Why don’t they just use an octagon like on the GC controller? I feel like it might even be easier to manufacture because you would only have to deal with straight lines, but what do I know.
Republica Austriaca wouldn’t an octagon make it easier to input all of the cardinal directions and diagonals? Just wondering, cuz slipping wouldn’t be a problem for games where you only need 8 directions, and games where you do could still benefit from being able to input the 8 direction more reliably. As long as you don’t push to hard, or your gate isn’t lubed or something, then I don’t think slipping should be that big of a problem.

When I introduce my friends to fighting games, they tell me that they are really intimidated when I bring my fight stick with me to play with them. I tell them that some of the best players in the world are pad warriors, and that they absolutely do not need to drop money to get good at fighting games. I play on a stick, and I'm still horrible. The controller does not make the player.
+ThatFreakingCat lol my friends say "you only win cause you got the stick" then I'm like "ok" and hand it to them and proceed to still body them with a controller while they proceed to wreck my stick mashing on my buttons and then never get to touch it again XD
I just recently picked up keyboard as a method for playing guilty gear since i grew up playing games on pc and i'm surprised how natural it feels. As long as you make sure the key mapping fits you, the motions feel way more natural than they ever have before
It also depends on which SF character u choose. Different characters have different advantages or disadvantages to using or not using a gamepad controller vs a joystick.
And here I am, the one person who uses the Wii mote and Nunchuck for Smash. Why? _Because it's the controller I grew up with, and am comfortable with!_
I’m a d-pad warrior, quick little story, in Daly City California there was a game store called videots or something like that and it was like a mom and pop rental store except all video games. Street fighter 2 turbo had been recently out and had gained some experience on techs such as zoning and picking up patterns and countering, anyway there was a no older dude like in his mid twenties and I was like 14 maybe. Anyway i would jump up and Hurricane kick over him and i noticed my recover time from a light Hurricane kick mid air was fast so after landing on the other side of him i would dragon punch immediately and would usually hit him. He was getting mad and said hold on I’ll be right back I’m going to get my sticks. Came back with an arcade stick and kept playing and i was still beating him. I’m over 40 now with a ps2 controller to usb playing mc2 on ps3. Still fun when i encounter my adversaries, I enjoy getting a win and upsetting their win streak. Right now I’m using the hori fighting commander it’s pretty cool
a year late but jesus fuck that would be hellish, i tried playing overwatch with one once and aside from a hype and probably more luck than skill-related widowmaker headshot at the beginning of that little adventure, i got rekt
The Neo Geo Pocket Color had a controls that haven't really been replicated on anything else, and that's a shame, because it's a really interesting design. Instead of a d-pad, it used a miniature thumb stick with microswitches. This makes it both fluid and definite. If you get an opportunity to play SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium on one, do so, and you'll see what I mean.
It's actually the most brilliant stick ever! All the precision of a dpad but really easy to pull off the z-movements for dragon punches. Just such brilliant design!
After being salty and losing a domestic Street Fighter Tournament final with my cousin’s, I just sat down to watch this, only to find out that Arcade Sticks just weren’t for me. Flash forward about 3 months. And I played with a control pad. And guess who just kikokened there way to the top! Thanks Gerald!
Keyboard warrior here. Always amused me how people say you can't win with a keyboard, then go around and moan about how hitbox is OP even though it's pretty much just an expensive keyboard.
+Roy Bread - I find it funny that using anything but an arcade-stick for fighting-games gets you mocked. Hitbox and keyboards "magically" get rid of difficult execution barriers and pad just makes execution "too difficult," to play any fighter.
+Fernando Martin What makes Commander 4 special for me is the ability to use 8 action buttons with the right hand and the use the left hand solely for directional input. It's like an arcade stick on a pad :-P
Finally switched to a fight stick and I enjoy it. I got used to it quickly, I was surprised. It is a bit loud so no playing while people are napping. If you are considering one get the square style joystick it's easier to stick low block.
Personally I think when it comes to fighting games a keyboard offers the most control But since I grew up playing primarily xbox, I mainly just use a xbox controller
I have been wondering why haven't anyone mentioned saturn pad, it has all the basic controls for fighting games. abc and xyz for l,m,h punch/kick, and two shoulder buttons for l+m+h. I don't know why people buy razer raion or the madcatz fightpad, they are literally saturn pad with modern design, yet they cost like $80. You can get usb saturn pad for like $10.
I always used a pad through and through, but a while ago I decided to try out a basic Hori mini fightstick for PS4. It wasn't as difficult to get used to as I thought, and there were some inputs and motions that I found surprisingly easier to do. On the other hand, there were some that were definitely harder, so I really do think it just comes down to what you're comfortable with.
I have been playing Tekken Tag 2 with a 360 circle pad, and I had been using it for a few years, I got to a pretty high rank with the pad, of course I have been using shameless tactics such as spamming, grabs, and repetitive move usage, but I think it's okay, as long as I improve more into my combos I'll use less of them. The stick... well, I hadn't played a lot of matches there, I have been using it only in arcades, but I can guess say it's like the pad, but move move-y, where the pad you kinda stay in one place.
I use Qanba and MadCatz arcade sticks for fighting games (I'm primarily using the Qanba Obsidian 2 as of now), and I will say that what matters more is your experience with whichever controller(s) you use and how well you adapt to using it, no matter if it's a pad, a stick, or a leverless controller.
Pad Player 4 life since 1992 when the sega genesis first launched the legendary 6 buttons fighting pad ( the perfect controller to play SF2 in that time ) now almost 30yrs Later ... i still use my (Sega Saturn) & (mad catz SFxTekken) pad to compete in tournaments, online & good old school Couch-Play & gatherings here in Puerto Rico.
the quote “its easy to doubt yourself when your doing something thats never been done before” has lived rent free in my head since i watched this video when it came out
Most of smash 4 patch were actually pretty competitive, fixing stronger characters and helping the lower tiers save for a few that did not get the chance. Not to mention bringing back DI and changing shields to make them a bit less safe overall which are changes that almost had no effect on the casual players.
A good proof that you don't know anything you're talking about if you can't even remember a major change like the one done to shield. They also made perfect shield harder, in addition to making normal shields less safe. Probably for the casuals too. They never changed Greninja counter either, even more bullshit. Corrin counter had no reason to be that much better than any other counter, casual play or not that was a dumb choice and they nerfed it . Very few characters made viable by buffs? Marth & lucina, Mewtwo, Luigi, Geninja (yes, he has way more buffs than nerfs, you're welcome), Dk, Bowser, Meta-knight, and probably more. Characters like Shulk, Charizard, Falco,Link,Ike, etc were unplayable at release and had so many buffs they are now pretty decent .. Who got the most nerfs? Ho right, top tiers in competitive. ZSS win rate on casual is very low. Guess what? Yeah, nerfed. Bayo, Cloud, Sheik, a few (too) small one for Rosa, Diddy, Luigi (to be buffed again, probably because the casual cried for combo they couldn't pull out anyway,I guess) .. TLDR : You are full of shit and putting Corrin counter as an example (while she had many nerfs actually, since they found her too strong after release, nothing weird to tone her town a bit) or changes that did not happen like greninja counter does not help your case. Good day.
just stumbled upon your channel and i watched like 10 vids back to back. Very nice work on piecing together the research with the visuals. Everything flows so well in all your vids! Just subbed!
Tfw I'll have to make my own fight stick because finding one with the buttons on the left is a pain and a half. ...And I also want to throw some directional keys into it.
Hey, I'm new to all of this. But I've played fighting games on keyboards for the longest. Are keyboards allowed? Also, am I allowed to set up my own button configuration or is it assigned to me? Thank you
The Holy Schois it obviously depends on where you're at, but in an actual competitive tournament anything that can be used to play fighting games can be used.
As far as general controllers are concerned, I personally prefer the controllers whose analog sticks had 8-corners each, such as the Nintendo Gamecube Controller or Nintendo Wii Classic Controller Pro. The added rigidity of motion seemed especially helpful for games that demanded a very high degree of directional precision, such as platforming and racing games. (I do wonder if they're currently patented.) Of course, I do believe that these kinds of control sticks, compared to the ones with a circular outline like the PlayStation controllers, might not be optimal for use in a fighting game, especially when circular motions are needed.
The Wii CC Pro is fantastic for fighting games, a genre that was virtually nonexistent on its home platform. Seriously, it had all the good bits you need: all four shoulder buttons had equal activation pressure, the stick was gated, and the D-pad was good as ever. That, and it's not impossible to find a used one for dirt cheap, then slap a Mayflash USB adapter onto it and off you go son
Octagonal outer gate is patented under US6102803A, which expired a couple years back. Given disclosure grace, corresponding patents should be expired all across the world this or last year. There is another directional guidance system that appeared at the time. Instead of using the gate, SEGA Dreamcast controller modifies the return spring preload, gently guiding you towards the 8 principal directions. To the advantage of SEGA's construction is to be said that the stick mechanism is extremely wear-resistant, electrically contactless, has very decisive centering and high throw, and provides guidance even at low excursion. To its disadvantage can be said that judging the throw by feel can be difficult and the high return force can be tiresome, especially when trying to hit non-principal directions a lot.
I played fighting games with pads, but recently I saw videos about the hitbox and they convinced me to try Keyboard while I get my hands on one of those
“It’s easy to question yourself when you’re doing something that’s never been done before, but not letting that break you is what I think defines a champion.” Damn, hit that one home
“It is a new step towards independence, once a man dares to express opinions that bring disgrace on him if he entertains them; then even his friends and acquaintances begin to grow anxious. The man of talent must pass through this fire, too; afterwards he is much more his own person.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche
I use a keyboard with the arrow keys for movement, and the numpad for everything else. If you're curious, I'll reference UMvC3 for controls Arrow keys for movement, NUM1 - LIGHT NUM5 - MEDIUM NUM6 - HEAVY NUM0 - SPECIAL NUM2 - ASSIST 1 NUM+ - ASSIST 2 NUM7 - TAUNT NUM3 - ASSIST 1 + 2 (Or Easy Hyper Combo) I kinda came up with this due to my frustration with not being able to move fast enough with a gamepad, I looked at Fighting Game Sticks and thought about emulating that onto a keyboard.

Round 1 arcades are pretty solid. There's a back half with plenty of Japanese rhythm and fighting game cabinets.
JOYCON BOYZ
:(
flex zay rip
F
fuck bro this hurts
After a few rounds of fighting, your joycon stick would inevitably start drifting. Thus winning the game in your stead.
I'm a simple man.
I hear Third strike songs. I give a like.
And the video was very informative and well done! Keep up the good work.
+Unpetraccable Haha, I heard Karin's theme from Alpha 3
0:37 Google Ads knows what's up
When I introduce my friends to fighting games, they tell me that they are really intimidated when I bring my fight stick with me to play with them.
I tell them that some of the best players in the world are pad warriors, and that they absolutely do not need to drop money to get good at fighting games. I play on a stick, and I'm still horrible. The controller does not make the player.
+ThatFreakingCat Lol, show him this video :)
+ThatFreakingCat lmao i suck at fighting games so if i saw my friend bringing one of those over id be like oh fuck
+ThatFreakingCat lol my friends say "you only win cause you got the stick" then I'm like "ok" and hand it to them and proceed to still body them with a controller while they proceed to wreck my stick mashing on my buttons and then never get to touch it again XD
Literally only bought a stick because using pads hurt my thumbs. Pad, stick, hitbox, wheel, DK bongos, play however you want
6:09 if this guy jumped in a lake, it'd turn into an ocean
I just recently picked up keyboard as a method for playing guilty gear since i grew up playing games on pc and i'm surprised how natural it feels. As long as you make sure the key mapping fits you, the motions feel way more natural than they ever have before
I'll have to give it a try!
Can somebody just win Evo using a wheel already?
Deprnding on the wheel you use and how you map the controls, it might be possible
Considering that most wheels hae the entire controller layout integrated for menus and stuff, that should work fine.
You got your wish
*cough* Initial-T *cough*
@@spookiebruh6743 Yeah Initial T beat the Guilty Gear Chanp in Top 8 with a steering wheel
It also depends on which SF character u choose. Different characters have different advantages or disadvantages to using or not using a gamepad controller vs a joystick.
Especially Zangief's 360 and 720 on keyboard 🥲
That feel when you realize even the Simpsons version is too old for you.
Lol
And here I am, the one person who uses the Wii mote and Nunchuck for Smash.
Why?
_Because it's the controller I grew up with, and am comfortable with!_
I grew up playing with that too, but I rather have just the wii remote without the nunchuck. Still, I respect your opinion.
Thanks.
Yeah, I've triedusing just the Wii-mote, and I'm not very good at it, but I'm sure it's not the controller's fault. I'm just not used to it.
I'm prety sure ScAtt uses the Wiimote + Nunchuck. There are actually some inputs that are easier with it.
Nizondo Yeah, they mention it in the PGR v2 video. Also, *insert smashbox joke*
You aren't the only one
2:58 holy fuck that sakuya stick looks super badass
And in smash, we just use Gamecube controllers... That's it
Hey at least you don't have to spend +200 dollars on a stick at least
Eric Sandoval Yeah, ive always been thankful for that
Wii u pro contoller is better than GCC
And some people use Nunchuk + Wiimote
Xeiter X The only real top player who does that is Scatt tho
Y’all are scrubs with your DK Bongos and NES Zappers. I play Minecraft with a Wacom tablet. (Trust me that is far more impressive than it sounds)
a year late but jesus fuck that would be hellish, i tried playing overwatch with one once and aside from a hype and probably more luck than skill-related widowmaker headshot at the beginning of that little adventure, i got rekt
It's doable if you set it to mouse mode. In tablet mode, though...
It's a good way to practice surgery
huion >:)
@@Poketrainer317 wacom gang
You got a tablet to work for an fps? I tried using one for tf2 and cs but it wouldn't aim anywhere
as much as it breaks my heart but due to my disability i am retiring from using controllers to play street fighter v and switching to a fight stick
your videos are very... very... good
Thanks, there's more to come!
4:45 That was literally one of the only details from the that movie I remember; I think I was 7.
Just such brilliant design!
pretty sure that the neo geo cd has a controller like that
you didn't mention smug. he uses a default Xbox 360 controller with default controls.
+Minizor27 Doh, slipped my mind. Smug is a beast.
+Core-A Gaming Phenom aswell!
+stuwee3 idk, try looking it up. he did excellent adventures if that helps.
+Minizor27 Smug does use an Xbox controller yes but almost all the other players mentioned were Evo Champions. Or at least international champions.
SonicFox plays with a Dualshock 4
Me: *chuckles*
Casuals
*glances at Gucci Smart Toilet*
I think this was the first Core A Gaming video I watched and boy what an introduction
Hori Fighting Commander 4 here!
Same
+Fernando Martin Same, love it.
+Fernando Martin What makes Commander 4 special for me is the ability to use 8 action buttons with the right hand and the use the left hand solely for directional input. It's like an arcade stick on a pad :-P
pad is amazing
How is the durability of these? I'm thinking on getting one soon.
Finally switched to a fight stick and I enjoy it. I got used to it quickly, I was surprised. It is a bit loud so no playing while people are napping. If you are considering one get the square style joystick it's easier to stick low block.
Personally I think when it comes to fighting games a keyboard offers the most control
But since I grew up playing primarily xbox, I mainly just use a xbox controller
I find keyboard hard to use, the inputs need to be very precise, in brawlhalla at least.
i use the stirring wheel for fighting games. i win every time
Kotaku doesn't understand ANYTHING about gaming any more. It's a shitfest over there.
+Asdayasman Gaming, anime... Is there anything they know anything about?
+Rafał Sobczyk Intersectional feminism.
+Asdayasman Isnt Kotaku feminism agenda site?
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Kotaku is a joke, but where do they place in comparison to Polygon?
Sega Saturn, perfection.
That GC controller clip you slipped in at the very last second XD
Sega Saturn controller is my favourite for fighting games
*I wanna see someone win with a Time Crisis PS1 Gun controller.*
🔫
I use Qanba and MadCatz arcade sticks for fighting games (I'm primarily using the Qanba Obsidian 2 as of now), and I will say that what matters more is your experience with whichever controller(s) you use and how well you adapt to using it, no matter if it's a pad, a stick, or a leverless controller.
"And you`re not using one of these." -> Initial T: "Hold my beer"
Pad Player 4 life since 1992 when the sega genesis first launched the legendary 6 buttons fighting pad ( the perfect controller to play SF2 in that time ) now almost 30yrs Later ... i still use my (Sega Saturn) & (mad catz SFxTekken) pad to compete in tournaments, online & good old school Couch-Play & gatherings here in Puerto Rico.
MARHVIN XII bro you live in Puerto Rico too I play smash though
I like to play sfiv and sfv with the guitar hero 1 controller
+Hlidskialfk You know you can get way more accuracy using the Rock Band 2 microphone right?
+purplegill10 seriously? shit, ill try.
+Hlidskialfk lol noobs. everyone knows dj hero turntable is far superior
+Baloney not nearly as good as the DK Bongos.
the quote “its easy to doubt yourself when your doing something thats never been done before” has lived rent free in my head since i watched this video when it came out
Dualshock all day. Never ever blame your equipment. If you disagree, look up a player who goes by BrolyLegs and come back to me.
+Theyungcity23 Check out NOM4D too, the dude has a nasty Laura and he plays with his fucking face.
+Theyungcity23 cant use DS3 because my fingers keep moving the stick when playing on the d-pad :(
Theyungcity23 Perfect shield drops. Shit don’t exist without a good controller.
0:09 Do some people really play SFV on wheels out there ?
with zangief, full circles all day.
That's actually SFIV.
What we learned: Harness the power of comfort.
I'm going to win EVO using my phone's touch screen pad. It'll be epic.
I like to think the GameCube remote is one of most creative considering that it was never designed to be played at a super competitive level
+GamingMadness242 Kinda like how Smash was never designed to be played competitively
Chris Tweten it's sad that a game never designed to be played technically is way more technical than most fighting games now a days
And you think SF2 was designed to be competitive? If so, think again.
Good day.
ima go win evo with some wired bannana's wish me luck :P
No Name lol thnx
Nahh mate, DK bongo's is where it's at for the Smash 4
lol k
also gonna do it for wired bannaners for analog sticks ima main akuma gen and t hawk or cammy too. :P
With a controller like that, you won't need luck.
just stumbled upon your channel and i watched like 10 vids back to back. Very nice work on piecing together the research with the visuals. Everything flows so well in all your vids! Just subbed!

HITBOX IN 2021 : AYYY MOVE, MOVE, I AM KING NOW
i have a hitbox and make a pretzel is too hard
Tfw I'll have to make my own fight stick because finding one with the buttons on the left is a pain and a half.
...And I also want to throw some directional keys into it.
Yo gimme an update. Let's see how it turned out.
Ayo how'd that go?
This video got Drifted away.
Anybody know what the clip from 0:54 is from?
keyboard users where you atttt
Hey, I'm new to all of this. But I've played fighting games on keyboards for the longest. Are keyboards allowed? Also, am I allowed to set up my own button configuration or is it assigned to me? Thank you
The Holy Schois it obviously depends on where you're at, but in an actual competitive tournament anything that can be used to play fighting games can be used.
me
here, tho only with Smash flash.
Brandon D yaaass
One more video sayin : both have advantages, both have downsides, chose the one that fits you most.
Thanks dude, really helpful
We need a new one with the rise of hitbox!
Pshh didnt say anything about Gamecube controllers
the ending
+super koopa 64 (IRBS) no there is not
blazing knights or should i say after the ending. plus he doesn't need to say anything, what other controler is there
Bongos
+blazing knights hah
As far as general controllers are concerned, I personally prefer the controllers whose analog sticks had 8-corners each, such as the Nintendo Gamecube Controller or Nintendo Wii Classic Controller Pro. The added rigidity of motion seemed especially helpful for games that demanded a very high degree of directional precision, such as platforming and racing games. (I do wonder if they're currently patented.)
Of course, I do believe that these kinds of control sticks, compared to the ones with a circular outline like the PlayStation controllers, might not be optimal for use in a fighting game, especially when circular motions are needed.

Damn, hit that one home
“It is a new step towards independence, once a man dares to express opinions that bring disgrace on him if he entertains them; then even his friends and acquaintances begin to grow anxious. The man of talent must pass through this fire, too; afterwards he is much more his own person.”

7:26 not aging well lmao
i was gonna say that LMAO
I would never have gotten into fighting games without leverless controllers, so an updated video including them would be ideal.
I use a Guitar hero controller when I'm feeling risky.
That’s some cool art for your profile where is it from?
0:38 DAT AD DOE

I have that same Arcade stick type, the SF4 tournament edition stick... I love using it :)
Who still have a ps1 controller
RealLife Master I have two of them
Wolf O'Donnell I do as well
I do...for some reason since I never have a Ps1 xd
I use a keyboard for fighting
I use a keyboard with the arrow keys for movement, and the numpad for everything else.
If you're curious, I'll reference UMvC3 for controls
Arrow keys for movement,
NUM1 - LIGHT
NUM5 - MEDIUM
NUM6 - HEAVY
NUM0 - SPECIAL
NUM2 - ASSIST 1
NUM+ - ASSIST 2
NUM7 - TAUNT
NUM3 - ASSIST 1 + 2 (Or Easy Hyper Combo)
I kinda came up with this due to my frustration with not being able to move fast enough with a gamepad, I looked at Fighting Game Sticks and thought about emulating that onto a keyboard.
meanwhile me with a keyboard
bruh im using a membrain keyboard and im kicking ass lamo
