If there is a sequel, I think they should follow the Spare Ending. It should also take place during the Second Mongol Invasion Of Japan. Lord Shimura's character could takes from cues from Inspector Javert from Les Misérables in that he ultimately finds himself questioning the "honorable" ways he's followed all his life. Head north to Omi Village & collect the Sakai armor & your blowgun. 3. Find Lord Shimura at his hunting camp while wearing the Sakai armor. He will commend you for it before you proceed with delivering Goro’s message. 4. Complete Yuna’s character tales. 5. Head to the Yarikawa survivor camp & ride to the stronghold with Yuna & Taka. You will mention the events of Omi & Otsuna along the way.

Kotun Khan was right about. He knew the only way for the Samurai to win was to abandoned their code and honor. Conversely, the Khan studying of the Samurai code meant they would happily die before committing dishonorable conduct making Kotun the perfect foil. Jin, although being the anomaly, abandoning his honor really didn't shake Kotun because he knew the Shogun would never let Jin live regardless of how many Mongols he kill. Every success Jin has is a stark failure of the Shogun thus making Jin a threat not only to the Shogun but to Samurai culture as well. Komodo Beach was proof of the failures of Samurai code and culture and if the Shogun were to save face and retain power Jin had to be labeled persona non grata. Of course this could've been avoided had Shimura ordered the Ghost to be a secret and an urban legend.
While playing i found that jins friends kinda became his family over time as you see how much they al care for eachother and even suport jin as the ghost
Jin is actually the most historically accurate samurai. He has honor, sure but the goal is always the number one priority. A samurai will kill you any way he can. They will (and did) use guns and to the extent that ninjas (or shinobi) existed, all of them were samurai or under samurai leadership.
@@dakotabynum5137 in the 16th century actually. They also used them in the unification of Japan. They still carried their Katana for last resort measures and still wore traditional armour in the form of Karuta, Kusazuri and Kabuto . But firearms became a staple of samurai combat even adopting a Japanese name of Tanegashima which was purchased from Portuguese traders. The Japanese copied the design, with help from a Portuguese gunsmith. If you want to do your own research where samurai used Tanegashima, then look up the battles of Anegawa and Nagashino. They also used them in the 1592 invasion of Korea with great effect in early points in the war, taking Seoul in 18 days with a quarter of their army being gunners. It wasn't until the Edo period which came with almost 250 years of peace, did guns become used less and the sword became the desired weapon to deal with small scale combat, but guns were still used by everyone, from samurai hunting and target practice, to peasant farmers to protect their property.
I think it’s kinda cool, how they kinda specify that the specific codes of behavior and action are tied to shimura and Sakai, the codes of the samurai were not an overly universal thing irl.. some clans had an entirely different idea of what honor was. So I think it’s pretty cool.
I really want to know what happens to lord shimura after u spare him. I went to his castle but the secret way was blocked out i could find any other way to get in. If anyone knows pls tell me.
killing Shimura makes sense, the Shogun damands a head Jin or Shimura, Shimura really doesn't want to kill Jin as if you kill him he treats Jin as his son officially and tells him to find him in their nxt life, meaning thats the choice he wants and is ready to accept it. if you leave him means he fails and the Shogun will discharged him as a samurai, strip him of his land and titles and either be killed publicly or seppuku, him dying by jins hands means he didnt kill his adapted son and his legacy is preserved and the Shogun will most likely give him a heroic death, Jin is considered a traitor both ways, so..
But we have no proof whatsoever that the Shogun will order him to kill himself. Yes it was a thing but it’s not like samurai were ordered to do it all the time. Remember these are highly trained warriors that you can’t just replace. I personally think killing him is probably the more emotional ending though. Also I think one of the actors said the surviving ending was cannon but I could be wrong on that. Japan in real life however was aware the Mongols would be coming back. Either way I expect them to just cut him out of any sequel, problem solved lol
@Gingy I dunno if this is just my game or if Sucker Punch intended it, but when I did the kill ending, over time I noticed that almost every time I fast travel the weather changes to stormy. I'm planning on replaying for the alternate ending to confirm if the sunny weather effect occurs every fast travel. That could be another post game change based on player choice like the different location and ghost armor dye.
@@kevinwebster7868 I've heard all the time about how in the game your choices and playstyle effect the weather but I'm starting to think they couldn't implement that well enough or if they even did.
Ok after some research I found that the high occurrence of stormy weather was intended for the third act onward as it represents Jin's transformation into the ghost regardless of the ending you pick. People are starting to get a little annoyed by it since it can get old fast. I like the stormy weather effect to a degree but it doesn't hurt to change it up especially when sunny weather brings out the most color. Felt kinda pointless to have a different scene by ending with different weather if it keeps getting stormy regardless. Why have a sunny weather ending when you fully embrace the ghost but have that canonical weather when you do the "bad" ending? Seems off to me. I figured they would make it more sunny on one ending and the stormy effect on the other. Hopefully this is reworked in the next patch which should DEFINITELY include new game plus. I wonder if Sucker Punch could improve the functionality of the flute where when you change to a certain weather setting it stays that way until you change it later. That would be perfect for immersion setups that aren't interrupted by scripted environment changes.
It might be small detail, but one thing I noticed was how the first time he scolded Jin after being saved, Lord Shimura was way more understanding as to why he used dishonorable tactics and almost appreciative of it (considering it was to save his life lol)
Jin is a virtue in bushido where its supposed to cover compassion. Jin was just over compassionate, he didnt betray his code, he held it up to the best he could.

Thanks for the story. Enjoyable to listen to while doing some coding work. As interesting as the game seems, these types of open-world games have never really been my style. So it's nice to just know the story without having to slog through it myself.
This is a nice video although at the start "Bushido" was mentioned and I do have a problem with that, in the video and actual game, because during the existence of the samurai there was no such thing as "Bushido". there were a set of values that samurai followed and some are what we associate Bushido but the values were general ideas on how a samurai should live and behave and they sometimes varied from each region. "Bushido" only came about at the start of the 1900s when a Japanese man wrote a book about "Bushido". The book was not well received in Japan but was a hit in other countries like the USA. But this video is really good at telling the story of the game.

In the dishonorable ending he stayed loyal to his new himself, the Ghost, and still putting lives over the traditions and fully devoting himself to be the legend people hope him to be.
Quick correction. Yuriko is not a house servant, she is one of Kazumasa’s consorts. She is samurai as well, easily identified by the fact that she wears armor under her kimono.

You choose to spare Shimura you are continuing the bloodline ( Red Armour) in Tsushima. You kill him you end a lineage of Warriors who protected Tsushima. Sakai and Shimura name become a Ghost (White Armour).
Great analysis, such a great story. I chose the white armor :*(. I honestly felt for them in that moment. Powerful story telling. I also did all the side quests for the main characters. Only a small handful of “?” I didn’t do. However, I ended the game with Jin climbing to a tall snowy mountain over looking the sea . I position him facing the sea with and the sun setting in the backyard. Maybe I’ll take a screenshot as it was a beautiful imagery. Ps. I wonder, if there is a second game, will the last choice at the end (red or white armor) will that decision affect the story?
I really do like this story, but when it comes to the ending, I would personally choose the kill option for a few reasons. 1. Sparing him from the Shogun. The point made in this video was that the Shogun punished Lord Shimura to kill his own nephew. This basically states that the Shogun doesn't give a shit about the fact that Jin is his own nephew and they're only concerned about reputation and status, which is extremely corrupt. What Jin said to Lord Shimura before he goes off to poison the Mongols, that he brought them hope and Lord Shimura did nothing, this is true to an extent. Jin sacrificed his principles for the sake of his people, he turned against his bushido code for the sake of his people. That is more honorable than anything, and in times of war, people get desperate. In times of war, sometimes you have to do things you aren't proud of, but the fact that Jin was willing to go however far he had to for the sake of his people is extremely admirable, and thus honorable. 2. The concept of honor. Honor in Ghost of Tsushima, and what it was categorized in Bushido, defined that it would respect and hold true to one's familial representation and hold true to the virtues of one's moral integrity and family legacy. This was the driving force behind many samurai back in Feudal Japan, I may sound like I am some kind of history expert but I am not. I'm just going off of what the game has stated and my own knowledge of the subject. Anyway, people during this time were deeply focused on holding their family's name in good graces, holding it in respect and to be admired. A part of this ideology is something that people would be inspired to work towards. To have a good reputation and to be respected is something that many people want. On the other hand, this ideology about preserving the image of your family, along with your reputation is very toxic. The idea that you would have to kill people just because they said something bad about your family is really fucked up. Even worse if one of your own family members decides to ruin your family's reputation. Honor in its base form is to show respect and admiration towards someone. The way that samurai used this was to their ancestors. But honor can be whatever the person wants it to be. The Shogun don't accept this view and they want to keep things as the way their vision and their vision alone.
That's basically all I would need to say about my view of the endings. Jin showing that he has honor isn't a bad thing. Honor can be whatever the person makes it out to be, and additionally, though it isn't the best option, killing Shimura technically spares him from the Shogun. Not exactly embarrassment, but helping his uncle not have to face the Shogun alone. Lastly, this act lets Shimura accept Jin as his son again, so there is still that compassion within the next life. But this is my view on things, and if you have critiques than I am more than happy to hear them. Take care and have a good day.
I saved the game before doing the deed against shimura. So got the both ending but imo sparing him was jin or ghost true to his character. He left his samurai self broke the code and promise. At the end the honor mean nothing to jin, and he did promise ishikawa that he won't consumed by ghost. Truly this game is a masterpiece
I know I’m kind of late to the party but it would be nice if u could the characters on the iki island expansion character especially Jin’s Biological father
I know its the main plot of the game but I WISH we could choose to either become a samurai or the ghost, i feel like the "jin becoming the ghost and betraying lord shimura" moment was a bit too forced and it would have been so interesting to see jin become lord shimura' son.
There is no honor in sending people to die ,in my opinion honor is doing the right thing even if people think of you as a monster like killing a simple person to save many
I am wondering if in the second game, are you going to make rebellion and fight the shogun ... making it very fitting first saving his ass and then wiping him from the history books
The video game was awesome through-and-through one of the best I've seen and played thus far, (next to red dead redemption 2) keep up the good work sucker punch; As far as the character of jin sakai goes I do not consider him a hypocrite at all, He continued to show himself to be the most honorable, more so than his uncle due to the fact that he valued innocent lives more than the need to appease the rigid dogma of the bushido code for the sake of his uncle and the shogun, they were facing an enemy that was using their code against them to take over the land and the people and jin saw no other choice but to break away from that in order for his people and his country to survive the murderous onslaught of the mongols, Thus it forced him down a path that he was Initially resistant to but ultimately embraced for the good of everyone Which in turn has made him a beloved living legend among his people as well as tsushima's very own japanese zorro, He may have sacrificed and lost everything because of the harsh choices he was forced to make, but he also gained a whole lot more from his willingness to sacrifice and lose everything for the greater good of all and he for a video game character has my utmost respect for that. He uncle however is the villain of his own story because he was willing to sacrifice an innocent woman like jin's friend yuna to the shogun and blame the poisoning of the mongols on her; something a man of honor should never do, so I personally don't care about lord shimura's pain, he deserves it and what better way for him to suffer more than to be spared and live with the humiliation of having his own nephew and "son" go on to become a better person and greater legend than him, the shogun and the entire class of the samurai. LONG LIVE THE GHOST!!! 🔥💯😉😁👍

@@RiinzL No? It doesn’t work like that. And besides, Lord Shimura was inspiring and trusted leader so having one of their best leader executed is not common sense. Even if he was defeated but survived, he would not get executed.
@@wattozzchimera1956 Yes he would, Bushido is tough, he failed his nephew and he failed his Shogun, of course he's gonna get punished for that. You really think the Shogun is gonna appreciate the fact that the Ghost is still alive and defeated Shimura? Even if the Shogun doesn't execute Shimura, I'm pretty sure Shimura will Seppuku himself seeing as how ashamed he is if you let him live. It's the only way he can retain his honor
There needs to be a game done like this about the 100year war for a unified Japan.
Shimura would not survive a spare ending.
He'd be expected to kill himself for failing to kill Jin. If he didn't, he'd have no honour, and the Shogun would have him killed regardless.
Fun fact: in Act 2, you can complete the three main objectives in any order you want; I prefer this order:
1. Find Umugi Cove, talk to Goro, & get his map.
Such an amazing game, it's been the best game I've played in a long time. For the ending I decided to kill, and I'm glad I did because the white armor looks very good.... I highly recommend this game, amazing story, graphics, combat.. Pretty much everything 10/10 Game, In my opinion it was absolutely wayyy better than the last of us 2

You are the best story teller..
You have my congratulations for this awesome video.
Can't wait to hear more from you.
While playing i found that jins friends kinda became his family over time as you see how much they al care for eachother and even suport jin as the ghost
ah yes the TRUE game of the year
Jin is actually the most historically accurate samurai. He has honor, sure but the goal is always the number one priority. A samurai will kill you any way he can. They will (and did) use guns and to the extent that ninjas (or shinobi) existed, all of them were samurai or under samurai leadership.
Show me when they ever used a gun? They did things by a code and if they broke that code most became ronins
@@dakotabynum5137 look up the sengoku period
@@dakotabynum5137 look up the battle of nagashino
I think it’s kinda cool, how they kinda specify that the specific codes of behavior and action are tied to shimura and Sakai, the codes of the samurai were not an overly universal thing irl.. some clans had an entirely different idea of what honor was. So I think it’s pretty cool.

Lol games It’s Speculated He May Die from Seppaku, a Dishonorable and Honorable Suicide Ritual
@@TheGhostProductions. *seppuku
killing Shimura makes sense, the Shogun damands a head Jin or Shimura, Shimura really doesn't want to kill Jin as if you kill him he treats Jin as his son officially and tells him to find him in their nxt life, meaning thats the choice he wants and is ready to accept it. if you leave him means he fails and the Shogun will discharged him as a samurai, strip him of his land and titles and either be killed publicly or seppuku, him dying by jins hands means he didnt kill his adapted son and his legacy is preserved and the Shogun will most likely give him a heroic death, Jin is considered a traitor both ways, so..

Nah it’s still random. I chose to kill but when I fast travel I still get random weather.
That would be perfect for immersion setups that aren't interrupted by scripted environment changes.
when the khan said somewhere in act 1 ''he will become what you hate'' he was right all along or ''war brings out who we trully are''

I love the job well done at summarizing the story unlike other youtubers
Oh shit Gingy changing things up with content! Hell yeah m8 🔥
It might be small detail, but one thing I noticed was how the first time he scolded Jin after being saved, Lord Shimura was way more understanding as to why he used dishonorable tactics and almost appreciative of it (considering it was to save his life lol)
Continue the good work!
Fantastic video! Act 3 wasn't long enough for me but an amazing ride, well done bro!
Shimura dies even after you spare him. It is referenced in a conversation with an NPC. So killing him should be the "True Ending."
best game I've played since red dead redemption 2

That's great and lovely, wish there were games like this about the Anglo-Irish wars

Wonderful storytelling
This means I’m halfway through the story!? I thought I was almost done😫😫
I like the both endings. In the honorable option this is a drama of the man who stayed true to his code but it was too late for him.
In the dishonorable ending he stayed loyal to his new himself, the Ghost, and still putting lives over the traditions and fully devoting himself to be the legend people hope him to be.
Jin basically invented Ninjutsu
lord shimura licks his tongue a lot.. also touches jin on shoulder a lot.... creeeepy so i killed him XD
I don't know why I laughed so hard on this lool
LOL I noticed that too. I guess in their culture they didn't hug, so that's as close as culture would allow them to get
Quick correction. Yuriko is not a house servant, she is one of Kazumasa’s consorts. She is samurai as well, easily identified by the fact that she wears armor under her kimono.
Watching this makes me want to play through this game again. I love this masterpiece!
I just finished the main story and I really enjoyed this game.
Great video. Subbed
Also although samurai are about honnor there not all about good doing what ever is necessary to keep people safe is a much better code then being a slave to honnor
It's kinda weird but awesome that Sucker Punch, known for making games targeted towards pre-teens and teens, makes this amazing mature game.

Its too bad the game didnt have an option to NOT betray the code. But I guess thats the intention of the story. Would love to see that storyline as well. Im only part the way through so I cant wait to get to the end.

You choose to spare Shimura you are continuing the bloodline ( Red Armour) in Tsushima. You kill him you end a lineage of Warriors who protected Tsushima. Sakai and Shimura name become a Ghost (White Armour).
I killed him back then for the white outfit
Honor? Tradition? Bushido? No. Uncle shimura was just lucky i prefer the color red to white.
Why do I have a feeling that this is all leading up to Jin being the first Ninja in the second game
Well the first Ninja in Tsushima, pretty sure mainland Japan had Ninjas very early on. But would be cool if Jin forms a full on Ninja Clan.
hands down best game i ever played...and it's by a wide margin
Great analysis, such a great story. I chose the white armor :*(. I honestly felt for them in that moment. Powerful story telling. I also did all the side quests for the main characters. Only a small handful of “?” I didn’t do. However, I ended the game with Jin climbing to a tall snowy mountain over looking the sea . I position him facing the sea with and the sun setting in the backyard. Maybe I’ll take a screenshot as it was a beautiful imagery.
Ps. I wonder, if there is a second game, will the last choice at the end (red or white armor) will that decision affect the story?
Shimura: Nooo you can't just play this like Dishonored on high chaos
Jin: If I could summon rats to eat the Khan I would
I really do like this story, but when it comes to the ending, I would personally choose the kill option for a few reasons.
Ghost of Tsushima is a great, underrated, well written and beautiful game.
I wonder if there is a way to get both ghost armor colors

There is no honor in sending people to die ,in my opinion honor is doing the right thing even if people think of you as a monster like killing a simple person to save many

looking back 3 yrs ago and playing it again this 2024 I still do wonder why tf this game did not win the game of the year.
I am wondering if in the second game, are you going to make rebellion and fight the shogun ... making it very fitting first saving his ass and then wiping him from the history books
I hope they make a sequel, instead of kratos killing gods it’s Jin putting down the shogun.
