutorial makes me feel like a pro ❤️
Still can't believe how Filmic Pro / Moment haven't sponsored you guys! Haha seriously is not rocket science but you guys nail smartphone tutorials on UA-cam.
Thanks! That would be cool. :)
I'm using xiaomi redmi note 8 but this content is gold. Gear doesn't matter. I edited using davinci the end almost same as shoot with my 650d dslr. The phone now days surprisingly good. And filmic pro surprisingly good apps for to this
The is one of the most helpful videos I’ve even. Thank you so much.
G'Day mate, I am in the process of making my very first video to post on my UA-cam channel using my second-hand mighty Mavic Pro drone 7& iPhone 7-plus. I am slowly adding to my kit (on a low budget pension) so all the more to be as resourceful as I can. Watching good folk such as yourself helps me learn how to & I truly thank you for that. I have subbed & a big thumbs up man. I am currently learning how best to use Filmic Pro on my phone to film & LumaFusion to edit on my iPad Air. My note to you: The meaning of life is.... "To continuously seek JOY in all you think, say & do" Cheers from Spike (Central Wheatbelt Western Australia)
filmic pro looks like an ultra sick app, thanks for the heads up on the need to pay double the amount for filmic cinematography app... I didnt know that about Steven Soderbergh and it kind of its nuts now the power in your pocket! the main thing holding me back from developing my own youtube channel is how to tell decent stories over the long term...
Definitely. The storytelling is the most important thing, but no time like the present to get started. 👍🏻
That makes me wannah make a film of my own... great video!!
Loved it!!
Good deal! Thanks for watching.
I also shot with filmic pro and the log kit on my iPhone X and have it attached to a DJI Osmo mobile 2 and let me tell you something when you have everything dialed in and have the colors and lighting set it looks like straight out of a multi million dollar production for example shooting a scene were a character gets lost in the forest and tries to find a way out you can give it a legit horror movie look I showed it to some coworkers and they couldn’t believe it was shot on the phone 👍🏻😄 of course I have to improve some things like movement but when you like what you see you’re on a good way
I love the tips on using the flat colour profile in Filmic Pro! I've managed to make some films on my own with that feature and really see how it gives the footage more dynamic range. However, I think you could also consider sharing how to focus pull using Filmic Pro. I think that's one of the coolest features of the app, being able to manually adjust focus. Cheers!
Yes focus pulling is pretty cool too! We have other videos on our channel looking at that as well. :) Thanks for watching!
You're amazing.. cool iphone rig! 👍
Thanks! Appreciate you watching. 👍🏻
Omg bro we greatly appreciate this video, we been making film Content for a long time and we were having a hard time with trying to make our content phenomenal.
I subscribed because of this video and alsp purchased the app
Thks
Super inspiring. Thank you!
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
Trying to improve my home made fitness videos using your tips
Am learning a lot.
Your commentary is really top class, you deserve to be on a certain documentary lol
Kindly make a video discribing green screen tracking points and how they can be used
Thanks
Wow. Best video on UA-cam I have watched this year! Thanks so much.
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Not sure how I just now found this channel!? Great stuff!
Glad you did! Thanks for the comment and watching. 🙌🏻
Dang y’all guys are so awesome. Keep up the hard work and remember quality is key
Thanks! Keep on keeping on and always striving for quality. 🎥👍🏻
Such a good video!🔥
Thank you! Glad you like it. 👍🏻
i'm grateful that this channel exist.
Thanks for watching!
Thank for the video. I really agree with the cellphone movie making point of view. If anything it forces you to be more creative. Great job
Thanks! And yes, the limitations can definitely make you more creative. It’s also a lot of fun. :)
Casey's content is the best part of your video
Tell me about it. Casey FTW!
Amazing video and I'm very excited to start shooting a lot or all my stuff on my phone.
Awesome! Best of luck. Thanks for watching!
*_Very motivational video...Thank you._*
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks guys. 🙌
Thanks for watching!
Great channel folks. I want to try and film one a month, starting January 2019. Thank you for the inspiration. 🚀
Awesome! Thanks for commenting and watching. 👍🏻
I loved it Cox I also make my short films using my Smartphone Android
I have all those Accessories. I should start to follow up all those presets mentioned here and share the result. Thank you for the great video and information
Definitely! Go for it. Thanks for watching!
im so, so inspired!!! thank you for this 🌟👍🏻👏🏻
Great video! Looking fwd for your next video!
Thanks for watching!
Gear doesn’t matter but it does help
Yep, it can help add production value depending on the gear and project.
Great video guys! Very inspiring
inspiring!!!! now i wanna go out and made film with my iphone :)
Thanks! That’s the idea we hope... :)
Love your channel guys! I’m inspired :)
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Wow! Amazing stuff and great tips. Thank you!
You really did not use any lenses on your iphone? It looks great! Thumbs up you guys!!
Thanks! Appreciate the feedback. No 3rd party lenses except on our last one called Reverse Cycology... that one we used a Moondog Labs anamorphic lens. The rest were all just the phone lens. 📱👍🏻
Nice. I will consider it, when I buy a new phone.
Always killing it.
Thanks!
Nicely done! I learned allot! Thank you!
Awesome video guys :)
Fantastic video! Instead of using a tripod, why not just use a smooth 4? I can't figure out why a tripod is better in some situations or is it? Thanks for your feedback
Gimbals can be great and these days are affordable and easy to use. So personal choice really. The only thing is it is sometimes hard to get a completely locked-off shot with a gimbal unless you set it down. But definitely go for it! Thanks for watching!
Just shot my first short film on an IPhone 11. There is so much to learn. Ouch. Came to your channel from Dee Nimmin recommendation. Thank you so so much!
Katya Paden hey do u use traditional camera app for iPhone 11?
what tool you're using to edit your videos in?
i'm planing to start a youtube chanel now since i've horn the new iphone 11
Hey Rajat! Ok so, I’m 11 and not a pro. Just a kid actor having fun with UA-cam. BUT.... mom got an iPhone 11Pro Max and I had an idea for a Halloween horror short. We got my acting coach to help. We used the phone camera app, uploaded everything to our PC, and used Filmora pro to edit it. IMovie app works really well for simple youtube editing on your phone. I’ll go check out your channel! Have fun!
Katya Paden hey I was looking forward to edit using davinci resolve 16 (free version)
there are lots of things you can do with that software
if you have a macbook pro, i'll suggest you to do the same!
Haha keep asking parents for a MacBook pro! They said after i book another part in a movie. Have to keep auditioning!
Katya Paden well goodluck with that :)
i love it :) best video ever
😃 Thanks!
I wish this technology was around when I went to film school and had to edit on 16 millimeter film. Argh! Digital has made it so much easier. Great video. Question: what audio equipment do u recommend? Thx
Thanks! And we hear you! Filmmakers today have so many great resources at their fingertips that just a few years ago we could’ve only dreamed of... For audio we really like the RODE VideoMicro. It’s a small camera mounted shotgun mic that works well with smartphones and sounds surprisingly great. We highlight it in our Wish List videos if you’d like to see it in action. For lav style mics we like the Sennheiser ClipMic Digital. We reviewed that mic and there’s a video on our channel as well. Lastly, we sometimes use traditional shotgun mics and double system sound (like with a Zoom recorder) and just use the phone for video.
So after playing around with this app I'm impressed. Almost perfect except for a couple of thing. My phone is capable of shooting at 1080p @60 fps with its stock camera. When I select 1080p in Filmic it doesn't allow me to select 60fps. Also when I shoot a 4k video and export it to the stock media player on my phone it just won't play it.
Every phone is a bit different and a lot depends on the device. On iPhone you get 4K 60fps and in 1080 you can do 240fps. Not sure why the 4K wouldn’t play unless your phone doesn’t support that resolution - or it could be the higher bit rate or MPEG encoding.
Very cool! Thanks for the video!
Nice !!! Thanks!
I love Filmic Pro. I use it for all my videos
Great app!
I can’t find The app 😢
It’s available on the Apple App Store or Google Play. Here’s their website www.filmicpro.com/.
I love to shoot shortfilms of nature...:)
Thank you for the helful information
Really enjoyed your video cheers
Thanks!
Okay I just got my mind blown 24/7 you telling me a professional movie what created with a phone wow how
Yeah, definitely. Mobile filmmaking tech is really advancing these days and only getting better.
Great video!!
good video. finally subscribed :)
Thanks! :)
Great video tutorial. Thanks and subscribed 👍
Thanks for watching and the sub!
You’re welcome 😊
Great video ✌🏼
Thank you!
I'm curious, why do you shoot LOG outdoors and FLAT in? Is there really that big of a difference between the two formats?
It’s all about video noise. In lower light with a smaller sensor you get more noise - And shooting log will increase the noise.
bro your videos are gold *__*
can’t wait to film my short film 🎞
Awesome ..... So inspiring for everyone , I now want to make movies
Go for it! That’s the idea. :) Thanks for watching.
The Tipps are very good.
Nearly 90% of this stuff I am still using.
But my bottleneck is after the filming: the editing.
I am searching for a solution to edit films on iPhone/iPad with full of options like the filmic pro for filming
Check out LumaFusion. Thanks for watching!
Awesome stuff! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this posting. I'm just starting out making videos and for now, plan to only use smartphone(s) as my main camera. I see you're in the Dallas area, maybe we can do a collab sometime, as I'm just north of you in Plano.
My iPhone XS Max cost the same as high end camera when I bought when it came.
Awesome 👏🏼, like and subed
Great, thank you!
man... just subbed to your channel. amazing content.
Thanks! Appreciate you watching.
amazing , i can not say more
Thanks!
I’m learning a lot from you guys! 👌
This is perfect for me i shoot all my vids with Samsung S8. Crushed the bell on my way out. Toronto Canada
Awesome! Samsung are great. Thanks for watching!
Very nice
Which one of these phone mounts, tripods or selfie sticks works and works great without removing your otter box. I have yet to see a video that demonstrates this.
Interesting to showcase 4k footage when the video is uploaded at 1080p max..?
you sir are a life saver for me.. thank you so much!!! seriously... thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I don't have the FiLMic Pro app yet but I am wondering if you can focus pull by setting focal point, locking and then unlocking, set new focal point and then lock again. It would be clumsy compared to a focus ring on a camera but I am wondering if it can be done. I think the DJI Osmo Mobile you can manually adjust focus with a button, that might help.
Yes you can. We actually did a video on it... ua-cam.com/video/5hxCmH9cZ8M/v-deo.html
I’m inspired. 20 films in 20 days let’s do this !!!!!!
Awesome! Go for it!! :)
• Zack Snyder shot a 4 min short using iPhone and FilmMic pro and it was BEAUTIFUL.
Definitely! We saw that, too. Good stuff!
well guys, it's a commercial for a filmic pro, it's sadly not answering the question how to make 20 shorts in 20 days.
No commercial here. We have no affiliation with Filmic Pro. We just use their app and highly recommend it. 👍🏻
Hey!
Great work you do! Thanks!
I have an issue not related to this video but with the choppy video stream using AirPlay, have you ever solved it? From my iPhone to my LG C9 TV with airplay, using mirroring or sharing only the clip alone it still doesn’t plays smoothly…
Best 💪🏼😉
